PERSONAL CONDITION AND SAFETY EQUIPMENT
WARNING DANGER
Trimmer/Brush Cutter users risk injury to themselves and others if the trimmer/brush cutter is used improperly
or safety precautions are not followed. Proper clothing and safety gear must be worn when operating a
trimmer.
EXTENDED OPERATION/EXTREME CONDITIONS
Vibration and Cold
It is believed that a condition called Raynaud’s Phenomenon, which
affects the fingers of certain individuals may be brought about by
exposure to vibration and cold. Exposure to vibration and cold may
cause tingling and burning sensations followed by loss of color and
numbness in the fingers. The following precautions are strongly
recommendedbecausethe minimum exposurewhichmighttrigger the
ailmentisunknown.
• Keep your body warm, especially the head, neck, feet, ankles,
hands and wrists.
• Maintain good blood circulation by performing vigorous arm
exercises during frequent work breaks and also by not smoking.
• Limit the hours of operation. Try to fill each day with jobs where
operating the trimmer or other hand-held power equipment is not
required.
• If you experience discomfort, redness and swelling of the fingers
followed by whitening and loss of feeling, consult your physician
before further exposing yourself to cold and vibration.
Physical Condition
Your judgment and physical dexterity may not be good:
• if you are tired or sick,
• ifyouaretakingmedication,
• if you have taken alcohol or drugs.
Operate unit only if you are physically and mentally well.
Eye Protection
Wear eye protection that meets ANSI Z87.1 or CE
requirements whenever you operate the trimmer.
Hand Protection
Wear no-slip, heavy duty work gloves to improve your
grip on the Trimmer/Brush Cutter handles. Gloves also
reduce the transmission of machine vibration to your
hands.
Hearing Protection
ECHOrecommendswearinghearingprotectionwhenever

Proper Clothing
Wear snug fitting, durable clothing;
• Pants should have long legs, shirts with long sleeves.
• DONOTWEARSHORTS,
• DONOTWEARTIES,SCARVES,JEWELRY.
Wear sturdy work shoes with non-skid soles;
• DONOTWEAROPENTOEDSHOES,
• DONOTOPERATEUNITBAREFOOTED.

Repetitive Stress Injuries
It is believed that overusing the muscles and tendons of the fingers,
hands, arms, and shoulders may cause soreness, swelling, numbness,
weakness, and extreme pain in those areas. Certain repetitive hand
activities may put you at a high risk for developing a Repetitive Stress
Injury(RSI).AnextremeRSIconditionisCarpalTunnelSyndrome
(CTS), which could occur when your wrist swells and squeezes a vital
nerve that runs through the area. Some believe that prolonged exposure
to vibration may contribute to CTS. CTS can cause severe pain for
months or even years.
To reduce the risk of RSI/CTS, do the following:
• Avoid using your wrist in a bent, extended or twisted position.
Instead try to maintain a straight wrist position. Also, when grasping,
use your whole hand, not just the thumb and index finger.
• Take periodic breaks to minimize repetition and rest your hands.
• Reduce the speed and force with which you do the repetitive
movement.
• Do exercises to strengthen the hand and arm muscles.
• Immediately stop using all power equipment and consult a doctor if
you feel tingling, numbness, or pain, in the fingers, hands, wrists, or
arms. The sooner RSI/CTS is diagnosed, the more likely permanent
nerve and muscle damage can be prevented.
EQUIPMENT

Use only ECHO-approved attachments. Serious injury may result from the use of a non-approved attachment
combination. ECHO, INC. will not be responsible for the failure of cutting devices, attachments, or accessories
which have not been tested and approved by ECHO. Read and comply with all safety instructions listed in this
manual and safety manual.
• Check unit for loose/missing nuts, bolts and screws. Tighten and/or
replace as needed.
• Inspect fuel lines, tank, and area around carburetor for fuel leaks. DO
NOT operate unit if leaks are found.
• Inspect shield for damage, and ensure that the cut-off knife is
securely in place. Replace if either is damaged or missing.
• Check that the cutting attachment is firmly attached and in safe
operating condition.
• Check that front loop handle and shoulder strap/ or shoulder/
waist harness are adjusted for safe, comfortable operation. See
Assembly Section for proper adjustment.
• Keep exhaust area clear of flammable debris. Avoid contact during
andimmediatelyafteroperation.

