General System Configuration
This guide provides information on configuring your system and the server modules in your system.
Additional information is available from additional sources. See "Other Documents You May
Need."
Your system can include up to ten server modules (also known as "blades"). See Figure 1-1. Each
server module functions as an individual server encompassing up to two microprocessors, up to two
hard drives, and up to six memory modules.
NOTE: To ensure proper operation and cooling, all server module bays must be populated at all times
with either a module or with a blank.

To function as a system, a server module is inserted into a chassis that supports power supplies,
fan modules, a management module (Dell™ Remote Access Controller/Modular Chassis
[DRAC/MC]), a keyboard/video/mouse (KVM) switch module, and at least one I/O module for
network connectivity (see Figure 1-2.) The power supplies, fans, DRAC/MC, and I/O modules are
shared resources for the server modules in the chassis. In addition, your system may also ship with
an optional external USB diskette drive and an optional external USB CD drive, which you can use
to set up and configure the server modules.

Initial Setup
1 Unpack the system and install it in a rack.
See the
Getting Started Guide and Rack Installation Guide for more information.
2 Connect power to the power supplies.
NOTE: Dell recommends that you power up the chassis prior to inserting server modules if
Ethernet switch modules are installed. The Ethernet switch may take longer to boot than the server
modules, which may cause functions like PXE to fail due to the Ethernet switch not being fully
booted and ready to send packets.
3 Connect the keyboard, video, and mouse to the KVM module.
Figure 1-3 shows the basic cabling configuration for a KVM module.

4 If required, configure the hard drives for RAID 1 or integrated mirroring. It is recommended
that you configure RAID 1 prior to installation of the operating system. See "Configuring
Drive Mirroring With PERC 4/im Integrated RAID" for more information.
NOTE: If you ordered your server module configured for RAID 1 from Dell, then your server module
is already configured.
5 If required, set up console redirection on the server module to either the BMC or to the
DRAC/MC module serial port in the server module System Setup program. See "Enabling
and Configuring the DRAC/MC to Use a Serial or Telnet Console."
NOTICE: To prevent possible network disruptions, ensure that you assign a static IP address, IP subnet
mask, and gateway to the BMC before connecting to the network. The assigned static BMC address
must match the LOM_1 address of one of the server modules. For more information on configuring and
using the BMC, see "Assigning a Static Address to the BMC."

6 Connect a management station to the DRAC/MC serial port using a null modem cable.
See "Configuring the Client System" in "Configuring the DRAC/MC."
NOTICE: The DRAC/MC module and the network switch module(s) can be configured for DHCP. If you
have a DHCP server on your network, the server will provide a dynamic IP address to the modules and
will permit configuration by way of the network. If you configure the modules for DHCP, then step 7 and
step 9 are not required unless you need to configure a static IP address. See the Dell Remote Access
Controller/Modular Chassis User’s Guide and the Dell PowerConnect 5316M User's Guide for instructions
on how to configure those modules for DHCP.
7 Configure the DRAC/MC module with an IP address and the current time. See the Dell
Remote Access Controller/Modular Chassis User’s Guide
for additional configuration options.
8 If required, switch the serial console to the network switch module console interface using the
DRAC/MC command line interface (CLI).
9 Assign IP addresses to the network switch modules using the serial port on the DRAC/MC
module. See "Configuring the PowerConnect 5316M Ethernet Switch Module."
Configuring Drive Mirroring With PERC 4/im Integrated RAID
NOTE: If you ordered your server module configured for RAID 1 from Dell, then RAID 1 is already
enabled.
Use the following procedures to configure drive mirroring (RAID 1) before installing an operating
system on the server module. If an operating system is preinstalled, you may use the following
instructions or use the array management software provided with the system. For detailed
information on integrated mirroring, see the
Dell PowerEdge RAID Controller 4/im Integrated
Mirroring Guide
.
The following message appears during POST:
Press Crtl-M to start LSI Logic Configuration Utility...
1 Press <Ctrl> <M>.
2Press <Enter> to display the Adapter Properties Menu for the highlighted adapter.
3Select the Mirroring Properties Menu.

Press <Enter> to view or modify the mirroring.
NOTE: Two drives must be installed to enable integrated mirroring.
The two installed SCSI drives are listed with their SCSI IDs.

