System Configuration Guide 1-1
This guide provides information on configuring your system and the server modules in your
system. The guide provides a starting point for system configuration; however, additional
information is available from additional sources.
Your system can include up to six server modules (or blades). Each server module functions
as an individual system encompassing up to two microprocessors, up to two hard drives, and
up to two memory modules. To function as a system, a server module is inserted into a
system that includes power supplies, fans, a system management module, and at least one
network switch module. The power supplies, fans, system management module, and
network switch module are shared resources of the server modules in the system. In
addition, your system may also ship with a USB diskette drive and a USB CD drive, which
you can use for system setup and configuration. Figure 1-1 shows the drive shelf attached so
that you can load software.

The network switch module and a system management module require additional
configuration. The system management module contains the keyboard, video, and mouse
(KVM) switch and the embedded remote access circuitry and firmware used to configure
systems management software. Figure 1-2 shows the location of the back-panel features.

When You Begin
1Unpack the system and install it in a rack.
2Connect power to the power supplies.
3Connect the keyboard, video, and mouse to the KVM switch on the management
module.
4Use the KVM switch to select a server module. See "Using the KVM Switch." Online
help is available while using the KVM switch.
5If required, configure the hard drives for RAID 1 or integrated mirroring. It is
recommended that you configure RAID 1 prior to installation of the operating system.

NOTICE: The system management module and the network switch module(s) are DHCP-
enabled. If you have a DHCP server on your network, the server will provide a dynamic IP
address to the modules and will permit configuration by way of the network. Steps 6 and 7 are
not required unless you need to configure a static IP address.
6Configure the system management module IP address and time using the serial port
on the management module. See "Using Remote Access Features."
7Assign IP addresses to the network switch modules using the serial port on the system
management module. See "Using the Network Switch Module."
8Use the Dell OpenManage Server Assistant CD to load an operating system (if an
operating system has not been installed) and to configure drivers. See "Using the Dell
OpenManage Server Assistant CD" in the User’s Guide.
9To create an image of the server module, use Dell OpenManage™ Remote Install to
duplicate the server module’s configuration. Use the Dell OpenManage Systems
Management CD to install the systems management software, including Remote
Install software.
Using Remote Access Features
You can initially configure the system management module and the network switch module
using the serial port on the system management module, a client system, and a serial null
modem cable. Initial configuration allows you to configure a static IP address on the system
management and network switch modules. The system management module serial port
provides a command-line interface to configure features on the network switch module and
remote access features. The Ethernet interface provides system management access by way
of a browser-based graphical user interface (GUI). You can assign IP addresses to each
switch by using the remote access features. Assign an IP address to a server module using
the operating system. See the operating system documentation for more information. See
Figure 1-3 for detailed information on the system management module, which includes the
remote access features and the onboard KVM.
NOTE: Do not configure the system management module and the network switch
module on the same subnet.

Configuring the Client System
All versions of the Microsoft®Windows®operating system include Hilgraeve's
HyperTerminal terminal emulation software. However, the included version does not
provide many functions required during console redirection. Either upgrade to
HyperTerminal Private Edition 6.1 or later, or select new terminal emulation software.
NOTE: The examples in this section assume that you have upgraded to Hilgraeve's
HyperTerminal Private Edition 6.1 or later. If you are using other terminal emulation
software, see the documentation for that software.
1Connect the null modem cable to the serial port on the system management module
and to the client system.

2Click the Start button, point to Programs→Accessories→Communications, and
then click HyperTerminal.
3Enter a name for the new connection, select an icon, and then click OK.
4From the Connect to drop-down menu, select an available COM port, and then click
OK.
After you select an available COM port, the COM port properties window appears.
5Configure the port with the following settings:
•SetBits per second to 115200.
•SetData bits to 8.
•SetParity to None.
•SetStop bits to 1.
•SetFlow control to Hardware.
6Click OK.
7In HyperTerminal, click File, click Properties, and then click the Settings tab.
8Ensure that the Function, arrow, and Ctrl keys act as field is set to Terminal Keys.
9Ensure that the Backspace key sends field is set to Ctrl+H.
10 Change the Emulation setting from Auto detect to ANSI or VT 100/220.
Ensure that this setting is the same as the setting you selected for the Console
Redirection option on the server module.
11 Click Terminal Setup.
A setting for the number of rows and columns appears.
12 Change the number of rows from 24 to 26 and leave the number of columns at 80.
If you do not have these settings, you must upgrade your terminal emulation software.
13 Click OK twice.
14 Press <Enter> to get the serial console logon:
Username = root
Password = calvin
You are logged in to the remote access features on the system management module.