Do not operate this product indoors or in inadequately ventilated
areas. Engine exhaust contains poisonous emissions and can cause
serious injury or death.
Provide Safety Instructions To All Operators
• Provide all operators of this equipment with the Operator's Manual
and Safety Manual for instructions on safe operation.
Keep A Firm Grip
• Hold the front and rear handles using both hands, with thumbs and
fingers encircling the handles
Keep A Solid Stance
• Maintain footing and balance at all times. Do not stand on slippery,
uneven or unstable surfaces. Do not work in odd positions or on
ladders. Do not over reach.

The 300 hour emission durability period is the time span selected by the manufacturer certifying the engine emissions
output meets applicable emissions regulations, provided that approved maintenance procedures are followed as listed
in the Maintenance Section of this manual.

8. CUT-OFFKNIFE- Automatically trimslineto the correctlength(5in.) afterheadistapped on thegroundwhile nylon
cutting attachment is turning. If trimmer is operated without a cut-off knife, the line will become too long, the engine
will overheat and engine damage may occur.
9. PLASTICDEBRISSHIELDASSEMBLY- Deflectsdebris. MUSTbeinstalledonunitbeforeNylonLineHeaduse
(See Assembly Instructions). Shield assembly includes the Cut-Off Knife and Safety Decal. Mounts on the Gear
Housing Assembly just above the cutting attachment. Helps protect the operator by deflecting debris produced
during the trimming operation. This shield must be replaced with the steel shield for blade use.
10. THROTTLETRIGGER- Controlsenginespeed. Springloadedtoreturntoidlewhenreleased. Duringacceleration,
press trigger gradually for best operating technique.
11. BLADES - Circular steel blades for grass, weeds, or brush cutting applications. (Harness, metal shield, and U-handle
required for blade operation.)
12. METALBLADESHIELD-Requiredwhenunitisequipped withblades. Donotoperateunitwithoutshield.
13. SHOULDER HARNESS - An adjustable shoulder strap that suspends the unit from the operator's shoulder. Using
the strap reduces operator fatigue and enhances safety.
14. CHOKE - Adjusts Fuel/Air ratio for starting or running engine. The choke control is located at the top of the air filter
case. Move choke lever to "Cold Start" ( ) to close choke for cold starting. Move choke lever to "Run" ( )
position to open choke.
15. SPARKPLUG-Providessparktoignitefuelmixture.
16. TOPGUARD-Protectsoperator's arm from the hotengineduringnormal operation.
17. SPARKARRESTOR-CATALYTICMUFFLER/MUFFLER-Themufflerorcatalyticmufflercontrolsexhaustnoise
and emission. The spark arrestor screen prevents hot, glowing particles of carbon from leaving the muffler. Keep
exhaustareaclearofflammabledebris.
18. FUELTANK-Holdsfuelandcontainsthefuelfilter.
19. RECOILSTARTERHANDLE-Startsengine. Pullhandleslowlyuntilstarterengages,thenquicklyandfirmly.
When engine starts, return handle slowly. DO NOT let handle snap back or damage to unit will occur.
20. FUELTANKCAP-Coversandsealsfueltankopening.
21. PRIMERBULB- Primes carburetorforquickstarting. Pumping primerbulbbefore startingenginedrawsfresh fuel
from the fuel tank, priming the carburetor for starting. Pump primer bulb until fuel is visible and flows freely in the
clear fuel tank return line. Pump bulb an additional 4 or 5 times.

