Microprocessor Board Upgrade
Guide
WARNING: The power supplies in this computer system produce high volt-
ages and energy hazards, which can cause bodily harm. Only trained
service technicians are authorized to remove the computer cover and
access any of the components inside the computer.
This document provides instructions for upgrading the microprocessor boards in your
Dell PowerEdge 8450 system to support newer versions of the Intel®Pentium®III
microprocessor.
NOTICE: Do not mix different versions of the Intel Pentium III microproces-
sor in your system.
Before You Begin
Before beginning the installation procedure, follow the guidelines in “Microprocessor
Restrictions,” “Update the System BIOS,” and “Required Tools,” found later in this
document.
Microprocessor Restrictions
When upgrading the microprocessors in your system after installing the new micro-
processor boards, do not mix different versions of the Pentium III microprocessor. In
addition, all microprocessors should have the same operating speed and cache size.
Update the System BIOS
Before installing the new microprocessor boards, you must update the basic input/
output system (BIOS), using the bootable flash BIOS diskette provided in this upgrade
kit, or by downloading the latest BIOS from http://support.dell.com. (This download
creates a bootable flash BIOS diskette.) Versions of the system BIOS prior to version
A03 do not support the latest microprocessor versions.

To update the system BIOS from the flash BIOS diskette, boot the system from the
diskette and follow the on-screen instructions.
Required Tools
The upgrade procedure requires the use of the following tools:
•1/4-inch nut driver, preferably with magnetic insert
•Wrist grounding strap for electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection
•Antistatic mat
•Key to the system keylock
•#2 Phillips screwdriver
Precautionary Measures
Before you remove the computer covers, perform the following steps in the sequence
indicated.
CAUTION: Do not attempt to service the computer system yourself, except
as explained in this guide and elsewhere in Dell documentation. Always
follow installation and service instructions closely.
CAUTION: To help avoid possible damage to the system board, wait
5 seconds after turning off the system before removing a component from
the system board or disconnecting a peripheral device from the computer.
1. Touch an unpainted metal surface on the chassis, such as the metal around the
card-slot openings at the back of the computer, before touching anything inside
your computer.
While you work, periodically touch an unpainted metal surface on the computer
chassis to dissipate any static electricity that might harm internal components.
2. Turn off your computer and any peripherals.
3. Disconnect your computer and peripherals from their power sources. Also, dis-
connect any telephone or telecommunication lines from the computer. Doing so
reduces the potential for personal injury or shock.
In addition, take note of these safety guidelines when appropriate:
•When you disconnect a cable, pull on its connector or on its strain-relief loop, not
on the cable itself. Some cables have a connector with locking tabs; if you are dis-
connecting this type of cable, press in on the locking tabs before disconnecting
the cable. As you pull connectors apart, keep them evenly aligned to avoid bend-
ing any connector pins. Also, before you connect a cable, make sure both
connectors are correctly oriented and aligned.

•Handle components and cards with care. Don’t touch the components or con-
tacts on a card. Hold a card by its edges or by its metal mounting bracket. Hold a
component such as a microprocessor chip by its edges, not by its pins.
Removing the Existing Microprocessor
Boards
To remove the microprocessor boards, perform the following steps.
NOTICE: Before proceeding, ensure that you have upgraded the system
BIOS to version A03 or later. See “Update the System BIOS” found earlier
in this document.
CAUTION: The microprocessors can get extremely hot during system
operation. Be sure that the system has had sufficient time to cool before
you begin this procedure.
WARNING: Before you perform this procedure, you must turn off the com-
puter and disconnect it from its AC power source. For more information, see
“Safety First—For You and Your Computer” in your system’s Installation and
Troubleshooting Guide.
1. Turn off the system, including any attached peripherals, and disconnect the AC
power cable from its power source.
NOTICE: See “Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge” in the safety
instructions at the front of your system’s Installation and Troubleshooting
Guide.
Before working on components inside the system, use a wrist grounding strap
for ESD protection.
2. Disconnect all cables from the system.
3. Loosen the thumbscrews on either side of the front bezel that secure the
computer to the rack.
4. Slide the computer away from the rack.

