1)Introduction
TheBExBG15EandBExBG10Ebeaconsareflameproof
beaconswhicharecertified tomeettherequirementsofthe
ATEX directive94/9/ECandtheIECExscheme.The
beaconsproducesynchronisedvisualwarningsignalsand
can be usedinhazardousareaswherepotentiallyflammable
gasanddustatmospheresmaybepresent. TheBExBG15E
hasaflashenergylevelof15 joulesandtheBExBG10Ehas
aflashenergylevelof10 joules. Thebeaconscan be used in
Zone1andZone2areaswithgasesingroupsIIA,IIBand
IICandTemperatureClassificationsofT1,T2,T3andT4.
Thebeaconscan alsobeusedinthetemperature
classificationT5,iftheupperambienttemperatureis
restrictedto+40ºC. Theunitscan be usedinZone21 and
Zone 22areasforcombustibledustsandhavean IPratingof
IP66and asurfacetemperatureofT125ºCbasedonmaxTa
of+70°C.

6) Beacon Location and Mounting
Thelocationof thebeaconsshouldbemadewithdueregard
totheareaoverwhichthewarningsignalmustbe visible.
Theyshouldonlybefixedtoservicesthatcan carrythe
weight oftheunit.
SAFETYWARNING: TheBExBG15EandBExBG10E15and
10 joulebeaconsmustbe mounted withtheirflashdomeina
positionbetweenupright and90ºasshown.
Thebeaconsshouldbesecurelyboltedtoasuitablesurface
usingthe7mm diameterboltholesinthestainless steelU
shapedmountingbracket(seefigure1).Theanglecan then
beadjustedasrequired butthemountingrestrictionsmust be
observed(seeabove). Thiscan be achieved bylooseningthe
twolarge bracketscrewsintheside oftheunit, whichallow
adjustmentinstepsof 18°.Oncompletionoftheinstallation
thetwolarge bracketadjustmentscrewsonthesideofthe
unitmustbe fullytightened toensurethattheunitcannot
moveinservice.
SAFETYWARNING: Theflashdomeguardmustnotbe
removedfromtheunitatanytime.
7) Access to theFlameproofEnclosure
Fornormaloperationitwillnotbe necessarytogainaccess
totheflameproofchamber.Theonlytimethiswill be
necessaryiswhentheunitisbeingsettoflip-flopmodeor
thefittingof an endof linemonitoringresistoronDC units.If
accessisnecessaryremovethefourM6hexagonsocket
headscrews(see figure2)andwithdrawtheflameproof
covertakingextremecarenottodamagetheflameproof
jointsintheprocess.
Notethefour M6screwsareClass A4-80 stainlesssteel
andonlyscrewsofthiscategorycanbeusedonthe
beacons. Itisthereforeimportantthatthesescrewsand their
springwashersarekept inasafeplaceduringinstallation.
Oncompletionof theoutputmode settingorthefittingof the
endof lineresistor,theflameproof jointsshouldbe inspected
toensurethattheyareclean andthattheyhavenotbeen
damaged.Alsocheckthattheearthbondingwirebetween
thetwocastingsectionsissecureandthatthe‘O’ringsealis
inplace.Whenreplacingtheterminalchambersection
casting,ensurethatitissquarewiththeflameproofchamber
castingbeforeinserting.Carefullypushthesectioninplace
allowingtimefortheairtobe expelled.Onlyafterthesection
isfullyinplaceshouldthefourM6StainlessSteelA4-80
coverboltsandtheirspringwashersbeinserted and
tightened down.If thesectionjamswhileitisbeinginserted,
carefullyremoveitandtryagain.NeverusetheM6cover
boltstoforcethecoverintoposition.
8) Access totheIncreasedSafetyTerminal
Chamber
Toconnecttheinputcablestothebeaconitisnecessaryto
removetheterminalcovertogainaccesstothetermination
chamber.ToachievethisremovethefourM4hexagon
socketheadscrews(seefigure2).ThefourM4screwsand
theirspringwashersaregradeA4stainlesssteeland they
shouldbe keptinasafeplaceduringinstallation.Before
replacingtheterminalcoverensurethattheearthbonding
wirebetweenthetwocastingsissecureandthatthe‘O’ring
sealisinplace.InsertthefourM4hexagonscrewsandtheir
springwashersandtightenthemdown.

9) PowerSupplySelection
Itisimportantthatasuitablepowersupplyisusedtorun the
beacons.Thepowersupplyselected musthavethe
necessarycapacitytoprovidetheinputcurrenttoall ofthe
beaconsconnected tothesystem.
Thefollowingtableshowsthe inputcurrenttakenbythe