ASSEMBLY
DRIVE SHAFT/POWER HEAD
Tools Required: 4 mm Hex Wrench
Parts Required: Power Head, Drive Shaft Assembly
1. Stand power head upright on a level surface.
2. Loosen the two (2) drive shaft clamp bolts at engine drive shaft
clamp, and remove center drive shaft location bolt (A).
3. Carefully fit driveshaft assembly to engine making sure that
inner drive shaft engages into clutch mount.
4. Turn drive shaft housing until locating hole lines up with location
hole in clamp and install center drive shaft location bolt (A).
NOTE
Gear housing must be aligned properly with engine. Aligning
center locating hole in driveshaft housing with center drive shaft
bolt (A) provides correct alignment.
5. Tighten two (2) drive shaft clamp bolts (B) securely.
PLASTICSHIELD INSTALLATION
(Nylon line operation)
Tools Required: Screwdriver,LockingTool
Parts Required: Plastic Debris Shield, Shield Plate,
three(3) 5x16mmscrews.
WARNING DANGER
The plastic shield is for use with the Nylon Line Head only. Install
Metal Shield when using plastic or metal blades, or serious injury
mayresult.
1. Align hole in upper plate (D) with notch in gear housing (G), and
insert locking tool to prevent splined shaft from turning. Arrow on
gear housing flange points to notch location.
2. Remove cotterpin(A), L.H.bladenut (B),lowerplate (C),and
upper plate (D) from PTO shaft. Turn blade nut clockwise to
remove.
3. Remove locking tool. Retain lower plate, blade nut, and cotter pin
for future use with blade conversions.
4. Align plastic debris shield (F) with the drive shaft, and install on
the bottom of the gear housing flange.
5. Place shield plate (E) on shield, align holes and install three (3)
screws.
6. Replace upper plate (D) on PTO shaft.

NYLON HEAD INSTALLATION
Tools Required: LockingTool,17x19mmScrench
Parts Required: NylonLineHead.
1. Make sure plastic debris shield (F) is properly aligned, and upper
plate (D) is installed on splined PTO shaft.
2. Align hole in upper plate (D) with notch in gear housing (G), and
insert locking tool (H) to prevent splined shaft from turning.
3. Thread line head (I) onto PTO shaft by turning it counter-clockwise
until head is tight against upper plate (D).
4. Removelockingtool.
NOTE
Model SRM-340 includes necessary blade conversion parts.
Blades are not provided with trimmer/brushcutters and must be
selected for type of cutting being performed. See page 16,
"Choosing The Correct Blade."
Install Metal Shield
Tools Required: 8x10mmOpen-endWrench,Screwdriver,Scrench,
Locking Tool

1. If installed, remove nylon line head, upper plate and plastic shield,
and set upper plate aside for use with blade installation. Retain
plastic shield, shield plate, and plastic shield hardware for conver-
sion back to nylon line operation.
2. Align hole in upper plate (D) with notch in gear housing (G), and
insert locking tool to prevent splined shaft from turning. Arrow on
gear housing flange points to notch location.
3. Remove splitpin(A),L.H. blade nut(B),lowerplate (C), and upper
plate (D) from PTO shaft. Turn blade nut clockwise to remove.
4. Removelockingtool.
5. Loosely attach bracket (J) to shield (K) and attach shield to bottom
of gear housing (G) with hardware provided.
6. Tighten all shield hardware.

Install Blade
Tools Required: Locking Tool, Scrench.
Parts Required: Upper Plate w/ 20 mm pilot, Lower Plate, 10 mm Nut
w/L.H. threads, 2 x 25 mm Cotter Pin, Blade.
1. Install upper plate (D) on splined PTO shaft, pilot side down.
BladeinstallationrequiresUpperPlate(D)with20mmpilot.
2. Install Blade (L) on upper plate pilot. Blades must be installed so
that rotation arrow on blade matches rotation of unit: teeth toward
direction of rotation (See debris shield decal). Secure blade with
LowerPlate(C),and10mmL.H.nut(B).Turnnutcounter-clockwise
on PTO shaft to tighten.
3. Align hole in upper plate with notch in gear housing, and insert
Locking Tool (H) to prevent splined shaft from turning. Arrow on
gear housing points to notch. Tighten 10 mm nut securely.
4. Insert Split Pin (A) in hole in PTO shaft, and bend pin legs around
shaft counterclockwise to retain 10 mm nut.
IMPORTANT
Never reuse a cotter pin - install a new cotter pin each time a blade is
installed or replaced.
5. Tri-CutBlade(M)isinstalledwithGlideCup(N).
6. Removelockingtool.

