About your Dell DSS 1500
The Dell DSS 1500 is a rack server that supports two processors based on the Intel Xeon EP E5-2600 v3
family, up to 16 DIMMs, and up to four hard drives.
The DSS 1500 systems are available in the following configurations:

Diagnostic indicators
The diagnostic indicators on the system front panel display error status during system startup.
NOTE: No diagnostic indicators are lit when the system is turned off. To turn on the system, plug it
into a working power source and press the power button.

6 System identification
button
The identification buttons on the front and back
panels can be used to locate a particular system
within a rack. When one of these buttons is
pressed, the system status indicator on the back
flashes until one of the buttons is pressed again.
Press to toggle the system ID on and off. If the
system stops responding during POST, press and
hold the system ID button for more than five
seconds to enter BIOS progress mode.
To reset the BMC (if not disabled in System Setup),
press and hold the button for more than 15
seconds.
7 System identification

Each AC power supply unit (PSU) has an illuminated translucent handle that indicates whether power is
present or whether a power fault has occurred.

Convention Power Indicator
Pattern Condition
A Green A valid power source is connected to the PSU and the PSU is
operational.
B Flashing green When the PSU firmware is being updated, the PSU handle flashes
green.
CAUTION: Do not disconnect the power cord or unplug the
PSU when updating firmware. If firmware update is
interrupted, the PSUs do not function. You must roll back
thePSU firmware by using Lifecycle controller. For more
information, see Dell Lifecycle Controller User’s Guide at
Dell.com/idracmanuals.
C Flashing green
and turns off
When hot-adding a PSU, the PSU handle flashes green five times at
4 Hz rate and turns off. This indicates that there is a PSU mismatch
with respect to efficiency, feature set, health status, and supported
voltage. Ensure that both the PSUs are the same.
CAUTION: For AC PSUs, use only PSUs with the Extended
Power Performance (EPP) label on the back. Mixing PSUs from
previous generations of Dell PowerEdge servers can result in a
PSU mismatch condition or failure to power on.
D Flashing amber Indicates a problem with the PSU.

Convention Power Indicator
Pattern Condition
CAUTION: When correcting a PSU mismatch, replace only the
PSU with the flashing indicator. Swapping the other PSU to
make a matched pair can result in an error condition and
unexpected system shutdown. To change from a High Output
configuration to a Low Output configuration or vice versa,
you must turn off the system.
CAUTION: AC PSUs support both 220 V and 110 V input
voltages with the exception of Titanium PSUs, which support
only 220 V. When two identical PSUs receive different input
voltages, they can output different wattages, and trigger a
mismatch.
CAUTION: If two PSUs are used, they must be of the same type
and have the same maximum output power.
CAUTION: Combining AC and DC PSUs is not supported and
triggers a mismatch.
E Not lit Power is not connected.
Indicator codes for non-redundant power supply unit
Press the self-diagnostic button to perform a quick health check on the non-redundant cabled power
supply unit (PSU) of the system.

Performing initial system configuration
After you receive your system, you must set up your system, install the operating system if it is not pre-
installed, and set up and configure the system iDRAC IP address.
Setting up your system
1. Unpack the system.
2. Install the system into the rack. For more information about installing the system into the rack, see
your system Rack Installation Placemat at Dell.com/dssmanuals.
3. Connect the peripherals to the system.
4. Connect the system to its electrical outlet.
5. Turn the system on by pressing the power button.
6. Turn on the attached peripherals.
Setting up and configuring the BMC IP address
You can set up the Integrated Dell Baseboard Management Controller (BMC) IP address by using one of
the following interfaces:
• iDRAC Settings utility
• Dell OpenManage Deployment Toolkit
You can use the default BMC IP address 192.168.0.120 to configure the initial network settings, including
setting up DHCP or a static IP for BMC.
You can configure iDRAC IP address by using the following interfaces:
NOTE: Ensure that you change the default user name and password after setting up the BMC IP
address.
• BMC web interface. For more information, see the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller 8 User's
Guide.
• Remote Access Controller ADMin (RACADM). For more information, see the RACADM Command Line
Interface Reference Guide and the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller User's Guide.
• Remote Services that include Web Services Management (WS-Man).

Logging in to BMC
You can log in to BMC as a BMC local user, a Microsoft Active Directory user, or a Lightweight Directory
Access Protocol (LDAP) user. You can also log in by using Single Sign-On or a Smart Card. The default

user name is root and password is calvin. For more information about logging in to iDRAC and iDRAC
licenses, see the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller User's Guide at Dell.com/idracmanuals.
You can also access iDRAC by using RACADM. For more information, see the RACADM Command Line
Interface Reference Guide and the Integrated Dell Remote Access Controller User's Guide available at
Dell.com/idracmanuals.
Installing the operating system
If the server is shipped without an operating system, install the supported operating system on the server
using the following methods:
• Dell Systems Management Tools and Documentation media. See the operating system
documentation at Dell.com/operatingsystemmanuals.
For information about the list of operating systems supported on your system, see the operating systems
support matrix at Dell.com/ossupport.
Managing your system remotely
To perform out-of-band systems management by using BMC, you must configure BMC for remote
accessibility, set up the management station and managed system, and configure the supported web
browsers. For more information about logging in to BMC and iDRAC licenses, see the Integrated Dell
Remote Access Controller 8 User’s Guide at Dell.com/idracmanuals.
Downloading drivers and firmware
It is recommended that you download and install the latest BIOS, drivers, and systems management
firmware on your system.
Prerequisites
Ensure that you clear the web browser cache.
Steps
1. Go to Dell.com/support/drivers.
2. In the Product Selection section, enter the Service Tag of your system in the Service Tag or Express
Service Code field.
NOTE: If you do not have the Service Tag, select Automatically detect my Service Tag for me
to enable the system to automatically detect your Service Tag, or select Choose from a list of a
Dell products to select your product from the Product Selection page.
3. Click Get drivers and downloads.
The drivers that are applicable to your selection are displayed.
4. Download the drivers you require to a USB drive.

Pre-operating system management
applications
The pre-operating system management applications for your system help you manage different settings
and features without booting to the operating system.
Your system has the following pre-operating system management applications:
• System Setup
• Boot Manager
Navigation keys
The navigation keys can help you quickly access the pre-operating system management applications.
Key Description
F2 Enables you to enter System Setup.
F11 Enables you to enter Boot Manager.
F12 Enables you to enter PXE Boot.
Page Up Enables you to move to the previous screen.
Page Down Enables you to move to the next screen.
Up arrow Enables you to move to the previous field.
Down arrow Enables you to move to the next field.
Enter Enables you to type a value in the selected field (if applicable).
Spacebar Enables you to expand or collapse a drop-down list, if applicable.
Tab Enables you to move to the next menu item.
NOTE: This feature is applicable only for the standard graphic browser.
Esc Enables you to move to the previous page until you view the main screen. Pressing
Esc in the main screen exits System BIOS, iDRAC Settings, Device Settings, or
Service Tag Settings, and proceeds with system boot.
F1 Displays the system setup help.
