USERguide
This USERguide is written assuming that you are installing the
MULTINETswitch™with a network analyzer such as Sniffer
Technologies DSS/RMON Pro console as the nerve center of a
Distributed Sniffer System. Further, it is assumed that switch
configuration will take place at a central location using
Datacom Systems ATTACHit™switch control software for
Windows95/98/NT. Below is a description of how this

This USERguide is written for the person who must install and
connect a MULTINETswitch™. The installer is assumed to be
familiar with Windows95/98/NT, know how networks operate,
and have operating knowledge of a network analyzer such as
Sniffer Technologies DSS/RMON Pro.

Product Description
Until Datacom’s MULTINETswitch™, there has been no
efficient means to monitor both Local Area Network seg-
ments and Wide Area Network links passing through a hub.
The MULTINETswitch™from Datacom Systems, Inc. is
the key that unlocks both network visibility in Local Area
Network and Wide Area Network environments at the same
time. The MULTINETswitch™provides a connection that
allows access to meet whatever monitoring or analysis
requirements your networks may have.
Like many network managers, you have an urgent need to
monitor and analyze paths between work stations and hubs.
The Datacom MULTINETswitches™are capable of switch-
ing up to two “Network Devices” between MULTINET
segments and links.
The MULTINETswitch™is capable of moving Sniffer
Technologies Distributed Sniffer System®(DSS) Servers
transparently from one network segment or network link to
another under computer control. The 2x8
MULTINETswitches™are designed to permit sharing one
and two DSS Servers, respectively, between eight network
segments and eight network links or up to 16 network seg-
ments and 16 network links by daisy-chaining two
MULTINETswitches™.

Connection Instructions
The typical installation described herein will be for a
MULTINETswitch™with the Sniffer Technologies
Distributed Sniffer Systems®(DSS).
A representative installation for a 2x8 MULTINETswitch™
with a dual DSS is shown in Figure 1. A 2x8
MULTINETswitch™installation with two DSSs is shown in
Figure 2. Make the MULTINETswitch™interconnection
between the DSS Server(s), and individual network segments
as follows:
Step 1: For a MULTINETswitch™to dual DSS Server, con-
nect the
LAN MONITOR port of the DSS Server to the LAN
Common Port
of the MULTINETswitch™using one of the
cables as shown in Table 1. Connect the
WAN MONITOR port
of the DSS Server to the
WAN Common Port of the
MULTINETswitch™using a DRL312-3 cable.
Step 2: For a MULTINETswitch™to dual DSS Server, con-
nect the COM 1 port of the DSS Server to the
Control port of
the MULTINETswitch™using a DRL293A-3 Control Cable.
Step 3: Connect network cables going to each network seg-
ment port and link port.
Step 4: Connect the Power Supply 5-pin DIN Male connec-
tor into the
Power port of the MULTINETswitch™and then
plug the Power Supply into the external power source wall
receptacle.
When an 2x8 MULTINETswitch™is to be installed with two
DSS Servers as shown in Figure 2, Step 1 must be per-
formed for both DSS’s
MONITOR ports to the LAN Common
Port and WAN Common Port
, respectively, of the
MULTINETswitch™and Step 2 must be modified to connect
the COM1 port of each DSS to the
CONTROL port of the
MULTINETswitch™using a DRL341-3-3 Control Y-cable.

General
The MULTINETswitch™provides effortless visibility into a
wide range of network types with easy connectivity. Also,
Datacom’s line of MULTINETswitches™allows resource
sharing with one or two analyzers to meet your network ana-
lyzing requirements. Table A1 shows the MULTINET-
switch™capacity, network type, network connectivity, prod-
uct weight, and shipping weight.
Electrical
Nominal Power Requirements: The MULTINETswitch™
has been provided with an external power supply requiring
100-240 Volts AC at 50-60 Hertz. This supply is provided as
a standard, no charge accessory. The DC voltage and current
output ratings are +5 Volts DC at 4.0 Amperes, +12 Volts at
1.0 Amperes, and -12 Volts at 0.6 Amperes. This power sup-
ply is provided with Safety Extra-Low Voltage (SELV) cir-
cuits which separate hazardous voltages with a grounded sys-
tem on the primary input. The power supply has been certi-
fied by UL, CUL, and TUV and is CE approved.

Front Panel
Front panels of each model in the MULTINETswitch™series
are illustrated in Figure B1 and Figure B2. The front panel
has indicator lights that display the connection status of each
channel.
An explanation of the indicator lights follows:
Power
A green light within the center of the Datacom logo indicates
power is on.
Networks:1 through 8
A green light under a number legend indicates a completed
connection has been made from that MULTINETswitch™
WAN link to the WAN Common Port . A red light under the
number legend indicates a completed connection has been
made from that MULTINETswitch™LAN segment to the
LAN Common Port .

