DESCRIPTION AND SPECIFICATIONS
The I-Series are single-stage, end suction, centrifugal pumps
for general liquid transfer, booster applications, irrigations, and
general service pumping.
Pump impellers are fully enclosed, key-driven, and held in position
by an impeller bolt and washer. Casings are full volute in design.

Dependent on the pump size, the suction and discharge
connections will be threaded, anged or victaulic. Shafts are
protected with replaceable shaft sleeves.
Close-coupled units have NEMA-standard JP motors with C-face
mounting and key-driven shaft extension. SAE drive units bolt
directly to the engine ywheel housing for SAE sizes 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5.
Optional elastomer element couplings are available for 6.5-,
7.5-, 8-, 10-, 11.5-, and 14-inch ywheels. Frame-mounted units
can be coupled to motors through a shaft-to-shaft coupling, or
belt-driven.
Based on the diversity of applications and requirements within which the I-Series pumps are installed, the configurations, materials of
construction, and specifications may significantly vary within the models available. Therefore it is the responsibility of the installer and
customer to confirm the model of pump and reference catalog information accordingly to identify the specifics of the unit prior to installation.

Installation Location:
• Locate the pump as near liquid source as practical,
below level of liquid for ooded suction, and
automatic re-priming capability.
• Allow adequate space for servicing and ventilation.
Protect the unit from weather and water damage
due to rain, ooding or freezing temperatures.
Wiring And Grounding
Install, ground, and wire according to local and
National Electrical Code requirements.
Install an all-leg electrical power disconnect switch near
the pump.
Disconnect and lockout electrical power before installing or
servicing the pump.
Electrical supply MUST match pump’s nameplate
specications. Incorrect voltage can cause re,
damage motor, and void the warranty.
Motors without built-in protection MUST be provided
with contactors and thermal overloads for single-phase
motors, or starters with heaters for three-phase motors.
See motor nameplate.
• Use only copper wire to motor and ground. The
ground wire MUST be at least as large as the wire
to the motor. Wires should be color-coded for ease
of maintenance.
• Follow motor manufacturer’s wiring diagram on the
motor nameplate or terminal cover carefully.
This equipment must not be used by children or
persons with reduced physical, sensory or mental
abilities, or lacking in experience and expertise,
unless supervised or instructed. Children may not
use the equipment, nor may they play with the unit
or in the immediate vicinity.
FAILURE TO PERMANENTLY GROUND THE
PUMP, MOTOR, AND CONTROLS BEFORE
CONNECTING TO ELECTRICAL POWER CAN
CAUSE SHOCK, BURNS OR DEATH.
INSPECTION
All equipment is inspected at the factory prior to shipment.
However, you should inspect all equipment upon arrival for
shipping damage and item shortages from the packing slip.
Report any damage or shortages to the carrier.
INSTALLING PUMP
Ensure that all foreign material has been removed from the pump
before mounting. Be sure to remove all shipping protection prior
to operation.
NOTICE: Many of the pumps may be shipped with protective
guards and coatings.
SUCTION PIPING
For best performance the suction piping should be at least as large
as the pump ange, never smaller and ideally, at minimum, one
size larger. Use an eccentric reducer at the suction ange with the
straight side mounted up. The use of ow-retarding ttings is to be
avoided and, if necessary, should never be placed closer than four
times the pipe diameter to the pump suction. The pump should
be at the highest point of the piping. Slope the piping up to the
pump to prevent air pockets and avoid changing pipe size with the
exception of the eccentric reducer mentioned above. All suction
piping and ttings are to be checked for any foreign material (rocks,
bolts, wire, etc.) and also any sharp burrs that could disrupt the ow.

