QUICK START
GUIDE
Bluetooth: Getting Started
• Power on the speaker (push the power switch
forward) and confirm that the power LED indica-
tor lights up
• Ensure Bluetooth is active (Bluetooth Switch is
in the middle position) and confirm that Blue-
tooth LED is fading on and o
• Enter your phone’s Bluetooth menu (generally
accessible through the settings menu), look for
DownEastAudio-v1 in the menu and select it
• The Bluetooth LED should now be lit blue, your
Down East Audio - Penobscot is now ready to
play music
AUX Port: Getting Started
• Power on the speaker (push the power switch
forward) and confirm that the power LED indica-
tor lights up
• Ensure that the Bluetooth Switch is in the down
position, the Bluetooth LED indicator should be
completely o
• Set the Volume dial to low initially
• Plug the included Aux cord into the Aux portion
the back of the speaker
• Your Down East Audio - Penobscot is now ready
to use

1 Power Switch - lemost switch located below the power indicator
2 Power LED - located directly above the power switch
The light indicates the state of the speaker
3 Bluetooth Switch - located directly to the right of the power switch
A three position switch that controls all of the Bluetooth functionality,
see Bluetooth section for more details
4 Bluetooth LED - located directly above the Bluetooth Switch
Indicates the current state of the Bluetooth
5 Volume Dial - le most dial
Set to 50% when in the middle
6 Bass Dial - middle dial
+0 when pointed directly up
7 Treble Dial - right most dial
+0 when pointed directly up
8 Tweeters - top corners of the front
Responsible for high frequency audio reproduction
9 Woofers - right most dial
+0 when pointed directly up
10 Aux Port - located lower right of on the back of the speaker
Tuned for line level aux input, compatible with all consumer head-
phone and professional line level devices
11 Charging Port - located lower right of on the back of the speaker
Automatically disconnected from the circuitry when not being used,
IMPORTANT: use Down East Audio Charger Only

Please read this owner’s guide carefully and
save it for future reference.
WARNINGS:
• To reduce the risk of fire or electric shock, do not
expose this product to rain or moisture.
• Do not expose this apparatus to dripping or
splashing, and do not place objects filled with
liquids, such as vases, on or near the apparatus. As
with any electronic products, use care not to spill
liquids into any part of the product. Exposure to
liquids may create a failure and/or fire hazard.
• Do not place naked flame sources, such as light-
ed candles, on or near the product.
• Do not subject batteries to mechanical shock.
• In the event of a battery leaking, do not allow the
liquid to come in contact with the skin or eyes. If
contact has been made, wash the aected area
with copious amounts of water and seek medical
advice.
• Do not use any charger other than that specifical-
ly provided for use with the equipment.
• Do not leave a battery on prolonged charge when
not in use.
• Aer extended periods of storage, it may be
necessary to charge and discharge the batteries
several times to obtain maximum performance.
• Batteries give their best performance when they
are operated at normal room temperature 68°F
(20°C) ± 9°F (5°C).
• The battery provided with your system is not user
serviceable. Contact Down East Audio Customer
Service for all battery related issues.
CAUTION: Do not make unauthorized alterations
to the product; doing so may compromise safety,
regulatory compliance, system performance, and
may void the warranty.
WARNING: Contains small parts which may be a
choking hazard. Not suitable for children under
age 3.
WARNING: This product contains magnetic mate-
rial. Contact your physician if you have questions
on whether this might aect the operation of your
implantable medical device.
WARNING: This product contains high capacity
lithium ion batteries. Only charge with Down East
Audio approved charger, failure to do so could
damage the unit or cause a fire. Fuses are in-
cluded for additional protection, do not attempt
to replace any fuse, they are not designed to be
replaceable.

limits are designed to provide reasonable protec-

Bluetooth: Multiple Devices
1. All Dow Eas Audi devices can host 2 Bluetooth
devices simultaneously
2. Ensure Bluetooth is active (Bluetooth Switch is
in the middle position) and confirm that Blue-
tooth LED is fading on and o
3. Enter your phone’s Bluetooth menu (generally
accessible through the settings menu), look for
DownEastAudio-v1 in the menu and select it, if
it is the first time pairing, it may take longer to
connect
4. If DownEastAudio-v1 does not appear, click the
Bluetooth switch forward 1 time (it will spring
back like a button) repeat step 3
5. Once connected the Bluetooth LED should
now be lit blue, your Down East Audio -
Penobscot is now ready to play music
6. A maximum of 2 devices can be connected
simultaneously (click the Bluetooth switch
forward 1 time to automatically disconnect the
device which is not currently playing music
7. To play music on another device, pause the
device which is playing, then play from the
desired device
8. You can also double click the Bluetooth switch
forward to pause the currently playing device

