This documentation provides installation and operational information about the Dolby DP591
audio encoder, as well as information on using the web client interface and log files.

This document details how to use the encoder with specific Dolby technologies, including
Dolby Digital Plus with joint object coding content, the Dolby codec designed to achieve an
immersive audio experience.

Speaker names used for DP591 output include height speakers.
This table lists the names of speakers that receive output, as well as their abbreviations. In

Use the DP591 to encode PCM audio and its associated metadata in Dolby technologies, and
to transcode bitstreams encoded in one Dolby technology to other Dolby technologies.

A broadcast that includes immersive audio for TV and set-top box reception incorporates the
DP591 to encode audio and object metadata from a Dolby DP590 object authoring tool into
Dolby broadcast technologies, including Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content .

2.4 DP591 rear panel components
The rear panel of the DP591 includes several types of inputs and outputs.
The DP591 rear panel components are:

The connectors on the DP591 rearpanel provide input/output capabilities for different types
of audio and video sources.

MADI in
Receives PCM signals. This input is an unbalanced 75Ωfemale BNC connector per
AES-10-2008. It can also be a clock source.
AES out
Outputs PCM audio, Dolby ED2, or Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content through
four unbalanced, 75Ωfemale BNC connectors. Signal levels per AES3-4-2009.
Video in
A 75Ωfemale BNC connector that supports video reference input, including a clock
reference (based on a voltage reference (Vref) signal).
SDI in
Receives PCM audio, Dolby ED2, and Dolby E in up to eight embedded SDI pairs. This port
also receives video and can act as a clock source.
SDI out
Outputs Dolby ED2, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content, and
PCM in up to eight embedded SDI pairs. Outputs also video.
Command port (Gigabit Ethernet)
Connects a network to administer the unit through a PC web-based user interface (UI).
2.5 Inputs and outputs
The DP591 supports metadata input through the Ethernet connection, or PCM signal through
the input SDI or MADI port.
This table lists the available inputs and outputs, and their descriptions.
Input/output name Functional description
MADI input Receives up to 16 channels of PCM audio from an in-stream console for
encoding.
SDI input Receives HD-SDI and 3G-SDI Level A video with Dolby ED2, Dolby E, or PCM.
Command port Receives metadata over IP from a Dolby DP590.
AES output Transmits encoded Dolby ED2 and Dolby Digital Plus (with Dolby Atmos
content) bitstreams.
SDI output Transmits HD-SDI video, 3G-SDI Level A video, and Dolby ED2, or Dolby
Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content bitstreams to a broadcast stream
component. When in decoding mode, transmits PCM decoded audio.
2.6 Clock source priority
Clock sources are prioritized in a pre-programmed order.
The clock reference source for DP591 is selected automatically, based on a pre-programmed
priority scheme and the availability of the particular sources. The priority is:
1. SDI
2. Vref
3. MADI
The highest available input becomes the clock source. For example, if SDI clock source is not
available, then DP591 attempts to sync with Vref, and so on.

In case the reference source becomes asynchronous with the input source, then DP591
reverts to lock onto the input
Vref signal
The Vref signal connects through the video in port. In this case the supported sync types are
CVBS, Y (luma) from Y/C and YPbPr and G (sync on green) from GBR with either bi-level or tri-
level sync, as specified in the following video standards:
•Composite Video (CVBS) and S-Video (Y/C):
•SDTV: SMPTE 170M (NTSC), ITU-R BT.470 (PAL)
•Component Video (YPbPr/GBR):
•SDTV: SMPTE 125M, SMPTE 267M, ITU-R BT.601 (480I, 576I)
•EDTV: ITU-R BT.1358 (480P, 576P)
•HDTV: SMPTE 296M (720P), SMPTE 274M (1080I/P), SMPTE RP 211 (1080PsF)
RGB formats that conform to VESA standards used for PC graphics are not supported.
Sync LED
The Sync LED gives information about the clock syncronization status:
green
for SDI: clock present
for MADI input: synced to highest priority source available
yellow
for MADI input: not synced to the highest priority source available
The same colors apply for the Clock source icon in the web UI display panel. In this case
however, the colors are accompanied by descriptions.
2.7 Specifications and requirements
Familiarity with the environmental specifications, power requirements, and dimensions of
the DP591 promote better operational success. We recommend that you review this
information prior to first use of the component.
2.7.1 Environmental specifications
These are the temperature and humidity operating ranges for the DP591 .
The Dolby DP591 audio encoder:
•Operates at temperatures between 0º and 40º C
•Supports storage at temperatures between -20º and 70º C
•Supports operation with relative noncondensing humidity levels between 20% and 80%
2.7.2 Power requirements
These are the DP591 power minimums and maximums.
The DP591 operates with a power input of between 100 and 240 V AC, 50–60 Hz, and 350 W.

