To use the mova properly, please read carefully this manual and each manual attached
to the battery pack etc. before and while using the mova. Should you have further

The mova N253i is your efficient partner. Please handle the mova with care so that it
can last long.
Notes on Using the mova
● DoCoMo mobile phones operate using radio waves, so phone calls cannot be made in locations where radio waves cannot be
received.You cannot use the mova in tunnels, underground areas, inside buildings, in outdoor locations where reception is poor or in
locations outside the service areas.You may also experience difficulties making phone calls from the upper floors of tall buildings,
even when there is no obvious physical obstruction.Even when reception is good (i.e.the reception level indicator shows 3 bars) and
you do not move during the call, you may still find that your call is cut off.
● When you use your mova in public places, particularly where it is crowded or quiet, be mindful of not disturbing the people around
you.
● Because the mova uses radio waves to communicate, there is always the risk of your calls being intercepted by a third party.
However, the mova is equipped with a voice scrambling function that is automatically activated for all calls.In this reason, even if a
third party succeeds in intercepting your call, only incomprehensible noise will be heard.
● The mova communicates via radio waves by converting voices into digital signals.If you move into an area where signal reception is
poor, the digital signals may not be accurately decoded and what you hear may differ slightly from what was actually said.
● It is the user’s responsibility to keep a separate record of all data (names, phone numbers, e-mail addresses, etc.) stored in the
mova.Under no circumstances shall NTT DoCoMo be held liable for any loss of or damage to the data stored in your mova.
● It is your responsibility to use SSL.Under no circumstances shall NTT DoCoMo nor certification companies mentioned below be held
liable for any damage due to the use of SSL.

Setting Tone/Display/Display Light
Character
Changing the Cartoon Characters
This feature allows you to set a selected animated character in screens such as the Stand-by screen (p.112)
and the Wake-up screen (p. 118).The selected character will also be automatically displayed while a melody
is playing or an alarm is sounding.
● The character that is automatically set for the Chat main screen is also changed (p.255).

Press m88 and select the character you want to set.
If you press T , the character will be displayed and you can check it.
After you finish the procedure, press
t to return to the Stand-by screen.
● This is set to [Winnie the Pooh] at the time of purchase.
Image window
Setting the ImageWindow
This section explains how to display the clock and the background and how to set the Display light setting.

Press m93 , select [ON] and then press o .
To turn the image window display off
Select [OFF] and then press
o .
Set the respective parameters.
[Rear fix] : Specifies whether the image window display is fixed (ON) or not (OFF).
When [ON] is selected, features such as messages during incoming calls and animations
notifying you of schedule alarms are not shown.
[Clock display] : Sets the type of clock displayed and the display mode.
The available clock type settings are [Analog 1 to 3], [Digital 1 to 3] and [OFF].When a clock
type is selected, the clock is displayed in the Image window.
[Background] : Sets [OFF],[Character], [Built-in image], [Original album] or
[Photograph] as the image window background.
The image that cannot be set is not displayed in the image list.
When this option is selected, the chosen image is displayed in the Image window. For
i-anime, the first image will appear.
Continuous images, custom animation, action view movie image, picture memo, images with
a file size lager than 30 KB cannot be set.
[Built-in image] provides a choice of 8 images for the Image window.
The title will not be displayed unless a image is stored in [Original album] or [Photograph].
[Called] : Specifies whether the caller’s number and image are displayed (ON) or not
(OFF) when the mova receives a call.
If you select [ON], you can then select [Image + phone number], [Image] or [Phone number]
as the display mode.
If the caller’s number is stored in your Phonebook, the caller’s name is displayed.The image
displayed is the image specified in [Character].

Special Features of the mova N253i
i-mode Service (paid service)
This is an online service used by i-mode-compliant mobile phones.The i-mode services include site (program)
connection, which gives users access to services provided on those sites by IPs (information service providers); i-mode
mail, which allows users to exchange e-mail messages with Internet users; and Internet connection, which
provides users with access to websites on the Internet.
● Subscription is required.
i-mode mail
You can display the Mail menu by just pressing M (Mail key).You can store up to 800 incoming messages and
200 outgoing messages on your mova.
HyperTalk with improved voice quality
HyperTalk is a DoCoMo network service that uses state-of-the-art voice processing technology to
improve the quality of voice conversations.
Full-fledged mail services
The mova supports i-mode mail (paid service) that also allows you to send and receive e-mail via
the Internet.
● i-mode is a fee-based service to which you must subscribe.
● You can also receive short mail messages as i-mode mail.
● The mova supports i-shot, which lets you send images you have shot using the mova’s built-in camera.
Access to a range of information services
Once you have subscribed to i-mode, you can access an extensive range of information provided
by the site (program) connection services and the Internet via packet data communication at
speeds up to 28.8 kbps.
● i-mode is a fee-based service to which you must subscribe.
Robust security functions -reassuring settings-
With the mova’s reassuring settings, you can prevent others from operating the mova and
displaying data stored in the mova.
● Besides the keypad lock function, which prevents others from using the phone, the Auto lock function, which
automatically locks the dial function once set, and the Remote lock function, which enables a user to lock
the dial function by calling the mova from a remote place, are available.
● With one simple operation, you can set various security functions that prevent others from viewing
Phonebook, mail messages, schedule, Received call record and other information (User security
function). Also, you can set security on mail folders and image folders to be protected (Folder
security function).

