1 Introduction
1.1 Purpose
The purpose of this manual is to inform the user how the OnyxWorks to Digitize PrismLX
operates.
The goal of the PrismLX Custom 0080 interface is to monitor the Unsupervised Printer
output from the OnyxWorks CAD system and pick out the Fire Alarms and Fire Restore
signals.
When a Fire Alarm output from the OnyxWorks is detected, the PrismLX will annunciate
the event and set up to code the appropriate Telegraphic code to the Boston Fire
Dispatch (BFD) via an existing 100Ma Telegraph loop that is routed near the PrismLX at
Northeastern University. The PrismLX will wait 60 seconds prior to automatically coding
out the Telegraphic code to BFD. The operator has the ability to prevent the activation
of the BFD code or initiate it prior to the 60 second finishing its countdown. Should the
OnyxWorks process a restore prior to the end of the 60 second countdown, the PrismLX
will abort the pending transmission. However, should the restore be processed after the
Telegraph code is initiated, only the Dispatcher can abort the coded output.
Note that the accounts and location names used in the examples are for illustration only
and do not match the user’s data.
1.2 Scope
While in most applications using the PrismLX, the PrismLX is used as the Proprietary
Alarm Monitoring System used by the dispatcher to monitor and respond to Alarm,
Trouble and Supervisory events. However, in the case of Northeastern, the function of
the PrismLX is to sort out and notify the BFD, unless canceled, of a fire event. The
PrismLX will stack up multiple Fire and or restore events and will only process the
backed-up events after the current event is either canceled or we reached the end of the
coded output. Thus, for this reason, the PrismLX, with its custom program #0080, would
not comply with the requirement to process an event within the specified NFPA time
requirement
1.3 Serial Communications
For Custom 0080 to work properly, the PrismLX must have OPTION 2 SET for CAPS II
and of course the option should be set for 0080. On power up, the PrismLX will set the
BAUD rate to 9600 8N1 to allow interfacing to the OnyxWorks.

1.4 OnyxWorks Interface
The serial data from the OnyxWorks contains a variety of signals. The PrismLX will only
act on two signals. The two signals are noted below:
This signal is for the activation of a Fire Alarm.
This signal is for the Restoral of a Fire Alarm.
The Prism LX only acts on the Description: field and the Status: field, however the
structure of the OnyxWorks string must be as noted in its entirety.

1.5 Description Field
The Description field must contain a four-digit number that represents the Telegraph Box
number to be queued up to be transmitted or aborted. If the box number only has one,
two or three digits, they must be preceded by zeroes. The box number must be followed
by the Letters FA. The FA is can be followed by up to 35 Alpha numeric characters
representing the building or address of the Fire Alarm.
There must be a space character separating the various items used to produce the proper
event. A letter ‘b’ will be used to illustrate the required space as follows:
Description:b328bFAbGAINSBOR0UG…
The total number of characters for the “Description:”location of the Fire Alarm and
Restore event can be up to 35 characters Including the “GAINSBOROUG” as noted.
GAINSBOR0UG (total of 35 Characters) 12345<CR><LF>
1.6 Status Field
The Status field must contain either the words ‘Supervisory Alarm’ or ‘Supervisory
Normal’in combination with the Description field information to produce a Fire Alarm
or Alarm Restoral.
1.7 Restoral signal
The OnyxWorks Fire Alarm signal must eventually be followed by a Restoral signal in
order to be removed from the PrismLX (and Remote Annunciator) display.

2 Event Processing
2.1 Fire Alarm Activation
When the OnyxWorks processes a Fire Alarm, as noted in Section #1 above, the
PrismLX will process a Fire Alarm and start a 60 second countdown timer as will be note
on the PrismLX color LCD display.

To ACK and send the box alarm to BFD, press the Green “SEND BFD DISPATCH”.
To ACK and abort the alarm to BFD, press the RED “ABORT BFD DISPATCH”.
Note: RED for STOP, GREEN for GO with BFD Dispatch.

2.2 Fire Alarm Restore
When the OnyxWorks processes a FA Restore, the PrismLX will respond as follows:
1. If a FA Restore occurs Prior to the Telegraph Box transmission, the Restore signal
will auto ACK the Fire Alarm Event (if not already ACKed) and abort the countdown
timer and leave the account in a restore mode waiting for the dispatcher to
ACKnowledge the Restore event.
Figure 2-4, FA Restore occurred prior to Teleg Box Transmission
2. If the Restore occurs when the PrismLX is sending the Telegraph event to the BFD,
the Box Transmission will continue, however, the status of the account will default to
Restore.
2.3 PrismLX Sounder
1. The PrismLX will activate a Sounder to annunciate a new Alarm or Restore
condition.
2. The Operator can silence this sounder by pressing the ACK or selecting to Abort or
Dispatch to the BFD.
3. When the PrismLX is Acknowledged, but the BFD Telegraph event is still pending,
the PrismLX will sound a BEEP every five seconds until the timer reaches 10

Event Processing Digitize Inc

Seconds. The PrismLX will then beep every Second to alert the Dispatcher to either
select to Abort, Send or do nothing to auto send the Telegraphic code to BFD.
2.4 Multiple Alarm or Restore Events
1. Should Northeastern experience several FA signals and or restores being processed in
a short period of time, The Prism LX will process one at a time until the backlog is
resolved.
2. The following PrismLX Thermal printout illustrates the processing of multiple Alarm
and Restore conditions occurring in a rapid succession.
Figure 2-5, Sample Thermal Printout for Multiple Events

Event Processing Digitize Inc
700300-0001 Rev. B 10/21 2-5
3. In the thermal tape noted above, here is what occurred as reported by the
OnyxWorks:
a. 13:54:40 - A Fire Alarm was reported from Gainsboroug. If no other pending
or active event exists, this event will print and start it sequence for a 60 second
delay prior to notifying BFD as noted in section 2, Event Processing.
b. 13:54:41 –A Second Fire Alarm was reported, however the PrismLX was still
processing the original Gainsboroug event (Processing means Waiting for
ACK or operator request to Abort or Send to the BFD and or the completion
of the Telegraph code to BFD). Thus, the Second FA event was noted as
PEND BOX 1234 FIRE SMITH HALL.
c. 13:54:41 –A third FA was reported for McCulloh Hall and was also noted as
PEND BOX 0008 FIRE McCulloh Hall.
d. 13:54:45 –Smith Hall reports a restore for its Fire Alarm. This event is also
sent to the holding queue for processing. Its noted as PEND RESTORE BOX
1234.
e. 13:54:40 –A minute after Gainsboroug reported a FA, and the operator did
not select to either Abort or Send the event to BFD, the PrismLX
automatically notifies the BFD as noted in the printer banner “BFD
NOTIFIED”.
f. 13:56:03 –After the Telegraph box transmit completes or is aborted, the
PrismLX processes the next pending box, which is Smith Hall.
g. 13:56:03 –Since a Pending Restore condition was also received for Smith
Hall, the PrismLX automatically Acknowledges the Alarm and processes a
restore condition, thus avoiding a Telegraph box transmission to BFD. The
Thermal printout indicates “BFD DISPATCH ABORTED BY RESTORE”.
Thus both the Alarm and Restore events are logged when it’s their turn.
h. 13:56:05 –The same ALARM and RESTORE sequence is printed for
McCulloh Hall after the previous Restore is Acknowledged.