Select the primary drive.
6Ensure that the Mirrored Pair field is set to Primary.
7Select the remaining drive.

8Ensure that the Mirror Pair field for the remaining drive is set to Secondary.
The drive that is set to secondary will mirror the primary drive. All other data on the
secondary drive will be lost.
9Press <Esc> to exit the Adapter Properties Menu.
10 Select Save changes and exit this menu and press <Enter>.
After pressing <Enter>, you are prompted to confirm the change by pressing <Enter> again
and then by pressing <F3>.
11 Press <Esc> to exit the Main Menu.
12 Select Exit the Configuration Utility and press <Enter>.
The server module reboots and shows mirrored status after POST.
Additional Integrated Mirroring Guidelines
• The hard-drive status indicator does not display any status information until after the
operating system driver initialization has occurred. To check for status information of a hard
drive prior to operating system load, use <Ctrl><M> during POST. See the
Dell PowerEdge
Expandable RAID Controller 4/IM User’s Guide
for more information. During normal
operation, the status indicator is off.
NOTE: The hard-drive activity indicator functions normally before and after the operating system
driver initialization.
NOTICE: If you use a drive with existing data, the data will be cleared before the hard drive is added to
amirror.
• It is recommended that any replacement drives should be blank and not previously
configured.
• It is recommended that you replace hard drives in an integrated-mirror configuration with
drives of the same capacity.
• After removing a hard drive in a hot-pluggable environment, wait at least 30 seconds prior
to installing the new hard drive.

Configuring the DRAC/MC
This section includes general configuration information for the DRAC/MC module. For detailed
information on using the remote management features of the system, see
the Dell Remote Access
Controller/Modular Chassis User’s Guide.
Enabling and Configuring the DRAC/MC to Use a Serial or Telnet Console
The DRAC/MC supports a serial and Telnet interface for its command line interface (CLI) and has
the capability to switch this serial interface to any server module or switch module within a
chassis.The following subsections provide information about how to enable and configure a
serial/Telnet console on the DRAC/MC.
NOTE: The connect server-x serial command requires that the server module’s Serial Port setting under
the BIOS setup group Integrated Devices be set to DRAC/MC. When a Telnet session is established to the
DRAC/MC and the setting of this server module’s serial port is not DRAC/MC, connect server-x yields a
blank screen.
NOTE: By default, Telnet is in the OFF state on the DRAC/MC module. See "Enabling the Telnet Console"
to turn this port ON.
Configuring the System Setup Program on the Server Module
If required, the DRAC/MC provides the capability to redirect a server module's text console
through the serial port or Telnet interface. Perform the following steps to configure your System
Setup program to redirect text console from a server module to the DRAC/MC serial or Telnet
interface.
NOTE: You must configure the System Setup Program in conjunction with the connect serial/telnet
command.
NOTE: You must perform the following sequence of commands locally. Once you have completed these
steps, you can redirect the server console to the DRAC/MC remotely.
1 Turn on or restart your server module.
2 Press <F2> immediately after you see the following message:
<F2> = System Setup
3 Scroll down and select Console Redirection .

4 Set the Console Redirection screen to the following settings:
Console Redirection – DRAC/MC or BMC Serial Over LAN (SOL)
NOTE: Selecting DRAC/MC sends the server module's text console to the DRAC/MC which sends it
through the serial port or Telnet interface as required. Selecting BMC Serial Over LAN (SOL) sends
the server module's text console to the BMC and out the server module's primary Ethernet
controller.
Remote Terminal Type – ANSI or VT100/VT200 depending on your specific needs
Redirection After Boot – Enabled
NOTE: If your terminal is in VT100 mode and you are unable to see the proper selection, go to the
Properties menu and change the terminal to VT200. Your selection should now be visible. Any
cursor movement causes you to lose the selection. If you lose your selection, switch back to VT100,
and the selection is displayed again.
5 Press <Esc> to exit the server module’s System Setup program to complete the server
module’s System Setup program configuration.
Assigning a Static Address to the BMC
NOTICE: To prevent possible network disruptions, ensure that you assign a static IP address, IP subnet
mask, and gateway to the BMC before connecting to the network. The assigned static BMC address
must match the LOM_1 address of one of the server modules.
The static address of the BMC must match the address of LOM_1 of one the server modules before
connecting to the network to ensure proper communications. For instructions on how to assign a
static IP address, IP subnet mask, and gateway to the BMC, see the
Dell OpenManage Baseboard
Management Controller User’s Guide.
Configuring the Client System
All versions of the Microsoft
®
Windows
®
operating system include Hilgraeve's HyperTerminal
terminal emulation software. However, the included version does not provide many functions
required during console redirection. Either upgrade to HyperTerminal Private Edition 6.3, or select
new terminal emulation software.
NOTE: The examples in this section assume that you have upgraded to Hilgraeve's HyperTerminal
Private Edition 6.3. (Only Hilgraeve's HyperTerminal Private Edition 6.3 using Windows Server 2003 is
supported.) If you are using other terminal emulation software, see the documentation for that software.
NOTICE: When using HyperTerminal with the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system, ensure that
you have Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 or later installed. The arrow keys function properly in
HyperTerminal’s VT100 emulation with Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.
1 Connect the null modem cable to the serial port on the DRAC/MC module and to the client
system.
2 Click the Start button, point to Programs → Accessories → Communications , and then click
HyperTerminal .