3 Installation of the Dolby DP591
audio encoder
To install the DP591 perform the procedures follow these procedures in the order described
below.
•Installing the hardware
•Configuring the network settings
•Starting up or rebooting the system
•Upgrading the system software
Installing the DP591 requires performing the tasks listed below.
1. Mount the DP591 in a rack to secure it in place.
2. Follow the sequence to connect all inputs and outputs to ensure bitstream transmission.
3. Connect the network cables.
4. Start up the system.
5. Configure the network ports.
3.1 Installing the hardware
Install the DP591 using the components included with the unit, plus any other equipment
you require for your intended use. After the unit is installed, proceed to configuration and
full operation.
Procedure
1. Rack mount the DP591 in a 1-U rackspace. The DP591 measures 44 × 483 × 394 mm (1.75 ×
19 × 15.5 inches), so the rack must be at least 16 inches (400 mm) deep.
Caution: To ensure proper ventilation, do not block the front-panel ventilation area
on the top surface at the front of the machine.
2. Connect the provided power cables to the AC connectors.
3. Connect your audio and video inputs and outputs.
4. Connect an Ethernet cable from your network to the Command port.
5. To turn on the device, press the power button.
3.2 Configuring the network settings
About this task
The DP591 uses a COMMAND port network connection. The port connects to your
management network through a web browser. By default, the COMMAND port requests an IP
address from a DHCP server. To configure the port, use the front-panel navigation keys
shown in this figure.

3.2.1 Configuring the command port
The COMMAND port on the DP591 carries a gigabit Ethernet signal to connect to the
management network through a web browser. Alternatively, you can use a Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol (DHCP) connection.
Procedure
1. Press the escape key in the front panel navigation key set.
The DP591 menu is displayed.
2. Press the enter key three times to display the IP Settings menu.
Two options are displayed: Command Interface and Media Interface.
3. Press the right arrow to display the Network Mode menu for the Command Interface.
4. Press the right arrow twice to display Static or DHCP, depending on the network.
5. Press the down arrow to select Apply, and then press enter.
6. Press the down arrow to select Static IP Settings, and then press enter to activate the
corresponding field.
7. Use the arrow keys to enter a static Internet Protocol (IP) address, and then press enter.
8. Repeat steps 5 and 6 for the Netmask and Gateway, select Apply, and then press enter.
9. Press the down arrow to select Host Name, and then press enter.
The Host Name menu is displayed.
10. Press enter to activate the Host Name field.
11. Use the arrow keys to enter a host name, select Apply, and then press enter.
3.2.2 Modifying network settings
The network settings specify the DP591 command and media Internet Protocol (IP)
configurations. If you need to change the settings at any time, you can do so using the
System menu.
Procedure
1. In the System menu, select Network.
The Network screen is displayed.
2. Change the Command and Media configuration settings as necessary.
3.3 Starting up or rebooting the system
Starting up or rebooting the DP591 is a simple procedure.

About this task
Be sure the system connections are complete before starting up.
Procedure
•To start up the system, press and release the power button. The unit starts up in
approximately one minute, and when the boot process is complete, the front panel screen
displays information about the input source and mode.
•To reboot the system at any time, press the reset button on the front panel of the unit or,
in the web-based GUI, select System > Admin > Reboot, and then click Reboot.
3.4 Upgrading the system software
Installing updates (periodically provided by Dolby) is critical to maintaining full product
functionality.
About this task
Your hardware unit requires a software upgrade in case of new functionality or bug fixes.
Procedure
1. Obtain the upgrade .dlb file from Dolby Laboratories, and then copy it to your PC.
2. To open the Web UI, in your web browser, type the configured DP591 IP address.
3. Navigate to the Admin page.
4. Click Browse to locate the upgrade file on your PC.
5. Click Upload to upload the file to the DP591.
6. Click Upgrade.
7. When you see the message Upgrade Completed. Please Press Reboot., click the Reboot
button.
Caution: Do not reboot or remove power to the DP591 while upgrading.