15 At the serial command prompt for the ERA/MC, type racadm getniccfg.
The system management module reports either the DHCP address or the static IP
address.
16 To set a static IP address, type racadm setniccfg - s <IP_address>
<subnet_mask> <gateway>.
17 Press <Enter>.
18 Ty p e racadm getncicfg and press <Enter>.
The current and static IP addresses are displayed.
19 Ty p e racreset and press <Enter> to reset the controller.
NOTICE: You must reconfigure the controller time when you perform a firmware update, RAC
reset, or lose AC power to the system.
20 To configure the controller time, type racadm setractime - <utctime> [-o
<offset>]
where utctime is the Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) in seconds and offset is
the local time minus Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) in minutes.
NOTE: It is recommended that you change the default user name and password. For
more information, see the Dell Embedded Remote Access/MC User’s Guide.
After setting the IP address on the system management module, you may use the module to
manage or monitor the server modules. After the initial configuration, you may use the
serial utility, the remote racadm utility, or the browser-based management utility. For
detailed information on using these utilities, see the Dell Embedded Remote Access/MC
User’s Guide and online help.
Using the Network Switch Module
The network switch module is DHCP client-enabled. After it is installed into the system
and connected to an external network, the network switch module functions properly.
Switch 1 (top) accesses LAN on motherboard (LOM1) on all of the server modules; switch
2 (bottom) accesses LOM2 on all of the server modules. For additional information on
using and configuring your switch (for example, port management or VLANs), see the
documentation CD that is shipped with your system. See Figure 1-4 for the location of the
indicators and ports on a network switch module.

You can configure the network switch module either through the serial port on the system
management module or by using the RJ11 serial null modem cable connected to the RJ11
serial port on the network switch module. A DB9–to–RJ11 cable is provided with the
network switch. Dell recommends using the serial port on the system management module
to configure the network switch module.
NOTE: Do not connect the RJ11 configuration port to a data or telephone network. Do
not connect the RJ11 serial cable to any of the 10/100/1000 BASE-T uplink ports.
To configure the network switch module using the serial port on the system management
module, perform the following steps:
1Perform steps 1 through 14 in "Configuring the Client System."
2After you have logged into the remote access portion of the system management
module, select one of the network switch modules.
• Type connect switch-1 to connect to the top network switch module.
• Type connect switch-2 to connect to the bottom network switch module.
3To log on to the network switch module console, type:
Username-admin
Password-admin
You are logged into the switch console. By default, the switch is DHCP client-enabled.
4To obtain the IP address of the network switch module, type #sh ip interface.

where #indicates the privileged mode, (config) represents the global configuration
mode, and (config-if) represents the interface configuration mode.
The network switch module can store multiple configuration files. The network switch
module prompts you for a filename for the configuration.

7Ty p e ~. and press <Enter> to return to the management console.
8To configure the second network switch module (if one is present), perform the
previous configuration steps.
NOTE: It is recommended that you change the default user name and password. For
further information, see the Dell PowerEdge Integrated Switch User’s Guide.
After the network switch module is configured, you may use the browser-based GUI, Telnet
consoles by way of the network, or continue to configure the network switch module using
the serial command-line utility. See the online Dell PowerEdge Integrated Switch User's
Guide for detailed information on configuration.
Integrating the System Into the Network
The Dell™ PowerEdge™ 1655MC is essentially a self-contained network. Table 1-2 and
Table 1-3 show the mapping of the internal and external ports.

NOTE: The 1/xindicates the switch port number xunder the CLI console interface.
The two integrated switches are completely independent.
The integrated switch module sets the four uplink ports in autonegotiation mode by
default. When both link partners are in autonegotiation mode, you can use either
straight-through or crossover cables to connect the network switch module to external
network devices, such as switches, routers, or NICs. When the uplink ports of the external
network device is configured in forced mode (for example, 100 Mbps full-duplex or 1000
Mbps full-duplex), configure the uplink ports of the integrated switch module in the same
mode.

