CHARTSPEED
Therateechoes scrollacross
the screen iscalledthechart
speed. It'sadjustable by first
pressing the menu key, then
pressing the key adjacent to
the"ADJUSTCHARTSPEED"
label.The chart speedmenu
appearsat the bottom of the
screen. Increase the chart
speedbypressingtherightar-
row
keyor decreaseitbypressing theleftarrow
key. Thepercentage of
chartspeed
inuse
changes as
the arrow keys are pressed.
The bar chart also gives a
graphicalindicationofthechart
speed.Youcanseethe
change
on the screen (both on the
menuand
onthechart
record)
as you press the keys. After
you'vemade theadjustment,

GRAYLINE®
GRAYLINE lets youdistinguish between strongand weakechoes.It
"paints" grayon
targets
thatarestronger
than apreset
value. Thisallows
you
totellthedifference
between ahardandsoftbottom. For
example,
a
soft,
muddyor
weedy
bottomreturnsaweaker
signalwhichis
shownwith
a narrow or no grayline.A hardbottom returnsastrongsignal which
causesawidegray line.
Ifyouhavetwosignalsofequal size, onewithgrayandtheother
without,
thenthetargetwith grayisthe stronger signal. This helps distinguish
weedsfromtreesonthebottom, orfishfromstructure.
GRAYLINE is adjustable. Since GRAYLINE shows the differencebe-
tweenstrong
andweaksignals, adjusting thesensitivity mayrequirea

FISH I.D.
TheFish I.D.featureidentifiestargets
thatmeetcertainconditionsasfish.
Themicro-computer analyses allechoes andeliminatessurface clutter,
thermoclines,
and other
signals
thatareundesirable. Inmostinstances,
remainingtargets
arefish. TheFishI.D.featuredisplayssymbols onthe
screenin
place
oftheactualfishechoes.There
arefourfish
symbol
sizes:
tiny, small, medium, andlarge. Theseareusedtodesignate
therelative
sizebetween targets. Inother
words,
itdisplays
asmall
fishsymbol
when
itthinksatarget
isasmall
fish,amediumfish
symbol
onalargertarget,
etc.
The micro-computer is sophisticated, but it can be fooled. It cannot
distinguish between fishandothersuspended
objects
suchastrotlines,
turtles,
submergedfloats,
air
bubbles,

ASP(Advanced Signal Processing)
TheASPfeatureisanoiserejection systembuilt intotheUltraIIthat
constantly
evaluates the effects of boatspeed, waterconditions, and
interference. Thisautomatic feature givesyouthebestdisplaypossible
undermostconditions.
TheASPfeature isaneffectivetoolin combating
noise. Insonar
terms,
noiseisanyundesired signal. Itiscaused by electrical andmechanical
sourcessuchas bilgepumps, engine ignition systems and wiring, air
bubbles
passing
overthefaceofthe
transducer, even vibration fromthe
engine. Inallcases, noisecanproduceunwanted marks onthe
display.
TheASPfeaturehastwolevels
-Normaland
High. Ifyouhavehigh
noise
levels,tryusingthe"High"
ASP
setting.However,
if
you
arehaving
trouble
withnoise,we
suggestthat
you
take
steps
tofindtheinterferencesource
andfixit,ratherthan continually usingtheunitwiththehigh

SENSITIVITY
ThesensitivitykeyontheUltraIIcontrols the
ability
oftheunittopick
up
echoes. Alow
sensitivity levelexcludes much ofthebottom
information,
fishsignals, andother
target
information.High sensitivity levelsenables
you
toseethis
detail,
butitcanalsoclutterthe
screenwith
many
undesired
signals. Typically, thebestsensitivity level shows a good solid bottom
signal
withGrayline
and some surfaceclutter.
WhentheUltraII isintheAutomaticmode,the
sensitivityisautomatically
adjusted
tokeep asolidbottomsignal displayed, plus alittlemore. This
gives itthe
capability
toshowfish and otherdetail.
However, situationsoccurwhereitbecomes necessary to increase or
decreasethesensitivity.
Thistypicallyhappens whenyouwishto see
more
detail,
so anincrease insensitivity is indicated. Theprocedureto
adjust
itisthesamewhethertheunitisintheautomaticormanual mode.

The sensitivity menu hasleft

Water
temperature hasanimportant-if not
controlling-influenceuponthe
activitiesofallfish. Fisharecold blooded andtheirbodiesare
always
the
temperature ofthesurrounding water. During thewinter, colder
water
slowsdowntheir metabolism. Atthistime,theyneed about afourth as
much food astheyconsume inthesummer.
Mostfishdon't
spawnunlessthe
watertemperature
iswithinrathernarrow
limits.Asurface temperature meterhelpsidentify
thedesired surface
water
spawningtemperatures forvariousspecies. Troutcan'tsurvivein
streamsthat
get
toowarm.Bass andotherfisheventuallydieoutwhen
stockedinlakesthatremaintoocold
during
thesummer. Whilesomefish
have
awidertemperaturetolerancethanothers,
eachhasacertainrange
within which ittriestostay.Schoolingfishsuspended
over
deepwaterlie
atthelevelthat
provides this
temperature.

Thetemperature of waterin the lake is seldomconstant from top to
bottom. Layersofdifferenttemperatures form,
andthe
junction
ofawarm
and cool layer
ofwateriscalled athermocline. Thedepthandthickness

withtheseasonortimeofday. Indeep
lakes
there
may