Built-in camera
A camera with 310,000 valid picture elements can take
various types of pictures, such as still images (pictures),
high-speed continuous mode (16 pictures/second) and
action view movie (5-7 seconds).
● Built-in auto correct function enables you to take a fine still
photograph easily.
● You can select a frame when looking through the
viewfinder to take a still photograph with joyful frame.
● Newly established Starting setup setting relieves you of
Size setting and Auto store setting etc.when the camera is
activated.
● You can resize the still image taken in a large size into
optimum size for i-shot (scale down or cut down), and edit
the image with functions such as Correct
backlight function and Refresh skin tone function
etc.
i-shot-compatible
Images shot using the mova’s camera can be e-mailed
to i-mode-compliant mobile phones as well as
other mobile phones and PCs (via the Internet).
Fun and convenient chat mail
functions
You can exchange mail messages just like a
conversation with your friends (a maximum of 10 users).
● Each member will be displayed with a character image in
the New message field.The facial expressions of the
character image change based on the pictograph
(,, etc.) used in the mail message, making the
chat more enjoyable.
Still images taken using the camera can also be
set instead of the character images.
Beautifully clear screen and
illumination
● The high-precision LCD screen (160 x 216 pixels)
provides clearer and brighter animations and i-mode
screens.
● You can check the time and check for incoming calls on
the image window (a color LCD screen with viewfinder
function on the back of the mova) when the mova is
folded.
● A bijou dazzling illumination is now available.When there
are missed calls, new mails or messages, the
illumination continues flashing to notify.
Entertaining cartoon animations
and characters
Disney’s“Winnie the Pooh”is a new addition.The
character appears on the screen in various images for
call and mail origination/reception and alarm.
● You can also download images and animation
from web sites.
Beautiful musical melody
● Ring tone can be selected from 10 beautiful melodies,
which are composed from a selection of 50 different types
of chords (the built-in melodies are from 64 different types
of chords) or from sound effects (10 types).
● Downloaded i-melody (20kbytes) or a recorded
voice, using the voice announce function, can
also be set for the ring tone (voice alarm).
Efficient character conversion and
easy entering text
● You can enter text efficiently with the built-in AI dictionary
and “Predictive candidates”, which displays predictions
based on characters you have entered previously for what
may follow from the entered text.Also, you can use
downloaded dictionaries which is useful for conversion of
jargon.For“Predictive candidates”,T9 input method,
which allows you to convert characters with minimum key
stroke is also available.
● You can select favorite pictographs with
pictograph history display function.
Large-font mode, Kids mode
Enlarged character mode is convenient for senior users,
and Kids mode has menus available for young users
such asTimetable (school schedule table).
As a common function for these modes,Priority
call function, which enables prompt calling to
registered phone numbers, is also available.
Infrared communication function
You can use the infrared communication function to
exchange data such as Phonebook contents,
mail and bookmarks with mobile phones or PCs
equipped with an infrared communication
function.
Supporting the infrared remote
controlfunction
The mova’s infrared remote control function
means that you can use it to control devices

Turn the mova off near high-precision
electronic equipment or devices that
use weak electronic signals.
The mova may interfere with the operation of
sensitive electronic equipment.
 Take particular care with the following
devices:
Hearing aids, implantable cardiac
pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-
defibrillators, and other electronic medical
equipment. Fire alarms, automatic doors and
other equipment controlled by electronic
signals.
If you use an implantable cardiac pacemaker
or implantable cardioverter-defibrillator or
other electronic medical equipment, contact
the respective manufacturer or vendor to
check whether the operation of the
equipment is affected by radio waves.
If you have a weak heart, you should
take extra precautions when setting
functions such as theVibrator and Ring
tone volume functions for incoming
calls.
Your heart may be adversely affected.
Never use the mova while driving a
vehicle.
Doing so may interfere with safe driving and
cause an accident. Stop your vehicle in a safe
place before using the mova.
It may also be punishable under statutes
when prohibition acts, such as use while
driving a vehicle, are done.
Moreover, even when you are using the
phone while walking, pay attention to your
surroundings and take extra care.
Do not point infrared data port toward
the eyes when sending infrared data.
It may result in damage to the eyes.Pointing
it toward other infrared devices when sending
infrared data may result in the malfunction of
or other negative impact on the device.
Turn off the mova in areas where the
use of mobile phones is prohibited,
such as in aircraft or hospitals.
The mova may interfere with the operation of
sensitive devices and electronic medical
equipment. If the mova is equipped with the
Auto power ON function, ensure that the Auto
power ON function is set to [OFF] before
turning the mova off.
Follow the instructions given by the
respective medical facility regarding the use
of mobile phones on their premises.
It may also be punishable under statutes
when prohibition acts, such as use in aircraft,
are done.
If you are wearing electronic medical
equipment on your body, do not put the
mova in your breast pocket or in the
inside pocket of your jacket.
The mova is a folding mobile phone and uses
magnets to detect that it is folded. Using the
mova in close proximity to electronic medical
equipment may cause the equipment to
malfunction.
Do not attempt to disassemble or
modify the mova, battery pack, charger
or adapters.
Doing so may cause a fire, bodily injury,
electric shock or equipment malfunction.
Do not direct the light toward the driver
of an automobile or other vehicles.
It may interfere with driver execution and

