PowerCage™ FOX AEX 104 and
PowerCage™ FOX II AEX 104 • Setup Guide
This guide provides instructions for an experienced installer to set up and operate the Extron PowerCage FOX AEX 104 and
PowerCage FOX II AEX 104 Fiber Audio Extractors. The extractors are double boards for the PowerCage 1600 enclosure
that extract audio from ber optic systems to be routed to ampliers or DSP processors. The extractors can be implemented
anywhere in a ber optic system where local audio-only outputs are required. This may include the input or output side of a ber
matrix system or in a point-to-point application between two ber optic endpoints.
CLASS 1 LASER PRODUCT, see the PowerCage FOX AEX 104 and PowerCage FOX II AEX 104 User Guide at
www.extron.com.
WARNING: Do not look into the rear panel ber optic cable connectors or into the ber optic cables themselves.
Avertissement: Ne regardez pas dans les connecteurs de câble bre optique sur le panneau arrière ou dans les câbles
bre optique eux-mêmes.
NOTES:
• The PowerCage FOX AEX 104 is compatible with all Extron FOX Series products except for FOX 3G HD-SDI,
PowerCage FOX 3G HD-SDI and FOX 3G DVC models. It is not compatible with FOX II Series products.
• The PowerCage FOX II AEX 104 is compatible with all Extron FOX and FOX II Series products except for
FOX 3G HD-SDI, PowerCage FOX 3G HD-SDI and FOX 3G DVC models.
The extractors consist of four audio extraction points. Each extraction point includes a Tx and Rx ber optic port in a ber optic
connector with corresponding LED indicators and a 3.5 mm, 5-pole captive screw audio output connector.
Installation
Step 1 — Select the Input Data Rate.
The DIP switch on the main board switches the extractor between 2G and 4G input data rates. Using an Extron Tweeker
or small screwdriver, move DIP switch 2 up (On position) for 2G input data rates or down (Off position) for 4G input data
rates. DIP switch 1 is a spare. The default rate is 4G (Off or down).
ATTENTION:
• Ensure all ber extenders within the system are compatible with the selected input data rate.
• Assurez-vous que tous les extendeurs bres dans le système soient compatibles avec le débit de données d’entrée
sélectionné.
NOTE: 2G and 4G data rates apply to all inputs. These selectable rates are not for individual inputs.
Step 2 — Install the Board.
ATTENTION:
• Use ESD precautions when installing a board to avoid damaging it.
Keep the board in the anti-static bag until it is needed. Use proper
grounding techniques during installation.
NOTE: The extractors are hot-swappable; they can be installed or
removed without turning off or disconnecting the power to the
PowerCage enclosure.
a. If applicable, remove as many blank plates or previously installed boards from the PowerCage enclosure as necessary to t
the extractor.
b. With the connectors facing away from the PowerCage enclosure, align the slide posts of the extractor with the desired slots
on the PowerCage enclosure.
c. Carefully slide the board into the slot and push it rmly into place.
d. Tighten the screws to secure the extractor to the enclosure. Use a tool if necessary.

Step 3 — For Each Desired Extraction Point, Connect Inputs and Outputs.
NOTES:
• Each extraction point works independently from other extraction points.
• Ensure the proper ber cable is used. Typically, singlemode ber optic cables have a yellow jacket and multimode ber
optic cables have an orange or aqua jacket.
• Transmission of HDMI or DisplayPort video with HDCP content requires a return ber optic cable from the receiving
device to the transmitting device.

NOTE: Use the ports on the same connector that is connected to the extractor.
Indications
Power LED indicator — Lights green when power is applied to the extractor.
Tx Link and Rx Link LED indicators — For each ber connector, the Tx Link and Rx Link LED indicators light when the
associated link is transmitting or receiving light (not necessarily that data is encoded in the optical light).
