I. Introduction
A. Description
T e Gaumard® S410.100 Blood Pressure Training system wit speakers includes a full-size
adult left arm.
T is is a versatile training tool developed to assist ealt professionals teac t e processes
and skills required to perform blood pressure auscultation procedures and tec niques.
T e Blood Pressure Training System features t e following:
1. Programmable, palpable radial pulse w en cuff pressure is less t an t e selected
systolic blood pressure
2. Korotkoff sounds K1 t roug K4 (K5 is silence) audible between systolic and diastolic
pressures.
3. Korotkoff sounds are automatically silenced if auscultation gap is selected
4. Korotkoff sounds are automatically adjusted depending upon selected eart rate and
t e rate of cuff deflation.
5. Conventional stet oscope to Auscultate Korotkoff sounds in t e antecubital area
6. Conventional sp ygmomanometer wit tubing assembly.
7. Programmable Blood Pressure Auscultation Tutor
a. Adjustable systolic and diastolic pressures
b. Adjustable auscultation gap
c. Adjustable pulse rate
d. Display tracks cuff pressure
e. T ree point calibration control (000/128/256)
8. International power supply 100 to 240 VAC
9. Speakers wit volume control allow students to ear w at t e individual student ears

II. Instructions for Use
A. Assem ly of Simulator
1. Unpack t e system and place t e blood pressure arm on a flat clean surface. Access to
electrical power is required.
2. Connect t e electrical cable leading from t e blood pressure arm to t e BP Auscultation
Tutor, being careful not to damage t e four small pins found wit in t e cable connector.
3. Connect t e international power supply to t e Tutor. You may ave to supply a
mec anical adaptor to access t e wall outlet in your area.
4. Connect t e long, clear tube extending from t e sp ygmomanometer assembly to t e
BP Tutor.
5. Connect t e speakers to t e BP Tutor and electrical power outlet.
6. Wrap t e blood pressure cuff around t e arm midway between t e deltoid and elbow.
7. Turn t e power switc ON. Do not press “Cali rate”. Note t at you will ear a
beating pulse at t e wrist. Locate t e radial artery, depress t e pulse slig tly and note
t at t e pulsing sound is muc softer.
8. T e BP Tutor normally remembers t e previous settings. At Gaumard®, we use t e
following settings designed to simulate a ypertensive patient aving an auscultation
gap. T e c allenge for t e student is to recognize t at t e systolic is 150 not 120. T e
150 may suggest ypertension w ile t e 120 would be incorrectly interpreted as normal.
Systolic 150
Diastolic 90
Upper auscultation gap 140
Lower auscultation gap 120
Pulse 70

B. Cali ration
1. Calibration is not normally required. In t e event t e Instructor concludes t at
calibration is necessary, proceed as follows;
2. Assemble t e system and turn t e Tutor ON. T e screen in t e upper rig t and of t e
Tutor will display “000”.
3. Press “Calibrate, Start” and t e display will s ow “CAL 000”.
4. Press “Calibrate, Start” again and t e display will s ow “CAL 128”.
5. Inflate t e blood pressure cuff to read 128 on t e dial of t e sp ygmomanometer.
6. Press “Calibrate, Start” and t e display will s ow “CAL 256”.
7. Now inflate t e blood pressure cuff to read 256 and press “Calibrate, Start” again.
8. At t is time, t e BP Tutor will display t e reading on t e sp ygmomanometer. Lower
t e cuff pressure to zero and watc t e display track t e sp ygmomanometer.
It is not necessary to re-cali rate the Tutor when it is restarted.
C. Changing Factory Settings
T e Blood Pressure Auscultation Tutor comes wit pre-installed factory settings.
• Systolic 150
• Diastolic 90
• Auscultation Gap
Upper auscultation gap 140
Lower auscultation gap 120
Pulse 70
• Pulse 70
1. This BP arm features an auscultation gap. This gap is slightly below the systolic
pressure in some patients. No audible Korotkoff sounds are heard even though the
radial pulse is present
2. f you wish to disable this feature, RESET the upper and lower auscultation gap
limits to ZERO.
3. Korotkoff sounds will then be heard between the selected systolic and diastolic
pressures.

To c ange previously selected values, proceed as follows:
1. Turn t e Tutor ON and observe t e previously selected values.
2. Press Systolic and observe t e value. If you agree, press Systolic again and t at
number is locked in. To increase or decrease t e Systolic pressure, press t e UP or
DOWN red arrows. W en t e desired value is reac ed, press Systolic once more and
t e new value is locked in.
3. Proceed wit Diastolic, Upper auscultation gap, lower auscultation gap, and eart Rate
in t e same manner. Once selected, eac value will disappear so t e student cannot
see t em.
D. Blood Pressure Training
1. Instruct t e student to take t e blood pressure by installing t e BP cuff and place t e
bell of t e stet oscope over t e speaker concealed in t e antecubital region of t e arm
near t e elbow. T e instructor may wis to press on t e radial pulse so it is not easily
eard by t e student t roug t e stet oscope.
2. Instruct t e student to pump up t e cuff until e/s e can no longer feel a radial pulse.
Go about 10 mm furt er. Now slowly release t e cuff pressure until t e first Korotkoff
sound is eard indicating t e Systolic pressure. Decrease t e cuff pressure and ear
K2, K3, and K4. T e K5 sound is silence.
3. Ask t e student to record t e Systolic pressure, t e Diastolic pressure, t e limits of t e
Auscultation gap (if any) as well as t e pulse rate. Compare t e values recorded by t e
Student wit t ose originally selected in order to determine a pass or fail status.
If an Auscultation gap was programmed, t e student will
not
ear t e
Korotkoff sounds between t e upper and lower limits.

C eck t at internal pins on t e connector are not bent or broken.
2. If t e calibration feature was initiated, simulator will not exit t is mode until calibration is
completed. Calibrate using instructions in Section II Part B.
3. Attempting to calibrate simulator wit out c anging values wit t e Blood Pressure Cuff,
will cause values to c ange randomly. Calibrate using instructions in Section II Part B.
