Introduction
This guide describes the Extron PowerCage411 Series and how to install, configure,
and operate the enclosure and its optional FOX3T201PC, FOX3T301PC, and
FOX3T311PC transmitter boards. This section of the guide covers the following topics:

Guide Overview
This guide describes the PowerCage411 enclosure and FOX3 PowerCage transmitters and
provides instructions for installing all components of the system. In this guide, the following
terms are used:
• The terms “FOX3 PowerCage transmitter”, “transmitter”, and “boards” refer to any
FOX3T301PC, FOX3T311PC, and FOX3T201PC transmitter models.
• The terms “PowerCage 411”, “PowerCage”, and “enclosure” refer to the
PowerCage411 Modular Power Enclosure for FOX3 Fiber Optic Extenders.
NOTE: Observe all applicable building codes and local ordinances when installing the
enclosure.
Product Description
PowerCage411
The PowerCage411 is a 1U high, rack-mountable, 4-slot enclosure with vents, fans, and
two integrated power supplies that supports a wide range of Extron fiber optic transmitter
boards. It provides an efficient way to power and mount multiple transmitters and receivers.
It features both RS-232, Ethernet, and USB control and a front panel LCD screen.
A PowerCage411 system can include any combination of PowerCage411 fiber optic
(FOX3) boards mounted within the PowerCage enclosure. Each optional board operates
independently of the others. This is an integrated system of individual transmitters and
receivers, not a matrixed system.
Transmitters
The FOX3 T 301 PC, FOX3 T 311 PC, and FOX3 T 201 PC transmitters are modular boards
designed for a single slot in the PowerCage 411 enclosure. They are hot-swappable and
provide HDMI video, audio, USB, and control signal extension over fiber optic cables.

continuous invisible light, which may be harmful to the eyes; use with caution.

Fiber Cable Transmission Modes
The boards are further categorized by the type of fiber optic cable, multimode (MM) or
singlemode (SM), which define the effective range of transmission.
• Multimode — Long distance, up to 500 m (1640 feet) (depending on the fiber cable)
• Singlemode — Very long distance, up to 20 km (12.4 miles)
NOTE: Multimode and singlemode boards are physically and functionally identical, with
the exception of the effective range of transmission.

System Compatibility
FOX3 endpoints with the Uncompressed Video LinkLicense passes uncompressed
4K @ 60Hz video signals to FOX3 endpoints that also have the Uncompressed Video
LinkLicense.
NOTE: The FOX3 products are not compatible with legacy FOX, FOXBOX, FOX II,
PowerCage401 FOX, or PowerCage 1600 FOX products. For a list of compatible
products, go to www.extron.com.
Control Methods
To configure and control the enclosure or transmitter use one of the following methods:
• Enclosure menu system (see PowerCage 411 Menu starting on page24)
• SIS commands (see SIS Configuration and Control starting on page31)
• Extron Product Configuration Software (see Configuration Software starting on
page45)
NOTES:
• To configure and control the enclosure, see the PowerCage411 Series PCS Help
File available in the PCS module.
• An Extron Insider account is required to download and use Product Configuration
Software (PCS). Contact an Extron support representative, to obtain an Insider
Account.
Extron LinkLicense
An Extron LinkLicense unlocks features that add convenience, expand system options, and
enhance the capabilities of Extron products. Each LinkLicense can be purchased separately
from the FOX3 device and activated as the need arises. A LinkLicense can be uploaded
using Extron Toolbelt software (see Toolbelt Help File for details and Software/Firmware
Installation on page45 to download Toolbelt).
NOTE: A user must have an Insider Account to download and use ToolBelt Software.
Contact an Extron support representative, to obtain an Insider Account.
LinkLicense upgrades available for the FOX3 transmitter and receiver include the following:
Uncompressed Video Upgrade —
• This LinkLicense is enabled once and lasts for the life of the product.
• Allows the FOX3 endpoints to pass uncompressed 4K @ 60 Hz video on the second
SFP module, enabling the highest video performance.

Application Diagrams
The FOX3 PowerCage fiber optic boards are compatible with FOX3 receivers. They can be
used in point-to-point applications or in combination with FOX3 Series matrix switchers (see
figure1 and figure2 on page5 for diagrams of typical applications).
Figure 1 shows four FOX3 transmitters in a PowerCage411 enclosure. One transmitter is
connected directly to a scaling receiver for a typical point-to-point application.

