2.1‐Overview
Thischaptercontainsimportantsafetyinstructions.Youmustread,understand,andcomplywithallof

2.2‐SafetyWarningsandCautions
•PTU‐E46installationandsetupshouldbeonlybeperformedbyqualifiedpersonnel.
•Theinstallationmustcomplywithallapplicablecodes(suchasbuildingcodes,marinesafetycodes,
etc.).
•Theinstallationmustbefreeofobstructionsthroughouttheentirerangeofpan‐tiltmotion.When
planningtheinstallation,makesuretotakethepayloadintoaccounttoensurethatthePTU‐E46and
payloadremainunobstructedatalltimes.
•Allmountingmethodsandmaterialsmustbecapableofsupportingatleastfourtimesthecombined
weightofthePTU‐E46,mountedpayloads,andcabling.
•Corrosion‐resistanthardware(suchasstainlesssteelscrews)mustbeusedforalloutdoorinstalla‐
tions.

ThePTU‐E46includesanintegratedcontrollerthatcanbeaccessedusingaWeb/Ethernetinterface.The
controllerwillalsoacceptcontrolcommandsfromanyhostcomputeroveraserial(RS‐232orRS‐485)
connection.Thebasicconnectionsare:

ThePTU‐E46containsaWeb‐basedinterfacethatallowsyoutotestandprogramvariousfunctions.This
interfaceisaccessibleviatheEthernetconnectiononthebreakoutcable.
Toconnect,poweron,andtestthePTU‐E46usingtheEthernetconnectionandWebinterface:
1. ConnectoneendofanRJ‐45EthernetcabletothePTU‐E46controller,andthenconnecttheother
endofthecabletothehostcomputer,eitherdirectlyorthrougharouter/hub.
2. ConnectapowersourcetothePTU‐E46,makingsuretoincorporateareadilyaccessiblepowerdis‐
connect(suchasapowerstrip)toallowsafepowerremovalfromthesystem.SeeSection4.3.
3. EnsurethatthePTU‐E46iscleartomoveinbothaxes(panandtilt)withouthittinganyobstructions
beforeapplyingpower.
4. PoweronthePTU‐E46.Bydefault,thePTU‐E46willbeginacalibrationsequencethatwillcauseitto
movefromitscurrentpositiontothecenter(0)positionsinbothaxes.
5. LaunchaWebbrowser.ThePTU‐E46supportsmodernversionsoftheMicrosoftInternetExplorer®,
Mozilla®Firefox®,andGoogle®Chrome®browserswithJavaScriptenabled.

4‐Installation&Setup
ThissectiondescribespropermechanicalandelectricalPTU‐E46installation.
4.1‐MountingtheUnit
Thebasicmountingpatternusestwo#1/4‐20socket‐headcapscrewsina0.75”(19.05mm)sidebyside
pattern.Bothmountingscrewsmustbeused,andthemountmustbestrongenoughtosupportthe
combinedloadofthePTU‐E46unit,payload,andadditionalforcesexertedonthesystem(suchaswind,
Gforces,etc.).Agoodruleofthumbisthatthemountmustbecapableofsupportingatleastfourtimes
thecombinedweightofthePTU‐E46andpayload.Forexample,amountforaPTU‐E46witha15lb.pay‐
loadmustbeabletosupportatleast104lbs.

ThePTU‐E46requiresanunregulated12‐30VDCpowersourcecapableof17continuouspeakwatts.
•FormaximumPTU‐E46performance,usethehighestmotorvoltagewithintheallowablerange.
•ForthequietestandsmoothestPTU‐E46operation,youcanusealowermotorvoltage,suchas
24VDC.
Alternativepowersourcesthatcansupplyatleast17Wcontinuouscanbeusedbyattachinga2.1/
5.5mmcoaxialconnectorcabletoasuitableDCpowersource(e.g.,batterypower,vehiclepower,oran
AC/DCconverter).Inordertoachievethehighestpan‐tiltunitperformance,usethehighestmotorvolt‐
agewithintheallowablerange.Toachievethequietestpan‐tiltoperation,usealowermotorvoltage
(e.g.,12VDC).Operationat12VDClimitsthehighestunloadedpan‐tiltspeedtoabout2/3theratedmax‐
imumspeed(i.e.,600°/secondforthePTU‐E46‐17,and60°/secondforthePTU‐E46‐70).

IfyouareprovidingyourownDCpowersource,theneither:
•Thepowersourcemustneversupplymorethan3Aofcurrent.
•Youmustadda3Afast‐blowfuseinserieswithyourDCpowersource.
Forexample,whenconnectingtoavehiclebatteryorlighterplug,youmustfusetheincomingDC
source.Failuretoproperlyfuseyourinputpowersourcecouldcauseoverloadingofinternalprotection
devices,poseasafetyhazard,orvoidproductwarranties.
