SAVE THESE INSTRUCTIONS
FWIP TIP: The instructions appearing in this User Manual cannot
cover every possible
condition and situation that may occur. Common sense
and caution must be
practiced when operating and maintaining any appliance.
Unboxing
Once you have your area cleared and ready for the machine, lay the box on its side with the
graphic facing upward. Cut the tape along its length. Remove the top cardboard case. While
our pulp packaging is biodegradable, we kindly ask you to store and keep your original box
packaging for warranty purposes.
DO NOT lift the machine by the handle. (The handle moves and will slide out when pulled).
Instead, carefully lift the FWIP Portobello machine out of the lower cardboard case like you
would pick up a baby (you’ve brought it to life by giving it a name, after all!) and gently place
it on the chosen flat surface.
FWIP TIP: You absolutely do not have to smell it like the individual in the sketch
below.
You can if you wish. We won’t judge you either way.
6

machine, the cable should come out the back at 2 o’clock.
Remove the plastic protective bag, and dispose of responsibly. Please keep away from
children.
Remove the blue protective stickers found on the machine. The clear sticker covering the
front button with a red flap is especially satisfying to take off!

Initial Setup
Please keep the original pulp packaging your FWIP Portobello machine came in. You may
need it to send it back safely for any service or checks. Please keep the protective plastic bag
safely away from children and pets, in case you need to pack your FWIP Portobello machine
back in the box.
oThe Swivel Base & ‘Magic’ Pin
The FWIP Portobello machine has a swivel feature that allows the Base (10) to rotate 220
degrees, allowing the operator to:
- Position the FWIP Portobello machine to be customer-facing on the
counter and swivel it towards the operator to dispense a FWIP
- Remove empty FWIP pods from the Pod Bin Chute (16)
at the back when
it is full
FWIP TIP: Visible product placement of the iconic Portobello machine has been proven
to increase sales.
The FWIP Portobello machine is set up to swivel 220 degrees clockwise - from an
approximately 12 o’clock position to a 9 o’clock position.
To allow the machine to swivel, remove the ‘magic’ Base Locking Pin (29) from the hole in
the Pod Bin Chute (16).
Pin In = Machine locked and will not swivel
Pin Removed = Machine unlocked and will swivel
FWIP TIP: It’s called the “Magic” Pin (29) for a reason. If you don’t take good care of
it, it WILL disappear on you.

Then, wait – It will take a few minutes for the machine to start up. After a few seconds,
the lights in the Dispensing Area (7) should come on. After a few more seconds,
the light ring around the OLED Button (3) will shine dark blue, after which the
OLED Button (3) screen in the centre of the button should come on. You’re on
the right track.
FWIP TIP: Patience is a virtue. When you first plug in your FWIP Portobello machine,
the process may take up to a minute to program and connect. There’s
nothing you need to do during this time.
14

2. If this is your first time setup, then the machine may prompt you to connect to a
Wi-Fi network by displaying this icon:
Please see page (16) for further details on this.
3. The FWIP Portobello machine will now run through a test cycle. DO NOT attempt

4. The test cycle will have a loading screen displayed that shows “CALIBRATING”.
Just let it do its thing.
5. If the set-up is successful, the FWIP Portobello machine will say ‘Hello’ in one of
any 160 languages. This means it is ready to serve – Hooray!
6. After ‘Hello’ it will ask you to ‘Choose Pod’, ‘Remove Sticker’ and ‘Insert Pod’.
7. If the set-up is not successful (sometimes the stars don’t always align when it
comes to technology), please turn the FWIP Portobello machine off and on again
and repeat the steps above. As soon as you turn it back on again, please make
sure to wait up to 30 seconds again for it to start the calibration cycle.

