Exposure to extremely high noise levels may cause permanent hearing
loss. Individuals vary considerably in susceptibility to noise-induced
hearing loss, but nearly everyone will lose some hearing if exposed to
sufficiently intense noise for a period of time. The U.S. Government’s
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has specified
the permissible noise level exposures shown in the following chart.
According to OSHA, any exposure in excess of these permissible limits
could result in some hearing loss. To ensure against potentially danger-
ous exposure to high sound pressure levels, it is recommended that all
persons exposed to equipment capable of producing high sound pres-
sure levels use hearing protectors while the equipment is in operation.
Ear plugs or protectors in the ear canals or over the ears must be worn
when operating the equipment in order to prevent permanent hearing
loss if exposure is in excess of the limits set forth here.

DIGITAL LIVE CONSOLE
UMX.96

EAW UMX.96 Owner’s Manual Introduction
1-1
Chapter 1: Introduction
The EAW UMX.96 digital mixing console re-denes performance benchmarks, oering more power, control
and integration than any digital live console on the market today.
In fact, with its open-ended architecture and next-generation processing, the UMX.96 is nothing less than
an integrated live sound control system, providing end-to-end control of the signal chain - from microphone
inputs to the onboard DSP processing for a zone, array, or even a specic loudspeaker.
The UMX.96 oers 24-bit, 96-kHz performance with expandable on-board 56 x 44 analog I/O, 3 x 12 inte-
grated loudspeaker processing, and the rst full integration of the EAW Smaart® measurement and analysis
platform.
The ergonomics of the UMX.96 are designed specically for ease of use in live sound environments, high-
lighted by a unique master section that combines a 15-inch touch-sensitive LCD display with a dynamically
tactile rotary encoder that is able to change its“feel” depending on the specic parameter selected via the
touch screen. A PC can also be connected to expand the user interface. The master section also incorporates
eight touch-sensitive Penny + Giles VCA faders that bring the VCAs or desired channels to the center of the
mixer for convenient access.
The channel section of the UMX.96 also includes 48 Penny + Giles touch-sensitive faders arranged in stacked
rows of 24. These faders provide dedicated control of all 48 input channels simultaneously or can be as-
signed to other inputs and outputs as needed. This results in less bank switching, enhancing the user’s expe-
rience. Finally, tri-color Channel Assign buttons and V-Pots provide at-a-glance indication of current channel
assign functions for Mute Groups, VCAs, Aux/Groups, internal eects, and more.
The onboard 3 x 12 system processor oers custom EAW-designed EQ, crossover, delay, and limiter algo-
rithms allowing multi-way loudspeaker alignment, audio distribution, and zoning directly from the mixer.
Further, recallable presets allow you to save and recall crossover, EQ, and alignment settings. The powerful
internal memory provides virtually unlimited snapshot/venue/preset storage.
The onboard Smaart measurement capabilities provide instant system measurement and calibration. When
selected, an input or output feeds Smaart, which in turn provides RTA on the EQ screen to show the instant
eect of the EQ on the signal. Additionally, Smaart is fed by a dedicated measurement mic input and an
onboard LCD SPL meter provides constant dB-SPL display.
The standard UMX.96 conguration includes 48 remote-controlled mic preamps with snapshot recall of
level, polarity, pad and 48-volt settings. Each mic input also includes balanced TRS send and return inserts
plus a TRS direct output. Eight stereo line inputs are on dual XLR connectors, while the 24 output buses can
be congured as an Aux Send with variable level or as a Group.
The onboard 16 x 8 Matrix Mixer allows digital patching of any input or output signal into the matrix making
it extremely exible. Finally, the system processor outputs are typically fed by the Left, Right and Center out-
puts, but any output signal can be routed directly to the system processor for zone or array processing.
The modular channel design of the UMX.96 means easy eld servicing, if necessary. The console comes with
an external power supply with redundant capability, and the dedicated UMX.96 eld service personnel are
always just a phone call away.

EAW UMX.96 Owner’s Manual Introduction
1-2
1.1 About This Manual
This manual is designed to be accessible, with subsections as complete as practical to minimize having to
leaf back and forth looking for the whole story. You shouldn’t have to read the entire manual to gure out
how to use this console. You’re welcome to do that, if that’s your style, but it isn’t necessary. On the other
hand, a certain amount of familiarity with analog mixing consoles, their features, and commonly used signal
processing (compressors, limiters, gates, EQs) is assumed.
This manual is designed to give you the following resources:
• A general overview of the console’s facilities and features.
• Section-by-section description of each knob, button, fader, input, and output.
• Detailed description of each screen on the touchscreen interface.
• Two dierent index methods. One is visual, using drawings of the console, with callouts to the manual
sections that describe those items. The other is more traditional, but with an emphasis on concepts in-
stead of word occurrence.
We recommend that you:
1. Scan the table of contents.
2. Locate the visual index.
3. Read sections 1 and 2 in their entirety.
4. Read the Quick-Start Guide.
5. Start using the console.
6. Refer to the rest of the manual as needed.
1.2 Terminology and Conventions
The following terms and conventions are used throughout this manual.
• Console controls are represented in bold type using their exact spelling and capitalization (e.g., press the
SELECT button).
• Items located on the touchscreen are bold and italicized (e.g., touch the EDIT button).
• Touchscreen and console areas are represented by capital letters in plain type (e.g., press the PAN button
in the PREAMP portion of the CHANNEL ASSIGN area). Furthermore, items located on the touchscreen are
italicized.
• Scribble strip displays are represented by medium bold letters (e.g., The bottom line of the scribble strip
displays the word Delay).
• Connections made to/from the console are represented by capital letters in bold type using their exact
spelling (e.g., the insert SEND jack is half-normalled…).
• Boldface is only used when the item described is the object of the discussion. For example: Press the 48V
button to apply phantom power to the input. Most microphones are tolerant of 48V phantom power.
• “Press”and “adjust” pertain to buttons or controls on the surface of the console. You press a button and
you adjust a control.
• “Enable”applies to switches/buttons that toggle between two values.“Enable the 48V phantom power”
means “if the button isn’t lit, press the button so it is lit.”
• “Disable”pertains to switches/buttons that toggle between two values.“Disable the 48V phantom power”
means,“if the button is lit, then press the button so that it is not lit.”
• The greater-than or right arrow symbol (>) serves as the separator character in a button or menu path. For
example, Setup>Naming takes you to the channel Naming tab in the Setup screen. On the touchscreen,
you touch the Setup button and then the Naming tab.

