Systemdescription
Themodular,state-of-the-artEM304MKIIperformsaccurate,highresolutionseabed
mappinginshallowtofulloceandepth(11000metres).
TheEM304MKIIisdesignedtoperformseabedmappingwithanunsurpassed
resolution,coverageandaccuracy.Thesystemiscosteffective,reliableandeasily
operated.ThedesignoftheEM304MKIIisbasedonmorethan50yearsof
hydrographicexperiencewithechosounders,sonarsandunderwaterpositioningfor
civilianandmilitaryuse.Itisthelatestmodelinaseriesofdeepseamultibeamecho
soundersthatstartedwiththeEM300in1997.
TheEM304MKIIconsistofnewstate-of-the-artelectronicsandseparatetransmitand
receivetransducersinaMillsCrossconguration.Itutilizesthesameeld-proven
receivetransducerastheEM302andanewredesignedwidebandtransmittransducer
increasingthedepthandcoverage.Thenewtransmittransducermodelsaredesignedto
texistingEM302andEM304casingstoaccommodateupgradeswithaminimumof
hullintervention.Carehasbeentakentodesignahighlymodularandexiblesolution
withcompactelectronicsforeasierandfasterinstallation.Duetoaexibletransducer
design,thesystemcanbetailoredtoalmostanyrequiredsize.Thelargeststandardsize,
0.3x0.5degrees,givestheultimatesystemperformanceintermsofresolutionandrange,
whileasmaller4.0x4.0degreessolutioncanbeinstalledonanyvesselofopportunity.

Technicaldetails
TheEM304MKIIoperatesatsonarfrequenciesinthe20-32kHzrange.
Thetransmitfanisdividedinto4sectorsinshallowmodes(8sectorsindeepmodes)
tomaximizerangecapabilitybutalsotosuppressinterferencefrommultiplesofstrong
bottomechoes.Thesectorsaretransmittedsequentiallywithineachping,anduses
distinctfrequenciesorwaveforms.
Thenominalsonarfrequencyis26kHzwithanangularcoveragesectorofupto150ºand
1600beamsperping.Achievableswathwidthonaatbottomwillnormallybeupto
5.5times(140º)thewaterdepth.Theangularcoveragesectorisoperatorcontrollableor
maybesettoaxedrange.Itmayalsobesettovaryautomaticallywithdepthaccording
toachievablecoverage.Thismaximizesthenumberofusablebeams.Thebeamspacing
isnormallyhighdensityequidistantwithequiangleavailable.
Thetransmitfanissplitinseveralindividualsectorswithindependentactivesteering
accordingtovesselroll,pitchandyaw.Thisplaceallbeamsona“bestt”toaline
perpendiculartothesurveyline,thusensuringauniformsamplingofthebottomand
100%coverage.
Indualswathmodethetransmitfanisduplicatedandtransmittedwithasmalldifference
inalongtracktilt.Theappliedtilttakesintoaccountdepth,coverageandvesselspeedto
giveaconstantbeamseparationalongtrack.
ThesectorsarefrequencycodedorhaveFMchirps,andtheyaretransmittedsequentially
ateachping.Thesectorsteeringisfullytakenintoaccountwhenthepositionanddepth
ofeachbeamiscalculated,asistherefractionduetothesoundspeedprole,vessel
attitudeandinstallationangles.Thepulselengthandrangesamplingratearevariable
withdepth(autoormanual)forbestresolution.
Inshallowwatersduecareistakentotheneareldeffectsthroughneareldfocusing
individuallyappliedinthedifferentsectors.
EM304MKIIappliesonefocusrangeforeachofthetransmitsectorswhichareusedfor
shallowwaterenvironment.Dynamicbeamfocusingisusedforthereceptionbeams.
Thepingrateismainlylimitedbytheroundtriptraveltimeinthewateruptoaping
rateofmorethan5Hz.
