Important Safety and Product
Information
WARNING
Failure to avoid the following potentially
hazardous situations could result in an
accident or collision resulting in death or
serious injury.
Battery Warnings
If these guidelines are not followed,
the internal lithium-ion battery may
experience a shortened life span or may
present a risk of damage to the GPS
device, re, chemical burn, electrolyte
leak, and/or injury.
• Do not leave the device exposed to a
heat source or in a hightemperature
location, such as in the sun in an un-
attended vehicle. To prevent damage,
remove the device from the vehicle
or store it out of direct sunlight, such
as in the glove box.
• Do not disassemble, modify, reman-
ufacture, puncture or damage the
device or batteries.
• Do not immerse or expose the
device to water or other liquids, re,
explosion, or other hazard.
• Do not use a sharp object to remove
the battery.
• Keep the battery away from children.
• Do not use a power and/or data
cable that is not approved or supplied
by Garmin®.
• If using an external battery charger,
only use the Garmin accessory
approved for your product.
• Only replace the battery with the
correct replacement battery. Using
another battery presents a risk of re
or explosion. To purchase a replace-
ment battery, see your Garmin dealer
or the Garmin Web site.
• Do not operate the device outside

Software License Agreement
BY USING THE DEVICE, YOU AGREE
TO BE BOUND BY THE TERMS AND

providers and is protected under the
United States of America copyright laws
and international copyright treaties. You

for which source code is not provided,
are valuable trade secrets of Garmin and/
or its third-party providers and that the
Software in source code form remains a
valuable trade secret of Garmin and/or

decompile, disassemble, modify, reverse
assemble, reverse engineer, or reduce
to human readable form the Software or
any part thereof or create any derivative

not to export or re-export the Software

Limited Warranty
Garmin’s non-aviation products are
warranted to be free from defects in
materials or workmanship for one year
from the date of purchase. Within this
period, Garmin will, at its sole option,
repair or replace any components
that fail in normal use. Such repairs or
replacement will be made at no charge to
the customer for parts or labor, provided
that the customer shall be responsible
for any transportation cost. This warranty
does not apply to: (i) cosmetic damage,
such as scratches, nicks and dents; (ii)
consumable parts, such as batteries,
unless product damage has occurred
due to a defect in materials or workman-
ship; (iii) damage caused by accident,
abuse, misuse, water, ood, re, or other
acts of nature or external causes; (iv)
damage caused by service performed by
anyone who is not an authorized service
provider of Garmin; or (v) damage to a
product that has been modied or altered
without the written permission of Garmin,
or (Vi) Damage To A Product That Has
Been Connected To Power And/Or
Data Cables That Are Not Supplied By
Garmin. In Addition, Garmin Reserves
The Right To Refuse Warranty Claims
Against Products Or Services That Are
Obtained And/Or Used In Contravention

VIRB®XE Quick Start
Manual
Introduction
WARNING

It is your responsibility to use the device
in a safe manner. Garmin® will not be
responsible for any property damage,
injuries or deaths resulting from any use
of this device in any activities.
Opening the Front Cover
You must open the front cover to install
the battery, memory card, and anti-fog
desiccant pack.
Grip the top and bottom of the latch
and pull to open the latch.
Open the front cover.
Installing a Memory Card
You must install a microSD™ memory
card to use your device. For optimal
performance, use a class 10 or better
memory card.
Open the front cover.
Insert the memory card into the
memory card slot with the contacts
facing the lens.

Press in the card until it clicks.
Close and latch the front cover.
Installing the Desiccant Pack
WARNING
Do not eat desiccant packs. Desiccant
packs contain silica, which may cause
irritation in your digestive system.
Harmful if swallowed by an infant or pet
due to choking hazard.
You should install an anti-fog desiccant
pack for optimal performance and fog
resistance.
Open the front cover
Insert the desiccant pack into the
desiccant tray .
Insert the desiccant tray into the
desiccant slot.
Close and latch the front cover.
The indicator dot on the desiccant pack
turns pink when the desiccant pack
becomes saturated. Heat the desiccant
pack at 85°C (185°F) for 60 minutes to
dry the desiccant pack for reuse.
Do not use a microwave oven it will
damage the desiccant.