3 Enter a name for the new connection, select an icon, and then click OK .
4 From the Connect to drop-down menu, select an available COM port, and then click OK .
After you select an available COM port, the COM port properties window appears.
5 Configure the port with the following settings:
•Set
Bits per second to 115200 .
•Set
Data bits to 8 .
•Set
Parity to None .
•Set
Stop bits to 1 .
•Set
Flow control to None .
• Under
Properties , select VT100 for Emulation mode.
• Select
Terminal keys for Function , Arrow , and Ctrl keys .
Ensure that the setting is for
Terminal keys— not Windows keys .
6 Click OK .
The DRAC/MC application displays a login screen on the console monitor.
7 Log into the DRAC/MC using the default username root and password calvin .
The DRAC/MC CLI command prompt
DRAC/MC: is displayed.
NOTE: Dell recommends changing the default username and password names. See the Dell
Remote Access Controller/Modular Chassis User's Guide for instructions.
8 If the system chassis is powered off, power on the chassis using the following DRAC/MC CLI
command:
racadm chassisaction -m chassis powerup
NOTE: The Ethernet switch module inserted into the chassis I/O bay is powered on automatically
when the system chassis is powered on. For more information on configuring the system chassis
using the DRAC/MC CLI interface, see the Dell Remote Access Controller/Modular Chassis User's
Guide.

9 To set the DRAC/MC time, type:

10 If required, assign a static IP address using the following DRAC/MC CLI command:
racadm setniccfg -s [<ipAddress> <netmask> <gateway>]
The specific address information must be obtained from your network administrator. In the
following example, 192.168.0.120 is the DRAC/MC default static IP address, 255.255.255.0 is
the subnet mask address, and 192.168.1.1 is the gateway address.
racadm setniccfg -s 192.168.0.120 255.255.255.0 192.168.1.1

Press <Enter>.

The current and static IP addresses are displayed.
13 If desired, enable Telnet access to the DRAC/MC using the following DRAC/MC CLI
command:
racadm config -g cfgSerial -o cfgSerialTelnetEnable 1
NOTE: See "Enabling and Configuring the DRAC/MC to Use a Serial or Telnet Console" for additional
information.
14 Ty p e racreset and press <Enter> to reset the controller.
15 Redirect the DRAC/MC serial console to the Ethernet switch module internal serial console
interface by entering the following command:
connect switch-n
where n is the system chassis I/O module bay number in which the Ethernet switch module is
installed.
NOTE: To switch back to the context of the DRAC/MC CLI command prompt, press <Enter><~><.>.