PowerCage411 Enclosure
• Space-saving design with a compact, 1U rack-mountable enclosure —
Streamlines installation by reducing the space required in racks and under desks for AV
signal extenders and eliminates the need for an individual power supply for each unit.
• Accommodates up to four modules — Provides a convenient, configurable rack-
mount solution for long-haul signal extension and flexibility for future system growth.
• Modular, field-upgradeable, and hot-swappable design — Additional modules
may be added at any time for quick and easy upgrading or expansion. Hot-swappable
components allow the user to replace modules or a power supply at any time without
the need to power down the system. This is especially useful for mission-critical
applications that require continuous system operation.
• Ethernet monitoring and control — Enables control and proactive monitoring over a
LAN, WAN, or the Internet using standard TCP/IP protocols.
• Dual redundant and hot-swappable power supplies — Primary and back-up

FOX3 PC Transmitters
• The FOX3 T 201 PC extends HDMI, stereo audio, and RS 232 control signals
very long distances over fiber optic cabling.
• The FOX3 T 301 PC extends HDMI, USB, stereo audio, and RS-232 control
signals very long distances over fiber optic cabling.
• The FOX3 T 311 PC extends HDMI video, USB HID, stereo audio, and RS-232
control signals very long distances over fiber optic cabling.
• Supports mathematically lossless 4K video up to 4096x2160 at 60 Hz with a
4:4:4 chroma sampling over one fiber.
• Supports uncompressed 4K video up to 4096x2160 at 60 Hz with a 4:4:4 chroma
sampling over two fibers.
• Supported HDMI 2.0 specification features include data rates up to 18 Gbps,
Deep Color up to 12-bit, and 3D.

Hot-swappable components allow the user to replace modules at any time without
the need to power down the system. This is especially useful for mission-critical

• Supports USB 2.0 to 1.0 devices and USB 3.0 devices that can operate at USB
2.0 data rates of up to 480 Mbps (FOX3 T 301 PC) — Provides USB extension,
allowing connection to peripheral devices over the same fiber optic cable as video and
audio.
• Device class filtering on USB HID port restricts the range of device types
to HID (FOX3 T 311 PC and FOX3 T 301 PC) — Device class filtering prevents
unauthorized downloading or uploading of content via the USB port in secure
environments. The USB HID port is configured at the factory, such that device class
filtering cannot be removed or altered in the field.
• Buffered HDMI input loop out — Local HDMI output provides signals for a local

• Key Minder continuously verifies HDCP compliance for quick, reliable
switching — Key Minder authenticates and maintains continuous HDCP encryption
between input and output devices to ensure quick and reliable switching in professional
AV environments, while enabling simultaneous distribution of a single source to multiple
displays.
• EDID Minder automatically manages EDID communication between connected
devices — EDID Minder ensures that all sources power up properly and reliably output
content for display.
• Audio embedding — Analog audio signals are converted to digital HDMI audio.
• Bidirectional RS 232 signal transmission over fiber optic cabling for AV device
control — Bidirectional RS 232 control pass-through enables a remote display to
be controlled without the need for additional cabling. Two fibers are required for

Heed the following safety information when installing or servicing the PowerCage system:
CAUTION: Shock Hazard. Disconnect both power supply cords before servicing.

The boards and power supplies are hot-swappable and can be installed or replaced at any
time. However, the most convenient way to proceed with initial installation is as follows:

AAnalog audio input — Connect an analog audio source to the 3.5 mm tip-ring-sleeve
(TRS) port (see Analog Audio Connection on page14 for wiring instructions).
BRS-232 port — Connect a control device or controlled device to this 3-pole captive
screw port for pass-through RS-232 serial control (see RS-232 Connection on
page15).
CHDMI input — Connect video sources to the HDMI inputs.
DHDMI Loop Out — If desired, connect a local monitor to this HDMI output.
NOTE: Use Extron HDMI LockIt Cable Lacing Brackets to secure HDMI cables to
the device (see HDMI Connection on page14).
EUSB HID Host port (FOX3 T 301/311 PC only) — Connect a USB type A to B cable
between this USB type B port and the USB port of a host. The USB HID port is used
only for a mouse or keyboard.
FUSB 2.0 port (FOX3 T 301 PC only) — Connect a USB type A to B cable between
this USB type B port and the USB port of a host. The USB 2.0 port is used for thumb
drives, cameras, keyboards, a mouse, CAC reader, and such devices.
GFiber connector and LED indicators — Connect a fiber optic cable between fiber
ports on compatible devices. Each fiber port is split into a Tx (OUT) port and an Rx (IN)
port (see wiring instructions and figure6 on page12).
WARNING: Potential risk of severe injury. The units output continuous
invisible light (Class 1 rated), which may be harmful to the eyes; use with caution.
Plug the attached dust cap into the optical transceiver when the fiber optic cable
is unplugged.

• Ensure the proper fiber cables for the transmitter and receiver pair are used.
Typically, singlemode fiber has a yellow jacket and multimode cable has an
orange or aqua jacket.
• See figure6 for fiber cable connections. Connect the transmitter to a receiver
in one of three ways:
• One way (transmitter to receiver) only, connect transmitter Outputs A (1) to
receiver Inputs A (1).
• Two way (transmitter to receiver and return), connect transmitter Outputs
A (1) to receiver Inputs A (1) and connect transmitter Outputs A (2) to
receiver Inputs A (2).
• Output B is available to transmit a 4K @ 60 Hz uncompressed signal when