4 DP591 operation
The DP591 enables encoding of bitstreams from SDI or MADI input into a mode available for
each type of input.
•Encoding from SDI input
•Encoding from the MADI input
•Decoding ED2 from SDI input

4.1 Encoding from SDI input
You can encode from SDI input by selecting an encoding mode and applying various settings.
4.1.1 Encoding Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content in
manual pair selection mode
You can manually select the input source to encode it into Dolby Digital Plus or Dolby Digital
Plus with Dolby Atmos content using the DD+ JOC Encode mode.
Procedure
1. On the DP591 web client, go to the Encoder Setup page.
2. From the Pair Selection Mode drop-down list, select Manual
3. Go to the Input page, under Home.
4. From the Input drop-down list, select SDI.
5. From the Encoding mode drop-down list, select DD+ JOC Encode.
6. Double-click one of the SDI pairs to highlight the content to encode.
Results
•DP591 encodes the selected SDI audio content.
•In case of PCM, it encodes all highlighted SDI pairs.
•Specifying ED2 content as input in this procedure results in encoding a Dolby Digital Plus
with Dolby Atmos content output.
•Specifying Dolby E content as input in this procedure results in encoding a Dolby Digital
Plus output.
•In case of Dolby E input, its program metadata is resembled in the Dolby Digital Plus
output. In case there are more Dolby E programs in the input, only the first one is used.

4.1.2 Encoding Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content in
automatic pair selection mode
You can set the DD+ JOC Encode mode to automatically switch between two encoding modes
based on the available input source.

Procedure
1. On the DP591 web client, go to the Encoder Setup page.
2. From the Pair Selection Mode drop-down list, select Auto
3. From the Preferred ED2 pair drop-down list, select the input channel pair with ED2
content.
4. From the Preferred Dolby E pair drop-down list, select the input channel pair with Dolby E
content.
5. From the Fallback pair drop-down list, select alternative input pair.
6. Under Home, go to the Input page.
7. From the Input drop-down list, select SDI.
8. From the Encoding mode drop-down list, select DD+ JOC Encode.
Results
•DP591 encodes the content.
•If ED2 content is not available on the preferred ED2 pair, then the encoder switches to the
preferred Dolby E pair. If Dolby E content is not available on the preferred Dolby E pair,
then the encoder switches to the fallback pair
•For ED2 source, the output is Dolby Digital Plus with Dolby Atmos content
•For Dolby E source, the output is in Dolby Digital Plus format
•The ED2 input source has priority over Dolby E in this process
•In case of Dolby E input, the program metadata is resembled in the Dolby Digital Plus
output. In case there are more Dolby E programs in the input, only the first one is used
•In case of PCM it encodes the selected pair and all the neighboring SDI pairs with PCM
audio content

4.1.3 Setting up ED2 Encode
Begin the encoding process by selecting the SDI input and a Dolby technology encoding
mode.
Procedure
1. On the DP591 web client home page, under Home, click Input.
2. From the Input drop-down list, select SDI.
3. From the Encoding mode drop-down list, select ED2 Encode.
The input source icons in the display bar turn green and the levels meter indicates the
source signal level. Below the drop-down lists, the input SDI pairs appear in groups.
4. Optional: You can click on one of the SDI pairs to display more information about the
particular content.
The ED2 Encode mode encodes all of the input channels into ED2 and you do not need to
choose an SDI pair, group, or type of content. The input source should not contain
bitstreams because they are interpreted as PCM noise by the encoder.

