domestic environment this product may cause radio interference, in which case
the user may be required to take appropriate measures. VCCI-A
Aluminum electrolytic capacitors
The aluminum electrolytic capacitors used in the product's printed circuit board
assemblies and in the mouse and keyboard are limited-life components. Use of
these components beyond their operating life may result in electrolyte leakage
or depletion, potentially causing emission of foul odor or smoke.
As a guideline, in a normal office environment (25°C) operating life is not
expected to be reached within the maintenance support period (5 years).
However, operating life may be reached more quickly if, for example, the
product is used in a hot environment. The customer shall bear the cost of
replacing replaceable components which have exceeded their operating life.
Note that these are only guidelines, and do not constitute a guarantee of
trouble-free operation during the maintenance support period.
High safety use
This product has been designed and manufactured to be used in commercial
and/or industrial areas as a server.
When used as visual display workplace, it must not be placed in the direct field
of view to avoid incommoding reflections (applies only to TX server systems).

CX400 S2
Operating Manual 7
1 Introduction
The PRIMERGY CX400 S2 server enclosure represents the first generation of
multi-node systems for large data centers as well as for small and medium size
environments. It is the 2U rack optimized enclosure to be filled with standard
infrastructure, components and applications. Due to its conventional front-to-
back cooling and rear side external connectivity it enables for cost-effectiveness
through installation and operation in existing rack infrastructures and air
conditioning. A low level of complexity is granted by avoiding sharing of fabrics,
I/O or management components. The main ingredients like server nodes, power
supply units (PSUs) and disk drives are hot-plug enabled for enhanced
availability and lowered servicing effort. The approach to minimized energy
consumption is underlined by up to two highly efficient (92%) 80Plus Gold
PSUs, providing power for all built-in parts.
Efficient cooling is guaranteed by the four centrally installed fan units. The
system offers free choice between server nodes without (1U) and with (2U)
GPGPU (General Purpose Computing on Graphics Processing Units),
depending on the specific applications’ characteristics. All server nodes are
half-wide, thus two of them may be positioned besides each other, and up to
four 1U or two 2U nodes are the maximum number per PRIMERGY CX400 S2
server enclosure, thus density may be doubled compared to standard rack
servers. Great flexibility is given through the different types of local disk drives,
being installed at the enclosure front side. Up to twelve 3.5 or twenty-four 2.5
storage drives are usable, be it HDDs or SSDs, both with either SATA or SAS
interfaces. The drives are assigned to the installed server nodes group wise,
adaptable to any demand and wallet.
The highly compact server enclosure occupies two height units (HU) in the rack.

2 Functional overview
2.1 Features
This section provides information on the features and technical data of the
PRIMERGY CX400 S2 server enclosure. For information on key characteristics
and layout of the system board, see the "PRIMERGY CX400 S2 Server
Enclosure Upgrade and Maintenance Manual".
Server enclosure
The PRIMERGY CX400 S2 server enclosure consists of the server enclosure
which has to be equipped with different configurations of server nodes, as there
are:
– 1 up to 4 PRIMERGY CX250 S2 server nodes
– 1 up to 2 PRIMERGY CX270 S2 server nodes
Hard disk drives
The server enclosure can be equipped with a maximum of 24 x 2.5 "
HDD / SSDs or 12 x 3.5" HDD modules.
Each HDD module can accommodate an SAS/SATA hard disk drive or SSD
drive with a maximum height of 1 inch. The module is connected to the
SAS/SATA backplane wirelessly. This allows HDD / SSD modules to be plugged
in or pulled out easily.
Four SAS/SATA hard disk drives can be controlled by the onboard SAS/SATA
controller. To control further SAS/SATA hard disk drives, an additional RAID
controller must be installed.
Hybrid configurations of SAS HDDs, SATA HDDs and SSDs within the same
logical drive (RAID array) are not supported.
If the server enclosure has the corresponding RAID configuration, HDD
modules can also be replaced during operation.

12 Operating Manual
CX400 S2
Functional overview
Power supply
The system has two bays for hot-swap power supply units. If one power supply
unit is defective, a warning is generated and all CPUs will be forced to work with
the lowest frequency. Each hot-plug power supply unit can be replaced during
operation (see the "PRIMERGY CX400 S2 Upgrade and Maintenance
Manual").
The server enclosure uses a hot-plug PSU, which automatically sets itself to a
mains voltage in the range of 100 - 240 V.
High level of availability and data security
When memory data is accessed, 1-bit errors are identified in the main memory
and automatically corrected with the error correcting code (ECC) method.
ASR&R (Automatic Server Reconfiguration and Restart) restarts the system in
the event of an error and automatically "hides" the defective system
components.
A RAID controller supports different RAID levels and increase the availability
and data security of the system.
The hot-plug HDD modules provide additional availability.