Theinputcurrentwill varyaccording tothe voltageinput
level.The currentlevelsshownabovearefornominalinput
voltage.The12V,24Vand48VDC unitshaveaconverter
circuitandthereforetheinputcurrentlevelwilldecrease
slightlyastheinputvoltage inincreased andwill increase
slightlyastheinput voltage isreduced.
Theabovetablealsoshowsthe maximumvoltagesatwhich
thebeaconscan be operated.
10) CableSelection
Whenselectingthecablesizeconsiderationmustbegivento
theinputcurrentthateachunitdraws(see tableabove),the
numberofbeaconsonthelineandthelengthofthecable
runs.Thecablesizeselected musthavethenecessary
capacitytoprovide theinputcurrenttoallofthebeacons
connected totheline.
SAFETYWARNING: IftheBExBG15EandBExBG10E
beaconsareusedathighambienttemperatures,i.e.over
+40ºC,thenthecableentrytemperaturemayexceed +70ºC
andthereforesuitableheatresistingcablesmustbe used,
witharated servicetemperatureofat least 110ºC.
11) Earthing
BothACandDCbeaconunitsmustbeconnectedtoagood
qualityearth.Theunitsareprovided withinternaland
externalearthingterminalswhicharebothlocated onthe
terminalchambersectionoftheunit(see figures2and3).
Whenusingtheinternalearthterminalensurethatthe
stainless steelM4flatwasherisbetweentheincoming earth
wireandtheenclosure.
Whenusingtheexternalearthterminalacablecrimplug
mustbe used.Thecablelugshouldbe locatedbetweenthe
twoM5stainless steelflatwashers.TheM5stainlesssteel
springwashermustbe fixed betweentheouterflatwasher
andtheM5stainless steelnuttoensurethatthecablelugis
secured against looseningandtwisting.
Theinternalearthbondingwireensuresthatagoodquality
earthismaintained betweentheflameproof chambercasting
andtheflameproofcovercasting.
12) CableGlands
TheBExBG15EandBExBG10Ebeaconshavedualcable
glandentrieswhichhavean M20 x1.5entry.Onlycable
glandsapproved forEx‘e’applicationsorbetter(i.e.Ex‘d’
applications,provided theyhaveanIPratingofIP54or
better) can beused.Theymustbesuitableforthe typeof
cabletobeusedandalsomeettherequirementsoftheEx
equipmentinstallationstandards EN60079-14:2008 /
IEC60079-14:2007.
Whenonlyonecableentryisusedtheotheronemustbe
closedwithan Ex‘e’blankingplug,whichmustbe suitably
approvedfortheinstallationrequirements.
Forcombustibledustapplications,thecableentrydeviceand
blankingelementsshall be intype ofexplosionprotection
increasedsafety"e"orflameproofenclosure"d"andshall
haveanIP6XratingaccordingtoEN60529:1992.
SAFETYWARNING: If thebeaconsareusedathighambient
temperatures,i.e.over+40ºC,thenthecableentry
temperaturemayexceed +70ºCandthereforesuitableheat
resistingcableglandsmustbe used,witharated service
temperatureofat least 110ºC.
13) CableConnections
Thecableconnectionsaremadeintoan ExeII approvedsix
wayterminalblockwhichislocatedintheIncreasedSafety
Areaterminalchamber(seefigure3).Seesection8ofthis
manualforaccesstotheterminalchamber. Whenwiringinto
IncreasedSafetyAreaterminalenclosures,youareonly
permittedtoconnectonewireintoeachwayontheterminal
block.Thereforeinorderthatbeaconscan be connectedina
parallelline,theterminalblockisfitted withapproved
connectingcombssothateachelectricalconnectionhastwo
terminalsinparallel.TerminalNo’s. 1and6must not be used
oneitherACorDC units.Cableswithacross-sectionalarea
ofupto4mm²can be connected totheterminalblock. Cables
thathaveasmall cross-sectionalareashouldbe fittedwith
crimpferules.

14) SynchronisedOperation
All BExBG15EandBExBG10Ebeaconsthatareconnected
tothesamesupplylinewill haveasynchronised flashrateat
oneflasheverysecond.
15) Flip-Flop Operation
Twobeaconscan be mounted closetoeachothertoforma
flip-flopoperation,wherethebeaconswill flashalternately.
Toachievethisonebeaconmustbeset sothatthefirstflash
isdelayedby½asecond.Tosetthismodeofoperationthe
flameproofchambermustbeaccessed,(seesection7).The
unitissetbyfittingapinheadertotheflip-flopheaderpins
ontheelectronicsboard,i.e.thetwoheaderpinsareshorted
together(seefigure4),ononeofthetwobeaconsbeing
used.Thetwobeaconswill then flashalternatelyevery½a
second.
16) End ofLineMonitoring (DC Units)
OntheBExBG15EandtheBExBG10EDCbeaconunits,dc
reverselinemonitoringcan beusedifrequired.All DCunits
haveablockingdiodefittedintheirsupplyinputlines.Anend
oflinemonitoringdiode oran endoflinemonitoringresistor
can be connectedacrossthe+veand–veterminalsinthe
flameproofchamber. Notemonitoring componentsmust
notbeconnectedtotheterminalblockintheIncreased
Safetyterminalchamber. Seesection7ofthisinstruction
manualforaccesstotheflameproofenclosure.Ifan end of
lineresistorisused itmusthaveaminimumresistancevalue
of3k3ohmsandaminimumwattage of0.5wattsora
minimumresistancevalueof500 ohmsandaminimum
wattage of2watts.
