Electrical installation must be in accordance with all applicable national electrical codes (NEC, CEC) as well
as local electrical and building codes, regulations and inspection procedures. Electrical inspection of the
installation may be required before, during, and after installation. Check with your local electrical inspection
department before beginning installation. This device is a Class A Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter as required
by some electrical codes for floor warming installations.

INSTALLATION
New Construction Rough-In
•Fastenelectricalconnectionbox(ECB)asrequired
per local electrical code on side of stud.
•Drillone1-inchholeinbaseplateforsingle-cable
installation and two 1-inch holes for two-cable
installation.
•Threadpull-cord(notprovided)throughhole(s)
inbaseplateandincorrespondingholesinECB.
SecurethepullcordsintheECB.
Tie floor ends of pull-cord and fasten to floor.
•Installtheguardplate(notprovided)overthe
hole for the cold leads and sensor wire before
drywalling.
•InstallguardplateasshowninFigure1.
Thermostat Installation
•Ensurethesupplybranchcircuithasbeen
disconnected / de-energized.
•PullsensorwireintoECBandsecuretothefloor.
See Figure 2. The sensor must not cross or overlap
anyothercableonthefloorANDmustbe
embedded in the cementituous based mortar in
the same manner as the heating cables.
•Thefloortemperaturesensorwirecanbe
extendedtoamaximumof50feetwithULorCSA
recognized wire 22 AWG rated for 300 V.
•Preparethethermostatforinstallation:
1.Remove the thermostat and screws from
packaging.
2.LoosenthescrewonthebottomoftheFrontPanel
andlifttheFrontPanelasshowninFigure3.
3.Trimexcesslengthofsupplybranchcircuit,
cold lead and temperature sensor cables, as
necessary, leaving about 6” projecting from
theECB,seeFigure4.Mostheatingcablesare
provided with identification labels attached to the
end of the cold leads – ensure that these labels
remainonthecoldleadinsidetheECB.
4.Prepareeachheatingcable/coldleadfor
connection/splicingandconnectionperFigure5
or Figure 6, as applicable.
5.PreparethesensorwireperFigure5orFigure6,as
applicable.Usescrewdriverforconnectiontothe
sensor wire connections (black and white wires) to
correspondingBLKandWHTterminals.
6.NeatlyfoldallwiringintoECBandfasten
thermostatwith#6-32screwsprovided.Donot
applyexcessiveforcetothethermostat.Apply
firm but continuous force until the screws can be
fully seated.
7.Align the thermostat power base, then finish
tightening the two screws.
8.HooktheFrontPanelunittothetopofthePower
Baseunit,swingdownandpresstheFrontPanel
intothePowerBaseunitslightly,tightenthescrew
at the bottom of the unit.
A. Button Explanation
LCD Display–Largescalereadoutwithbluecolor
backlight which indicates the operational status of
the thermostat.
On/Off Button – Allows easy selection switching On
or Off the thermostat.
Event/Program Button–Pressingthisbuttononce
enters the thermostat into programming mode or
cycles through the program events in programming
mode.
Next/Save Button –Pressingthisbuttonacceptsthe
modifiedsettingandcyclestheprogramtothenext
parameter.
-Pressingandholdingthisbuttondownfor2seconds
saves all changes that have been accepted during
thecurrentprogrammingcyclesandexitsthe
programming mode.
Back/Cancel Button –Pressingthisbuttonmoves
the programming back to the previous setting
parameter.