After the Ethernet switch module is connected to the console, wait until the Ethernet switch
module is fully booted. Observe the booting information being displayed on the terminal
window and wait for the Ethernet switch module CLI
console> prompt to appear. Press
<Enter> several times to ensure that the terminal connection is successfully established and
the Ethernet switch module can be configured through the CLI.
NOTE: The Ethernet switch module’s system indicator is off when the module is enabled and
operating normally. If the switch has been disabled by the DRAC/MC, or there are hardware or
firmware issues, the indicator will turn green.
Enabling the Serial and/or Telnet Console on the DRAC/MC
The following subsections provide information about how to enable the serial and/or Telnet
console.
Enabling the Telnet Console
NOTE: You (the current user) must have Configure DRAC/MC permission in order to perform the steps
in this section.
The DRAC/MC serial console is enabled by default; to enable the Telnet console (disabled by
default):
1 Type the following serial CLI command:
racadm config -g cfgSerial -o cfgSerialTelnetEnable 1
NOTE: For detailed information about how to use the racadm CLI and serial/telnet commands,
see "Using the serial and racadm CLI Commands" in the Dell Remote Access Controller/Modular
Chassis User’s Guide.

Connecting to the DRAC/MC Through the Local Serial Port or Telnet Management Station
(Client System)
The serial console is available through the DRAC/MC serial connector. Only one serial client can
be connected at any given time.
The Telnet console is available on the DRAC/MC through the DRAC/MC NIC. Only one Telnet
client can be connected at any given time.
NOTE: If a Telnet client is attached to the DRAC/MC, and another client attempts a Telnet connection,
the second client will receive only a blank screen in response.
The serial/Telnet connection to the DRAC/MC serial or Telnet console requires the use of
management station terminal emulation software. For more information, see "Configuring the
Management Station Terminal Emulation Software" in the
Dell Remote Access Controller/Modular
Chassis User’s Guide.

Using DRAC/MC Remote Access Features
You can initially configure the DRAC/MC module and the network switch module using the serial
port on the DRAC/MC module, a client system, and a serial null modem cable. Initial
configuration allows you to configure a static IP address on the DRAC/MC and network switch
modules. The DRAC/MC uses the default static IP address of 192.168.0.120, which is configurable
by the user. The default static IP address can be used to for the management station to bring up the
DRAC/MC configuration screen.
The DRAC/MC module serial port provides a interface to configure the DRAC/MC itself and/or
any of the I/O switch modules through their respective CLI. After an IP address is set, they can be
managed through their graphical user interfaces (GUI) or through their Telnet CLI, or you can
continue to use the serial interface.
To assign an IP address to a server module using the operating system, see the operating system
documentation for more information.
Updating the DRAC/MC Module Firmware
Use the fwupdate subcommand to update the DRAC/MC module firmware.
NOTE: To use this command, you must have Configure DRAC/MC permission. See "Subcommand Man
Pages" in the Dell Remote Access Controller/Modular Chassis User’s Guide for more information.
Table 1-1 describes the fwupdate subcommand.
Synopsis
racadm fwupdate -a < ip address > -d < qualified filename > [-D]
Description
The fwupdate subcommand allows the caller to update the firmware on the DRAC/MC. The user
can instruct the DRAC/MC firmware to get the firmware update file from a TFTP server and load
it into the DRAC/MC flash.
NOTICE: Running the fwupdate subcommand prompts the DRAC/MC to reboot into a fwupdate mode,
which causes all Telnet and web connections to be dropped. To see the progress of the update, you must
be connected to the serial console via the serial connection on the DRAC/MC.

fwupdate Allows the caller to update the firmware on the DRAC/MC.

Table 1-2 describes the fwupdate subcommand options.
Output
Status of the TFTP upload can only be seen from a serial connection to the DRAC/MC since the
DRAC/MC Telnet and web server services are shut down during the upload. This is to ensure that
the card does not receive interrupts that might impact the firmware update.
NOTE: You can download a TFTP server from http:\\solarwinds.net.For information on installing
and configuring the SolarWinds TFTP server, refer to the SolarWinds website.
Integrating the System Into the Network
Your system is essentially a self-contained network. Table 1-3 and Table 1-4 show the mapping
of the internal and external ports.

Option Description
-a The IP Address option specifies the IP address of the TFTP server.
-d The -d option specifies the path and filename of the firmware update file on the TFTP server.
-D After the update is complete, reset all firmware configuration parameters to the default
values. For more information, see "racresetcfg" in the Dell Remote Access Controller/Modular
Chassis User’s Guide.

NOTE: The 1/xindicates the switch port number xunder the CLI.
The switch module sets the six uplink ports in autonegotiation mode by default. When both link
partners are in autonegotiation mode, you can use either straight-through or crossover cables to
connect the network switch module to external network devices, such as switches, routers, or NICs.
