Theimportance ofbaitfish tosuccessful

emphasized.Theyarethe principlefood ofall gamefish in mostwaters.
Baitfish arethe
planktonfeedingforagefish,suchasminnowsand
shad.Baitfish canalso bethe
youngofgamefish,suchas
crappies,
bluegill,
and bass.
Mostbaitfishareconcentratedwithinfivefeet ofthesurfacewhere
sunlightpromotes
thegrowth ofthe
plankton
onwhich
they
feed.One
methodof
fishingistousetheZ-5000tofindthebaitfish first.Aschool
ofbaitfish will looklikea"cloud" onthe
Z-5000's display.

Schoolingfish suspended

Thetemperature ofwaterin thelakeisseldomconstantfrom top to
bottom. Layers ofdifferent
temperatures
form,andthe junctionofawarm
andcool layerofwateriscalled athemiocline.
Thedepthand thickness
ofthethermocline canvarywiththeseasonortimeofday.
Indeeplakes
theremaybetwo ormoreatdifferentdepths. Thermoclines
are important
tofishermen because
they
areareaswherefish are active. Many
times
baitfishwillbeabovethethermoclinewhile largergame
fishwill
suspend
in orjustbelowit.
TheZ-5000 candetectthisinvisiblelayerinthe
water,
butthe
sensitivity
willprobably havetobeturneduptoseeit.
INTRODUCTION
WhentheZ-5000LiquidCrystalGraph(LCG) isturnedon, itwill
automatically
findanddisplaythebottomsignalandothertargets.
Asthe
depthofthebottom changes,
theZ-5000willautomaticallychange the
rangeandsensitivity
toalwayskeepthebottomsignalonthedisplay.
If
desired,
the
onlykey
thatneedstobetouched istheON key. However,
theautomaticmodecanbedisabledwhichallowstheZ-5000tobe
manuallyadjusted.
TheZ-5000 isnitrogen filled and sealedforcomplete
waterproof
protection.
Theliquidcrystaldisplayand keyboardarebacklightedfor
easyuseatnight,plusifscovered by
afull oneyearwarrantywhich
includes allpartsandlaborforoneyearfrom thedateofpurchase.
Togetstartedwith
your
Z-5000,firstread the installation
section.This
iswhereitallbegins, and improperinstallationcancauseproblems
downtheroad.After
you've readthese instructionsand installed your

clearancewhentiltedforthebestviewingangle.Holesinthebracket
baseallow wood screworthrough boltmounting. Thebracketcanbe
attachedtoaluminum

suggestplacing

piece
ofplywoodonthebackofthin
fiberglasspanels
tosecurethe
mountinghardware.

Power Connections
TheZ-5000 operates
froma12voltbatterysystem. The
power cablecan
beattachedtoanaccessoryorpowerbuss,
butifyou have
problems
withelectricalinterference
(randomdotsorlinesthatshowwheneverthe
boat'sengineoranaccessoryison),then attachthecable directly
to
the
battery.
Thepowercable
hastwo wires,redisthe
positivelead andblack is
negative
orground. Anin-line fuse holder containing
a3amp fuseis
suppliedwith the
Z-5000.This attachestothered wire onthepower
cablewiththecrimpconnector.Theother endofthefuse
holder
attachestothe
battery
oraccessorybuss.Ifthe cable isnot
longenough,
spliceordinary#18
gaugewireonto it.Becertainthatthe fuseholderis
asclosetothe
powersource (battery
oraccessorybuss)
as
possible.
This
protectsthe powercable andyour
Z-5000in theevent
ofashort.
TheZ-5000 isprotectedfromaccidentalpolarityreversalsandwill notbe
harmedifthewiresare reversed.
(However, theunitwillnot workuntilthe
correct
polarityisapplied.)
SURFACECLUTTER
Themarkings atthe
topofthescreenrepresent
thesurfaceofthe
water
Theycanextendmany
feetbelowthe
surfacewhichcaninterfere
with
fish signalsorother
targets. Thesemarkings
are called"surface
clutter" and arecausedbyalgae,plankton, bait
fish,andairbubbles
createdbyboatwakesorwaveaction.

