10
4. WATER ANALYSIS AND BALANCE
Before you switch the unit on, carry out the following steps:
4.1 Dissolution of the Salt
The salt is what makes the chlorinator work so insufficient salt means insufficient chlorine production. Running at low
salt can also lead to damage of your cell and reduced cell life.
The minimum quantity of salt required for the chlorinator to work effectively is 0.4% (4 g/L ).
Ideally salt levels should be around 0.45% (4,5 g/L) and no more than 0.7% (7 g/L)
When you put the unit into operation for the very first time, pour the required amount of salt into the diving area, ideally
near the drain hole. Operate the filter circuit with suction applied only via the drain hole so as to dissolve the salt faster.
4.2 Stabiliser
A stabiliser has to be used so as to prevent rapid deterioration of the chlorine by the ultraviolet rays. The level of
concentration should be maintained at 30 to 50 ppm. The stabiliser should only be put in once a year, when starting up
the equipment again. Too high a concentration, i.e. in excess of 100 ppm, could have the reverse effect.
4.3 pH
The right pH is essential to ensure the right water balance. The wrong pH can damage the cell. The effectiveness of the
chlorine also depends on the pH, which should be maintained at around 7.2 and in any event under 7.6.
4.4 Total Alkalinity
pH is not be confused with total alkalinity, which governs the speed and changeability of the pH. It is expressed in ppm,
with the ideal concentration ranging from 80 to 150 ppm. To measure alkalinity, use a suitable analytical instrument.
Low alkalinity can render the pH unstable, whilst excessive alkalinity can lead to high pH values.
For the unit to work efficiently and have a long service life, please ensure the pool water is balanced correctly, and this
can only be obtained by following the above instructions.
Adding other products may have harmful effects.
Additives containing copper or calcium carbonate are especially inadvisable: they can cause large deposits to form on
the cell, and invalidate the guarantee.
WARNING:
Do not add Hydrogen Peroxide to pool water or through swimming pool hydraulic or sanitiser
system. Use of Hydrogen Peroxide will void warranty on Davey products.
4.5 Insufficient Salt
If the salinity of the water is too low, this will cause the cell to oxidise more quickly and therefore reduce the life of the cell.

11
5. OPERATION
The System Control varies the amount of time the Cell operates during the filtration cycle. The System Control will not
vary the electrical current supplied to the Cell.
As an example, if one filtration cycle is set at 5 hours, and the System Control is set to Approx. 80%, then the total
amount of time the Cell will operate during the 5-hour cycle will be 4 hours (80% of 5 hours).
When the System Control is set to MIN, the Cell will be OFF for the duration of the filtration cycle. When the System
Control is set to MAX, the Cell will be ON for the duration of the filtration cycle.
The digital production display will hover around 100 (100% = full production), except in “SPRING MODE”, in which
case it will hover around 85. (see “SPRING MODE”).
The unit includes an electronic regulator which limits production to a preset maximum value. The two small indicator
lights (LED 1 and LED 2) warn the user in the event of a fault, or if salinity is too low or the water too cold (below 20ºC),
unless it is in “SPRING MODE”.
5.1 Control Panel
When the right salinity has been obtained (minimum 3 g/L ), you can switch the unit on (switch in Position 1).
The small luminous “Standby” dot will light up for about 30 seconds, which is long enough for the pump to be
primed and get water flowing in the cell. When the 30 seconds are up, the production display will read approximately
100, unless the unit is in SPRING MODE (it will give a reading of about 85).
The luminous Standby dot will also light up during the cycle when the production of chlorine is interrupted, during
which time the production display will be off.
The LED 1 and LED 2 indicator lights should be green. If one or both of them is/are red, there is a problem
(see next page).

PRODUCTION CONTROL
To check that the control mechanism is working properly and when the cell is not producing (“STANDBY”
indicator on), simply switch the production control button to “MAX”. Production should start up again (and the
“STANDBY” indicator will go out).
To stop the cell producing without stopping the actual unit, switch the “PRODUCTION CONTROL” button to
“MIN”. You may need to do this when backwashing the filter.
5.4 Low Salinity Indicators
Our unit has been designed with a system that will protect the pool in the event of insufficient salt.
When salinity drops, cell wear increases. Although salt is not consumed when the unit is in operation, it is lost
as a result of backwashing the filter, rain, and water losses for whatever cause (except evaporation, which does
not cause any loss of salt).
If salinity drops to an excessively low level, the LED 2 indicator will change to red, in which case you will need to
put some more salt into your pool. We recommend 1 kg of salt per m3of water.
Adding salt will not adversely affect the unit in any way, as it is protected.
If no action is taken and the salinity level continues to fall, the second indicator, LED 1, will also change to red,
at which point you must add salt as a matter of urgency (again, about 1 kg of salt per m3of water).