Bearing Frame Models
• A at substantial foundation surface MUST be provided
to avoid distortion and/or strain when tightening the
foundation bolts. A rubber mounting is acceptable to
reduce noise or excessive vibration.
• Tighten motor hold-down bolts BEFORE connecting
piping to pump
• It is recommended that the base plate be grounded
to a foundation with solid footing. Refer to FIGURE 1.
• Place unit in position on wedges located at four
points, two below approximate center of driver
and two below approximate center of pump. Adjust
wedges to level unit. Level or plumb suction and
discharge connections.
• Make sure bedplate is not distorted and nal
coupling alignment can be made within the limits
of movement of motor and by shimming,
if necessary.
• Tighten foundation bolts nger tight and build dam
around foundation. Pour grout under bedplate
making sure the areas under the pump and motor
feet are lled solid. Allow grout to harden 48 hours
before fully tightening foundation bolts.
DISCHARGE PIPING
Use a concentric taper on the discharge side to increase discharge
pipe diameters. All valving and additional ttings should be the
same size as the discharges connection. The discharge size should
be adequate to maintain appropriate velocities and reduce
friction losses.
SUCTION & DISCHARGE PIPE FLANGES
All piping is to be supported, braced, and lined up square before
connection to the pump. A exible tting is recommended on
both suction and discharge to eliminate any piping strains being
transmitted to the pump.
NOTICE: Flexible pipe couplings must be restrained so as not
to transmit any strain to the pump anges when
expanding or contracting under pressure. Unrestrained
expansion ttings can transmit enormous forces to the
pump anges.
ROTATION
Before the pump is started, correct rotation must be confirmed.
If the rotation is not correct then interchange any two of the
leads on a three-phase driver. For a single-phase driver refer
to the wiring diagram.
OPERATION
Pre-Start
1. Verify that rotation is correct and that the shaft
rotates freely.
2. Check all piping connections for tightness.
3. Inspect all accessories and make sure they are
appropriate for your installation.
4. Verify that the driver and coupling are aligned
correctly and that all guards are in place.
5. Ensure that all bearings and grease seals
are lubricated.
6. Follow the instruction on all tags, labels, and decals
attached to the equipment.
Do not operate the pump without guards in place
over the rotating parts. Exposed rotating parts can
catch clothing, ngers or tools causing severe injury
to personnel.
Close-Coupled Models
Units may be installed horizontally, inclined or vertically with
the motor above the pump. The motor feet MUST be bolted
to a substantial surface (horizontal or vertical) that is capable
of complete and rigid support for the pump and motor. For
vertical operation, the motor should be tted with a drip cover or
otherwise protected against liquid entering the motor (rain, spray,
condensation, etc.).

Frame-Mounted Units Only
• Alignment MUST be checked prior to running. See FIGURE 2.
• Tighten all hold-down bolts before checking alignment.
• If realignment is necessary, always move the motor.
Shim as required.
• Parallel misalignment, shafts with axis parallel
but not concentric: place dial indicator on one hub
and rotate this hub 360° while taking readings
on the outside diameter of the other hub. Parallel
alignment is achieved when reading is 0.010-inch
(0.254 mm) total indicator reading (TIR), or less.
• Angular misalignment, shaft with axis concentric
but not parallel: place dial indicator on one hub and
rotate this hub 360° while taking readings on the
face of the other hub. Angular alignment is
achieved when reading is 0.020-inch (0.508 mm) TIR,
or less.
• Final alignment is achieved when parallel and
angular requirements are satised with motor
hold-down bolts tight.
NOTICE: Always recheck both alignments after making
any mechanical adjustments
SAE-Engine Drive Pumps
Requirements For Proper Operation
Pump End:
When delivering the required capacity/gallons per minute (gpm)
to the system piping, the pump must add the amount of head
required by the system at the capacity. The operating head-
capacity point should be as close as possible to the highest
eciency line shown on the performance curve, and must be
below the head-capacity line labeled “maximum” revolutions
per minute (rpm). The maximum operation rpm for the pump is
determined by bearing life, or in some cases, by the pressure limits
of the pump. Suction and discharge openings are National Pipe
Thread (NPT) tapped for standard pipe, or faced and drilled per
ANSI B16.1, class 150 for standard anges as indicated. Maximum
working pressure for class 30 cast iron, per ANSI B16.1, is 175 psi.
Engine:
Internal combustion engines are variable speed, variable power
machines. The power output depends on the engine speed/
rpm and will be reduced when operating altitude, and/or the air
temperature increases. When driving the pump at the rpm required
to deliver water into the system piping, the engine must operate
within the engine manufacturer’s minimum and maximum rpm
limits. The power output to supply the pump power demand
must not exceed the continuous rated power of the engine, after
derating for all power consuming engine accessories and adjusting
for installation site altitude and air temperature.
Verify Match Of Pump End To Engine
SAE Bracket Size:
Engine drive pumps are available to t engines having a standard
SAE 5 through SAE 1 bellhousing and ywheel. For a new engine,
the engine supplier can provide the SAE housing number. For
an existing engine, the bellhousing bore and bolt circle can be
measured and compared against the standard SAE housing
dimensions listed in TABLE 1, to identify the housing SAE number.
• Measure the bellhousing bore (A), and the bolt
circle (B), as accurately as possible with a tape
measure (to the nearest 1/32-inch).
• Count the number of threaded holes in the bell
housing (C). Test the threaded holes with a bolt
to determine the thread series.
• Compare the measured dimensions (A), (B), and (C)
against TABLE 1 to determine the SAE number of
the bellhousing to be sure it matches the SAE
number of your pump.

