licensed electrician.
!WARNING
General
The Downrod Coupler rigidly connects two
downrod extensions, allowing you to posi-
tion your ceiling fan closer to the floor than
a single downrod extension would allow.
The fan will provide efficient air circulation
nearer to the floor where the occupants
will benefit from the improved air
movement. In all cases, the minimum
blade-to-floor clearance shall be main-
tained as indicated in the fan Owner’s
Manual.

The method of connecting the wires from
the downrod extension to the fan motor
wires will vary, depending upon the type of
motor your fan has. There are two types of
motors used on Emerson fans: the K55
motor and the 188mm or 153mm motor.
On the K55 motor, the blade flanges
attach to the rubber hub on the motor
shaft. On the 188mm or 153mm motor, the
blade flanges attach directly to the bottom
of the motor.
Hanger Ball Removal
If you are installing downrod extensions on
a new fan, remove the hanger ball from
the downrod in accordance with Step 1.
If you are installing downrod extensions on
an installed fan, first remove the fan from
the ceiling and then perform Steps 1
and 2.
1. Remove the hanger ball from the down-
rod by loosening the setscrew in the
hanger ball until the ball falls freely
down the downrod (Figure 2). Remove
the pin from the downrod, and then
remove the hanger ball. Retain the pin
and hanger ball for reinstallation in a
latter step.
2. Remove downrod from motor coupling
by loosening the setscrew(s) on the
motor coupling using the setscrew
wrench (supplied), or phillips head
screw driver (Figure 3). Remove the
hairpin clip from the clevis pin and pull
the clevis pin out of the motor coupling.
Slide the downrod out of the motor cou-
pling. Retain the hairpin clip and clevis
pin for reinstallation in a latter step.

1. Using the setscrew wrench (supplied),
install the four setscrews into the cou-
pler body as shown (Figure 4). Be sure
the tip of each set screw does not
extend past the inner wall of the
coupler.
2. Position the downrods and downrod
coupler on a stable padded surface as
shown (Figure 5).
3. Carefully feed the new longer lead
wires into the top of the upper downrod,
thru the center of the coupler, and final-
ly thru the lower downrod (Figure 5).
It may be necessary to pull the wires
through the downrods using a wooden
dowel rod.
4. Insert the upper downrod into the cou-
pler. Be careful not to pinch the wires
between the downrod and coupler.
Align the cross holes on the downrod
with the center hole on the coupler.
Insert one shoulder screw (supplied)
into the center hole and push it thru the
downrod cross holes carefully, to avoid
damaging the electrical wires. Using
the setscrew wrench, tighten the shoul-
der screw into the threaded hole on the
far side of the coupler until it is tight
(Figure 6).
5. Repeat this step for the lower downrod.

Assembly Procedure for Fans
with K55 Series Motor
If your fan has a 153mm or 188mm
motor, refer to the next section.
(To simplify final fan installation, do not
install the fan blades and flanges to the
fan until after the fan has been hung from
the ceiling mounting bracket.)
1. Orient the fan in upright position on a
stable work surface, preferably the
styrofoam pad that the fan was shipped
in. The wire leads provided with your
fan will now need to be shortened in
preparation for installation of downrod
lengths longer than six feet.
2. Cut off the existing black, blue and
white wires 4” above the top of the
motor coupling. Discard the excess
wire. Strip 3/8” of insulation from the
end of each motor wire (Figure 8).
3. Measure 6” from the bottom of the
downrod assembly and cut the new
lead wires to this length. Discard the
excess wire. Strip 3/8” of insulation
from the end of each new wire.
4. Rotate the fan onto its side and insert
the bottom of the downrod assembly
into the motor coupling. Feed the new
wire leads through the coupling slot
(Figure 9). Be careful not to pinch the
wires between the downrod and the
4
6. The four coupler setscrews can now be
tightened. Using the supplied setscrew
wench, carefully turn each setscrew -
turn in an alternating pattern until all
four set screws are tight and locked into
the downrods. The downrod assembly
should now be rigid. If the assembly
feels loose, check each setscrew and
shoulder screw to verify they are tight.
7. Install the fan motor coupling cover
(supplied with the fan) onto the bottom
downrod (Figure 7).
8. Install the ceiling cover (supplied with
the fan) onto the upper downrod
(Figure 7).
9. Reinstall the hanger ball onto the upper
downrod. Route the new wire leads
through the hanger ball and slide the
hanger ball onto the downrod (Figure
7). Install the cross pin through the
holes at the top of the downrod and
slide the hanger ball up the downrod,
aligning the ball so the cross pin is cap-
tured in the groove in the top of the
hanger ball. Pull the hanger ball up
tight against the cross pin and securely
tighten the setscrew in the hanger ball
(Figure 2). A loose setscrew will create
fan wobble.

downrod with cross holes in motor
coupling. Insert clevis pin through the
cross holes carefully, to avoid damag-
ing the electrical wires. Slide clevis pin
in until it passes through both sides of
the motor coupling (Figure 3).
5. Insert the hairpin clip into the hole in
the end of the clevis pin. Be sure the
hairpin is securely in place (Figure 3).
6. Tighten the motor coupling setscrew (s)
using the setscrew wrench (supplied)
(Figure 3). A loose setscrew will cause
the fan to wobble.
7. With the downrod secured, connect the
pairs of black, blue and white wires
using the wire connectors supplied
(Figure 9).
NOTE: If your ceiling fan has uplights
and/or is being controlled by a canopy-
mounted receiver remote control, you will
also have to connect pairs of yellow and/or
red and brown wires.
8. Remove the masking tape from the
top of the downrod assembly and free
the lead wires.
9. Refer to the ceiling fan Owner’s
Manual to complete the installation of
the coupling cover.
It is critical that the clevis pin in the motor cou-
pling is properly installed and the setscrew(s)
securely tightened. Failure to verify that the pin
and setscrew(s) are properly installed (as
shown in Figure 3) could result in the fan falling.
