Thanks for using a FakeTV. You need not restrict its use to vacations. You can
simply leave FakeTV set up, discouraging would-be burglars every time you are
out for the evening. Despite the very bright output, and thanks to the recent
advancements in LED technology, FakeTV draws less power than a night light.
INTERNAL LIGHT SENSOR: Most convenient is to use the light sensor built into
FakeTV. If it gets dark early (say, around five pm), place the switch on the FakeTV
unit in the DUSK + 7 HRS position If it gets dark later (say, around nine) use the
DUSK + 4 HRS position. One or two LED's will turn on, depending on switch
setting. FakeTV will not turn on until it is really, really dark (0.5 lux), because it is
only effective when it is dark outside. If a light on a timer, or some other light
source illuminates the room with the FakeTV unit, then FakeTV will not turn on.

CHECK IT OUT. Take a look outside when it is dark, and FakeTV is on. Make
sure you can see the light from FakeTV, but not the FakeTV unit itself. It's a good
idea to try out FakeTV a couple of days while the house is still occupied, so you
know that it is coming on at the times you want.
The diffuser lens built into FakeTV prevents the light output from ever being
dangerous - it is less concentrated than, say, an LED flashlight. A
void staring at
FakeTV directly - it is not healthy to stare at any bright light source.
EXTERNAL TIMERS: If for any reason you wish to have the FakeTV on at some
times other than those provided by the light sensor, you may turn the FakeTV unit
on, and plug the AC Adapter in the timer. Alternatively, you may give the
appearance of a television left on all the time by simply leaving the switch on
FakeTV in the on position and plugging the adaptor in an unswitched outlet.
TO USE FAKETV:
PLACEMENT: Place the FakeTV unit on a table or other suitable horizontal
surface, using the illustrations as a guide. Plug the AC adaptor into the FakeTV
unit, and into an outlet.

Helpful Hints: FakeTV is only part of your home security picture. When you
leave your home unoccupied for any period of time, for example when you go
away on holiday, stop your newspaper and milk deliveries.
Get to know your
neighbours and/or join a Neighbourhood Watch Scheme. For total security and
peace of mind consider fitting an Intruder Alarm.
Neither a FakeTV nor any other occupancy simulation system can guarantee
you will not have a break in.
Still put a light on a timer. A lamp on a timer is easily seen from the street,
and makes a great "occupied" first impression. But, burglars know that timers
are commonplace, and thus timers are not enough by themselves. FakeTV
works great in combination with a lamp on a timer in a different room. It sends
the message: "somebody is home, and they are watching television right now."
Be sure outdoor lighting does not wash-out the light from FakeTV.
FakeTV
is not effective when used in a part of the home where constant bright exterior
lights wash out the light from FakeTV Pick a window on a dark side of the
house for FakeTV.
When you look at a real TV, you see images on the screen. But when you look
at the light it casts in a room, the light from the screen melds to a uniform glow
that changes with the changing images on the television. FakeTV's built-in
computer controls its super-bright LEDs to produce light of varying intensity and
color that light up a room just like a real television does. The light effects of real
television programming - scene changes, camera pans, fades, flicks, swells, on-
screen motion, and more, are all faithfully simulated by FakeTV Just like a real
TV, FakeTV fills a room with color changes, both subtle and dramatic, in
thousands of possible shades. Like real television programming, FakeTV is
constantly shifting among more and less dynamic periods, more vivid and more
monochromatic, and brighter and darker scenes. FakeTV is completely
unpredictable, and it never repeats.
The effect is uncanny. From outside the home, FakeTV is essentially
indistinguishable from a real television. Test subjects were not able to tell if it
was FakeTV or the real thing. FACT: 90% of burglars will not enter a property
that appears to be occupied.
Troubleshooting FakeTV will not turn on with light sensor. The light sensor on
FakeTV will not turn it on until it is almost pitch black-0.5 lux, for the truly technical.
So, do not expect FakeTV to come on when it is light outside, even with the
shades drawn. A streetlight, or a light on a timer, or some other light source can
also prevent FakeTV from turning on.
FakeTV will sometimes come on at odd times. Fluctuations in light levels in the
early morning can cause FakeTV to turn on-but this is no real problem. It is not
unusual for people to watch TV in the morning.
FakeTV turns off when I turn bright lights on in the room. This is by design, in
the green spirit of not using any more electricity than needed. FakeTV is a truly
environmentally friendly product-it is a lot more effective, and uses a lot less
energy, than a second lamp on a timer!
The best room for seeing FakeTV from the outside does not actually have a
real TV in it. That does not matter! FakeTV will make it look like there is a television
in that room, misleading potential intruders.
I can see the FakeTV unit from outside. Reposition the FakeTV unit!
The light from FakeTV can be hard to see from outside the house. Expect the
effect to be subtle, but very convincing. FakeTV is about as bright as a typical 27"
LCD TV-perfectly simulating the sort of TV you might find in a bedroom. A burglar
will almost always completely circle a property before breaking in. They are looking
for the easiest point of entry, and looking for telltale signs of life. FakeTV, with its
constantly changing intensity and color, makes a very persuasive occupancy
simulation, even if you have to look for it. It looks "alive." Few burglars will enter a
house they think is occupied.
The best FakeTV applications are second story windows, where you can see the
light from FakeTV with no shade, but cannot see the FakeTV unit. For first story
installations you will generally need window coverings to prevent prowlers from
seeing in. Blinds or drapes need to be translucent, or adjusted to allow a little light
through. It may even be worth buying an inexpensive light-filtering shade, just to get
the best occupancy simulation out of FakeTV.
