Faronics Core
This section introduces Faronics Core and explains its components.
About Faronics Core
Faronics Core provides enterprise deployment and management capabilities for Faronics’
software solutions. Faronics Core also allows the monitoring and management of multiple
workstations from a central location. Faronics Core displays the current status of managed
workstations and allows commands to be applied to one or more of those workstations. Faronics
Core’s basic functionality is extended by installing Product Loadins. These Loadins extend the
functionality of Faronics Core with product-specific status, actions and reports.
Faronics Core has the following components:
• Core Console (UI Tier) — The user interface used to manage and monitor Core Servers and
workstations. A single instance of Core Console can connect to multiple Core Servers.
• Core Server (Logic Tier) — The management of workstations, processing of tasks and
communication between Core Console and workstations is done by the Core Server.
• Core Database (Data Tier) — The database stores the workstation list and information about
the workstation.
• Core Agent — The Core Agent, that is installed on the workstation, enables communication
between the workstation and the Core Server

About Product Loadins
Faronics Core implements basic management functionality. Its primary role is to serve as a
common platform for the management of other Faronics products. This is accomplished through
the installation of Product Loadins. A Product Loadin is a software library that adds new
product-specific functionality to Faronics Core.
Products that use Faronics Core consist of two main components: Product Loadin and workstation
component. The workstation component will be the actual product-specific features installed on
the workstation. The Product Loadin is installed on the Core Server and allows you to manage the
Product Loadins installed on the various workstations.
The system requirements for Faronics Core and its components is described in the following
section.

Requirements for Faronics Core
This section explains the requirements for the Core Console, Core Server, Core Database and the
remote workstations managed by Faronics Core.
Core Console Requirements
The following system requirements must be met to successfully install Core Console:
• 32- or 64-bit editions of Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7
• 32- or 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008
• The console also requires Microsoft .NET 3.5 SP1 and Microsoft MMC 3.0

The following system requirements and hardware requirements must be met to successfully
install Core Server:

Core Database Requirements
The following system requirements must be met to successfully install Core Database:
• Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP2 or
• Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP2 (all editions) or
• Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express
Workstation Requirements
The Core Agent can be installed on any computer running the following Microsoft Windows
operating systems:
•Windows2000SP4
• 32- or 64-bit editions of Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista and Windows 7
• 32- or 64-bit editions of Windows Server 2003 and Windows Server 2008
The Core Agent requires that Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 (IE6), or greater, be installed.
Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express is included with Faronics Core Console and is
perfectly acceptable for deployment sizes of 500 machines or less. Deployments of
500 to 1,000 machines can use the Express edition but may experience
performance issues. For deployments over 1,000 computers it is highly
recommended to use the Standard or Enterprise versions of SQL Server.
On Windows Server 2003 and Windows XP 64-bit, the WMI Windows Installer
Provider is required but is not installed by default. To install this Windows
component, select the WMI Windows Installer Provider component found under
Add or Remove Programs > Add/Remove Windows Components > Management
and Monitoring Tools > Details.

Advanced Features in Faronics Core
This section briefly explains the advanced features in Faronics Core.
Scalability
Faronics Core is a highly scalable enterprise solution. By adding multiple Core Servers and Core
Databases, Faronics Core can be scaled both horizontally and vertically across the enterprise.
Security
Faronics Core uses Windows Authentication and Microsoft Security Certificates to ensure secure
communication between:
• Core Console and Core Server
• Core Server and Workstations
• Core Server and Core Database
Reporting
Reporting is built into Faronics Core Console. As a result there is no application footprint
required for a separate reporting module and there is no impact on your SQL Server licensing.

Power Save
Faronics Power Save delivers PC power management that does not interfere with user or IT needs.
Power Save keeps computers running when users need them, accurately determines when
computers are inactive so they can be powered down, and can prove its rapid
return-on-investment through network-wide power consumption and savings reports.
Power Save's non-disruptive PC power management analyzes CPU, disk, keyboard, mouse, and
network activity, as well as application status, before taking computer power management actions.
It is also available for both Windows and Mac computers. With an average savings of $50 per
computer per year for every computer deployed, Power Save is the ultimate PC power
management software solution for desktop and laptop computers.

Prerequisites
The Power Save Loadin requires Faronics Core. For more information about Faronics Core, refer
to the section Faronics Core.
System Requirements
Power Save on the workstation computer requires any of the following operating systems:
• Windows 2000 SP4 (32-bit)
• Windows XP SP2 (32-bit or 64-bit)
• Windows Vista (32-bit or 64 bit)
• Windows 7 (32-bit or 64 bit)
It is highly recommended that all components be installed using a Windows Administrator
account.

Resource Usage
This section explains the resources used by Faronics Power Save.
Footprint
Faronics Power Save and Faronics Core have the following footprint on the computer where Core
Console is installed:
Communications
Communication between Core Server, Core Console, and the Core Agent is accomplished using the
SOAP protocol. One of the key benefits of SOAP is that it allows for communication between
applications running on different operating systems, with different technologies and
programming languages.
Bandwidth requirements are low since unnecessary network traffic is eliminated. For example, a
Faronics Power Save deployment using the default settings would generate:
• First day traffic of 2.5 KB between the console and the workstation
• Subsequent daily traffic of 0.3 KB with the same settings applied
