Updating Tape Drive Modules 1-1
This document provides procedures for updating your LTO-1 tape drive module to an
LTO-2 tape drive module in the Dell™ PowerVault™ 136T LTO tape library. You must
perform the following procedures to complete the update:
• Removing the LTO-1 drive modules
• Installing the LTO-2 drive modules
• Updating the tape library firmware
Removing the LTO-1 Drive Modules
NOTICE: You must fully complete the update from an LTO-1 tape library to an LTO-2 tape
library. LTO-1 tape drive modules and LTO-2 tape drive modules cannot be present in the same
tape library.
CAUTION: Before performing this procedure, read and follow the safety
instructions in your System Information Guide.
1Shut down the tape library.
2From the back of the library, remove the drive module by loosening the two captive
thumbscrews on each sled. See Figure 1-1.
3Slide the drive module out by its handle.
NOTE: If you are installing more LTO-2 drive modules than LTO-1 drive modules that you
just removed, then beginning with the lowest-available plate, remove the additional filler
plates by loosening the two captive thumbscrews.
Installing the LTO-2 Tape Modules
CAUTION: Before performing this procedure, read and follow the safety
instructions in your System Information Guide.
1Slide the new LTO-2 drive modules into place beginning with the lowest-available
slot. See Figure 1-1.
2Tighten the two captive thumbscrews on each drive module.
NOTE: If you are installing fewer LTO-2 drive modules than LTO-1 drive modules that you
just removed, then install a filler plate in each empty drive slot.

Updating the Tape Library Firmware
Use one of the following two methods to update the tape library firmware:
• Tape library serial port
• Remote management controller card
You must download the latest firmware package from the Dell Support website at
support.dell.com. After you download the package, the firmware file will be located at
c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\LTO2, where rxxxxx is the release number of the downloaded
firmware package.
Updating the Firmware Through the Serial Port
1Turn on the tape library.
2Connect one end of the straight-through serial cable to the tape library serial port.
3Connect the opposite end of the cable to a COM port on the system where you
downloaded the firmware file.

4Browse to the downloaded firmware file, open a command prompt in Microsoft®
Windows®, and then run the Dell_LTO2_Update <Com Port#>file, where
<Com Port#> represents the COM port to which the serial cable is connected.
NOTE: The downloaded firmware file is located at c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\LTO2,
where rxxxxx is the release number of the downloaded firmware package.
When the update is complete, the window closes. If the "#" sign only is displayed in
the download utility window, you must power-cycle the tape library to complete the
downloading process.
5After the update is complete, reboot the tape library.
6Ensure that the tape library operator panel does not display error messages.
The tape library firmware version can be verified in the About menu on the library’s
operator panel. The version is also displayed in the Library Firmware field on the main
Web page of the remote management controller card.
Updating the Firmware Using the Remote Management Controller Card
1Turn on the tape library and wait for the tape library to completely initialize.
NOTE: The following message might display during the tape library’s initial set up: "Your
library versions do not match. Download the latest version to
the library." Ignore this message.
2Open a Web browser on the system that contains the firmware file that you
downloaded.
3Enter the IP address of the remote management controller card that is installed in the
tape library that requires the updated firmware.
4Click the Firmware tab on the main page.
5Enter the administrator name and password for this tape library. The default user
name is admin and the default password is password.
6In the Select target for update dialog box that is displayed, select Update Library
Firmware.
7Click Browse and locate the firmware file that you downloaded.
NOTE: The downloaded firmware file is located at c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\LTO2,
where rxxxxx is the release number of the downloaded firmware package.
8Click Update Firmware.
The firmware update starts. Do not power-cycle or reset the tape library until the
firmware update completes.

9After the update is complete, reboot the tape library.
10 Ensure that the tape library operator panel does not display error messages.
The tape library firmware version can be verified in the About menu on the library’s
operator panel. The version is also displayed in the Library Firmware field on the main

1关闭磁带库。
2从库背面拧松每个滑板上的两颗系留指旋螺钉，从而卸下驱动器模块。参见
图2-1。
3抓住手柄，将驱动器模块滑出。
注意：如果您安装的 LTO-2 驱动器模块数量多于刚卸下的 LTO-1 驱动器模块数量，则
应该从最底部的可用挡板开始，拧松两颗系留指旋螺钉，卸下附加填充档板。
安装 LTO-2 驱动器模块

1从最底部的可用插槽开始，将新的 LTO-2 驱动器模块滑入到位。请参见图 2-1。
2拧紧每个驱动器模块上的两颗系留指旋螺钉。
注意：如果您安装的 LTO-2 驱动器模块数量少于刚卸下的 LTO-1 驱动器模块数量，则
应该在每个空闲的驱动器插槽中安装填充挡板。

更新磁带库固件
使用以下方法之一，更新磁带库固件：
•磁带库串行端口
•远程管理控制器卡
您必 从 Dell 支持网站 support.dell.com 下载最新的固件包。固件包下载后，固件文
件将位于 c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\LTO2 下，其中 rxxxxx 为所下载的固件包的发布
号。
通过串行端口更新固件
1打开磁带库。
2将直通式串行电缆的一端连接至磁带库串行端口。
3将电缆的另一端连接至系统的 COM 端口，该系统含有下载的固件文件。
4浏览到下载的固件文件，在 Microsoft®Windows®中打开一个命令提示符，然后运
行Dell_LTO2_Update <Com Port#> 文件，其中 <Com Port#> 代表与串行电缆
相连接的 COM 端口。
注意：下载的固件文件位于 c:\dell\drivers\rxxxxx\library\LTO2 下，其中 rxxxxx 为所下
载的固件包的发布号。
