1 Introduction
This installation manual contains information on how to install the indoor part
of a MINI-LINK High Capacity system. The outdoor part is described in the
MINI-LINK Point-to-point Outdoor installation Manual.
The MINI-LINK High Capacity system is a digital microwave radio link for voice
and data transmission and represents a new generation of synchronous radio
for short haul point-to-point implementations.
The radio system provides traffic capacity at 155 Mbit/s and supports the
SDH STM-1 electrical and optical standards as well as the SONET OC-3
standard.
The terminal consists of an outdoor radio unit with antenna, and indoor units
which hold traffic, modem, service and switching functions. Two types of
terminal configuration are possible: unprotected terminals (1+0) and protected
terminals (1+1).

1.2 Target Group
This manual has been written for field technicians and supervisors who work
with the installation of MINI-LINK equipment on site.
The personnel must be authorized and have the appropriate technical training
and experience.
The field technician is expected to be experienced in radio and mobile
communications, and have a good understanding of technical English or any
other language in which this manual is available.

2 Safety Instructions
2.1 Introduction
This section describes the system used for presenting safety information.
Note: Reduce the risk of accidents by studying all the instructions carefully
before you start working. Should questions arise regarding the
safety instructions, contact your supervisor or your local Ericsson
representative.
The relevant manual (including this safety information) and specific instructions
supplied by Ericsson must be followed in any work performed on Ericsson
products or systems. Sufficient knowledge of English or of any other language,
in which the manuals or instructions are available, is necessary to perform the
tasks in the manual in a correct and safe way.
The safety information in the relevant manuals presupposes that any person
performing work on Ericsson products or systems has the education, training
and competence required to perform the task correctly. For certain tasks
additional or special training might be required. For more precise information on
the amount and content of the general and/or special training required to work
on Ericsson products or systems, please contact the local Ericsson company.

2.2 Safety Standards
The equipment meets the requirements according to EN 60950 (IEC 950), EN
60215 (IEC 215), EN 60529, ANSI/UL 1950 and CAN/CSA-C22.2 No. 950-95.

2.3 Safety Requirements
The safety requirements in the following sections must be followed to avoid
personal injury and damage to tangible property.
It is the responsibility of the local project manager / supervisor to make certain
that local regulations and the safety instructions in this manual are known and
followed.
2.3.1 Service Personnel
Installation and service must be carried out by authorized personnel having
the appropriate technical training and experience necessary to be cognizant
of hazards during installation and service, and of measures to minimize any
danger to themselves or any other person.
2.3.2 Access to Equipment
Access to equipment in use shall be restricted to authorized personnel.
2.3.3 Safety Regulations
Use local safety regulations where these are mandatory. The safety instructions
in this manual shall be used as a supplement to the local regulations.
In case of conflict between the safety instructions in this manual and the
local safety regulations, the local safety regulations shall prevail if these are
mandatory. If the local regulations are not mandatory the safety instructions
in this manual shall prevail.
2.3.4 Installation Hardware
Do not use any installation components (for example screws and nuts) other
than what is enclosed with the equipment or recommended by Ericsson.
2.3.5 Installation Procedures and Tools
The installation procedures in this manual must be followed. Make sure that:
• working instructions are followed
• recommended tools are used
• adequate safety devices are used
• the risk of falling and falling objects is known
As a guide to identifying potentially hazardous installation steps, safety symbols
as in Section 2.4 on page 7 are used throughout the manual.

2.4 Safety Symbols and Definitions
This section shows the method used for presenting safety information.
2.4.1 Danger, Warning and Caution
The following three levels, shown in order of urgency, are used.
Danger!
Danger means that an accident may occur if the safety precautions are
neglected. This type of accident is likely to be fatal.
Warning!
Warning means that an accident may occur if the safety precautions are
neglected. This type of accident may be fatal or can cause serious injury.
Caution!
Caution means that an accident may occur if the safety precautions are
neglected. This type of accident may cause minor injury or damage to tangible
property.
2.4.2 Notes
Note: Notes are used to call to the attention of the reader key points that
might otherwise be overlooked.

2.4.3 Electrostatic Discharge

The Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) symbol indicates when external ESD
protection must be used to avoid possible damage to the equipment.
2.5 Hazards
2.5.1 Fire
Warning!
Fire may spread to neighboring rooms. When working on a site you may have
to open cable ducts, channels or access holes, thereby interfering with the
fire sectioning of the building.
• Close cable ducts and fire doors as soon as possible.
• After completing the work, seal the cable ducts according to the regulations
for the building.
• Minimize the amount of flammable materials.
• Avoid storing empty packaging material on the site.
• Use a powder or carbon dioxide type of fire extinguisher due to the electrical
nature of the equipment on the site.

