QuickStartEssentials
FirstthingsfirstGettoknowyourbattery
Thismightseemastrangeplacetostart,butyourbatteryisthesinglemost
expensivecomponentofyourconversionkit.Thebatterythatcomeswithyourkitusesvery
advancedlithiumionchemistry.Insidethespeciallydesignedcasingareelectroniccomponents
thatworktoprolongandoptimisethelifeofyourbattery.Lithiumionbatterieshaveenhanced
lifetimes,conservativelyestimatedtobeapproximately1000cycles.However,themustbe
maintainedwellbytheirowner.Atnopointshouldyouattempttoopenthesealedcase.Ifin
doubt,contactyourserviceagent.Didwesaynottoopenthecaseunderanycircumstances,
butreturnittoyourserviceagentifyouthinkit’snotworkingproperly.Awesome,letusmoveon

Howtogiveyourbatteryecolove.
1. Aimtonevertodepleteyourbatteryandaimtokeepitaschargedaspossibleatall
times.Loveyourbatteryanditwillgiveyouyearsofservice.
2. Fullychargeyourbatteryaftereveryride.Yourbatteryshouldbefullychargedwithin
afewhours.Aredlightonthechargerindicateditis‘oncharge’,agreenlightonthe
chargerindicatesitis‘fullycharged’.
3. Neverleavethechargerturnedononcethebatteryhasfullycharged.Removethe
batterychargingconnectorattherearanddisconnectthechargerfromthemainssupply
atthesocket.Alwaysmakesurethechargerhasadequateventilationandawayfromany
heatsensitivesurface.Allelectricalchargersgenerateheat,somakesureit’swellaway
fromanimals,children,water,mogwai,dragonsandotherthingsthatheateffects.
4. Alwaysturnoffthepowerswitch.Whenthebikeisnotinuseorbeingrecharged.Not
turningofftheswitchwillmeanasmallamountofcurrentwillberunningthroughthe
controllerandotherpartsofthesystem,andthiswilldrainthebattery.
5. Donotleavetheswitchon.Despitethebattery’sabilitytomanagepowerforyou,itwill
drainthebattery(see4).Whenturnedoffthebatterywillholdgoodcharge.
6. Youshouldchargethebatteryfullyeverytwomonthsevenifyouarenotusing
thebikeatall.LithiumIonbatteriesdonotlikebeingleftforlongerperiods.THIS
ISTHESINGLEMOSTIMPORTANTREASONFORLOSSOFBATTERY
PERFORMANCEANDLIFE.Yourbatterywarrantymaybeinvalidshouldyounot
followthisadvice.
7. Batteryrecharging:Standardchargerswillfullychargethebatteryinapproximately5
hoursfromdeadflat.Thebatterychargerwillindicateafullchargebyturningfrom‘red’to
‘green’.Inaddition,thebatterychargecanbetestedbypressingthe‘test’buttononthe

case.Fullgreenlightsmeansafullchargeandoneornolightsmeanslowornocharge.
Batterycorrectlyfittedtothecasing.Itshouldbeflushand‘clicks’intoplacewithasmallpush.When
fitted,LOCKitintoplaceandremovethekey.Pullonthebatteryusingthefindergripsontheundersideto
ensureitisfittedcorrectlybeforeriding.Tounlock,insertandturnthekey.Holdthekeyinthatposition
andgentlypullthebatteryout.Youcanchargethebatteryeitherwhenmountedasshown,orremoved.

BatteryManagementSystem(BMS)andBikeController

Insidethebatteryareessentialelectroniccomponentswhichinteractwiththecontrollerand
managethebatteryitself.Yourbatteryisafactorysealedunitandmustnotbealtered,openedor
otherwisetamperedwith.
●Thebatteryslidesinandoutofthemountingcase,usingaclicklockandphysicalkey
locktoholditinplace.
●TheBMSishousedinsidethebattery(youcan’tseeit).Thebikecontrollerishousedat
therearofthemountingdock,locatedunderyoursaddleandyouwillseethewiringloom
runningintoit.Itisinsidethecaseyoucan’tseeit.
Thesetwopartsareessentialtothebikesystem.(seepreviousphoto).Theyhavebeentobe
waterresistant.However,takecarenottoimmerseeitherunitinwater.Generallyspeaking
peopleareusedtonotputtingbatteriesinwater,soitshouldn’tcomeasasurprisethatwhile
youreBikecangetcaughtintherain,youshouldavoidhosingforacleanitdownwithbatteryin
place(andespeciallyturnedon)oraimingthehoseinsidethebatterymounting.Tocleanthe
batteryandmountingcassettewerecommendtheusealintfreeclothandverysmallamountof
lukewarmwaterontheclothtowipedown.Donotuseanyformofchemicalcleaningagentor
waterdirectlyonthebatteryormounting.