• The ywheel coupling transmits power from the
engine ywheel to the pump shaft. The maximum
power that a coupling can safely handle is shown
by a rating number,“R”which is listed in the
coupling dimensions tables.
• When selecting a ywheel coupling for a pump and
engine, rst determine the power rating that the
pump will demand. On the pump performance
curve, nd the rpm and break horsepower (bhp) values
required to produce the supplication head-capacity point.
• Divide the bhp by the rpm, then multiply the
result times 100. The result will be the demand
number for the pump.
• Next, select a coupling that can safely transmit
the power and which will t the ywheel dimensions.
For a coupling to be suitable, it must have an“R”:
rating number GREATER THAN the pump
demand number.
• Torsional compatibility of the engine, pump, and
coupling is the responsibility of the assembler.
Franklin Electric will supply data for the pump
and coupling for use by the assembler for a
torsional analysis.
Other Flywheels
• Some engines are tted with ywheels specic to
other kinds of machinery (electrical generators, torque
converters, etc.) and require non-standard ywheel
couplings. These may be purchased from
third party vendors or suppliers.
Flywheel For Industrial Type Overcenter Clutches
• FIGURE 3 shows the hollowed-out appearance of
the ywheels made for use with overcenter type
clutch power take-o assemblies.
• These ywheels will have a recessed bore machine
into the face, and a set of tapped holes, which will
be used to attach the coupling to the ywheel.
Dimensions are governed by an SAE standard
and are listed in TABLES 1A and 1B, FIGURE 4.
The“clutch size”shown in the table is the nominal
clutch-facing diameter for drive ring type
overcenter clutches.

