General Provisions
The abovewarrantiesare effective provided the waterconditionerisoperated at
waterpressuresnotexceeding 125 psi,andatwatertemperaturesnotexceeding
120°F;providedfurtherthat the waterconditionerisnotsubjectto abuse,misuse,
alteration,neglect, freezing,accidentornegligence;and provided furtherthatthe
waterconditionerisnotdamagedasthe resultofanyunusualforceofnaturesuch
as,butnotlimitedto, flood,hurricane,tornado orearthquake.EcoWaterSystems,
Inc., isexcused iffailureto performitswarrantyobligationsistheresultofstrikes,
governmentregulation,materials shortages,orothercircumstancesbeyond its
control.
To obtainwarranty service,noticemustbe given,withinthirty(30)days of thedis-
coveryof the defect, toyourlocalEcoWaterSystemsdealer.

SAFETYGUIDES
Followthe installation instructions carefully.Failure
toinstall the filterproperlyvoidsthewarranty.
Beforeyou begininstallation,read thisentiremanu-
al.Then,obtain all the materialsand tools you will
need tomakethe installation.
Check localplumbing and electricalcodes.The
installation mustconformtothem.
NOTE:Codesinthe state ofMassachusettsrequire
installation byalicensed plumber.Forinstallation,
useplumbingcode248--CMRoftheCommonwealth
ofMassachusetts.
Use onlylead--free solderand fluxforall
sweat-solderconnections,asrequired by state and
federalcodes.
Usecarewhenhandling thefilter.Donotturnupside
down,drop,orseton sharp protrusions.
Do notlocatethe filterwherefreezing temperatures
occur.Do notattempt tofilterwaterover120°F.
Freezing,orhotwaterdamagevoidsthewarran-
ty.
Avoidinstalling in directsunlight. Excessivesun
heatmay cause distortion orotherdamage to non--
metallicparts.
Thefilterrequiresaminimumwaterflow(seespecifi-
cations)at the inlet. Maximumallowableinletwa-
terpressureis 125 psi. If daytime pressureisover
80 psi,nighttime pressuremayexceed the maxi-
mum.Use a pressurereducing valveifnecessary.
Adding a pressurereducing valvemayreducethe
flow.
Thisfilterworks on 24 volt--60 hzelectricalpow-
eronly.Besureto usethe included transformer.
This systemisnotintended to be used fortreating
waterthatismicrobiologicallyunsafe orofunknown
qualitywithoutadequate disinfection before orafter
the system.

FILL THEMINERAL TANK
1.Removethe tank clamps, figure 1,valve assem-
bly,o--ring seals(3),and the top distributor.
2.Usingafunnel,add the specified amountof filter
sand, then the mineral.
Note:The filterisfactoryfilled withthe correct
amountofgravel.Filtersand,and the desired filter
mineralare notincluded.
CAUTION:To preventsand and mineralfromenter-
ing the bottomdistributorand riser, temporarilyplug
withaclean rag.

SANITIZING THEFILTER
Careistaken at the factorytokeep you waterfilter
clean and sanitary.Materialsused tomakethe filter
will notinfectorcontaminateyourwatersupply,and
willnotcausebacterialtoformorgrow.However,dur-
ing shipping,storage,installing and operating,
bacteriacould getintothe filter.Forthisreason,sani-
tizing,asfollows,is suggested when installing.
Pourabout1 oz.(ETF2100PF10),or2 oz.
(ETF2100PF12),of the following disinfectantintothe
filter.
1.Calciumhypochlorite,availableingranularortablet
form,undertrade names such asPerchloron orHTH.
2.Common 5.25%household bleachsuch asClorox,
Linco,BoPeep,WhiteSail,Eagle,etc.
NOTE-- ACTIVATED CARBONFILTERS:ACTI-
VATED CARBONWILL ABSORBTHE SANITIZING
AGENT,EXPENDINGSOMECAPACITY.

3.Thoroughly clean all sand and mineralfromthe
tanktop opening.Then,install the top distributor
and o--ring seals(4),exactlyas showninfigure 1.
4.Lowerthe valve assembly,ontothe mineraltank,
centering overthe standpipe,Push downward, to
squeezethe o--rings,and install the clampsections
and bothretainers.BE SURETHECLAMPS AND
RETAINERSAREFIRMLYINPLACE.

SELECTINSTALLATION LOCATION
Considerall of the following when selecting an
installation location forthe filterselected.
STofilterallwaterinthehome,installthefilterclose
tothewatersupplyinlet. Toconservefilteredwa-
ter,outside faucets shouldremainonraw water.
SIfotherwaterconditioning equipmentisinstalled,
locate as showninFigure 3.
SAnearbydrainisneededtocarryawayregenera-
tion discharge water.Afloordrainispreferred,
withalaundrytub,standpipe,etc., asotherop-
tions(check yourlocalcodes).
SThe filterworks on 24 voltsonly.Atransformeris
included (FORINDOOR USE)toreduce
120V--60 Hzhouse electricalpower.Provide an
approved,grounded outletwithin 10’ of the filter.
The filterincludesa 10’ powercableforconnec-
tion between the transformerand the timer.
SPosition the filteratleast6”fromsurrounding
walls,orotherappliances, to allowaccess for
servicing.
SIfinstallingthefilterinanoutsidelocation,besure
toprovideprotection fromtheelements,contami-
nation,vandalism,and sunlightheat. The sun’s
heatcan meltplasticparts.

