SFP28 Module Installation Notes

This installation note provides the installation instructions for the GBICS.com SFP28 modules. These SFP28
modules are hot-swappable input/output (I/O) devices, which connect the module port with the bre-optic or
copper network.
Ensure that you understand safe handling of lasers and have the following tools and parts available to install an
optical transceiver in a switch chassis:
• Electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap
• A rubber safety cap for the transceiver
Ensure you understand how to prevent ESD damage.
To install an SFP28 in an uplink socket please follow the below instructions
1. Attach an electrostatic discharge (ESD) grounding strap to your bare wrist, and connect the strap to the
ESD point on the chassis.
2. Remove the SFP28 from its packaging.
3. Ensure that the SFP28 is covered by a rubber safety cap. If it is not, cover the SFP28 with a safety cap.
4. Remove the dust cover covering the port in the uplink module. Save the dust cover in case you need to
cover the port later.
5. Using both hands, carefully place the SFP28 in the empty port in the uplink module. The connectors
should face the uplink module.
6. Slide SFP28 in gently until it is fully seated.
7. Remove the rubber safety cap when you are ready to connect the cable to the transceiver.
Caution:Ensure the transceiver is aligned correctly when you slide it into the port; misalignment
might bend the pins and make the transceiver unusable.

Laser and LED Safety Guidelines and Warnings
SFP28 transceivers are classied as Class 1M Laser Products (IEC 60825-1 2001–01).
Observe the following guidelines and warnings:
General Laser Safety Guidelines
When working around ports that support optical transceivers, observe the following safety guidelines to prevent
eye injury:
•Do not look into unterminated ports or at bres that connect to unknown sources.
• Do not examine unterminated optical ports with optical instruments.
• Avoid direct exposure to the beam.
Warning:Unterminated optical connectors can emit invisible laser radiation. The lens in the human eye
focuses all the laser power on the retina, so focusing the eye directly on a laser source—even a low-power
laser—could permanently damage the eye.

Unterminated Fiber-Optic Cable Warning
Warning:Invisible laser radiation might be emitted from the unterminated connector of a ber-optic cable. To
avoid injury to your eye, do not view the ber optics with a magnifying optical device, such as a loupe, within
100mm.