Connecting Two Dow Eas Audi Speakers in Stereo:
• All Dow Eas Audi are capable of entering stereo
mode
• Speakers can be connected in any order, but
the one that is connected to your phone will
serve as the LEFT speaker. The directions are
written from that perspective
• The easiest and most reliable method is as
follows:
A. First, ensure that your phone is connected
to the LEFT speaker
B. On the RIGHT speaker press and hold the
Bluetooth switch forward for 5 seconds
(the LED indicator will begin flashing)
C. The speaker will auto subscribe to the
nearest available Down East Audio
speaker
D. Once the RIGHT speaker is successfully
subscribed, the Bluetooth LED will turn
green, The speaker is now subscribed to
the host Down East Audio speaker
E. The LED indicator on the LEFT will now
light up RED indicating that it is function-
ing as the le side speaker, you are ready
to play music over stereo
• When turning the RIGHT speaker on it will
automatically attempt to reconnect to stereo
mode, it is recommended that you turn on the
LEFT speaker first, then the RIGHT speaker, ac-
tivating both speakers at same time may also
work under normal conditions

Your Down East speaker is Weatherproof (not
waterproof):
• The Dow Eas Audi Penobscot features a unique
weatherproofing system allowing usage in
light rain or spray
• The speaker is not submersible and should not
be le outside for extended periods of time.
Submersion or soaking will damage the unit
and void the limited warranty
Speaker Placement:
• In many cases the listening environment will
be critical to the sound quality, while it may
not be possible to alter your listening environ-
ment, it is possible to position your speaker
which can result in drastic improvements to
the sound! Follow the guidelines keeping in
mind that dierent areas of the room will be
aected dierently, always make assessments
from the areas in the room in which you will be
listening
A. Start by placing the speaker along a wall
near a corner, playing out along the length
of the room
B. Slowly move the speaker away from the
wall, taking note of the eect on mid-bass
C. Aer finding the best position, rotate the
speaker towards the center of the room,
taking note of the eect on the sound
Tone Adjustment:
• The Dow Eas Audi Penobscot features a tone
adjustment system based on the industry stan-
dard Baxandall tone stack topology
• Depending on where you speaker is placed
and your listening environment, you may need
to adjust the bass and treble dials to optimize
your audio, a speaker placed in the middle of
the room or outside will likely need bass and
treble boost to continue to have a great sound
• At low volumes you may find the need for
more bass and treble
• At high volumes you may find the need to turn
the bass and treble down

FAQ
Q: My device won’t connect to my speaker
A: Push the Bluetooth switch forward, the
Bluetooth light should begin flashing, connect
your device via the Bluetooth menu.
Turn o the Bluetooth switch and turn it on
again, attempt to connect.
If your device has previously been connected,
unpair the device and see if it appears in
‘available devices’.
If your device still refuses to connect, push and
hold the Bluetooth switch forward for 10
seconds to reset the Bluetooth on the speaker.
LEDs will flash briefly
Q: Nothing playing when using the AUX input
A: Ensure that the Bluetooth is set to o. Push the
switch down (towards you) and ensure that the
Bluetooth light is o.
Set the volume to the middle position.
Ensure that AUX cord is plugged in well.
Use a dierent AUX cord
Q: Device won’t power on
A: Ensure that power cable is probably seated.
The speaker will only power on between -20C
and 60C, if the speaker is being used in direct
sunlight it may need to cool down
Q: Speaker powers o
A: You may need to charge the battery or turn
down the volume. The speaker has a built in
power o to protect the circuitry when the
battery drops below a certain power level
Q: Audio plays from the wrong mobile device
A: Pause or disconnect the music from the
currently playing device
Double click the Bluetooth switch forward
Power LED Indication:
Battery level: indicated by the color
Green: 75%-100%
Amber: 25%-75%
Red: 0% - 25%
Charging: so green blink every 2 seconds
Low Power warning: Indicated by three red
flashes followed by shutdown, connect charger to
resume playing
Low/High Temp warning: 5 red flashes. To pro-
tect the lithium ion battery, the speaker will not
operate above 140F or below -4F
Power o charging: slow fade to the color that
represents the charge of the battery and back,
e.g. slow fade to green: battery is nearly charged.
When battery is fully charged the fade will stop
Power LED Indication:
Fade from dark to light and back: Indicates that
the speaker is ready to pair and no devices are
paired
Solid Light Blue: Indicates that the speaker has
been connected and is ready to play
Light blue to dark blue alternating flash: In-
dicates that the speaker is attempting to pair to
another nearby Dow Eas Audi speaker
