1 INTRODUCTION
The Metrodata NetTESTER NT10G05 is low cost, but highly featured and capable
network test and performance monitor. The NT10G05 offers the capability to test the
performance of a network up to full 10G wire speed. The 10G network port is
presented as an SFP+ module. In addition to out of service testing, the performance
of the network may be monitored for several key SLA performance metrics.
The NT10G05 offers full wire speed test capabilities supporting RFC-2544, Y.1564
and a manually configured Basic Test Mode. The NT10G05 allows for the
configuration of the expected service SLA parameters and then performs tests to
verify the performance against the SLA. A birth certificate report is produced as
evidence of the test including the key metrics of frame loss, latency and jitter.
The NT10G05 can operate as a tester at layer 2, where the destination MAC
address and VLAN is required, or alternatively at Layer 3/4 where IP/UDP test
packets are sent to a peer IP address.
In addition to the test generation capabilities the NT10G05 can also act as a simple
loopback reflector device operating at layer 2, performing a MAC SA/DA swap
function; at layer 3, additionally performing an IP address swap for packets received
with the configured protocol or finally at layer 4 where the UDP port numbers are
also swapped for a configured UDP service.
In addition to the out of service test capabilities, the NT10G05 can provide a
performance monitoring capability using TWAMP, Two Way Active Measurement
Protocol. TWAMP is a server/reflector type function and the NT10G05 can act as
either, or both, Server supporting up to 64 monitoring sessions, or reflector where all
received TWAMP packets are time stamped and reflected towards the generator.
For timestamp accuracy, hardware timestamping is performed giving a sub
microsecond accuracy.
The performance monitoring function will monitor the service between server and
reflector against a configured SLA measuring synthetic packet loss, latency and
Jitter with the statistics being stored for up to 30 days.

1.1 NetTESTER NT10G05
The NT10G05 is a compact unit as shown occupying a 1U shelf in a traditional
19inch rack. All connectors and LED status indicators are accessible from the rear
of the unit.
1.2 Safety
The NT10G05 must not be connected to cabling which would be required by BS6701
to equipped with over voltage protection. The following ports on the NT10G05 are
designated SELV (Safety Extra Low Voltage) within the scope of EN41003
Alarm Port 9 Way D-Type
Terminal Port RJ45
LAN Port(s) RJ45 10/100/1000BaseT
SFP+
These ports must only be connected to SELV ports on other equipment in
accordance with EN60950 clause 2.3
1.3 Electro Magnetic Compatibility
To ensure EMC compliance, all signal and data cables must be shielded and use
screened connector shells. The cable screens must be terminated to the screened
connector shell and not connected to any pins of the connector. Failure to use the
correct connectors may compromise EMC compliance.

1.3.1 EN55022 Statement
The NT10G05 is a Class A product. In a domestic environment, this product may
cause radio interference, in which case the user will be required to take adequate
measures.
1.3.2 FCC Declaration
This equipment has been tested and found to comply with the limits of the Class A
digital device, pursuant to Part 15 of the FCC rules. These limits are designed to
provide reasonable protection against harmful interference when the equipment is
operated in a commercial environment. This equipment generates, uses and can
radiate radio frequency energy and, if not installed and used in accordance with the
Installation and Operation manual, may cause harmful interference to the radio
communications. Operation of this equipment in a residential area is likely to cause
harmful interference in which case the user will be required to correct the
interference at his own expense.
1.4 WEEE Directive
The NT10G05 is covered by Directive 2002/96/EC (OJ:L37/24/2003) on Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE). Units must therefore not be disposed
of in standard landfill.
1.5 RoHS Compliance
The NT10G05 is compliant with the EU RoHS Directive 2002/95/EC. The RoHS
directive bans the use of six hazardous materials in products placed on the market
after July 1
st
2006. The six banned materials are Lead, Mercury, Hexavalent
Chromium, Polybrominated Biphenyls, Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and
Cadmium.
The NT10G05 is manufactured using lead free soldering processes and as such is
fully RoHS 6/6 compliant.

2 INSTALLATION
2.1 NT10G05 Rear Panel
The NT10G05 is available with either Single or Dual AC Mains or DC power options.
2.1.1 Mains Power
The NT10G05 has an internal power supply and is supplied via an IEC mains power
socket. The NT10G05 operates over the wide range 100 to 250V AC and draws less
than 30 watts.
The dual AC supply version provides resilience against power supply failure to
increase service availability with dual internal load sharing supply modules with
separate external power feeds. The dual supplies operate over the wide range 100
to 250V AC, and draw less than 35 watts combined. Power status is displayed on
rear panel LEDS, and in addition, SNMP traps may be issued to warn of failures.
2.1.2 DC Power
The NT10G05 is available with an internal, single or dual, DC power supply with two
variants available,
DC -48V (36 to 72V DC)
DC 24V (7 to 36V DC)
DC powered units have an external earth stud which must be securely connected to
an earth connection to ensure EMC compliance.

3 Quick Start
This section will give a simple introduction into how to use the NT10G05 to perform a
simple L2 RFC-2544 test on a network.
In this example, a service provider is providing a point to point, E-LINE service
between two customer sites. The customer is using the NT10G05 to verify that the
network service provided is as per the agreed SLA.
To configure the NT10G05, configure the IP address of a laptop to be on the
169.254.0.0/16 subnet, and open a web browser session to the NT10G05 default IP
address 169.254.42.42.

NT10G05 USER MANUAL
76-02-105 Rev.B Page 15 of 80
The default password is “nt10g05” (lower case). This will lead to the main setup
menu as shown:

3.1 Loopback Unit Configuration
On one site, the NT10G05 network port is connected to the carrier EDD and the unit
is configured for L2 Loopback operation. To configure the loop operating mode
select the testing menu:
Ensure the unit is configured with Tester Mode = Loopback, and Layer = L2
The configuration of the loopback unit is now complete.

3.2 Tester Unit Configuration
At the other site, the NT10G05 network port is connected to the carrier EDD.
Connect a laptop to the management port and open a browser session to the default
IP address 169.254.42.42. Enter the password, “NT10G05” and then at the main
setup menu select Settings
To ensure the test reports have the correct time and date select Unit Info and then
date and time to set.

NT10G05 USER MANUAL
76-02-105 Rev.B Page 18 of 80
Otherwise no further configuration is needed to run the 2544 test. Return to the
home page and select the Testing Menu
By default, the unit will be in loopback mode,
So change Tester Mode to Tester

NT10G05 USER MANUAL
76-02-105 Rev.B Page 19 of 80
and then change the test regime to RFC-2544.
By default, the test generator will generate untagged frames with the magic MAC as
destination address. If a particular VLAN is required then the C-VLAN option under
the Test Parameter Menu should be configured, otherwise the Test may be started
and the view report option selected to watch the test progress as shown below:

Once the test has finally completed, the full test report may be saved as a text file
using the Download Report and browser file save option.