Remember,theremustbesomemovement
betweentheboatandthe
fishtodevelop
thearch.Usually thismeanstrollingatveryslowspeeds
withthe
mainenginein gear ataminimumthrottlesetting.
Thedepthofthewaterwillaffectthesize andshapeofthefish arch
duetothe coneanglediameter. Forexample,
ifthe cone passes
overa
fish inshallowwater,
the
signaldisplayedontheZ-5000 maynot arch at
all,duetothe narrowconediameter
andtheresolutionlimitationsofthe
display.
Even the20degreetransducerhasonlya3foot diameterat
this depth.
Compared
toa
papergraph,
anZ-5000cannotshowasfineofdetail
becausethe
pixels(dotsonthescreen)
aremuch larger
than apaper
graph'smarkings.
Therefore,
theZ-5000cannot showfish archesaswell
asa
graph,
and itrequires
abitmoreworkinitially
toreadand interpret
thescreenthana
papergraph.
Very
smallfish probably
will notarchatall,whilemedium
sizedfishwill
showa
partialarch,ora
shapesimilartoanarch ifthey'rein deepwater
Large
fishwillarch,but
thesensitivity needstobeturnedupin deeper
watertoseethearch.Becauseofwater conditions,
suchasheavy
surfaceclutter, thermoclines, etc.,
the
sensitivity
sometimes
cannotbe
turnedhighenough
toget fisharches.
Oneofthe bestwaystoget
fish arches istoexpandor"zoom"a
segment ofthe
water,
forexample
30to60feetThesmallerthe
segment,
thebetterthescreenresolution
willbe. Then, turnupthesensitivity as
highas possible
withoutgettingtoomuchnoise onthescreen.
In
medium todeepwater, thismethodshouldworktodisplayfish arches.
TRANSDUCER

Pleasereadthe
instructions
carefully
before
you startinstalling
thetransducer.
NOISE
Electricalnoisepickedupby
thepowercablecanbeminimized by
routingitawayfromotherpossible sourcesofelectrical interference.
One
ofthelargestnoise
generatorsistheengine'swiring harness
thatruns
fromtheengine tothe instrument
panel.Thisharnessusuallycontainsa
wireforthetachometerwhichradiatesRF(radiofrequency)energy.
For
bestresults, keep
the
powerand transducercablesawayfromthe
engine
wiring.Also,bilgepumpwiring cansometimesradiatenoisesotryto
keep
theZ-5000's cables
awayfrom
thosewires.
VHFradioantennacablesradiateRFenergy
athigherpower levels
than eventhe
engine's
wiring harness.
Itisvery important tokeep the
Z-5000's powerandtransducercables asfar away
aspossiblefroma
VHFradioantennacable.
Ifthere isnonoise—interference—on
theunitwhen the boatissifting
• stillwiththe
enginerunning
in neutral,
butinterference
beginsatslow
boatspeeds,worsening
astheboatspeedincreases,
then aprobable
cause isacousticnoise, orcavitation.
Thisnoise isnot
electrical,but
• rathermechanically
inducednoisefromthetransducer.
Usually, acoustic
noiseiscreated
by
airbubblespassingovertheface ofthetransducer.
Thefasteraboattravels, the more airbubblesincreaseand generate
noiseonthe
display.
Toeliminate
thisproblem,readthetransducer
owner'smanualforpropermountingtechniques.

Installingthe Batteries
TheZ-5000 portablerequirestwo six-voltlantern
batteries.Toinstall
them,
turnthe battery boxupsidedown and releasethe
two latcheson
the
frontofthecompartment.Open itand slidethetwobatteriesintothe
casewith the
springterminalsagainstthe
battery
board.
(Note:the
battery
board mayneedtobeplaced in itsslotbefore
installing
the
batteries.)
The
battery
board isspecially
designed
toassureproper
contactwith the
terminals,
regardlessoftheir position. Closethe
compartment
lidandlatchthecase.Plugthe powercableintotheback
ofthesonarunitandturniton. TheZ-5000shouldbeginworking.Ifit
isn'tcheckthebatteriesforpropervoltage.
Mostofthe complaints
receivedabout portableunitsresultfrom usingstalebatteries.Allcarbon
batterieshavealimitedshelflife.Besurethebatteries
youbuyarefresh
stock.Alwaysremove
themfromthe compartment
before
storingtheunit
asdeadones canleakand corrode the
platingonthe battery
board.

Individualfish can,attimes, bedistinguished
by
a
characteristicarch
thatseparates themfromtheir
stationary
surroundings.
Thereasonfor

movedintothecenterofthe cone,
thedistancetoitwill beshorter,"B",

Ifa
partialarch occursmostofthe timeonyour unit(themarkcurves
up, butnot

down,orvice-versa)itcouldbethe transducerisnot
pointed
straightdown.Ifthetransducerismountedonthetransom,
adjustituntil
thefish show the distinctivearch.Thismaytakesometrial
anderroruntilthecorrect
mountingisachieved.