Hold Button –Usethisbuttontotemporarily(press
once) or permanently (press twice) change of the
floor temperature settings.
Settings Button –Usethisbuttontoaccessthe
SettingsmenutochangetheTime,Day,°Cor°F,
5/2dayor7day,BacklightandFloorTypes(Tileor
Wood) settings of the thermostat.
GFCI Test Button –Usethisbuttontosimulatea
ground fault, test the GFCI circuitry and activate the
GFCI fault light. When a ground fault is detected,
the GFCI test button will be illuminated in red color.
GFCI Reset – Resets a simulated or repaired GFCI
fault, and deactivates GFCI fault light.
Up/Down Button –Usedduringprogramming
to move values up or down (if held down for
2 seconds, values will change rapidly).
B. LCD Explanation
Wake – The time in the morning when you want the
floor to start warming up, about one hour before
you wake-up.
Leave – The time when you leave for work or school,
and want the floor to start cooling down to save
energy.
Return – The time in the afternoon when you want
the floor to start warming up to a comfortable
temperature, about one hour before you return
home.
Sleep – The time at night you want the floor to start
cooling down to save energy.
Auto–AutomaticMode.Indicatesthethermostatis
operating with one of the automatic temperature
adjusting programs, the floor temperature is
adjusted according to programmed instructions.

automatic mode.
5/2 Day – Indicates the thermostat is operating in
the5/2Dayprogramselectionwithintheautomatic
mode,withseparateprogrammingforMonday
throughFriday(5day),andSaturdayandSunday(2
day).
7 Day – Indicates the thermostat is operating in the
7Dayprogramselectionwithintheautomaticmode.
Sensor – Flashes when the Floor Sensor is
malfunctioning.
Set Temp –Indicates the adjusted floor temperature
duringthesettingoftheAutoModes.
Actual Floor Temp – The floor temperature readings
may be represented in either F or C. The operating
floor temperature range is from 60 F (16 C) to 104 F
(40 C). The displayed floor temperature range is
from 32 F (0 C) to 120 F (49 C). The thermostat only
functions in the operating floor temperature range
(from60F/16Cto104F/40C).
Each Individual “S” segment will be growing
from small to large which indicates that the
floor heating is energized.
Min – Indicates the value of time in “minutes” for the
LCDbacklight-turns“On”fortwominutesonly.
When all five “sSSSS” segments flash slowly, this
indicates that the floor heating is in 3 minutes
standby cycle.
Tile or Wood Mode – TheselectionoftheTile/Wood
modeistolimitthemaximumfloortemperature
dependingonthesurfacetype.Themaximum
floortemperaturefortileissetto40°C(104°F).The
maximumfloortemperatureforwoodissetto30°C
(86°F).
C. Energizing the Thermostat
When power is first connected to the thermostat or
afteranextendedpoweroutage,theLCDDIsplay
will show display segments with backlight on for 10
seconds as per Figure 7 shown. The display will then
flash“Hour(12:00)”,“PM”,and“Mo”segmentsas

(andthenthehoursandthenAM/PM)andtherate
of change gradually increases. Once the time is set,
presstheNext/Savebuttontosettheday-usetheUp
orDownbuttonstoadjustday.PresstheNext/Save
buttononcetofinishandexitfirsttimesetting.
No additional changes to any settings are allowed
unlesstheOn/OffbuttonissettoOnmode.
D. Quick Start
The thermostat is pre-programmed for immediate
operationinthe5/2mode.PresstheOn/Off
button to On position; the thermostat will control
the floor temperature to a moderate temperature
(86°F/30°C)suchthatthecablesareonlyenergized
in the morning and the evening, and off during the
dayandthenight.Theexactscheduleofoperation
isasfollows:

once and adjust setpoint temperature to desired
setting,PresstheHoldbuttononce–thistemporarily
adjusts the setpoint temperature to the desired
setting – the setpoint temperature will revert to
AutomaticProgramatthebeginningofthenext
Eventasnotedabove.Byimmediatelypressingthe
Hold button a second time, this permanently sets
the setpoint temperature at the desired setting.
E. Settings
TheSettingsmenuwillallowyoutochangetheTime/
Day,Units(ForC),Program,BacklightTimeandFloor
Type.BypressingtheSettingsbutton,youenterthe
Setting menus. You can scroll through the various
menusbypressingtheNext/Savebutton(“Advance
toNextMenu”).Onceinamenu,youcanchange
the“flashing”parametersbyusingtheUporDown
buttons.PressingtheNext/Savebuttonacceptsthe
changesandscrollstonextmenu.
ToexitSettingsmenuswithoutsavingchangesatany
time (“Exit Without Saving”),pressandholdBack/
Cancel button for two seconds.
TosavechangesandexitSettingsmenus,pressand
holdNext/Savebuttonfortwoseconds(“Save and
Exit”).
Ifnokeyispressedfor90secondstheprogramwillexit
the Settings menus, save all changes that have been
accepted and return to normal display.