Connecting the Portobello
to the Internet
FWIP TIP: Why is it important to connect your FWIP Portobello machine to the
internet?
Simple. Because only when you connect the machine will you be able to
recognise it as your own and officially become a member of the FWIP CLUB. It
will unlock your entire backend desktop program and APP that will let you
place orders, log service calls, check your invoices and revisit any instruction
manuals. It is the one-stop shop to everything you need. Your FWIP Portobello
can also tell you if your machine is on or off if you have multiple locations and
inform you about how many portions and of what flavour you’re selling where
– great if you’re planning your next flavour or marketing campaign! And if
that’s not enough, your FWIP Portobello also sends health signals back to
basecamp (FWIP Headquarters) so that we can address any service issues
before you even know about them. It’s no wonder they call it the world’s
smallest and SMARTEST gelateria!
Attention: When you purchased your FWIP Portobello machine, you were asked to
confirm a series of questions around Wi-Fi and connectivity. If you
confirmed
an open and accessible Wi-Fi, then please follow Steps 1 – 5 below to get
connected.
If you confirmed a GSM SIM Card requirement (subject to additional
charges), then your machine should already be configured with a Wi-Fi
“dongle” that is inserted into the back of the machine. Please jump to
Section: Internet via GSM SIM-Enabled Connection
, found on page 20.
If you’re human and you can’t remember if you answered “Wi-Fi” or “GSM-
SIM” because you had other things like Game of Thrones on your mind,
don’t
worry, please just go through the below instructions in order.
Quick Start Guide (via Wi-Fi Connection)
Using a Wi-Fi enabled device (tablet, phone etc), search for and connect to a Wi-Fi Access
point named “Fwip-Configuration”. It should be listed as one of the Wi-Fi options that pops
up automatically. Click on it.

Detailed Wi-Fi Connectivity Guide
Checking for existing Wi-Fi
The very first thing that the machine does, is to check for any Wi-Fi
connections that it has used before. If those Wi-Fi exist, the machine will
try to use them. If there is no known Wi-Fi, the machine will move to the
next step.
Create Access Point
The machine will create its own Wi-Fi network. This is provided to the
user, so we can set up the connection. The Wi-Fi network is called
"fwip-configuration". It does not need a password.
Connect
You need to connect to the Access Point using a phone, tablet or PC
device. Please don’t try to use anything from before 1995 – we don’t do
miracles. Any device with Wi-Fi and a web-browser should be able to be
used. Select the Wi-Fi on your device. You do not need to use any Wi-Fi
password for "fwip-configuration".
Portal
After connecting to the "fwip-configuration" Wi-Fi, your device usually
brings up the Captive Portal login page. On some devices, this does not
automatically happen. If this does not happen after a few moments,
opening any web page will redirect to the Captive Portal as well. Should
you experience any problems, please direct the browser on your device
to: http://192.168.42.1/
Login & Password
In the Captive Portal, there are options to select the Wi-Fi to use. Please
select the Wi-Fi that you want to connect the machine to. Under this
option, there is a box to enter the password for the Wi-Fi. Please use the
credentials (WiFi SSID Name and WiFi SSID Password) which were
19

FWIP Portobello machine Manual – FWP1.1/19
checked above and usually found on your router. Click the Connect
button.
Connected
When the network credentials have been entered, the machine will
disable the access point and try to connect to the network. If the
connection fails, it will restart the Access Point for another attempt. If it
succeeds, the configuration will be saved by the machine and
automatically used in the future.
That’s called Modern Magic!
Slow Start-Guide: Checking your Wi-Fi is suitable
Not all Wi-Fi’s are the same. So, if the above “Quick Start” didn’t work, the first thing you
need to do is to check that the connection on site is suitable for the machine:
●Step 1: Does the site have a private WiFi? Meaning, a Wi-Fi router (wifi box) with
username and password?
● If the answer is YES, move to Step 4. If the answer is NO, move to Step 2.
●Step 2: Is there a public access WiFi? Meaning, a Wi-Fi that is publicly available with
a user name and password? If the answer is YES, move to Step 3.
●Step 3: Does the end-user need to accept “Terms & Conditions” (e.g. like a Hotel
Wi-Fi or an airport Wi-Fi that requires you to register or pass security)? If the
answer is YES, move to Step 5. If the answer is NO, move to Step 4.
●Step 4: Obtain the Wi-Fi credentials from the end-user (following information):
WiFi SSID Name:
WiFi SSID Password:
You have identified a suitable Wi-Fi and are now ready to connect the FWIP Portobello
machine
to the Internet:
- Use a Wi-Fi enabled device (mobile phone, tablet, etc.)
- Select: “Fwip-Configuration” from your Wi-Fi options
- Follow the step by step instructions that will appear on the browser page
that pops up
FWIP TIP: If ‘Fwip-Configuration’ disappears at any point in time, just turn the Wi-Fi
on your phone, tablet, etc., off and on again. It should reappear in a minute or two.