THROTTLE LINKAGE AND IGNITION LEADS

1. Unscrew air filter cover knob and remove cover.
2. Place inner throttle cable in slot of carburetor swivel (B).
3. Loosen nut (A) and place threaded end of throttle linkage on
carburetor. Finger tighten nut (A).
4. Check throttle for freedom of movement and that wide open
throttle / low idle extremes are adjusted properly. If adjustment
cannot be achieved with adjusting nuts, consult with your Echo
Dealer for correct adjustment procedure.
5. Tighten nut (A). Connect 2 ignition leads from throttle cable tubing
to 2 ignition leads (C) on engine. Gather ignition wires and
position behind air filter case.
6. Install airfilterand cover.

BALANCE AND ADJUST UNIT
1. Loosen harness clamp screw.
2. Put on harness and attach unit to harness.
3. Slide harness clamp up (A) or down until unit balances with head
approximately50-75mm(2-3in.)fromtheground.
4. Tighten harness clamp screw.
5. Loosen upper U-Handle clamp screws (B), and position U-Handle
forcomfortableoperation.
6. Tighten U-Handle clampscrewsand8mm clamp bolt securely.

Choosing the Correct Blade
WARNING DANGER
The type of Blade used MUST be matched to the type and size of material cut. An improper or dull blade can cause
serious personal injury. Blades MUST be sharp. Dull blades increase the chance of kickout and injury to yourself

Harness is required for blade operation, and is recommended for ALL

The Shoulder/Waist Harness suspends the trimmer from the operator's
shoulder, and reduces operator fatigue during nylon line trimming or
cutting with a blade.
Operator safety is also enhanced by restricting trimmer movement and
preventing blade or line contact with the operator's hands and feet
during operation.
NOTE
In case of Emergency, the trimmer/brushcutter can be released from
the the harness by pulling up on the quick-release collar.

• DO NOT store a unit with fuel in its tank.
Leaks can occur. Return unused fuel to an
approved fuel storage container.
Storage
Fuel storage laws vary by locality. Contact
your local government for the laws affecting
your area. As a precaution, store fuel in an
approved, air tight container. Store in a well
ventilated, unoccupied building, away from
sparks and flames. Do not store fuel longer
than 30 days.

days, ninety (90) days when a fuel

Mixing Instructions
1. Fill an approved fuel container with half of the required amount of
gasoline.
2. Add the proper amount of 2-stroke oil to gasoline.
3. Close container and shake to mix oil with gasoline.
4. Addremaininggasolineandremix.
5. Install fuel container cap and wipe any spilled fuel from container
and surrounding area.
Handling Fuel

OPERATION
STARTING COLD ENGINE
WARNING DANGER
The cutting attachment should not rotate at idle. If attachment
rotates, readjust carburetor according to "Carburetor Adjustment"
instructions in this manual or see your ECHO Dealer, otherwise
serious personal injury may result.
1. Stop Switch
Move stop switch button (A) forward, away from the STOP
position.
2. Choke Lever
Move choke lever (B) to Cold Start ( ) Position.
3. Primer Bulb
Pumpprimerbulb(C) until fuel is visibleandflowsfreelyin the
clear fuel tank return line. Pump bulb an additional 4 or 5 times.
4. Recoil Starter
Lay the trimmer on a flat, clear area and pull the recoil starter handle
(D)untilenginefires(5pullsmaximum).
5. Choke Lever
After engine fires, move choke lever to Run ( ) position and pull
recoil starter handle/rope (D) until engine starts and runs. Allow
unit to warm up at idle for several minutes.
NOTE
If engine does not start with choke in “Run” position after 5 pulls,
repeat instructions 4 and 5.
6. Throttle Trigger
After engine warm-up, gradually depress throttle trigger to increase
engine RPM to operating speed.

STARTING WARM ENGINE
