3Initial Setup
• EachunitisshippedwithoneLi-Ionbatteryinstalled,thoughdisconnected.Toenablethebattery, youwill need
toremovetherearcoverandplug thebatteryconnectorintothemating connectorontheDSVII-SC®.
• Thebatteryisshippedfullycharged, however,thereisasmall amountof self-dischargeevenwhenthebattery
isdisconnected.Itis highlyrecommended thatyoufullychargetheinternalbatterybeforeusetomaximize
operating timebeforerechargingisrequired.Theunitwilloperatewhenconnectedvia anexternalpower
supplyregardless ofthestateof theinternalbattery.
• TheDSVII-SC®containsanintegratedchargingcircuit. Noexternalchargerforbatteriesisprovidednor
required.

6Operation
StartupSequence:
• Tobeginoperation, depress and holdthepowerbuttononthefrontof theDSVII-SC®unit.
• Releasethebuttonwhenasinglebeepisheard.
• Twoadditionalbeepsacknowledgethatpowerhasbeenactivated.Thekeypadand LCDbacklightswillturn on.
• Theon-boardfirmwareperformsself-testspriortoloadingWinCEandtheapplicationsoftware.
7BatteryChargingandReplacement
TheDSVII-SC®hasinternalspace foruptotwoLi-Ionbatterypacks. Eachpackprovides
3000mAhof capacity. Theunitcanbeoperatedwithnone,one,ortwobatteriesinstalled.
Onebatteryisstandard.
Undernormaloperating conditions,thebatterydoesnotneedtoberemoved. TheDSVII-
SC®hasaninternalcharging circuitthatcanmaintainaproperchargeonthebatteries
whenevertheunitisconnectedtotheexternalpowersupply.
Thebatteriesmaybereplacedbyopening abattery-accesscoverontherearof theDSVII-
SC®. Aslottedscrewdriveroralmostanycoincanbeusedtooperatethe¼ turn fasteners
holding thebatterycompartmentcoverinplace.
Whenreplacingthebattery, ensurethatthebatterycontactsarealignedwiththebattery
terminalsinsidetheunit.Replace thebatterycoverand tightenthescrew(donotover-
tighten). Incorrect batteryinstallationwillrendertheunitinoperableuntilthebatteryis
properlyre-installed.
+ Note:Thechargingtimeforafullydischargedbatterywill beapproximately
2hours(or4hoursfortwobatteries).

will unlocktheconnectorallowingittobewithdrawn.
Notethebatterycontactswithinthebatterycompartment.Ensurethatthesecontactsarealignedwiththebattery’s
contactswhenreplacingthebattery:

• UNITDOESNOTPOWERUP– Thebatterymaybenotpluggedin,oriscompletelydischarged.Openthe
batteryaccess coverandverifythatat leastonebatteryisproperlyinstalled.Additionally,usetheexternalAC
poweradaptertooperatetheunit andsimultaneouslychargethebattery. Pleaserefer toSection7 Battery
Charging andReplacement onPage7.
• Unitgeneratesasingle “error”beeptone,and thepowerLEDflashesREDonce.– Thisisanindication
thattheinternalbatteryisverylow,anddoesnothavesufficientchargetoruntheunitat all.Plug intheAC

11 HardwareFeatures
11.1Keypad
TheDSVII-SC®comesequippedwithanintuitive4-function
keypad, shownatright.Thekeysareverticallyalignedalongthe
leftsideof theLCDdisplay, enabling applicationsoftwareto
positionvirtual“buttons”appropriately. Thesekeysare
programmedasWinCEstandard“F1”through“F4”keys, though
thiscanbechangedbyaregistrysetting.
Belowthefunctionkeysisthepowerswitch.Youmustdepress
andholdituntilasinglebeepisheard,thenimmediatelyrelease
it foranadditionaltwobeeps. Holding thebuttontoo longwill
causean“error”typebeepsoundand thesystemwill notbe
poweredup ordown,asthecasemaybe. Thisprocedurehelpsto
guardagainstaccidentalactivationorshutdownof thesystem.
11.2FingerprintSensor, LCD &Indicators
Thetopof thefrontcasefeaturesthefingerprintsensor(upperleft)and LCDdisplay. TheLCDiscolor,and comes
withwhite-LEDbacklightingthatcanbeadjustedthroughacontrol-panelsetting.
Thepowerswitchhasabi-color(red/green)backlightindicator, whichidentifieswhetherthesystemison,charging,
orrunninglowonbatterypower.