PresstheSettingsbuttononce,thedisplayis
disabledexcepttheHour,Minute,AMorPMdigits
flash. This signifies that the time is waiting to be
adjusted. See Figure 9.

andminutes(includingAM/PM).PresstheNext/
Save button once to accept the time setting and
movetotheDaysetting.
2.PresstheUporDownbuttontosettheDay–the
“Day”symbolflashes–SeeFig.10.PresstheUp
orDownbuttontosettheday.Youcannow
AdvancetoNextMenuorExitWithoutSavingor
SaveandExit.

1.IntheUnitsmenu,thepreviouslyselected

2.IntheProgrammenu,youcanselecteither5/2
or7Daymode.(Youcanalsochangethedetails
of the automatic program for each mode – see
SectionH).UseUporDownbuttonstoselect
mode.
3.IntheBacklightmenu,youcanchangethe
time that the backlight stays on after the last
button is pressed – options are 2 minutes or On
continuously.UseUpordownbuttonstoselect.
4. In the Floor Type menu, you can select the type
of flooring (Tile or Wood) for your application.
F. Temporary and Permanent - Floor
Temperature Settings
Temporary - At any time when the thermostat is in
theONposition(AutomodeiconwillshowonLCD),
the setpoint temperature setting can be temporarily
changed.BypressingeithertheUPorDOWN
button once, the floor temperature digits will flash.
PresstheUPorDOWNbuttonagaintoobtainthe
desiredtemperature.PresstheHoldbuttononceto
temporarily save the setting. When the buttons are
not pressed for four seconds, it will automatically
save the last setting. The thermostat will use the new
temporarytemperaturesettinguntilthenextevent
timeisreached.TheAutoperiodicon(Wake,Leave,
Return or Sleep) and Hold will flash slowly.
Permanent – After adjusting the setpoint temperature
as noted above in “Temporary” section, the new
setpoint can be made permanent by pressing the
Hold button a second time. The Hold icon will show
on the display and will not flash. The Auto icon will
not be displayed. To disable the permanent hold
function, simply press the Hold button once again
– the thermostat returns to Auto mode and the
setpoint temperature will be in accordance with the
AutomaticProgram.
G. Personalizing Your Floor Comfort Schedule
The FGS series thermostats offer two programming
modes to personalize your floor comfort and
maximizeenergysavings.Thefirstprogrammodeis
the5/2Daymode,whichgroupsMonday–Friday
asthe“5”groupandSaturdayandSundayas
the “2” group. The second program mode is the
7Daymode,whichallowsyoutoprogrameach
day individually to suit your specific schedule. Each
programmodeallowsfouruniquetime/temperature
settings(“events”).Usually,youwouldselectthe
programmodethatbestsuitsyourschedule.(Hint:It
iseasierandquickertomodifythe5/2Dayprogram
thanthe7Dayprogram,sochoosethe5/2Dayifit
better suits your schedule.)
Boththe5/2Dayand7Daymodesarepre-
programmed, as noted in “Quick Start” above.
Theseprogramsareeasilymodified,asexplainedin
the appropriate sections below.
Priortomodifyingtheseprograms,youshould
consider that floors take time to heat up and cool
downtotheirsettemperatures.Keepinmindthat
you may want to set the Floor Temp about one
hour before you want the floor to be warm, this
allows adequate heat up time. Conversely, you
can set the Floor Temp to decrease about one hour
before you want the floor to reach its cool down
temperature.