Pump To Engine Assembly (SAE)
Preparation for Assembly of Pump on Engine
• Clean face and register t over ywheel housing
and ywheel as necessary to remove all grease,
dirt or rust (and all traces of rust preventative)
which would interfere with installation of pump
and/or prevent correct alignment. If ywheel is
tted with a pilot bearing for a transmission shaft,
remove and discard. The pilot bearing is not
required for installation of the pump end, and
could interfere with the pump shaft.
• Examine shaft spine closely. Use a le, if necessary,
to remove any burrs that would prevent
coupling from sliding freely onto the shaft.
• Lubricate pump shaft spline liberally with
anti-seize.
• Slide the coupling onto shaft until it is stopped
against the shaft
• Measure the distance from the engine side of the
ywheel coupling adapter ring to the mounting
face of the pump bracket. Refer to FIGURE 5 above,
Dimension“A”.
• Next, measure depth from face of ywheel housing
on engine, to face on ywheel against which
coupling will be bolted. Refer to FIGURE 5 above,
Dimension“B”.
• Pump measurement must be less than engine
measurement or axial interference will result in
thrust force on engine crankshaft bearings.
Simply stated, Dimension“A” must be less than
Dimension“B”.
Installation Of Coupling On Flywheel
Flywheel Coupling Overcenter Type:
• These couplings are aligned concentric with the
ywheel by register t on the ywheel.
• Be sure to remove all preservative from the
engine’s ywheel.
• Fit the coupling into the ywheel. Align the
bolt holes and engage coupling with register
t on ywheel. Tap coupling with a soft heavy
hammer, if necessary, to be sure that it’s seated
at against ywheel. Secure coupling tightly
to ywheel with capscrews and lockwasher.
Installation Of Pump On Engine
• Lift pump with suitable lifting apparatus and align
pump shaft with coupling. End of pump shaft has
a pilot diameter, which permits engagement
of pump shaft into coupling.
• Reach into pump suction opening and rotate
impeller slightly until the shaft will engage
the coupling. Verify that there is no gap between
bracket and ywheel housing faces. Rotate pump
as necessary to align bracket holes with engine.
Install cap screws and bolt pump end securely
to engine.
NOTICE: If any interference, or incompatibility of parts, is detected
during installation, DO NOT proceed with assembly. Direct
the problem to your nearest Franklin Electric Distributor.
NOTE: When the coupling is correctly assembled, the hub will not bottom out
on the shaft splines. If it should bottom out, reverse the coupling on the
shaft as shown to gain clearance. If coupler is reversed, verify clearance
between ywheel and coupler as indicated in FIGURE 5 or premature coupler
and/or pump failure may occur.

Type AC-T with Taper Bushing
Flywheel coupling type AC-T...F2 is designed to accept a taper
bushing for shaft mounting. The rubber disc element is vulcanized
directly to the taper hub. After completion of the assembly,
a shrink-t-like connection, free from backlash in the bore, is
established between the coupling hub with rubber disc element
and the shaft.
Thanks to the use of commercially available taper bushings with a
number of dierent bore dimensions (sold separately), the need for
nishing the bores and keyways of the coupling hub is omitted for
coupling type AC-T. The torque, which can be transmitted, depends
on the particular taper bushing. The advantage is the ease of
assembly and disassembly with no need for special tools.

Mounting Instructions For Flywheel Couplings
1. The outer taper of the taper bushing and the bore with
the inner taper of the element hub shall show bright
metal and must be free of grease prior to mounting.
Preservatives must be removed completely.
2. Insert the taper bushing into the element hub and line up all
connecting bores. Make sure that half-threaded bores coincide
with half-plain bores (FIGURE 6).
3. Screw in lightly greased or oiled assembly screws. Do not
tighten the screws yet (FIGURE 7).
4. Slide the element hub with inserted taper bushing onto the
cleaned shaft with keyway and put it into the mounting
position Lx (FIGURE 8).
5. Tighten the screws uniformly up to the tightening torque MA2
specied in TABLE 2 using a torque wrench.
6. The screws can be retightened by tapping against the taper
bushing with a hammer using an intermediate plate.
Repeat, if necessary.

How to Remove the Element Hub with Taper Bushing
1. Loosen and remove all screws. Depending on the taper
bushing size, screw either 1 or 2 greased screws into the half
pulling-o thread(s) of the taper bushing (FIGURE 9).
2. Tighten the screws uniformly until the taper bushing is loose
in the element hub (FIGURE 10).
3. As soon as the taper bushing is loose, the element hub can be
pulled o the shaft together with the taper bushing.

