1.0Introduction
RS-232 interface isdesignedfortwoterminal equipmentsconnection(DTE).
RS-232 interface rangeislimitedto15mdistance.RS-485 interface signals
transmissionenablestoincreasecommunicationrange,transmissioninterference
immunityandcommunicationpartners´number.
1.1Useoftheconverter
Theconverterincreasestransmissionimmunityagainstelectrical disturbance but
notagainstatmospheric electricity influences! Toleadthecableoutside
buildings,it isnecessarytoprovideadditional over-voltageprotectionontheinput
points.Theconverterallowstransmissionrateup to115200 bps.Thismaximum
attainableratedecreasesduetothelinelengthand/oritsimpedance growth.
Recommendedmaximumlinelengthis1200 mat therateof 9600 bps.

2.0Operationprinciples
RS-485 interface isusedtotwo-waysimultaneouscommunicationinonepairof
conductors.Forthisreason,thetransmissionhastobehalf-duplexthat means
switchingoff RS-485 transmitterwhenreceivingtoallowtransmittingtoother
communicationpartnersandswitchingonduringitsowntransmittingonly. There
aretwomethodshowtooperatethetransmitter:
1) ThetransmitteriscontrolledfromDTE bysignal RTSoritsinvertpolarity.
2) DTE doesnotuseRTS(thisinterface doesnotdisposethissignal orSWdoes
notuseit)andtheconverterhastointerpretitssignal TxD automatically. At
theTxDchangingmomentfromidlestate(fromthenegativetopositive
polarity),theconverteractivatesthelinktransmitterautomatically. The
transmitter isswitchedoff after thecertaintime of RTSswitchingoff or
TxDreturn totheneutral polarity.Timeinterval length hastobedependent
onappliedtransmissionratebecauseintheautomaticmodethereit is
necessarytokeepthetransmitteractivefortheperiodequal toonebyte
transmissiontime.
Intheautomaticmode, everydevice that istotransmit hastowait at leastforthe
time fromthelastbyterecordedonRS-485 bus.Ifit istothecontrarythefirst
transmittedbytewouldbedamaged.

3.3Convertersetting
Toworkproperly,theconverterneedstimeoutsetting τ.Forthiscasethereare
