Requirements
The following requirements apply to the S6100–ON system.
Hardware Requirements
The following lists the Dell S6100–ON system hardware requirements:
• Up to four I/O modules of 8 x 10/25/40/50/100 GbE QSFP28 port
• Up to four I/O modules of 16 x 10/40 GbE QSFP+ ports
• Up to four I/O modules of 4 x 10/25/40/50/100 GbE QSFP28 ports and 4 x 100 GbE CXP ports
• Up to one hundred twenty-eight 10G ports
• Up to one hundred twenty-eight 25G ports
• Up to sixty-four 40G ports
• Up to sixty-four 50G ports
• Up to thirty-two 100G ports
• One each RJ–45 management and console ports, micro universal serial bus (MicroUSB-B) 2.0 port,
and USB type A port

• Two small form-factor pluggable plus (SFP+) 10G ports
• Two AC or DC power supply units (PSUs)
• Four fans with airflow from the I/O side to the power supply unit (PSU) side or from the PSU side to
the I/O side (optional fan subsystem available)
The following lists the individual Dell S6100–ON system hardware components that are available to
order:
• Fan with airflow from I/O side to PSU side (red — normal air flow direction)
• Fan with airflow from PSU side to I/O side (blue — reversed air flow direction)
• AC or DC power supply with airflow from I/O side to PSU side
• AC or DC power supply with airflow from PSU side to I/O side
NOTE: Fan modules and power supplies are field replaceable units.
NOTE: All fans and PSUs must have the same airflow direction. If you mix the airflow direction, the
switch detects the discrepancy, issues an alarm, and may auto-shutdown to avoid heat damage to
components. You must correct the mixed airflow direction.

Important Information
The following is important information you need to know when working with your system.
I2C Bus
NOTE: After a thermal shutdown, the I2C bus could lock up occasionally. If this happens, you must
manually power cycle the system.

Direct Attach Cables (DACs)
CAUTION: When removing optics with direct attach cables (DACs) from the port, pull the release
tab firmly and steadily. If you have difficulties pulling out the cable, gently push the optic into the
port with one hand to ensure that is seated properly while at the same time pulling the release
tab slightly upwards (towards the cable/module center) with the other hand. Do not jerk or tug
repeatedly on the tab.
Fixed Issues
Fixed issues are reported using the following definitions.
Category Description
PR# Problem Report number that identifies the issue.

Work around Work around describes a mechanism for circumventing, avoiding, or recovering

Severity S1 — Crash: A software crash occurs in the kernel or a running process that

Upgrading the ONIE/DIAG/BIOS/CPLD Package for the S6100–ON
To upgrade the ONIE package you have installed, use one of the following two processes: zero touch
(dynamic) update and manual update.
1. Zero Touch (Dynamic) Update Process
2. Copy the upgrade ONIE installer and the DIAG installer for your system to the TFTP/HTTP server.
3. Configure a DHCP server and set option 2, Updater URL.
4. Select ONIE: Update ONIE from the ONIE boot menu. ONIE Update uses ONIE Service Discovery
to obtain the onie-updater image. The Discovery methods are used in this order:
a. passed from boot loader
b. local file system (for example, USB storage)
c. specific URL from DHCPv4
d. other URLs from DHCPv4
e. IPv6 neighbors
f. TFTP waterfall
5. Manual Update Process
The following is an example of manually updating ONIE.
Make sure onie-boot-mode is set to Update mode before proceeding to self-update.onie Boot
mode.
You can set Update mode in two ways:
• Use the onie-boot-mode —o update command.
• Select ONIE: update ONIE from the ONIE menu.
To update your existing ONIE image, boot into ONIE Update mode and run the following command.
The example uses TFTP to upgrade ONIE.
Manually upgrade ONIE using the onie-self-update command.

Installing the DIAG Tools
The DIAG tools are not part of the Diag-OS install. You must install them separately. Boot into the
DIAG-OS and, at the CLI, download the tools package (scp
<login>@<serveraddress>:<location>/dn_diags-<s6100>–DiagOS-1.10.deb).

6. If an updated version of the S6100-ON BIOS is available, upgrade the BIOS image using the
smbiostool included with diagnostic package. In this example, the BIOS is not loaded as part of the
updater package, so you must copy the BIOS image to the local directory using tftp copy or scp
copy.

Restore the DIAG-OS Main Menu
When you use the onie-uninstaller command, it removes the network OS from the target. But the
DIAG-OS partition and its content remain.
When ONIE installs the grub menu on the target, there is no DIAG-OS from network OS or DIAG-OS
option from the main menu. To restore the DIAG-ON/EDA-DIAG option on the main menu, use the
following script:
