COMBINATION CLOCK/TIMER
OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL
The ES-562U/564U is a combination six digit time-of-day Clock / 100 Hour Up/Down Timer. The ES-562U
Clock displays time in 12-hour format; the ES-564U Clock displays time in 24-hour format. The clock and
timer modes operate independently – Clock and Timer operations do not affect each other. When the unit
is powered up it is in Clock mode.
Five control switches are provided, accessible on the top of the case (standard) or on the front panel
(option P). The functions are TIMER, UP/DOWN, SET/STOP, SELECT/RESET and CLOCK. Momentarily
activating the CLOCK or TIMER function will latch the unit into the selected mode, displaying the CLOCK
or TIMER data on the .56” yellow LED display. The other three switches are mode-dependent.
Setting the Clock is accomplished by holding down the CLOCK button and using the SET and SELECT
buttons. Hold the CLOCK button down and press the SELECT button. This causes the Hours-digits to
flash and allows them to be set by pressing the SET button until the hours agree with the time being set.
Continue holding the CLOCK button down and press the SELECT button again, enabling the Minutes-
digits to be set in the same manner. The same procedure applies for setting the Seconds-digits and they
should be set slightly ahead of real time. (Seconds are “synchronized” after the Calendar is set.)
Set the Calendar to the correct date in the same manner. The Calendar should be set to the correct date
because the units automatically correct for daylight savings time. To turn this feature off, refer to the layout
on page 6. Month is set first, followed by day and then year. After the date is set, press the SELECT
button one more time to stop the digits from flashing. At this time, the seconds can be synchronized to real
time by pressing and holding the CLOCK and SET buttons until real time matches the time set on the
display. When the SET button is released, the unit begins counting from that point. Errors made during the
setting procedure can easily be corrected by selecting the digit-pairs in need of correction. Set them, as
above, by pressing the SET button until the proper number is displayed. Continue selecting until all digits
are stable (not flashing).
The TIMER can be preset in a similar fashion. Press and release the TIMER button. If the TIMER is
counting, press the SET/STOP button to stop it. The timer is preset just like the CLOCK, except that the
TIMER button needs to be continuously pressed while setting. In order to store a manually preset time in
memory, either the UP button or the DOWN button must be pressed after setting the timer to the desired
preset time.
The UP/DOWN switch starts the TIMER counting up or down. The SET/STOP button, if pressed alone,
stops the TIMER. The SELECT/RESET switch, if pushed alone, acts as a reset/preset switch. The first
time it is pressed, the timer is reset to 00:00:00. If pressed again (within 5 seconds) the timer is set to the
last manually preset time. If the timer was counting up or down before being reset, it continues to count in
the same direction.
If the unit is ordered with option “R”, remote control inputs are provided on a rear-mounted 9-pin
connector. A short to ground is required to activate the desired function. The optional relay contact closure
on the Hour or Hour & Half-Hour is also accessible on the connector. The contacts are rated at 10 watts
maximum resistive load, 500 mA maximum switching current.
SPECIFICATIONS
Electrical: Input Voltage 117 VAC, 50/60 Hz, 5 watts max.
Mechanical: Etched Aluminum case 2.5” High x 8” Wide x 6” Deep

OPTIONS
“C” -When this option (Crystal Timebase) is specified, a trimmer is included for greater accuracy.
The crystal (.002% accuracy) is factory calibrated to provide an accuracy of 2-3 seconds per
week and can also be field adjusted for greater accuracy.
“D” -When this option is specified, a standard 6' remote cable which attaches to the rear-mounted
9-Pin connector is provided. All function controls (TIMER, UP/DOWN, SET/STOP,
SELECT/RESET and TIMER) are mounted on a 1/8" clear anodized aluminum switch plate.
Extra cable length is available upon request.
“HR” -When this option "HR" (Hour or Hour & Half-Hour) is specified, a relay contact closure occurs
on the Hour or on the Hour & Half-Hour (CLOCK time). The contacts are rated at 10 watts
maximum resistive load, 500mA maximum switching current. The contact closure is accessible
on the rear-mounted DB9 connector (see page 3). NOTE: Unless otherwise specified, Option
"HR" includes a closure on the Hour & Half- Hour. A jumper on the PCB allows the Half-Hour
feature to be defeated.
“J” - When this option is specified, input voltage is 220 VAC, 50/60Hz.
“P” - When this option is specified, the unit is housed in an Etched aluminum rackmount enclosure
– 1.75” high x 19” wide x 10” deep.
“P2” - When this option is specified, a 19” rackmount panel allows any two units with a “P2” option to
be mounted side by side.
“Q” - When this option is specified, the unit is housed in a console mount enclosure with an etched
aluminum front panel – 3.5” high x 9” wide x 8” deep.
“R” - When this option is specified, all functions are accessible via a 9-Pin connector (see page 3).
“UL” - When this option is specified, the unit is supplied with a UL approved wall mount power
supply.
“W” - When this option is specified, the unit is supplied with a three wire line cord.
“ESE” - When this option (Serial Time Code output) is specified, the Time Code output is accessible
via a rear BNC connector. The time code output is the same as what is currently being
displayed.

CIRCUIT DESCRIPTION
The ES-562/564U is based on a single micro-processor chip, timer IC, Z4. A +5 volt DC supply consisting
of T1, diodes D1-D3, capacitors C1-C6 and regulator Z2 power it. T1 provides 6 VAC to the voltage
doubler circuit composed of D1-D2, C1-C4. Approximately +12 to +15 volts DC is developed across C1
and C3, which is regulated to 5 volts by Z2. This is used to power the clock/timer logic. A separate 6 VDC
supply is used to supply the segment driver chip Z6. IC Z4 provides all timing and control functions and
generates serial control signals for the display driver chips, Z6 and Z7. The display operates in multiplex
mode. Z6 and Z7 receive segment and digit drive data from Z4 via a data line (Z4 pin 28), a clock line (Z4
pin 27) and a strobe line (Z4 pin 26). A 50 or 60 Hz clock signal is taken from T1, logic-level converted by
Q1 and used for the counting timebase. Z4 also provides the optional Serial Timer Code, which is buffered
by IC Z3.