4.2 Encoding from the MADI input
Begin the encoding process by selecting a MADI input and a Dolby technology you want to
use for encoding.
Procedure
1. On the DP591 web client home page, under Home, click Input.
2. From the Input drop-down list, select MADI.
3. From the Encoding mode drop-down list, select the preferred encoding mode.
Results
The input source icons in the display bar turn green and the levels meter indicates the source
signal level.
4.3 Decoding ED2 from SDI input
This function in Dolby DP591 audio encoder allows you to decode ED2 into PCM including all
the audio objects carried over the production chain, unlike the Dolby DP580 reference
decoder that is usually used to decode only particular presentations created on the Dolby
DP590 object authoring tool.
Procedure
1. On the DP591 web client home page, under Home, click Input.
2. From the Input drop-down list, select SDI.
3. From the Encoding mode drop-down list, select ED2 Decode.
The input source icons in the display bar turn green and the levels meter indicates the
source signal level. Below the drop-down lists, the input SDI pairs appear in groups.
4. Select the ED2 pair you want to decode.
Results
The decoded PCM signal is output on SDI (with up to 16 channels) and AES (with up to 8
channels).
4.4 Encoder setup
You can set up additional parameters for the available encoding modes on the Encoder
Setup tab.
ED2 encoder configuration
You can use the ED2 Encoder Configuration area on the Encoder Setup tab to adjust these
parameters:
SDI Output group drop-down list
Use this option to select the SDI group on the SDI output with the encoded content.
SDI Group 1-4 Passthrough check boxes
Indicate the SDI group for pass-through (unaltered) signal with content corresponding to
the input SDI groups.
Add Personalization By Default check box
Use this option to add the personalized audio settings configured on the Dolby DP590
object authoring tool.

The ED2 Encode mode encodes all of the input channels into ED2. The input source should
not contain bitstreams because they are interpreted as noise by the encoder.
Dolby Digital Plus with joint object coding content encoder
configuration
The DD+ JOC Encoder Configuration area on the Encoder Setup tab enables you to adjust
these parameters:
Metadata Source drop-down list
This setting is available only for the MADI input. It enables you to choose the metadata
source. For Live, the source is EMDF . For Static, the source is the Dolby DP590 object
authoring tool.
PA Presentation drop-down list
Use this option to select one of the available personalized audio presentations
configured on Dolby DP590.
Bitrate drop-down list
Use this option to select one of the available bitrate values.
Dialogue normalization value (dialnorm) drop-down list
Use this option to select a dialnorm (dialnorm) in dB.
PCM Encoding Mode drop-down list
This option works only with PCM input.
•The Custom setting enables the PA Presentation drop-down list and the Dolby DP590
presentations metadata.
•The 5.1.2, 5.1.4, and 7.1.4 settings apply the input channels to the particular speaker

Pair Selection Mode drop-down list
In the Auto mode, when encoding from SDI input, the DP591 can select the input channel
pairs automatically (based on Preferred ED2 pair, Preferred Dolby E pair, and Fallback
pair drop-down list selections.)
In the Manual mode, you can select the input channels on the Input page.
Preferred ED2 pair drop-down list
Here you can select the input channel pair with the preferred ED2 content.
Preferred Dolby E pair drop-down list
Here you can select the input channel pair with the preferred Dolby E content.
Fallback pair drop-down list
Here you can select the input channel pair with the fallback content, in case the ED2 and
Dolby E content on the pairs selected above is not available.
4.5 Modifying network settings
The network settings specify the DP591 command and media IP configurations. If you need
to change the settings at any time, you can do so using the System menu.
Procedure
1. In the System menu, select Network.
The Network screen is displayed.
2. Change the Command and Media configuration settings as necessary.

5 Administrative controls
The administration page of the DP591 provides information and controls that apply to the
entire unit.
From the Admin page, you can:
•Upgrade the system software
•Reboot the unit
•Reset the system settings
•Enable and configure NTP connections
•Set the system clock
•Download the system logs
•Obtain system information
•Control advanced settings
5.1 Resetting the system settings
You can reset the DP591 to its original settings at anytime on the Admin page.
Procedure
1. From the web interface home page, under System, select Admin.
The administration page displays.
2. Scroll down to the Reset System Settings section, and then click the Reset button.
The unit reverts to its original default settings.