14
5.5 Other Factors likely to Stop Production
Calcium Scale Build-up on Cell
If the cell is scaled, this may well stop the production of chlorine in order to protect the unit, as scale will cause
the unit to heat up. Not only that, but a cell encrusted with scale will wear out more quickly than a clean cell.
Cold Water
If the water is too cold (below 20ºC), production will drop (switch the unit to “Spring mode”).
Worn Out Cell
The cell will eventually wear out and chlorine production will decrease. This can be offset by adding salt to the
pool, with the unit set to winter mode. However, there will come a time when, even with increased salinity and in
winter mode, production will be insufficient and the cell will have to be replaced.
5.6 Spring Mode
When the temperature of the water drops (to below 20°C), the unit will produce less chlorine, which may
activate the low salinity protection system. To prevent this, select “SPRING MODE” (off season) as soon as
the temperature of the water falls too low. Production will be reduced by 15% - from 100% to 85% - and the
“SPRING MODE” indicator will come on.
The unit should not be in Spring mode during summer as it reduces production and alters the
setting of the protective system.
The unit should be OFF if the temperature of the water does not exceed 15°C.
6. MAINTENANCE
There are three essential points to monitor:
• The cleanliness of the cell (no white deposits)
• The salt levels in the water
• The water balance (pH).
6.1 Cleaning the Cell
Mineral salts and calcium are deposited on the electrodes and in the tube during the process of electrolysis. These
deposits can impede flow in the cell and reduce chlorine production by damaging the unit. This means that it is
absolutely essential to check the cell regularly and clean it whenever necessary. The speed at which these deposits
can form varies from one pool to another, and depends on the following factors:
• Water hardness
• Water temperature
• Water pH
• The use of chlorinated lime
So please check the cell at regular intervals to see if there are any white deposits on the electrodes. With the right water
balance you will need to clean the cell far less often.
To reduce cell scaling, put product designed to lower the pH into the skimmer while the filter pump is working. This will
clean the cell (if it is not too dirty) and slightly lower the pH, which should be maintained at around 7.2.
If the cell is very dirty (white deposit clearly visible on the cell screen), clean it. To do this, stop the pump, close any
open isolating valves, undo the nut and remove the electrodes from their housing. For the 50gm cell, undo nuts and
remove from the pipe line.

15
Method 1:
Put one measure of hydrochloric acid to five measures of water into a container, and leave the cell immersed in
this solution for 1 to 4 minutes depending on how dirty it is. Do not clean the cell too often or leave it immersed
for prolonged periods, as this could damage it.
Method 2 (recommended):
Use a special cell-cleaning product (LIMPIA-CELL).
To clean the MCS50C cell: First turn off the power to the controller and the pump, disconnect the cell from
the Power Supply Unit and remove from the pool return line by undoing the unions. Take care not to lose the
O-rings. Once removed, place the cell upside down (inverted) in a small tub or a suitably sized bucket. Ensure
the cell is stable and won’t tip over. As opposed to the ESC16-36 gram cells, which are placed into a solution of
cleanser, the cleansing fluid is poured into the ESC50 cell.
MPS Models
The MPS units use a patented system of automatic electronic cell cleaning. Therefore, under the right working
conditions (right water balance, pH below 7.4), the cell hardly gets dirty at all. That said, small deposits of scale can
form, particularly where water hardness is very high (TH above 300ppm). If that is the case, clean the cell as indicated
above.
6.2 Salinity
The salinity of the water has to be checked, particularly at the start of the season, to make sure the water contains the
minimum amount of salt. If salinity is too low, this will prevent the unit from working effectively (and reduce the amount
of chlorine being produced), and sooner or later will damage the cell.
6.3 Water Balance
pH has to be monitored and maintained at around 7.2. If it is too high, scale will form on the cell more quickly.
IMPORTANT:
In the event of damage to the 230V or 220-240V power cables, it must be replaced by the manufacturer, his after-sales
service or a service agent having similar expertise.
7. MALFUNCTIONS
No chlorine is being produced in the pool:
Check to make sure that-
• The unit is connected;
• The fuse is not damaged or blown;
• The ON/OFF switch is in position I;
• The chlorine control is not set too low;
• The cell is clean;
• The pump motor is working;
• The safety wire is connected and not damaged;
• Indicators LED 1 and LED 2 are both showing green. If either or both are red, see Section 5 “OPERATION”.
• During summer, the “SPRING MODE” selector should be in the OFF position.
There is insufficient chlorine:
Check to make sure that-
• The cell is clean;
• The filter is clean;
• You have the right amount of stabiliser;
• The pH value is correct (around 7.2);
• The salt content is correct: minimum 4g/L; Ideal Level 4.5g/L
• The chlorine control setting is right: turn the knob clockwise to increase production.
• During the season, the “SPRING MODE” button should be in the OFF position.
• A status indicator light (LED 1 or LED 2) is showing red: see Section 5 “OPERATION”.
Check the salinity of the water and check to see if the cell is clean (a white deposit indicates scale
and you will need to clean the cell – see Section 6.

16
8. GUARANTEE
The guarantee is only valid provided the unit has been put into operation and used in accordance with the instructions
given in the manual.
The electrodes inside the electrolyser cell are made of a precious metal which is by far the most expensive component
and at the same time the most fragile. It is therefore essential to comply with the instructions regarding cleaning and
water salinity so as to maintain the conditions required in order to ensure maximum chlorine production.
The unit is guaranteed for 3 years with effect from the date of purchase. Using the electrodes in water with a salt
content of less than 4 grams/litre will invalidate the guarantee.
Do not operate the unit with pool isolation valves closed as possible pressure build-up may cause the cell the break
open. Such damage will not be covered under warranty. For valve use, refer to your pool installer/builder.
“Swimming pools contain water with a low level of salinity, free chlorine and other compounds (consult your pool
builder/maintenance provider). Any materials in contact with the pool water should be suitable for this environment.
DAVEY WATER PRODUCTS can not be held responsible for damages that occur to the materials of other products
that come into contact with the water of the pool.”
It is recommended to keep the unit switched off when the temperature of the water is lower than 15°C.
Low water temperature can damage the cell materials.
