FreeLINK Wireless LAN System
Installation Procedure for Experienced Users
This installation procedure assumes that you know the
technical characteristics of your computer and your Ethernet
802.3 network. Section numbers refer to the relevant sections of
the FreeLINK Wireless LAN Installation Guide P/N 9030833.
Graphics of wiring connections and connector locations for
Transceiver/Interface Unit and Wireless Hub are shown
throughout this procedure. To install the FreeLINK system,
follow these steps:
STEP 1 - Identify the system components.
Unpack the Wireless LAN System and identify the Wireless
Hub, Wireless Hub antenna, Wireless Transceivers, and
Interface Units. You will install the Wireless Transceivers
and Interface Units Þrst. Figure 1 shows the Wireless
Transceiver/Interface Unit.

STEP 2 - Record transceiver serial numbers, and install the
workstation transceivers. Ref. Section 2.2 through 2.4
Record the last six digits of the serial number of each
interface unit imprinted on the bottom of the antenna
(Figure 2). You will need these numbers for system
conÞguration in Step 3. A table is provided for the numbers
in Appendix B of the Installation Guide.

THEN:
Connect each Wireless Transceiver antenna to the 25-pin D
connector on the transceiver rear panel (Figure 3). Connect the
ports on the multi-user interface to the Ethernet adapters in the
workstations. Plug the Wireless Transceiver power cable into a
110 volt AC outlet.

STEP 3 - Backup and configure system software.
Ref. Section 3.1
Make a backup copy of the Cabletron software diskette.
Insert this diskette into a PC, type
SETUP <Enter> , and
follow the conÞguration screens. Use Page Up and Page
Down to move between screens. Detailed instructions are
outlined in Chapter 3. Enter the interface unit serial numbers
you recorded in Step 1 into the Transceiver List.
STEP 4 - Assemble the Wireless Hub and Antenna.
Ref. Section 2.5 through 2.9
Connect the Wireless Hub antenna to the Wireless Hub
Chassis as in Figure 4, below. Orient the antenna as shown in
Figure 5. Connect either the AUI port or the RJ-45 port on the
Wireless Hub rear panel to an Ethernet backbone or
transceiver. Set the port select switch for the port you use.

STEP 5 - Boot Wireless Hub with configured software.
Insert the conÞgured software diskette into the Wireless Hub.
Push the Power ON switch. The Wireless Hub should boot
and become operational in approximately two minutes.

STEP 6 - Orient workstation transceivers and check for
links. Ref. Section 2.10
Orient the workstation transceivers for maximum signal
strength (max number of yellow LEDs lit), and check solid
green LINK LED for Link Status. See Figure 6, below.

STEP 7 - Check all workstation network status conditions.
The Wireless LAN should now be fully functional. Run
your Ethernet application from each workstation, and
check for access to the network.
