Intended use, intended users and operation of the device
Intended use
The Robot Interface is a liftmechanism to be used in combination with a robotmanipulator. The
device is intended to be mounted on the side of an electrical wheelchair.
The device makes it possible to lower the retract position of the robotmanipulator so it can fit
under the worksheet or armrest of the electrical wheelchair. It is designed for people with very
limited muscle force to help in Activities of Daily Living (ADL).
Intended users
The intended users of the Robot Interface are users with a robotmanipulator with the need
for the possibility to park the robotmanipulator out of the way. Users who have a severe
impairment in the arm and hand functionality:
1 Persons challenged by severe muscular weakness resulting in the inability to perform
essential Activities of Daily Living (ADL) activities including eating, drinking, facial care,
computer use. Advanced dynamic arm supports could not compensate for the muscle
weakness.
2 Persons challenged by muscle functioning;
3 Combination of these.
Operation of the device
Robot Interface consists of a liftarm, a control box and a battery power cable. The liftarm is
controlled by the controlbox based on a user input device of a “Handschakelaar” from Focal
Meditech or a 3,5mm switch. The power for the Robot Interface is retrieved from the control
box via a cable through the liftarm. In the liftarm there is also an extension cable for the data
connector of the robotmanipulator. The joystick can be connected on this cable. The control
box is available in two versions: a single switch version and a two switch version. In the single
switch version the liftarm toggles between moving up and down when the button is pressed.
In the two switch version there is a separate button for the upwards movement and one for
moving downwards.
The device stops automatically when the liftarm reaches the highest or lowest position or
when the actuator draws too much current.
Usage of the device
The Robot Interface will move the robotmanipulator away from the user to minimize
the chance of the robotmanipulator being an obstacle en increase safety when the
robotmanipulator not being used.
Warning: If the user experiences problems using the Robot Interface, please contact
Focal Meditech or a healthcare professional as soon as possible.

12 13
Removing / mounting a robotmanipulator on the Robot Interface
•To remove the robotmanipulator from the Robot Interface, first switch off the
robotmanipulator. Then disconnect the power and the data cable. If they are disconnected
loosen the “mounting bolt” at the end of the Robot Interface. After loosening the bolt,
take the robotmanipulator with both hands and lift the robotmanipulator from the Robot
Interface.
•To mount the robotmanipulator on the Robot Interface, put the robotmanipulator on the
Robot Interface. Then tighten the “mounting bolt” at the end of the Robot Interface then
connect the power cable and data cable if they are connected switch on the power.
Swing away the Robot Interface lift mechanism
•To swing away the Robot Interface, pull the “Lift lock knob” with one hand. While the knob is
pulled out swing away the Robot Interface with the other hand.
•To swing the Robot Interface back to the wheelchair, move the Robot Interface towards the
wheelchair until you hear a “click”.
Danger: Do not control the Robot Interface or drive the wheelchair if the lift mechanism
didn’t come back fully to its locking position. In that case contact Focal Meditech for
further instructions.
Power consumption
It is hard to say how long the Robot Interface can be operated on fully charged wheelchair
batteries. This depends on:
•Capacity of batteries
•Quality of batteries (aging, number of charge cycles)
•Power consumption of other equipment on wheelchair (driving actuators, adjustments, etc.)

On the Focal display there are 2 type of icons:
Menu icons
There are 3 menu’s on the Focal display. With these icons the user can move to another menu:
Joystick backwards Park menu
Move menu
Extra function menu
To enter the menu press on the function switch.
Action icons
To select the next icon in a row, press the function switch
To select the previous icon in a row, hold the function switch
Controls
There are 3 possible ways to control the Robot Interface. This depends on the user capabilities
and the type of wheelchair control system. All control systems require a Focal Display to give
feedback of the current mode. The control systems are:
Mini joystick Focal
The Mini joystick Focal is a small joystick that is based on detecting force changes. This makes
it able to control with almost no movements. The joystick contains a buzzer to give a sound
that indicates that it is operative. The speed of the movements is proportional to the joystick
input. This means the higher force that is applied to the joystick the higher the speed is of the
movements.
Large joystick Focal
The Large joystick Focal is a large joystick that is based on detecting force changes. This makes
it able to control with almost no movements. The joystick contains a buzzer to give a sound
that indicates that it is operative. The speed of the movements is proportional to the joystick
input. This means the higher force that is applied to the joystick the higher the speed is of the
movements.
Wheelchair joystick R-net
The Wheelchair joystick R-net makes uses of the joystick of the Wheelchair. In contradiction
with the previous control systems, the speed of the movements cannot be regulated by
the joystick. The robot will move at a fixed speed no matter if the user makes only a small
excitation of the joystick.
Menu control
The menu of the Mini joystick Focal and the Large joystick Focal are the same. The menu of the
Wheelchair joystick R-net is a little bit different due to the fact that this is not a proportional
control. In the next paragraphs the controls will be mentioned as:
•Joystick Focal (referring to Mini joystick Focal and Large joystick Focal)
•Joystick R-net (referring to Wheelchair joystick R-net)

16 17
Manual lift control
With this function the liftmechanism can be controlled manually up and down
Park menu
User position / Home position
Send the robotmanipulator to the user position:
•Hold joystick forward or backwards. The robotmanipulator will now go to the user position,
the Robot Interface will move upwards;
•A beep will sound when the retract procedure has finished;
•When the joystick is being released the focus on the display will jump to the 3rd icon.
Send the robotmanipulator to the home position:
•The robotmanipulator can be send to the home position by selecting the icon shown above
and hold the joystick forward or backwards;
•A beep will sound when the home procedure has finished;
•When the joystick is still being held, the robotmanipulator will shut down after 3 second
(when configured).