Installing the Battery
WARNING
This product contains a lithium-ion bat-
tery. To prevent the possibility of personal
injury or product damage caused by
battery exposure to extreme heat, store
the device out of direct sunlight.
Open the front cover.
Locate the metal contacts on the end
of the lithium-ion battery.
Insert the battery into the compart-
ment, contacts rst.
Press the battery into place.
Close and latch the front cover.
Charging the Battery
NOTICE
To prevent corrosion, thoroughly clean
and dry the contacts and the surrounding
area on the side of the device before
charging or connecting to a computer.
Refer to the cleaning instructions in the
owner’s manual.
Do not attempt to use the device to
charge a battery that was not provided
by Garmin. Attempting to charge a
battery that was not provided by Garmin
can damage the device and void the
warranty.
Plug the USB cable into a USB port
on your computer.

Align the charger posts with the con-
tacts on the side of the device, and
press the charger until it clicks.
Charge the battery completely.
Attaching the Device to the Mount
NOTICE
To prevent product loss or damage, do
not use the adhesive mounting base
when the temperature is below 5°F
(-15°C).
The permanent mounting adhesive is
xtremely difcult to remove after it is
installed.
Before you can install the adhesive
mounting base onto a surface, the
ambient temperature must be from 70° to
100°F (from 21° to 38°C).
Your device includes an assortment of
mounting bases and arms, which can
be used in many congurations. These
instructions provide an example of one
possible conguration. You can also
purchase additional mounts for your de-
vice, such as wearable mounts, vehicle
mounts, or a tripod mount. Go to
www.garmin.com/VIRB for more
information.
Thoroughly clean the mounting
surface using water or alcohol.
The mounting surface must be free of
dirt, debris, wax, or coatings.
Remove the lm from the adhesive

mounting base , and press the
base rmly onto the mounting sur-
face. You can use either the at base
or the curved base, depending on the
contour of the mounting surface.
Allow the base to bond to the mount-
ing surface for at least 24 hours.
Insert the coupler 2 into the base.
The lever 3 must be in the open
position.
To lock the coupler into the base,
snap the lever to the closed position.
The lever should be ush with the
base.
Insert the camera mount 4 into the
top of the coupler.
The device should be horizontal for
proper aspect ratio when recording
video.
Insert a thumbscrew 5 into the
larger opening of the joint, and tighten
the thumbscrew to lock the angle of
the joint.
NOTE: The metal tting indicates the
smaller opening of the joint.
If necessary, insert the included hex
wrench into the end of the thumb-
screw to adjust the tightness of the
joint.

Move the switch

Recording a Video
NOTE: If the battery power becomes
very low while recording video, the de-
vice automatically stops recording, saves
the video, and safely turns off.
Move the recording switch forward to
start recording video.
If the device is off, it turns on auto-
matically. The device starts recording
video immediately, and the red light
turns on.
Move the recording switch backward
to stop recording video.
The video is saved on the memory card
as an .mp4 le. The track log for the
video and sensor data is saved on the
memory card as a .t le.
G-Metrix™
Your VIRB®X/XE device contains built-in
GPS, G-force, and orientation sensors.
Your device can also wirelessly connect
to external ANT+®sensors and other
Garmin devices to capture even more
performance data.
You can use the free Garmin VIRB
mobile app or VIRB Edit software appli-
cation to automatically overlay gauges,
graphs, and more. You can then play
back your recorded video to show your

speed, acceleration, heart rate, and other
sensor data in real time.
Photos
Taking a Photo
Your device provides several methods
for taking a photo using the default
settings. You can change the photomode
to capture single, burst, or timelapse
photos by holding MENU andselecting
Photos> Mode.
• While on the home screen, select the
key to take a single photo.
• While one the home screen, hold the
key to take multiple photos in
burst-on-demand mode.
The device continues taking photos
the entire time you hold .
• While recording a video, select
the key to capture a photo at
the same resolution as the video
recording.
Photos taken while recording a video
always use single photo capture.
Photo timelapse or burst settings are
ignored while recording video.
Applications
Operating the Device Using Your
Mobile Device
The free Garmin VIRB app lets you
remotely view and control photo and
video recording using a compatible
mobile device. You can view playback
of recorded clips and photos, as well as
create, edit, and share videos on social
media. Go to www.garmin.com/apps for
more information.
Install the Garmin VIRB app from
the application store on your mobile
device.
On your VIRB device, select MENU
> WIFI> Status to turn on Wi-Fi®
wireless technology.