EAW UMX.96 Owner’s Manual Introduction
1-3
The large knob in the central mix area is referred to as the “Intelligent Encoder.” The Intelligent Encoder’s
tactile feel changes according to its usage. It can have a smooth feel, a detented (click-stepped) feel, it may
resist movement or it may spin freely, it may have rotational limits or it may have none. You adjust the Intel-
ligent Encoder.
The Touchscreen is a new interface to many audio engineers that requires some new terminology.
• “Touch” describes making a selection on the Touchscreen by touching the item (e.g., Touch the EQ but-
ton). Touch can also mean the same as “Enable”since the touchscreen also has virtual buttons on its
surface.
• “Touch and Spin” pertains to items In the touchscreen area of the console. You touch the item and adjust
it using the Intelligent Encoder.
1.3 Notes, Cautions, Warnings, Examples
A note is just that, a note to you, an aside, some helpful information.
Note: There is a hole at the right-hand side of the touchscreen where you can store the stylus for easy acces-
sibility during use. Remember to store it for transport before closing the console’s road case.
Caution is used for information that, if not heeded, may result in damage to the equipment.
Caution: Many musical instrument devices can’t tolerate phantom power fed to their outputs. It is prudent
to not apply phantom power to one of these devices unless you know for sure that it is phantom power
tolerant.
Warning is used for information that, if not heeded, may create a dangerous situation for the operator or
other personnel.
Warning: Do not oat the ground on any equipment in your sound system. It is a safety hazard to do so.
An Example provides specic instructions on how to perform a certain task.
Example: The console is in Aux Mode, and Aux Channel Assign button 11 has been pressed. The fader banks
now control the levels for aux send 11.
In addition, there are some features that have not yet been implemented, but will be in future releases.
Some of these features are described in this manual, and are indicated with a NYI symbol.
NYI
These features do not work in the current release. When they are implemented, new pages (and possibly
new descriptions) will be issued to replace the existing pages in your manual.

2.2 Hardware Overview
All of the inputs and outputs are built into the console frame. In fact looking at the rear of the UMX.96, one
could easily confuse it for an analog desk.
All of the audio is processed in a central core made up of a backplane with multiple cards that handle rout-
ing of audio, DSP (Digital Signal Processing), I/O delay, mixing, and eects. Signals comes from the Inputs,
are converted to digital on one of four codec cards (one for each input panel on the rear plus one more for
the stereo inputs) and then sent to the core. After all the processing is done in the core, it is routed to all of
the appropriate outputs via 4 more codec cards.
Control is handled by the core as well. Each control surface panel connects to the core and sends/receives
communication to/from it. The connections are independent so if one of these panels fails, the rest continue
to function.
Finally, there is the computer. It is just another independent controller connected to the core like each control
surface panel. It manages the touchscreen, Intelligent Encoder, and Smaart. It is important to note that the com-
puter does nothing audio-related here except for receiving a stereo signal from the core for Smaart analysis.
The external redundant power supply delivers 48V at 16.5 A. 48V power is distributed through the console
by four power distribution boards isolating the control and the audio. Each of these boards creates the nec-
essary voltage rails required for their subsections.
The console returns to its previous state after a power cycle and relays on all XLR outputs prevent any audio
spikes on power up. After turning on power, the console will be passing audio and allowing full control by
the control surface in less than 5 seconds. The computer boots after approximately 20 more seconds.
2.3 Signal Path
The UMX.96 has the basic signal path of an analog VCA console with switchable LCR or LR/Mono main
outputs. There are 48 built-in digitally controlled mic preamps with an analog insert point between the mic
preamp and the channel analog-to-digital converter (ADC).
After the ADC, the input signal is processed by the channel DSP, which includes digital trim, high- and low-
pass ltering, delay, gate/expansion, compression/limiting, EQ, level, and pan control. There are also digital
inserts pre and post the channel DSP.
Each input channel also has its own direct output which can be fed by the input signal before the channel
DSP (which is post the analog inserts) or after the channel DSP (which is post the digital inserts). Thus, the
direct output is always prefader.