TheBatteryManagementSystem(BMS)
Thissmallpieceofelectronicsismountedinsidethebatterycase.Atnotimeshouldyouattempt
toopenthebatterycase.ThejoboftheBMSistobalancethechargebetweenthecells(there
are12cellsina36vbattery)andpreventthebatteryfromexcessivedischarging.Unlikemany
electronicgadgets,theBMSisdesignedtolookafterthebattery,soasyourideitwon’tfeellike
thebikeisslowingorlosingpower.Whatwillhappenisthatbatterywillcutoffandyouwilllose
power.VeryrarelyaBMSandcontrollermaycutpowertoprotectthesystem.Thisismostlikely
becauseofthrottleabuse!.TheE90isdesignedtofeedpowertothesystemusingasortof
shortrampingupofpowerratherthanasharpoffandon.WhenyouturnthethrottleontheE90,
you’llnoticeforashortmomentthatthewheelrampsuppower.ThisistoassisttheBMSand
controllerinoptimisingperformance,andtofeedpowertothemotortopreventsuddenspikesin
powerorjerkingtheriderforward.

GeneralAdvice:Youmustbeovertheageof14torideanelectricbikeinmoststates.Bikes
mustnotberiddenatspeedsabove25km/hwiththemotorengagedonanypublicroador
cycleway.Youdonotneedtoregisterthebike(aswithamotorbikeorcar).Youdonotneeda
licencetorideandelectricbike.Youdoneedcommonsenseandanawarenessofotherroad
users.
YOURFIRSTRIDE
PressuparrowuntilONEassistbarappears.Thisisthelowestpowersetting.Readyyourselfto
ride,checkyoursurroundingsfortrafficorotherhazards.Pedalyourbike.Afterhalfaturn,the
motorwillcutinandstarttoassistyou.ItwillkeepassistingyouuntilyoueitherSTOPusingthe
pedalsorusethebreak.
Trythis,rideforabouttenseconds,thenstoppedalingandcoast.Youwillnoticethemotorcuts
out.Pedalagainandpowerreturns.Congratulations,youareridinganelectricbike!

TherearethreewaystoridetheE90
1. ridebypedalpoweralone,i.e.fullyhumanpowered.
2. ridebyelectricmotoralonebyoperatingthethrottlemanually.
3. rideusingbothtogetheratthesametime.
Unpoweredriding
YoucanridetheE90withoutactivatingtheelectricalsystem,orhavingthebatteryinstalled.Fully
humanpowered(normal)ridingwillnotdamagethemotororbike.Goforit.
Poweredriding
Step1Turnonthebattery
BATTERYON/OFFSWITCH
Installthebatterybyslidingitintothecassettecasing.Itonlyfitsoneway.Pushitintoplace
firmlyandwill‘click’intoplace.Usingthekeylock,turnthekey.Thislocksthebatteryintoplace.
Youmaynowremovethekeyforsecurity.Thereisarockerswitchattherearsideofthe
battery,pressitandaredlightwillilluminatetoshowthebatteryisoperational.Youcantestthe
battery’schargebypressingthetestbuttononthetopofthebattery.Fullgreenlightsindicatea
fullbattery

Step2Turnonthedisplay
TURNINGONTHEDISPLAY.
TheLCDDisplayislocatedonthehandlebar.ThiscontrolsallthefunctionalityoftheE90
system.Pressthebuttonbetweentheupanddownarrowkeys.Holditdownfor2secondsand
you’llseealltheLCDindicatorsturntoblackbriefly,followedbysomenumbers(whichare
preprogrammedtotellthebikewhatsizewheelyouhaveandpowersettingstousefor
Australia).Thisonlytakesacoupleofseconds.Thedisplaywillthenshowyouinformationabout
thesystemthespeed,distancetravelled,batteryoutput,batterychargeandmodeofriding.