For cabling in the forced mode, use the following recommendations:
• Use the crossover cable to connect the uplink port on the network switch module to a
MDI port of a link partner (for example, uplink port of a networked switch, router or
NIC).
• Use the straight-through cable to connect the uplink port on the network switch
module to a MID-X port of the link partner (for example, the normal port of a
networked switch).
Both link partners operate in forced speed and duplex mode.
Figure 1-5 and Figure 1-6 show two configurations of the PowerEdge 1655MC system
integrated into a network using external network switches. Although the network switches
require no additional configuration to integrate into your network, Dell recommends basic
configurations such as link aggregation or channeling to maximize performance and
availability of the network. In the following examples, the PowerEdge 1655MC has two
integrated network switch modules. If only one network switch module is in the system, all
of the server modules’ LOM1s share the network switch module.

In Figure 1-5, a four-port channel is set up on the external ports of the network switch
modules. A channel is a group of multiple physical lines where a control protocol logically
makes the links aggregate into a single virtual link. The channel provides high bandwidth
and link failover availability. You can select the number of uplink ports to aggregate (2 to 4)
depending on your bandwidth needs. The more uplink ports that are aggregated, the more
bandwidth you have into and out of the system. A channel can be created either statically or
dynamically, depending on the capabilities of the external network switch. The static
channel is compatible with Cisco EtherChannel. The dynamic channel uses IEEE 802.3ad
link aggregation control protocol (LACP).
NOTE: Do not connect multiple uplink ports to an external network switch without
using a link aggregation protocol. The spanning tree protocol blocks three of the
network connections to resolve the loops.
A channel can be configured using the network switch module browser-based GUI (using
the Link Aggregation tab) or through the command-line interface using the serial port. The
ports on the external switch must have EtherChannel- or LACP- compatible channels
configured.
Configuring a Static Channel
To configure a static channel on the network switch module from the system management
module serial port, perform the following steps:

where #indicates the privileged mode, (config) represents the global configuration

A static trunk of the four uplink ports is created.
4Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the second network switch module.
5To save your configuration, type #copy running-config startup-config.

Configuring a Dynamic Channel
To configure a dynamic channel on all external ports from the serial connection on the
network switch module, perform the following steps:

2Repeat the commands in step 2 on ports 8, 9, and 10.
A dynamic trunk of the four uplink ports is created by LACP.
3Repeat steps 1 and 2 for the second network switch module.

When both network switch modules are connected to the same subnet (see Figure 1-5),
smart load balancing (SLB) can be used to "team" the LOMs to prevent spanning tree
protocol from shutting down links and to provide load balancing and failover. SLB is
configured through the Broadcom Advanced Server Program, which is on the Dell
OpenManage Server Assistant CD. SLB is the only LOM teaming method supported on the
PowerEdge 1655MC.
NOTE: When you use the Broadcom drivers to configure an SLB team, the software
only performs failover on the local link (the LOM on the server module). The SLB
software cannot detect remote link failover at the uplink ports of the network switch
module. To protect against link failure, configure channeling on multiple uplink ports
on the network switch module.
NOTE: When you use the Broadcom drivers to configure an SLB team on the server
module, failure or removal of the network switch module does not cause disruption in
network traffic. However, hot-adding of a network switch module causes temporary
disruption of network traffic while the switch is booting since SLB software tries to
balance the network traffic before the switch is ready.

To configure the static channel on integrated switch modules to two external switches (see
Figure 1-6), see "Configuring a Static Channel." Configure the dynamic channel for each
external switch. See "Configuring a Dynamic Channel."
Using the KVM Switch
The onboard KVM switch allows you to select the keyboard, video, and mouse from one
server module to another. In addition, the KVM switch module can be connected to a
KVM-over-IP switch so that you can monitor multiple systems in a rack. The analog rack
interface port (see Figure 1-3) connects to an external KVM-over-IP switch. Figure 1-7
shows an example of how the system can be managed by connecting directly to the onboard
KVM switch.

The KVM uses the On-Screen Configuration and Activity Reporting (OSCAR) interface,
which has menus to configure your system and select server modules. OSCAR has online
help to assist you in configuration.
Viewing and Selecting Ports and Servers
Use the Main dialog box to view, configure, and control server modules. You can view each
module by name, port, or by the unique electronic identification number (EID). An
OSCAR-generated name list displays by default when you initially launch OSCAR.
To access the Main dialog box:
1Press <Print Screen> to launch OSCAR.
The Main dialog box appears.
2If a password has been assigned, the Password dialog box appears.
