Preface
This manual explains how to install the IP4700, install or replace the
Standby Power Supply (SPS), and how to replace
customer-replaceable units (CRUs). It is intended for technical
personnel and system administrators who will install and maintain
the IP4700 system hardware.
Most rackmount systems are fully assembled, with the storage
systems installed in a cabinet. If you intend to install the IP4700 in a
rackmount cabinet already on site, we assume that you have installed
the appropriate mounting tray and rails as described in the
instructions that accompany the mounting kit.
If you will install and service the IP4700, you should read this
manual. After reading it, you will be able to
• install an IP4700
• upgrade an IP4700 by adding disk modules and disk-array
enclosures (DAEs)
•replace failed CRUs
•install, service, and use the DC Standby Power Supply (DC SPS)

This unit has two power supply cords. To reduce the risk of electric
shock, disconnect both power supply cords before servicing.
Ground circuit continuity is vital for safe operation of the machine.
Never operate the machine with grounding conductors disconnected.
Remember to reconnect any grounding conductors removed for or
during any installation procedure.

Static Precautions EMC incorporates state-of-the-art technology in its designs, including
the use of LSI and VLSI components. These chips are very susceptible
to damage caused by static discharge and need to be handled
accordingly.
CAUTION

Before handling IP4700 printed-circuit boards or other IP4700 parts
containing LSI and/or VLSI components, observe the following
precautions:
•Store all printed-circuit boards in anti-static bags.
•Use a ground strap whenever you handle a printed-circuit
board.
•Unless specifically designed for non-disruptive replacement,
never plug or unplug printed-circuit boards with the power on.
Severe component damage may result.

The IP4700
About the IP4700
The IP4700 (see Figure 1-1) is an intelligent, highly available,
high-performance, high-capacity, disk-array file server storage
system. It uses multiple LAN connections to communicate with
servers and clients, and a Fibre Channel Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) as
its disk interconnect. The IP4700 is installed in a rackmount cabinet,
and its modular, scalable design supports additional file storage.
An IP4700 disk-array processor enclosure (DPE) includes two storage
processors (SPs). On some models, four 10/100 Mbps Ethernet ports
on each storage processor provide connection to up to four different
internet protocol (IP) subnetworks. Other models include a single
one-gigabit Ethernet port on each SP. In addition, an integrated
Ethernet device on each SP supports administrative and management
functions. A single low-voltage differential/single-ended (LVD/SE)
small computer system interface (SCSI) port also provides connection
to an optional tape backup device.