Rear Panel
Rear panels of both MULTINETswitches™series are illus-
trated in Figure B3. The rear panel is the location for all
cable connections and the power input connection.
An explanation of each rear panel legend follows:
WAN Links: 1 through 8
These connector ports are shielded and used for connecting
to 8 network links. Any WAN link can be switched to the
WAN Common Port .
LAN Segments: 1 through 8
These connector ports are shielded and used for connecting
to 8 network segments. Any LAN segment can be switched
to the
LAN Common Port .
WAN Common Port
This connector port is shielded and is cabled to the WAN
MONITOR port of a dual DSS Server or previous switch
WAN Link Port 8 if daisy-chained. The MULTINETswitch™
connects the selected WAN link port (1-8) to the WAN
Common Port
.
LAN Common Port
This connector port is shielded and is cabled to the LAN
MONITOR port of a dual DSS Server or previous switch
LAN Segment Port 8 if daisy-chained. The MULTINET-
switch™connects the selected LAN segment port (1-8) to the
LAN Common Port .
Control
This connector port is a shielded DB9 Female and is cabled
to the COM 1 port(s) of one or both connected DSS’s, or to
the previous switch
Link port if daisy-chained. If the user
prefers, this port may be used by any compatible PC where
Datacom DOS Switch Control Software resides, or by a
modem for remote operation. Because this port has a modi-
fied RS232 configuration, Datacom Systems supplied con-
trol cabling must be used.
Link
This connector port is a shielded DB9 Male connection and is
cabled to the
Control port of the next MULTINETswitch™when
daisy-chained.
Power
This connector is a shielded 5-pin DIN Female used to cable
to either the provided 100-240 Volts AC, 50-60 Hertz exter-
nal DC power supply.

Daisy-Chain Addressing
IMPORTANT
PPRIOR to installing any WANswitch™in a daisy-chain, the
address of each individual switch must be set one switch at a
time to perform the daisy-chain address configuration. The
hardware connection to perform this configuration from a
stand-alone computer platform is explained next. After the
hardware connection has been accomplished, the address of
each individual switch must be set one at a time with the
ATTACHit program as described in the DATACOMswitch
SOFTWAREguide.
Connection Instructions
The typical daisy-chain addressing installation described
herein will be for a D28100BTSL MULTINETswitch™.
Step 1: Connect the COM1 port of the computer platform to
the
Control port of the MULTINETswitch™using a
DRL293A-3 cable as shown Figure C1.
Step 2: Connect the Power Supply 5-pin Female connector
into the
Power port of the MULTINETswitch™and then plug
the Power Supply into the external power source wall recepta-
cle. A green light within the center of the Datacom front panel
logo indicates power is on.

Hardware Installation
Please note that daisy-chaining capability is limited to two
MULTINETswitches
™
, thereby providing access to as many
as 32 segments using two MULTINETswitches™. The expla-
nation below will focus on the dual DSS Server installation
configuration to multiple W2358DSL WANswitches
™
shown
in Figure C2. To make interconnection between multiple
WAN switches
™,
two DSS/SIS’s, and individual network
links, follow the steps below:
Step 1: (
NOTE :If a WA N switch™is to be used in a mixed
switch daisy-chain, it must be the first switch.) Install each
switch in the order that corresponds to it’s respective switch
address as assigned in the switch addressing program.
Connect the WAN MONITOR port of the dual DSS Server to
the
WAN Common Port of the first MULTINETswitch™using a
DRL312-3 cable. Connect the LAN MONITOR port of the
dual DSS Server to the
LAN Common Port of the first
MULTINETswitch™using a DRL366-3 cable. Then connect
the
WAN Link 8 and LAN Segment 8 ports of the first
MULTINETswitch™to the
WAN Common Port and LAN
Common Port
of the second MULTINETswitch™using
DRL312-3 and DRL366-3, respectively.
Step 2: Connect the COM1 ports of the dual DSS Server to
the
Control port of the first MULTINETswitch™using a
DRL293A-3 Control Cable . Then connect the
Link port of
the first MULTINETswitch™to the
Control port of the second
MULTINETswitch™using a DRL293A-3 cable.
Step 3: Connect network cables to the desired Link and
Segment ports of each MULTINETswitch™.
Step 4: Connect the Power Supply 5-pin DIN Male connec-
tor into the
Power port of the MULTINETswitch™and then
plug the Power Supply into the external power source wall
receptacle. A green light within the center of the Datacom
front panel logo indicates power is on.
After the daisy-chain hardware installation is complete, the
API software must be configured or reconfigured. If this
installation is for a new daisy-chain, refer to the full ‘API
Software’ Appendix section beginning on Page D1 of this
USERguide. If you are adding or changing one or more
MULTINETswitches™to your configuration, reconfigure by
referring to Step 9 through Step 11 of the ‘API Software —
API Software Installation’ section on Page D5 of this
Appendix.
After the daisy-chain hardware installation is complete, the
switch control software must be configured or reconfigured.