1. INSTALL INLETAND OUTLET FITTINGS
Note:All fittingsareonthe small parts skin pack.
a.Insert the turbine support, intothe valve outlet
port, up tothe shoulder.
NOTE:If installing the EcoWaterbypass valve,
see separateinstructionsincluded withit.
b.Slide a lubricated o--ring onto one of the copper
tubes.Carefullyinsertthecoppertubeintotheoutlet
port(figure 4)and securein placewith a plastic“C”
clip.
Note:Forlubrication,usesilicone grease approved
foruse on potablewatersupplies.
c.Repeatstepbonthe inletside.
2. TURN OFF WATERSUPPLY
a.Closethe mainwatersupply valve,nearwell
pump orwatermeter.
b.Shutoff the electricityorfuelsupplytothe water
heater.
c.Open high and lowfaucetsto drain all waterfrom
hose pipes.
3. INSTALLING 3--VALVE BYPASS
If installing a 3--valve bypass system,plumb as
needed,using FIGURE2 asa guide. If installing
sweatcopper,be suretoUSE LEAD--FREE SOL-
DERasrequired byfederaland Statecodes.Use
pipe jointcompound on outside pipe threads.
4. MOVE FILTER INTOPLACE
Movethe filterintothe installation position,setting
onasolid.smooth and levelsurface. If needed,
placethe filteron a section of3/4”plywood.Then
shimunderthe plywood tolevelthe filterFIGURE5.
CAUTION:DONOTPLACE SHIMSDIRECTLY
UNDERTHESHROUD.The weightofthe tankmay
causethe shroud tofracture at the shim.
5.ASSEMBLEINLETAND OUTLETPLUMBING
Measure,cutandlooselyassemble pipe and fittings
fromthe mainwaterpipe (orfrombypass valves
installedinstep3),tothefilterinletandoutletcopper
tubes.
BE SUREUNFILTEREDWATERSUPPLY PIPE

terflowdirection tobesure.

6.COLDWATERPIPE GROUNDING
Thehousecoldwaterpipe (metalonly)isoftenused
asa ground forthe house electricalsystem.The
3--valve bypass type ifinstallation,showninFIG-
URE2,willmaintaingroundcontinuity. Ifyouusethe
plasticbypassvalve atthe filter,continuityisbroken.
Torestorethe ground,install one of the following
grounds.
a.Usethe included hoseclampsand wiretojumper
acrosstheinletandoutletcoppertubesFIGURE6a.
NOTE:Hoseclampsmustbe placed on pipesbe-
foresoldering.
b.Install a#4copperwire across the removed sec-
tion ofmainwaterpipe,securely clamping on both
ends(figure 6b).
7.CONNECTINLETAND OUTLETPLUMBING
Completethe inletand outletplumbing asapplica-
ble.
a.SOLDERED COPPER
(1)Thoroughly clean and fluxall joints.
(2)Removetheinletand outlet tubesfromthevalve
(pull plastic“C”clips),and o--ringsfromthe tubes.
DONOTSOLDERWITHTUBES INT THE VALVE.
SOLDERINGHEATWILL DAMAGETHE VALVE.
(3)Makeall solderconnections.Besuretokeepfit-
tingsfullytogether,and pipes square and straight.
NOTE:Ifusing ground (step 6a),hoseclampsmust
be placed on pipesbeforesoldering.
(4)AFTERPLUMBINGHAS COOLED,repeat
steps1b and 1c.
b.THREADEDPIPE
(1)Applypipe jointcompound to all outside pipe
threads.
(2)Tighten all threaded joints.
(3)If SOLDERINGTOINLETAND OUTLET
TUBES,observesteps(1)through (4)above.
c.CPVCPLASTICPIPE
(1)Clean,primeandcementalljoints(followinstruc-
tionsof the plasticpipe and fittingsmanufacturer).

