9033822 Description of Hardware 1
1. DESCRIPTION OF HARDWARE
Management Module
Enterasys Networks VH-SMGMT and VH-SMGMT2 Management
Modules can be used to configure and manage VH-2402S and
VH-2402S2 switches. An RS-232 connection, using a DB-9 connector, is
supported for out-of-band switch management. Serial console
management is performed using a terminal, or computer system running
communications software. See the VH-2402S/VH-2402S2 Management
Guide for more detailed information on managing switches via the serial
console.
Port LEDs
LEDs are located on the front panel of the switch. These LEDs can be
used to verify if the stack is functioning properly. The following table
details the indicator functions provided by the VH-2402S/VH-2402S2.
NOTE: The VH-SMGMT2 module is completely compatible
with the older VH-SMGMT module, so either can be
installed in a VH-2402S or VH-2402S2 switch.

2 Description of Hardware VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2

9033822 Installing the Module 3
2. INSTALLING THE MODULE
The VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2 module is field installable. Just follow the
instructions below.
Package Contents
This package includes:
•One VH-SMGMT or VH-SMGMT2 module
•One standard RS-232 null-modem cable
•This document
Handling the Module
The VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2 module can easily be damaged by
electrostatic discharge.
To prevent electrostatic damage, observe the following guidelines:
•Do not remove the module from its packaging until you are ready to
install it.
•Do not touch any of the module’s pins, connectors or components.
•Hold the module only by its edges or front panel.
•Wear an anti-static wristband connected to a suitable earth ground
whenever handling the module.
•Store or transport this module only in appropriate anti-static
packaging.
CAUTION: Do not install these modules in any units other
than the VH-2402S/VH-2402S2. Contact Enterasys
Networks for advice on newly released switches that may
be designed for use with these modules.
CAUTION: The VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2 module can
easily be damaged by electrostatic discharge.

4 Installing the Module VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2
Instructions
The VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2 Management Module must be installed in
the upper slot on the rear panel of the switch.
1. Power off the switch: Disconnect the AC power cord from the
switch. If a redundant power unit (RPU) is present, disconnect its DC
cable connection from the switch.
2. Remove network cables: If you are replacing a module, remove the
cable attached to the port on the module.
3. Loosen the screws on the installed module or slot faceplate:
Using your fingers or a flathead screwdriver, turn the screws securing
the module (or faceplate on the slot) in a counter-clockwise direction
until they are free of the chassis. Be sure not to completely remove
the screws from the module or faceplate.
4. Remove the installed module or faceplate: Firmly pull on the
screws until the module is free of the switch. Carefully slide the
module straight out of the slot.
Keep the original faceplate for future use. If you should remove the
module, replace the faceplate to prevent dust and debris from
entering the unit and to maintain proper air flow.
CAUTION: The switch must be powered off before
installing or replacing any module.

5. Insert the new module into the switch: Holding the new module
with the text on the front panel upright, carefully slide the module into
the upper slot on the rear panel, and press gently until it snaps into
place. Be sure the new module’s front panel is flush with the switch
panel.
6. Secure the new module: Secure the new module in place by
screwing the attached screws clockwise into the switch’s chassis.
Tighten them enough to secure the module, but not so tight as to
prevent them from being unscrewed by hand.
7. Connect the console port to a terminal:
- Connect a VT100 compatible terminal or a PC running a
terminal emulation program to the console port. Use the null-
modem cable provided with the Management Module, or use
a null-modem connection that complies with the wiring
assignments shown in "Port Specifications" in this guide.
NOTE: The VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2 module can only be
installed in the upper slot.

6 Installing the Module VH-SMGMT/VH-SMGMT2
- Connect one end of the interface cable directly to the
Management Module’s console port and tighten the retaining
screws.
- Connect the other end of the interface cable to a terminal (in
some instances, an adapter may be required to make this
connection).
- From your terminal, start the terminal emulation program.
- Configure the terminal to the following communication
settings: VT100 emulation, 19200 baud, no parity, 8 data bits,
1 stop bit, no flow control, ASCII character set.
8. Power on the switch: Reconnect the previously removed power
sources to the switch. Check the Mgmt LED indicator on the switch’s
front panel to be sure that the Management Module is operating
correctly. Refer to the table of LEDs in this guide for a description of
the LED indications.
Refer to the following manuals for the base unit for further details on using
this module:

9033822 Troubleshooting 7
APPENDIX A. TROUBLESHOOTING
If you experience any problems with the module, check the following
items before contacting Enterasys Networks Technical Support:
•Ensure that the switch with the module is powered up.
•Ensure that the device attached to the module is powered up and
operating correctly.
•Ensure that the module is properly seated in the slot.
•Check the connectors on both ends of the serial cable to be sure they
are properly engaged. Tighten the thumb screws on the cable
connectors to ensure a good connection.