Tightening Torques for Flywheel Couplings
All bolts and screws must be tightened to the specied torques in
order to ensure a reliable torque transmission. Prior to putting the
machinery into operation, all bolts and screws of the coupling must
be checked for proper t (FIGURE 11).
MAINTENANCE
Before any servicing:
1. Read this manual carefully.
2. Shut down driver and lock out incoming power to ensure
that the pump will remain inoperative.
3. If the pump or components are hot, allow adequate
cooling prior to servicing the unit.
4. Close the suction and discharge valves.
5. Vent pump slowly and drain completely.
Operators and maintenance personnel should
have a good understanding of all aspects of this pump and the
pumping conditions. Failure of operating personnel to be familiar
with all aspects of pump operation outlined in this manual could
contribute to equipment damage, bodily injury or possible death.
Use lifting and moving equipment in good
repair and with adequate capacity to prevent injuries to personnel
or damage to equipment. Attach lifting equipment to the lifting
device tted to the pump. If chains or cable are wrapped around
the pump to lift it, make certain that they are positioned so as
not to damage the pump, and so that the load will be balanced.

LUBRICATION
Closed-coupled Units
Bearings are located in and are part of the motor. For lubrication
information, refer to motor manufacturer’s instructions.
Bearing Frame
The lubrication of the ball bearings will depend on speed, load,
ambient temperature, contamination, moisture, intermittent
or continuous service, and other factors. These regreasing
recommendations are general in nature and are to be used
with good judgment and consideration of the pump service.
The following is a suggested lubrication interval chart.
To lubricate the ball bearings, remove the plastic covers from the
zerk ttings. Ensure that the zerk tting and the end of the grease
gun are clean. Use only a hand-operated grease gun with Chevron
SRI Grease or equivalent. Under normal operating conditions
adding approximately 2 oz. per service interval would be expected.
DISASSEMBLY
Verify the following:
1. Driver is shut down and power is locked out.
2. If pump components are hot, allow to adequately cool.
3. Suction and discharge valves are shut.
4. Pump is drained.
Review all safety information and follow the instructions in the
manual, as well as all tags, labels, and decals attached to the pump
or related equipment.
Liquid End (steps are all "if applicable")
1. Remove volute case bolts.
2. Remove volute from pump bracket.
3. Inspect volute wear ring and replace if worn.
4. While restraining shaft with an appropriate tool (or strap
wrench), remove impeller bolt. CAUTION: Impeller bolt
may need to be heated to assist in removal. Discard bolt
if heated.
5. Remove impeller washer if present.
6. Carefully remove impeller from shaft by one of these methods:
1. Insert two pry-bars 180° apart between the impeller
and bracket. Carefully pry o impeller.
2. Use an appropriately sized gear puller.
7. Remove impeller key.
8. Remove bracket bolts.
9. Remove seal housing bolts and remove the bracket from
the driver. Depending on the conguration, this may remove
the seal box along with the packing or mechanical seal.
10. Inspect shaft sleeve. Remove and replace if damaged.
CAUTION: Shaft sleeve may need to be heated to assist
in removal.
11. Remove the mechanical seal stationary seat form the
bracket. Discard.
12. Inspect bracket hub wear ring and replace if worn.
Disassembly of Bearing Frame or SAE drive models.
1. Remove shaft slinger from shaft.
2. Remove shaft key from keyway.
3. Remove bearing frame cover.
4. Remove shaft assembly from bearing frame.
5. Remove lip seals from cover and bearing frame.
Discard and replace if worn.
6. Unthread and remove shaft bearing retainer, or remove
snap ring and bearing retainer.
7. Use bearing puller or arbor press to remove ball bearings.

Except as set forth in an Extended Warranty, for twelve (12) months from the date of installation, but in no event more

limited warranty does not apply to performance caused by abrasive materials, corrosion due to aggressive conditions or

f. With respect to motors and pumps, the following conditions automatically void this limited warranty:
1. Mud or sand deposits which indicate that the motor has been submerged in mud or sand.
2. Physical damage as evidenced by bent shaft, broken or chipped castings, or broken or bent thrust parts.
3. Sand damage as indicated by abrasive wear of motor seals or splines.
4. Lightning damage (often referred to as high voltage surge damage).
5. Electrical failures due to the use of non-approved overload protection.
6. Unauthorized disassembly.