2.5.2 Laser
Laser class: Class 1 (IEC-60825-1)
Warning!
Laser light may be harmful to the eye. The wavelength of the light is not in
the visible length of spectrum.
• Never view the exposed end of a fiber, fiber connector or bulkhead
connector.
• Always ensure that the optical source is off (confirm by using an optical
power meter) before viewing or inspecting any optical port or optical
connector.
• Use an approved microscope when examining any part of an optical
system or optical connector. Never use a magnifying glass or any other
optical device.
• Always consider any fiber, fiber connector or bulkhead connector to have
laser light present unless you have verified the opposite.
• Ensure that the power to the optical source is off before making or breaking
an optical connection.
• Ensure that both ends of the optical cable are terminated before applying
power to the optical source. Never leave an optical connector with laser
light emission from the open end.
• Always insert protective plugs in unused optical ports.
2.5.3 Microwave Radiation
The maximum microwave exposure levels around and in front of the antennas
do not exceed the safety levels specified in international recommendations.
Do not work directly in front of the antenna, since this will disturb or interrupt
the signal.
The antenna feeder should not be touched when the antenna is in operation.
The transmitter should be switched off before dismounting the equipment.

3 System Overview
This section gives a brief overview of the indoor part of the MINI-LINK High
Capacity terminal. For more information, see the MINI-LINK Product Portfolio
Description.
3.1 Introduction
The MINI-LINK terminal consists of an outdoor and an indoor part.

The outdoor part Ais described in the MINI-LINK Point-to-point Outdoor
Installation Manual.
The indoor part Bconsists of a Modem Unit (MMU) and a Traffic Unit (TRU),
which are housed in one common Access Module Magazine (AMM). A fan
unit provides the AMM with cooling. For protected systems, two MMUs and
one TRU are used.
The radio unit is connected to the indoor units with a single coaxial cable C.
A management system is used for operation and maintenance of the terminal.
The integrated control and supervision system continuously monitors the
transmission quality and alarm status.

3.2 Indoor Units
3.2.1 Access Module Magazine (AMM)

The AMM houses the plug-in units and is designed for fitting in a 19" rack or
cabinet. There are two types of AMM:
•A
MM 1U-1 is used for 1+0 terminals and can house one MMU and one TRU.
•A
MM 2U-4 is mainly used for 1+1 or two 1+0 terminals and can house up to
four units; two MMUs and two TRUs.
The plug-in units are inserted into the AMM from the front. The connection
between the plug-in units is made through the backplane of the AMM. All
indicators and external connector interfaces are located on the fronts of the
plug-in units.
Cables are routed to the left and right hand side of the front. The AMM has a
front panel to protect the cables and connectors. Indicators are visible through
the front panel. Tools, used for removal of the plug-in units, are attached to
the inside of the front panel.

3.2.2 Plug-in Units
There are two types of plug-in unit, Modem Unit (MMU) and Traffic Unit (TRU).

The MMU is the indoor interface with the radio unit and contains a
modulator/demodulator. The MMU provides traffic capacity of 155 Mbit/s and is
frequency independent. One MMU per radio unit is required.
The MMU is available in two different types, the MMU 155/16 and MMU 155/128,
providing different bandwidth.
Traffic Unit (TRU)

The main function of the TRU is to generate and terminate an SDH STM-1
or SONET OC-3 signal and transmit it to or receive it from the MMU. It
also contains a protection switching function used for protected terminal
configurations. One TRU per terminal is required.
Besides the main traffic (155 Mbit/s), there are three auxiliary channels; one
channel for wayside traffic and two service channels.
The TRU comes in two versions; the TRU EL. with electrical traffic interface,
and the TRU EL./OPT. with both electrical and optical traffic interfaces.

To guarantee sufficient cooling for the plug-in units, a fan unit is always fitted on
top of the AMM. One fan unit per AMM is required.
The cooling air enters at the front of the AMM, flows between the units and out
through openings at the back of the AMM.
3.2.4 DC Distribution Unit (DDU)

The optional DC Distribution Unit (DDU) is used for distribution of primary DC
power to a maximum of five MMUs or fan units. Each output is protected by an
automatic type fuse (6 A) combined with an ON/OFF switch.
3.3 Management System
Each terminal has an embedded web server which provides management
functions for setup, operation and maintenance of the terminal. All standard
management functions are provided such as fault management, configuration
management, performance monitoring and security management.
The normal way to access the high capacity terminal and its management
system is through the Local Craft Terminal (LCT). The LCT is a standard
laptop PC with the operating system Windows (including a web browser)
installed. The PC is connected on site to the TRU, enabling configuration and
performance monitoring. The entire hop is then monitored by means of the
built-in surveillance channel.
The terminal can also be managed remotely from MINI-LINK Manager.
