Einstein THE OCTOPUS Ultimate User manual

2
Dear EINSTEIN customer,
With your purchase of the EINSTEIN power strip The Octopus ultimate you now own a compo-
nent not only of the highest mechanical and electrical qualities, but a component that is
technically made as good and safe as possible. In order to fully appreciate the great bene-
fits of this unit, we kindly ask you to carefully read these instructions and manual.
The Octopus ultimate is a power strip that does not offer the usual placebo effect which nei-
ther improves the sound nor makes any sort of technical sense. That naturally made little
sense to us. Quite simply, this is not Einstein‟s philosophy which we have maintained for so
many years. The new case is made of solid stainless steel and sets absolute standards in build
quality and mechanical stability. It is impossible to make a better or more perfect component
case. Classically simple and elegant looking, while functional - in typical Einstein style.
To satisfy not only the optical quest for perfection, a specially sourced high power input con-
nector resistant to up to 16A, provides an unthrottled input signal which is not burdened by
the typically throttled 10A consumer grade input connectors, thus solving this “bottleneck”
right at the source. An additional mechanical lock prevents that mains cable from acciden-
tally being disconnected or loosened. Through use of The Octopus‟ enclosed matching plug,
we can accommodate even larger cable cross-sections comfortably, and all power cables
can thus be used without having the disadvantage of a 'flexible' mains input socket.
The mains input connector has an additional 2-pole switch, thus allowing for The Octopus to
be completely disconnected from the mains power supply.
To further take advantage of this high-current power input distributor, each of the eight slots
behind the mains input are wired with silver-plated conductors with Teflon-clad high-wire
cross-sections.
The entire bar has an effective surge protection circuit. A special logic displays the detected
phase when the power bar is connected to your mains line correctly.
Included on the 'red' side of the power strip is an effective RF filter, which prevents disruptive
RF radiation in the power bar. Of course, this filter utilizes reverse damping, which minimizes
high-frequency interference of the connected components (in particular digital devices or
devices with switching power supplies).
The Octopus The power strip features eight power slots (four of which are filtered), a surge
protector that protects all connected equipment, an RF filter, a phase detector, and lastly a
voltage indicator that shows the mains incoming voltage. This voltage detector also recog-
nizes disturbing DC voltages present in the network, if they are above a defined value (DC
detect). Too high a DC component in the network affects the function and limits the quality
of playback of your HiFi components.
In typical Einstein fashion, The Octopus The power strip is a useful and stylish accessory. Quite
simply, there is no better way to make a power strip.
Regards from Bochum,
Volker Bohlmeier

Please read this instruction carefully before connecting the EINSTEIN The Octopus ultimate
power strip to your hifi system.
Please note that on a mains strip there is full mains voltage on some components. Do not
open the mains strip –this might be dangerous to your life! Please contact an authorized
dealer or an electrician.
Safety information and precautions:
Do not manipulate the component in any way (loss of warranty, danger of
electric shock).
The power strip must be protected from moisture.
Please contact your dealer / distributor or us in case of technical fault.
1. Package Content

Manual
2. Power strip placement
The casing of the EINSTEIN The Octopus power strip is made from handpolished stainless steel
and is therefore long lasting, non corrosive and extremely solid. This surface is classy but also
delicate. To avoid fingerprints we recommend to wear the cotton gloves provided for un-
packing and connecting.
The power strip is also prepared for wall-mounting.
3. Connection of the power strip and basic functions
Each power strip is thoroughly tested before leaving our company. Nevertheless we would
like to ask you to check the power strip „pure‟ for correct function before connecting your hifi
system to the power strip. Please insert the mains cable into the mains socket of the power
strip and lock the cable with the mechanic security clamp.
Before inserting the mains plug into the mains socket the power switch of the power strip
should be off (0). Switching on the power strip there will show the actual voltage (on the
black slot side) and the blue LED that indicates that the overvoltage protector (the surge pro-
tection circuit) is active (on the red slot side).
Surge protection circuit This LED positioned on the bottom of the function field on the red lot
side should be glowing permanently. When this LED is not working this means that the surge
protection circuit has been triggered or the LED is defective. Then the blown fuse or the de-
fect LED have to be exchanged. In both cases contact your authorized dealer or distributor.
Please note that during a thunderstorm it is recommendable to completely disconnect the
power strip and your hifi system from the electrical power supply!
Phase detect If the second LED is glowing(mid left within the function field on the red slot
side) which is positioned right beside the inscription Phase 180° this indicates that the
mains plug has to be turned by 180° at the power outlet. Then the LED will turn off. Phase is
positioned always on the upper part (crest of the power strip).

Filter Included on the 'red' side of the power strip is an effective RF filter, which prevents dis-
ruptive RF radiation in the power bar. Of course, this filter utilizes reverse damping, which mi-
nimizes high-frequency interference of the connected components (in particular digital de-
vices or devices with switching power supplies). You can connect components up to a cur-
rent draw of overall 6 A. At more than 6 A the overcurrent protection will blow which sets the
complete filter side out of operation! (Please contact your authorized dealer)
Voltage Indicator The voltage indicator is positioned on the black slot side and shows the
current mains voltage. If the mains voltage shown constantly differs more than + or –10% from
the mains voltage usually provided in your country, you should contact your dealer.
DC detect If the LED DC detect is glowing this indicates that present in your power supply sys-
tem are disturbing DC voltages which might have a negative effect on the performance of
your hifi system (humming transformers and reduced power reserve and thus less dynamics).
Sources for these disturbing DC voltages can be dimmers, flow heaters, electric floor heating
and others. There is no DC voltage protection included in the power strip since such a circuit
also has negative qualities and therefore should only be connected to your system if abso-
lutely necessary. Please contact us if you have any further questions.
Power Switch The On/Off switch of the power strip positioned right beside the mains socket is
a 2-pole switch, thus allowing for the power strip tob e completely disconnected from the
mains power supply.
! Please note: Do not use this switch to switch on/off your complete hifi system. All high power
hifi components like powerful amplifiers should be switch on or off with the power switch of
the component.
In case you prefer to use a different mains cable than the high quality EINSTEIN mains cable
provided, please note that the input connector of the The Octopus ultimate power strip is a
specially sourced high power input connector resistant to up to a 16A (this is a C19/C20
combination). Most other power strips as well as mains cable are customized with C13/C14
combinations that are limited to 10A)! If you have difficulties in getting a suitable plug please
contact us.
4. Connecting the power strip to your hifi system
After checking the function of your power strip, please turn off by using the ON/OFF switch
before connecting the power strip to your hifi system.
Digital components like CD Player, Streaming devices, D/A converters and components with
switching power supplies with low current draw are inserted on red slot „filter‟ side. Please do
not connect components with a current draw over 1.5A! These should be inserted on the
black slot side without filter. For all other components it is up to your preference.
!Please make sure that on the red slot side the overall current draw may not be over 6A! At
more than 6 A the overcurrent protection will blow which sets the complete filter side out of
operation! (Please contact your authorized dealer).
5. Initial Operation
Once all components are connected to your power strip, please switch on the power strip.
Then you switch on all components starting with the sources, preamp and least integrated or
power amplifiers.