DESCRIPCIÓN Y ESPECIFICACIONES
La Serie I está compuesta por bombas centrifugas de una etapa,
de aspiración axial, para la transferencia general de líquidos,
aplicaciones de aumento de la presión, sistemas de riego y servicio
de bombeo en general.
Los impulsores de la bomba están completamente cerrados,
movidos por chavetas y mantenidos en su posición por un perno
y arandela del impulsor. Las carcasas son de voluta completa
en diseño.

Dependiendo del tamaño de bomba, las conexiones de succión y
descarga pueden ser roscadas, bridadas o Victaulic. Los ejes están
protegidos con mangas reemplazables del eje.
Las unidades de acople cerrado tienen motores NEMA de estándar
JP con montaje de cara-C y una extensión de activación por
chaveta del eje. Las unidades de dispositivos SAE se atornillan
directamente a la carcasa del volante del motor para los tamaños
1, 2, 3, 4 o 5 SAE. Se cuenta con acoplamientos de elastómeros
opcionales para los volantes de 6.5, 7.5, 8, 10, 11.5 y 14 pulgadas.
Las unidades montadas en armazón pueden acoplarse a motores a
través de un acoplamiento de eje a eje, o por correa impulsora.
Dependiendo de la diversidad de aplicaciones y requisitos dentro de los cuales se instalan las bombas de la Serie I, las configuraciones,
materiales de construcción, y especificaciones pueden variar considerablemente dentro de los modelos disponibles. Por lo tanto, el instalador
y el cliente tienen la responsabilidad de confirmar el modelo de bomba y la información del catálogo de referencia adecuadamente para
identificar las cuestiones específicas de la unidad antes de la instalación. Además, se puede obtener asistencia adicional por parte de un

Ubicación de la instalación:
• Ubicar la bomba tan cerca de la fuente del líquido como sea
práctico; por debajo del nivel de líquido para la capacidad de
succión inundada y cebado automático.
• Dejar un espacio adecuado para el mantenimiento y la
ventilación. Proteger la unidad de la intemperie y del daño
del agua debido a la lluvia, inundación o temperaturas de
congelación.
Tendido eléctrico y conexión a tierra
Instalar, conectar a tierra y alambrar de acuerdo a los
requisitos de los códigos eléctricos locales y nacionales.
Instalar un interruptor de desconexión de la alimentación
eléctrica de todos los circuitos derivados cerca de la bomba.
Desconectar y bloquear el suministro eléctrico antes de
instalar o dar servicio a la bomba.
El suministro eléctrico DEBE coincidir con las
especicaciones de la placa de identicación. El voltaje
incorrecto puede ocasionar incendios, daños al motor y
anular la garantía.
Los motores con protección integrada DEBEN de contar
con contactores y sobrecargas térmicas para motores
monofásicos, o arrancadores con calentadores para motores
trifásicos. Consultar la placa de identicación del motor.
• Usar solamente alambre de cobre para el motor y la conexión
a tierra. El alambre de conexión a tierra DEBE ser como mínimo
del mismo calibre que el alambre al motor. Los alambres deben
estar codicados por color para facilitar el mantenimiento.
• Seguir cuidadosamente el diagrama de cableado del
fabricante sobre la placa de identicación del motor o la
cubierta de las terminales.
Este aparato no se destina para utilizarse por
personas (incluyendo niños) cuyas capacidades
físicas, sensoriales o mentales sean diferentes
o estén reducidas, o carezcan de experiencia
o conocimiento, a menos que dichas personas
reciban una supervisión o capacitación para el
funcionamiento del aparato por una persona
responsable de su seguridad. Los niños deben
supervisarse para asegurar que ellos no empleen
los aparatos como juguete.

INSPECCIÓN
Todo el equipo se inspecciona en la fábrica antes de su envío. Sin
embargo, usted debe inspeccionar el equipo a su llegada para
ver si hay daños por el envío y elementos faltantes del recibo de
embalaje. Reporte cualquier daño o faltante al transportista.
INSTALACION DE LA BOMA
Asegurarse de haber quitado todo el material ajeno a la bomba
antes de su montaje. Asegurarse de quitar toda el embalaje de