8. INSTALL VALVE DRAIN HOSE
a.Connectalength of5/8”I.D.(minimum)hoseto
the valve drain elbowon the controllerFIGURE2.
The elbowacceptseithera hose ontothe barbfit-
ting,orstandard garden hose ontothe threads.To
usethe threads,cutoff the barbswith a hacksaw.
NOTE:Flexibledrain hoseisnotallowedinalllocali-
ties.See option on page 7.
b.Run the hoseto a floordrain,and astypically
showninFIGURE2, tie orwirethe end to a brick or
otherheavyobject. Thiswill prevent“whipping”dur-
ing regenerations.Besureto provide a 1--1/2”mini-
mumairgap, to preventpossiblesewerwaterback-
up.

laundrytub orstand pipe asa good drain point for
thishose.Avoidlong drain hoseruns,orelevating
the hose.
9.PRESSURETESTINGFORLEAKS
TOPREVENTEXCESSIVE AIRPRESSUREIN
THEFILTERAND PLUMBINGSYSTEM,DOTHE
FOLLOWINGSTEPS INORDER
a.Open two ormorefiltered waterfaucets,both hot
and cold.
b.Referringtofigure7,turnthebypassvalvestoser-
vice position.
c.Slowlyopen the mainwatersupply valve.
d.Closethe filtered waterfaucetsafterboth of the
following occur.
-- water runs smoothly,with no airbubbles
-- you can smell the sanitizing (page 5)bleach odor
at the faucets
e.Check yourcompleteinstallation forleaks. If re-
workisrequired,be sureto observe precautionsin
step 6.
10.CONNECTALL LEADWIRES
a.Connectthe wireharness tothevalveswitchFIG-
URE9.The switchison the outletside valvevalve
cover,behind the motor.
NOTE:Checktobesuretheconnectoris secure,on
the back of the timer.
b.Attachthe maleconnector,on the valvemotor
leadwire, the the matching femaleconnectoron the
faceplatetimer.
c.Connect the powercableleadstothe twotermi-
nalson the transformer.
11.CONNECT TOELECTRICALPOWER
Connect the timerpowercableleadstothe twoter-
minalsonthetransformerFIGURE9.Plugthetrans-
formerinto a continuously“live”,grounded,
120V--60Hzhouse electricaloutlet, approved bylo-
calcodes.

1.Whenthetransformerispluggedintotheelectrical

be fullyfiltered.To havefullyfiltered waterimmedi-
ately,waituntil the recharge (step 2 above)isover.
Then,drainthe waterheateruntil water runs cold.

GENERALINFORMATION
...SEDIMENTFILTERS-- Asediment filterremoves,
sand,clay,silt, orfine organicmatterfromwater.
You can see sedimentinwaterbyholding a sample,
inaclearglass,uptoalight. The particlesareeither
suspended orsettled tothe bottomof the glass.
“FilterAggregate”mineralmechanicallyfiltersthe
sedimentparticlesaswaterpassesthroughthebed.
Thismineral lastsindefinitelywhen properlymain-
tained.
...ACID NEUTRALIZERS-- Acidwater (6.0to 6.8
pH)is corrected with an acid neutralizerfilter.Acid
water,although sometimes clearin appearance,
shortensthelife ofironpipe,and corrodescopperor
brass pipe and fittings. It causesgreen orblue
stainson plumbing fixturesand mayetch porcelain
enamelovera period of time.
Acidwater,asitpassesthrough the filterNeutralite
mineralbed,dissolves some of the mineral.This
raisesthe pHabove 6.8, to neutralizethe acid.Be-
causethemineraldoesdissolve,the filtereventually
needsrefilling.The time between refills varieswith
the degree ofacidityand howmuchwaterisused.
The average life of the be isaboutone year.
...TASTE AND ODORFILTERS-- Ataste and odor
filterremovesmosttastes,odorsandcertainorganic
colorsfromwater.Bad tastesand odorsare due to
avarietyofcauses(chlorine,petroleum, tannins,
etc.).The activated carbon mineral,ofataste and
odorfilter,hasa high capacityforabsorbing these
impurities.
Theactivatedcarbonbedusuallylastsforaboutone
year.However,high amountsof tastesand odors
and/orexcessivewaterusagemayshortenthistime.
Activated carbon isnonregenerative and needsre-
placing when exhausted.
SERVICE, BACKWASH AND FASTRINSE
SERVICE(See figure 11): Unfiltered waterenters
the valveinletport. Internalvalve porting routesthe
waterdown and out the top distributor,intothe min-
eraltank.The waterisfiltered asitpassesthrough
the mineralbed, then entersthe bottomdistributor.
Filtered waterflowsback intothe valve and out the
valve outlet, tothe housefiltered waterpipes.
Intime, the filterneeds cleaning toremovesedi-
ments,dirt, iron,etc., fromthe mineralbed.This
cleaning isdone intwostages,orcycles,called
backwash and fastrinse. It is started automatically
bythe timer.
BACKWASH(See figure 12): The timerstartsthe
valvemotorand movesthe valveinto backwash
position.Waterisrouted down and out the bottom
distributor,up through the mineralbed,and out the
top distributortothe drain.The fast flow(controlled
byaflowplug inthe drainfitting)flushesdirt, sedi-
ments,iron deposits,etc. tothe drain.The mineral
bed islifted and expanded formaximumcleaning.
FASTRINSE (See figure 13): Valverotation posi-
tionstheinnerdiscs sowaterflowentersthemineral
tankthrough the top,and exitsat the bottom, tothe
drain.The fast flowofwaterdownward,packs the
mineralbed and preparesit for returntoservice.
The timerenergizesthe valvemotoragaintoreturn
the valvetoservice.