Step3Setthemodeofoperation
Youcaneitherridein“auto”or“pedalassist”modes.Therearesixlevelsofassist,fromlow
(economytohighboost).
SettingtoAuto(Throttlemode)
SHOWSAUTOMODEONTHEDISPLAY
TheLCDhasasmalliconwhichshows“AUTO”.PresstheDOWNarrowonthedisplayuntilthe
six‘pedalassist’barsdisappearandAUTOisdisplayed.ThisputsthebikeinTHROTTLE
MODE.BECAREFUL.Themotorisactivatedusingthetwistgripthrottleonthehandlebar.The
moreitisturned,themorepowerissenttothemotor.
WARNING:Ifyouturnthethrottlewiththewheelontheground,thebikemaylurchforward.Ifyou
wishtotestthemotorisworking,LIFTTHEFRONTWHEELBEFORETURNINGTHE
THROTTLE.ALWAYSUSETHEBRAKETOSTOPTHEWHEELBEFOREPUTTINGONTHE
GROUND.LOOKAROUNDTOMAKESUREITSSAFETOTEST.

Auto(THROTTLE)Mode
UsingtheThrottle&Pedalingwithyourfeet.
Manypeopleridethisway.Formuchofthetime,theyridewithnoelectricpower.Whenthey
encounteraninclineorwanttopullawayfromajunction,theysimplyturnthethrottletogivethe
biketheaddedpowertheyneedandusuallykeeppedaling.Werecommendthatyoupedalas
wellasusethethrottleformaximumperformanceatalltimes,buttherearetimeswhereablipof
thethrottleisallyouneed.
ThrottleOnly(NoPedal)
AneBikeisnotamotorbike,butitwillfunctionperfectlywellusingjustthethrottle.Withnot
peddling,turnthethrottletoaddpower.Youshouldnotrideatspeedsgreaterthan25km/hand
beveryawareofotherroadusersandpedestrians.Themotormakessomenoise,aswe
believehavinganquiet,butaudiblemotor,isimportanttolettheriderknowitisengaged.
However,thissoundprobablywon’tbeheardbyotherroadusers,asitislessthantheambient
noisefromapubliclocation(birds,roadnoise,people,windandsoon).
Youwilldrainthebatteryfasterifyoudon’tassistit.Typicallyyouwillgetbetween10and20kms
ifyouusethrottleonly.Asthemotorislimitedincapacity(andlessthanUSandEuropean
motors)avoidusingthrottleonlyonsteepclimbs.Dependingontheweightoftheriderandwhat
youarecarrying,itmightnotpullyouupthehill,andwillslowdownasthatisphysicsatwork.
Ondownhillsections,don’tapplythethrottle!Werecommend2022km/hisarespectableand
safespeedtorideanelectricbike,butobviouslyanybikecanachievefarhigherspeeds
downhill.

PedalAssistMode

TheE90hasbeendesigned(andfactoryprogrammed)toletyouridesafelyandconsistentlyat
speedsof1822km/h.TheE90uses“variablepedalassisttechnology”toachievethis.Behind
thepedal,onthecrankisasensorwhichmonitorsifyouarepedallingornot.
Tosetthebiketopedalassist,usetheuparrowinthedisplaybypressingitoncetomoveitout
of‘auto’.Youwillseeadarkgreybarappearnexttowherethe‘auto’symbolwas.Pedalassistis
nowbeset.Toturnbackto‘auto’pressthedownarrowuntilthe‘auto’symbolappears.
Onebaristhelowestpowersetting.Itisperfectlyfunctionalandmoreexperiencedridersfindit
perfectforflatriding,addingminimalassistonoccasionalinclinesorheadwinds.Themotoris
oftennotbeingused,orifitis,thepowerusageisminimalatthissetting.Twoorthreebarswill
seethemotoroperationalmostofthetime.MostE90ridersfindthismorethanadequatetoride
40+kmsatanaveragespeedof1820km/h.Itwillincreasepowerwhenitencountersahilland
decreaseitfortheflat.Thereare6powersettings,themaximumisindicatedbythe“hi”symbol
andallbarsilluminated.
ThemoreyouassistthebikeusingpedalsandGEARS!thelessworkthemotorhastodoand
thefurtheryouwillbeabletotravel.Gearsareperhapsoneofthemostoverlookedaspectsof
ridingespeciallyforinexperiencedadultswhommighthaveneverownedabikewithmorethan
3gearsintheirchildhood.Werecommendaminimumof3gears(typicallyabeachcruiser)and
formostroadusersa21speedbikeforcommuting.Ownershavesoldustheyregularlysee
4070kmsfromtheE90,yeteachbikeandridercanbeverydifferent.Werecommendsome

practicewithusinggears,changingupanddowntoavoid‘lugging’themotorandfindingyour
ownpersonal‘sweetspot’forriding.