CAUTION
In some types of vehicle, use of the
mova may interfere with the operation
of the vehicle’s electronic equipment.
Use of the mova may interfere with safe
operation of the vehicle. In this case, stop
using the mova inside the vehicle.
Do not let the mova come close to, or
sandwich magnetic cards and other
magnetic recording media between the
mova.
The stored magnetic data in floppy disks,
cash cards, credit cards, and telephone
cards, etc. may be erased.
Do not switch the light on when the
mova is close to your eyes.Take care
also not to bring the light close to your
eyes or look directly into the light while
it is lit.
This could cause impaired vision or otherwise
adversely affect your eyes.
If in the event that the display or
camera lens breaks, be careful of the
broken glass.
The surface of the display and camera lens
covered by a plastic panel so as to minimize
the possibility of glass scattering. However
touching a broken display or camera lens
may result in injury.
Do not leave the camera lens exposed
to direct sunlight for a long period of
time.
Doing so may result in damage to the lens, or
a fire.
Do not fold the mova while the strap is
caught between the folding parts.
Doing so may damage the mova and cause it
to malfunction.
If you hear thunder while using the
mova outdoors, immediately turn off the
mova and take shelter in a safe
location.
There is a risk of being struck by lightning
and suffering an electric shock.
Use of the mova may cause skin
irritations such as itchiness, rashes or
eczema in some people. If this occurs,
immediately stop using the mova and
seek medical treatment.

■ Refer to the information shown on the battery pack label to check the type of battery pack you have.
If you are having difficulty fitting the
battery pack to the mova, do not use
excessive pressure to force the battery
into place. Check that the battery pack
is facing in the correct direction before
you try to attach it.
The battery pack may leak, overheat, explode
or catch fire.
Do not use or leave the battery pack in
places where it is exposed to high
temperatures, such as near a fireplace
or heating appliance.
The battery pack may leak, overheat, explode
or catch fire.
Keep the battery pack dry.
Exposing the battery pack to liquids such as
water or pet urine may cause overheating,
electric shock or malfunctions.Be careful
where and how you use the battery pack.

5.Handling Mobile Phones Near Electronic Medical Equipment
■ The following safety precautions conform to the guidelines drawn up during the Electromagnetic
Compatibility Conference, Japan, regarding the protection of electronic medical equipment from radio
waves emitted by mobile phones.
WARNING
Turn off your mobile phone in crowded
places such as rush-hour trains in case
somebody nearby is using an
implantable cardiac pacemaker or
implantable cardioverter-defibrillator.
Radio waves may affect the operation of
implantable cardiac pacemakers or
implantable cardioverter-defibrillators if used
in close proximity.
If you use an implantable cardiac
pacemaker or implantable cardioverter-
defibrillator, keep mobile phones (with an
output power of 0.8W) at a distance of at
least 22 cm, and car phone or shoulder
phones (with an output power of 2.0W)
at a distance of at least 30 cm.
Radio waves may affect the operation of
implantable cardiac pacemakers or
implantable cardioverter-defibrillators if used
in close proximity.
Observe the following in hospitals or
other medical facilities.
• Do not take your mobile phone into
operating rooms, ICUs (Intensive Care
Units) or CCUs (Coronary Care Units).
• Turn off your mobile phone inside hospital
wards.
• Turn off your mobile phone even when you
are in an area outside hospital wards,
such as a hospital lobby, since electronic
medical equipment may be in use nearby.
• Where a medical facility has specific
instructions prohibiting the carrying and
use of mobile phones, observe those
instructions strictly.
• If your mobile phone has the Auto power
ON function, disable this function before
turning your mobile phone off.
Patients receiving medical treatment
away from a hospital or medical facility
(e.g. home treatment) who are using
electronic medical equipment other than
implantable cardiac pacemakers or
implantable cardioverter-defibrillators
should consult the respective
manufacturers for information regarding
the effects of radio waves on the
equipment.