The20degreetransducerisalmostalways thebesttousein fresh
water, whilethe8degree
transducerisusedmostlyin saltwater.Ina
deepwaterenvironment, (300
feet—freshwater,100 feet—salt
water)the
narrowconeangleismoredesireablebecauseitcanpenetrate
tomuch
deeperdepthssincethesoundenergyisconcentratedin asmallerarea.
Both8degreeand 20degreetransducersgiveaccuratebottom
readings, eventhough
thebottomsignalismuchwideronthe20degree
modelbecause
youareseeingmoreofthebottom.
Remember,the
shallow
edgeofthe signalshowsyou
thetruedepth. Therestofthe
signaltellsyouwhetheryouare overrocks,mud,etc.
Transducers onsaltwaterboatsneedtobepainted with a
thincoat of
anti-foulant
painttopreventorganisms
fromgrowing. Ifunchecked,
barnacles
and othermarinegrowthwillcauseadecreaseinthe
transducer's
sensitivity.Donotuseametalbasedanti-foulant paintasit
will decrease
thetransducer'ssenstivity. Therearespecialanti-foulant
paints
specificallydesigned
fortransducers.
They'rereadily
available
at
mostmarine
dealers.
SIGNALINTERPRETATION
Because
yourZ-5000 isboth extremely
sensitiveand powerful,
itcan
giveyouanaccuratepictureofthe kind ofbottomoverwhich
your
boat
ispassing. Abottomoffirm sand,gravel,shell,orhard clay returnsa
fairlywidesignal. Iftheautomatic sensitivity
isturnedoff, andthe
signal
narrows
down,
then itmeansthatyouhavemovedoveramudbottom
becausemudabsorbsthesoundwaveand returns
aweaksignal. Turn
upthesensitivity. If you havetheautomatic senstivity
turned on,watch the
sensitivity barAstheboatpasses
overthemudbottom,
theZ-5000will
automatically
increasethe
sensitivity
tomaintaina
goodbottomsignal.
The
sensitivity
bar will helpyouin determiningifthe bottom
issoftor
hard.Ifitincreaseswhilein the samedepthofwater,thentheboathas
moved over asoftbottom. Ifit decreases, thenitisovera
hardbottom.Of
course,
asthewaterdepth increasesordecreases,
thesensitivity will
alsochange.
PortableTransducer
Theportable transducerisattachedtothetransomoftheboatby
meansofasuctioncup. Thetransducershouldbemountedonanarea
ofthetransomthatisfreefrom bubbleswhilethe boatisrunning. Thisis
important
becauseairbubblescause cavitationnoisewhich isdisplayed
ontheZ-5000asrandomdots.
Assemblethetransducerasshown in Figure 3.Makecertaintotieone
endofthe cord provided withthetransducertotheboatand theother
endtothe transducerbracketThis willprevent
thelossofthetransducer
shoulditcome off.
Clean
thechosenareaofthetransombeforesetting thesuction cup.
Oncethe
positionhasbeendetermined,
moistenthesuction cupand
attachitas
firmlyas possible.
Thesuction cup shouldbemountedjust
abovethebottom
edgeofthe
hull,whichallowsthetransducertobein
thewater atall times.
Bigrocksorstumps
onasmoothbottomsend backsignalsabovethe
bottomlevel
signal.
Theheightofthe
signaldepends
onthe
target's
height. Ifyouwatchas youapproach apost oratreestump, itwillbe
clearly
visibleasashort lineextending abovethebottomsignal. Figure3

Thesoundwavesfrom
thetransducerspreadoutintothewaterin a
cone
shapedbeam, much likethe beamfromaflashlight. Theangle
betweentheoutsideedgesofthe cone iscalledtheconeangle.
Eagle
offersachoiceoftransducerswith either an8or20degree
cone
angle
thatwillinterchangewith anyofthe192 kHz sonarproducts.
Inother
words,
anyEaglesonarinstrumentcanbeusedwith anyEagle
transducerofthesame
frequencywith nolossofperformance. However,
theuseofanyothermanufacturers'
transducerwillresultin aloss
ofperformance.
Generally, widecone angletransducers(20
degrees)
are ideally suited
foroperating
in shallowtomediumwaterdepths.
The20degreecone
angleallows
you
toseemore oftheunderwater
world.In15 feetofwater
the20degreecone coversan areaaboutsixfeet across. The8degree
transducercovers
onlyaboutatwofootcircle.
ZOOM The

digitalbottom
depthdisplay.
After
theunithasfoundthebottom, thedepth willbe
displayed.
WhentheZ-5000is
firstturned on,theautomaticmodeison. To
switch itintothe manual
mode,presstheAUTOkey
whichislocated
abovetheON key.Theword
AUTOatthetopofthe
displaywillbe
erased,
autosensitivity and autoranging willbothbecancelled,plusthe
digitaldisplaywillbeturnedoffandyou willhavecomplete
manual
controloftheZ-5000.TheZ-5000 canbereturnedtotheautomatic
modeatanytimebysimplypressing
theAUTO keyagain.

maximum
lowerlimittheZ-5000candisplayis400feetthe actual depth
that

However, theZ-5000won't
acceptanentryifalowerlimitisselectedthat