UsingtheLEFThalfofthepoweron/offbuttononthedisplay,taponceandthebacklightwill
comeontogetherwithasymbol.
Settingthetripmeter.

pressdownarrowtoreset.
Settingthetimer.
UsingtheLEFThalfofthepoweron/offbuttononthedisplay,tapthreetimestoseethetimer.

Servicing
Werecommendthatyoumaintainyourinvestmentwell,usingaqualitybikemechanic.TheE90
isdesignedtobereliableandtroublefree,withminimalservicing.Wespecificallydesignedthe
E90tobeplugandplay.Infact,webelievetheE90systemistheleastdemandingsetofparts
onyourbike.WehaveoutlinedbatterycareasthemostessentialpartofmaintainingyourE90,
howeverwerecommendthatyoucheckuponyourbikeeverythreemonthsor500kms.
TheBatteryandPannierRackInformation
Therearetwoconfigurations.
BatteryCassetteOnlyMount
Batteryonlymountingusesastemwhichismountedontheseatpost.Itisheldinplacebyfour
boltstoclampitaroundtheseatpost.Ensurethisclampisfirmlyattached.ItisNOTDESIGNED
TOCARRYANYWEIGHT.Wedesigneditforpeoplewhodidn’twanttocarrybagsorusea
rack.Thebatterycassetteslidesontothestemandisfixedinplace.Thebatteryitself,slidesinto
thecassetteasdescribedelsewhere.DONOTSITONTHECASSETTE,YOUMAYDAMAGE
thebatteryandthemounting.

RackMountedbattery
Moretraditional,thismounthasarmswhichattachtostandardpanniermounts.Thebatteryis
heldundertheracktoprotectitfromparceldamageandalsoforthosecommuting,thebatteryis
hiddenfromviewbythepanniers.Thisisadjustableatfourpointstherearaxleandunderthe
seatpost.Inaddition,weprovideabungeecordtoholdLIGHTITEMSinplace.IFYOUARE
INTENDINGTOCARRYMORETHAN20KILOS,WERECOMMENDPURCHASINGAHEAVY
DUTYRACKFROMUS.

Thepowerchargerwillrechargein46hours(seebatterymaintenanceformoredetails).

Thefronthubmotorisasealedunit.Anyattempttoopenthecasingwillinvalidatethewarranty.

TheDisplay
Thedisplayisessentialtooperatingthebike.Itisasealedunit.Anyattempttoopenthedisplay

preconfiguredbythetechnicianwhoinstalledthekit(ifrequired)andhasbeenpreprogrammed
atthetimeofmanufacture.Donotattempttoreprogramitviathedisplaybybuttonmashing.

Troubleshooting
Ithappens!Don’tpanic.Unlikeamotorbikeyoucanstillpeddlehome,butthereareafew
commonthingsthatstopabikeworking,andmostofthemareeasydiagnosedandsolvedina
fewminutes.
Nothingshappening!
First,andforgiveusforthisasitsoundsreallyobvious...checkthebattery.

1. Checkthebatteryisinthecase.Yep,thebikewon’tworkifthebatteryisn’tinthe
mountingcase.
2. Gotthebattery?Ace,pressgentlyontheedgewiththerockerswitchandthecharge
indicatorstomakesurethebatteryisclickedintoplace.Ifyou’renotsure,pullitoutwitha
gentletugandrefit.Ifitwon’tbudge,tryturningthekeylockthatweputtheretostopthe
batterybeingremoved.
3. Gotpower?Pressthebatterychargetestonthebattery.It’stherowoflightsontheback.
Theywillilluminate.Themoregreenlights,themorecharge,oneredornothingandyou’ll
needtochargethebattery.(seeHowtoloveyourbatteryabove)
4. Batteryon?There’sarockerswichontheside,nearthosechargelights.Ifyouwantthe
biketouseelectricpower,you’llneedtopressitdownandaredlightwillcomeon.Of
courseyoucanstillridethebikewithoutthepoweratall,justleavetheswitchoff.
Themotorcutoutanditwon’tgo!
Ifthemotorcutsoutfollowtheseprocedures
Checkingtoseeifyouranoutofcharge.
1. Checkthebatteryisturnedonusingtherockerswitchattheback.Itwilllightupredwhen
itison.
2. Presstheonbatterybuttontotestthecharge.Themoregreenlights,themorecharge
yourhave.
3. Ifyouhavenoorlowcharge,turnoffthebatteryandrechargeit.
4. Ifyouhavegreenlightsturnoffthebatteryfor30secondsandturnbackon.Leavefor
another30secondstoallowtheBMStoattempttorebalancethebattery.Ifyouhaveone
lightleftonthebatteryindicatorDONOTusethethrottleorpeddleassisttoavoid
completelydepletingthebattery
5. IfyouhavegreenlightsonthebatteryANDaredlightonthebatteryrockerswitch(it’son
andithassomecharge)thenremovethebatteryfromthemounting(unlockandunclick)
andreinsert.
Checkingthefordisconnectedpedalsensororthrottle.
Themostcommonproblemwith‘itwon’tgo’besideshavingadepletedbatteryaredisconnected
throttleand/orpedalsensors.WedesignedtheE90sothatthekitcanberemoved.Thismeans
theconnectionsinthewiringloomaredesignedtobepluggedtogetherorpulledaparttoallow
ownerstorefitthekitontootherbikesinthefuture.Thisisakeyadvantageofakitbikeoveran
integratedbikeyouarefreetomovethepowersystemtoliterallythousandsofbikes.
Solet’sgetintoit.First,checkthebatteryischargedandinstalledinthemounting(seeabove).
Turnthebatteryonetocheck,thenturnitoffagain.Nowwecancheckthecables.