5. To remove the computer cover, perform the following steps:
a. Using the 1/4-inch nut driver, remove the two screws securing the cover to
the chassis (see step 1 in Figure 1-1).

b. Slide the cover a half-inch (about a centimeter) or so toward the back of the
computer (step 2 in Figure 1-1), and grasp the top of the cover at both ends.
c. Carefully lift the cover straight up and away from the chassis (step 3 in
Figure 1-1).
6. To remove the microprocessors and terminator cards, perform the following
steps:
a. Using a #2 Phillips screwdriver or your thumbs, loosen the retention screws
and release the retainingclip from the microprocessor cage (see steps 1 and
2 in Figure 1-2).
b. Using your thumbs, lift the latches on each corner of the microprocessor
assembly or terminator card (see step 3 in Figure 1-2).

c. Slide the microprocessor assembly or terminator card up and out of the
microprocessor cage and place it on an antistatic mat.
d. Repeat steps a through c to remove the remaining microprocessors or
terminator cards.

7. To remove the front bezel of the computer, perform the following steps:
a. Press the right edge of the system badge on the front bezel to release the
catch on the system badge. Press the left edge of the system badge to
access the keylock (see step 1 in Figure 1-3).

b. Using the key provided with the system, unlock the bezel (step 2 in Figure 1-3).
c. Grasp the bezel by its upper and lower edges and pull the bezel forward to
disengage the mounting pins on the bezel from the system chassis (step 3 in
Figure 1-3).
8. To remove the memory board(s), perform the following steps:
a. To remove the memory-board cover, loosen the four captive thumbscrews
securing the memory-board cover to the front of the system chassis. Pull the
cover directly away from the system (see Figure 1-4).

b. Rotate the two memory-board retention levers outward about 90 degrees to
release the memory board (see Figure 1-4). Supporting the board by its
edges, slide the memory board out from the system and place it
component-side up on an antistatic surface.
c. Repeat steps a and b if a second memory board is installed.

9. To remove the cooling fans and fan bay housing, perform the following steps:
a. To access the fan bays, remove the fan bay cover's retention screw, releas-
ing the cover from the retention tabs, and lift the cover (see steps 1 through
3 in Figure 1-5).

b. Remove the six fans (step 4 in Figure 1-5).
c. Using the 1/4-inch nut driver, remove the three screws securing the fan bay
housing to the system chassis.
The three screws are at thefrontandat each end of the fan bay housing (see
Figure 1-6).

d. Remove the fan bay housing by lifting it straight up and out of the chassis
(see Figure 1-6).

10. To remove the control panel tray, perform the following steps:
a. Using the 1/4-inch nut driver, remove the ten screws securing the micropro-
cessor cage and the control panel tray to the chassis (see Figure 1-7).

b. Rotate the two tray extractor levers on each side of the control panel tray
toward you (see Figure 1-7).
c. Pull the control panel tray forward to clear it from the chassis, and place the
tray on a clean antistatic mat.

11. To release the microprocessor cage from the tray, perform the following steps:
a. Locate four rounded tabs on each side of the tray. Behind each are a pair of
tabs at the end of a plastic tab/latch assembly.
b. Squeeze the tabs (step 1 in Figure 8) and pull them out (step 2 in Figure 1-8).
c. This action releases the metal cage from a slotted plastic support. After all
four pair of tabs/latches are extended, lift the microprocessor cage away
from the microprocessor boards (step 3 in Figure 1-8).

12. Using the extractor tool, lift each microprocessor board off the profusion board,
being careful not to flex the boards.

Installing the New Microprocessor Boards
To install the new microprocessor boards, perform the following steps.
NOTICE: See “Protecting Against Electrostatic Discharge” in the safety
instructions at the front of your systems’s Installation and Troubleshooting
Guide.
1. To install a microprocessor board, position the board over the large connector on
the profusion board and press the microprocessor board into the profusion board
connector.
2. Repeat step 1 to install the second microprocessor board.
3. Install the microprocessor cage and press each plastic tab/latch in to latch the
microprocessor cage firmly in place.
NOTE: The microprocessor cage cannot lock if each microprocessor board is not
firmly seated in its connector.
4. Ensure that the microprocessor speed jumper is set correctly for the micropro-
cessor assembly installed.
Refer to Figure 1-9 for the location of the microprocessor speed jumpers. Refer to
your system’s Service Manual at http://support.dell.com for information on set-
ting the microprocessor speed jumpers.

5. Replace the control panel tray into the chassis and secure it with the ten screws.
6. Replace the fan bay housing and secure it with the three screws.
7. Replace the fans and fan bay cover.
8. Replace the memory board and memory board cover.
9. Install the microprocessor assemblies and terminator cards.
10. Replace the computer cover.
11. Replace the front bezel.
12. Slide the computer back into the rack.
13. Reconnect the computer and peripherals to electrical outlets, and turn them on.
14. Run the Dell Diagnostics to test the newly installed microprocessor boards and
microprocessors.

This completes the installation of the microprocessor boards.