PedalAssistSensor
Thebiggestproblemsarethedisplaybeingsetto‘auto’orbecausetheleadbetweenthesensor
itselfandthecontrollerontherearofthebatterycasehavebecomedisconnected.
AnoteaboutusingHeatShrinkoncableconnections.
Werecommendthatyourinstallerusesheatshrinkoverallthecableconnectionsatthe
timeofinstallation.Thisistofirstlyreducetheriskofcablesbecomingdisconnected
accidentally,andsecondlytoaddadditionalprotectionfromaccidentaltugging,waterand
soon.Someownersprefertodothis,somedon’t.Thisshouldbedonebyyourservice
agentasheatshrinkrequiresheattobeappliedtoitwhenbeinginstalled.Overheating
cancausedamagetotheconnection.Ifyoususpectyourcablesareheatshrunkand
disconnected,pleasecontactyourserviceagentforadvice.
Checkingthepedalassistsensorconnection
Step1LocatethePedalSensor!
Thisistheroundthingthatisbetweenyourcrankandthepedal.Havealookoneachside,
dependingonthebike,it’sfittedononesideortheother.Nowlookfortheleadthatcomesoffit
andfollowituptowardsthesaddle.Itissupposedtoconnectaleadwhichcomesouttheback
ofthebatterycase.TheE90wiringloomissimple,thereisonlyoneleadthatsizethatwillfit
together.(seediagram)Makesurethatit’sconnectedproperly,butdon’tbenditortugonit,it’s
designedtofiteasilytogether.Lookatbothendsoftheleads(seediagram).TheyonlyfitONE
WAY,locatethetwoendandgentlypushtogether.
Testthesensor.Turnonthebattery.Holddownthepoweronbuttononthedisplay(see
diagram)untilthedisplayilluminates.Setthemodeto‘peddleassist’bypressingtheblueup
arrowuntilpowerbarsappearandautoisturnedoff.Nowgetonyourbikeandpeddle.The
motorshouldnowkickin.
Step2Checkingthethrottleconnection!
Themostcommonproblemswiththethrottleare.
Notsettingthedisplaymodetoautoand/oradisconnectedthrottlecable.
Checkthemode!
Locatethethrottleonthehandlebar.It’sthetwistythingnexttothehandgrip.Turnonthebattery.
Turnonthedisplaybypressingtheonbuttonuntilthedisplayilluminates.Checkthebikemode

issetto“AUTO”onthedisplaybypressingthebluedownarrowuntilthe“AUTO”icondisplays.
Liftthefrontwheeloffthegroundwithcare,turnthethrottleslowlyby10degreeorsotoseeif
themotorengagesandthewheelturnsfreely.DONOTTWISTFORFULLTHROTTLEtoavoid
asurprisedfaceandpotentialrunawaybike.Whenthemotorengages,lowerreleasethe
throttlegently,dabthefrontbraketostopthewheelbeforereturningtotheground.
Checktheconnection!
Ifnothinghappens,followtheleadfromthethrottletowardsthebatteryunit.Onthehandlebars,
therearethreewires.Oneforeachbrakeleverandthethirdisforthethrottle.Again,these
thingsonlyfitoneway,solocatethewire(seediagram),locatethetwoconnectionendsand
