Overview
The GigabyteGN-GT8Sisapowerful,high-performance,FastEthernetSwitch,which
actsastrafficcontrollerfor8highways toconnectyournetworks tootheroutside networks.
With8GigabitEthernetuplinkports,the GigabitSwitchcan automaticallynegotiate
withthe connected partnersforthe networkspeed and duplexmode.It isidealformicro-
segmenting large networks intosmaller,connected subnetsforimproved performance,
enabling bandwidth-demanding multimedia,imaging and databaseapplications.Moreover,
the 10/100/1000Mbpsauto-sensing abilityprovidesaneasy waytomigrate10Mbpsto
100Mbpsand 1000Mbpsnetworkwithease.Compared tothe shared 10Mbps,100Mbps
or1000Mbpsnetworks,the GigabitSwitchdeliversadedicated 10/100/1000Mbpscon-
nectiontoeveryattached clientwithno bandwidthcongestion issuesand the mostcost-
effectivewaytoinvestinyournetwork’s performanceinthe long run.
Store-and-forwardswitching mode guaranteeslowlatency,pluseliminatesall network
errors,including runtand CRC errorpackets.Toworkunderfullduplexmode,transmission
and receptionofthe framescanoccursimultaneouslywithoutcausing collisions,aswellas
doubling the networkbandwidth.
The GigabitSwitchusing plug-n-playwithoutneeding anysoftwaretoconfigure,and is
alsofullycompliantwithall kindsofnetworkprotocols.Moreover,the abundantdiagnostic
LEDson the front-panelprovide the operating statusofindividualportsand the entire
system.

Installing theHardware
The sitewhereyou placethe Switchmaygreatlyaffectitsperformance.When installing,
takethe following intoyourconsideration:
wInstallthe switchinafairlycooland dryplace.See PhysicalSpecification forthe
acceptabletemperatureand humidityoperating ranges.
wInstallthe switchinasitefree fromstrong electromagneticfieldgenerators(suchas
motors),viberation,dustand directexposuretosunlight.
wLeaveatleast10cm(about4linches)ofspaceatthe frontand rearofthe hub for
ventilation.
wInstallthe switchon the sturdy,levelsurfacethatcan supportitsweight, orin
standard-sizeequipmentrack.
ConnectingNetworkCable
The switchsupports10/100/1000MbpsGigabitEthernet. Eachporton the switchsupports
Auto-MDI/MDI-X.Auto-MDI/MDI-Xisafeaturethateliminatesthe need forworring about
using eitherastandardorcrossovercable-youcanuseeitherone -and allowsanyportto
be an uplinkport.
AC Power
The switchcan be used withACpowersupply100-240VAC,50~60Hz.Pleaseconnect
the poweradapterintothe powerportofthe switchand plug the otherend ofthe power
intothe electricaloutlet.

LocalConsoleManagement
You canmanage the Switchlocallyusing HyperTerminal;simplyconnectthe Switchtoa
PCorworkstationthroughthe serialport.
The serialportsettingsneed tobe configured beforeconnecting tothe Switch.Inorderto
change the settingsofyourport, run the HyperTerminalprogram.Thisprogramcomes
packaged withWindows,butitmaynotbe installed on yourcomputer.It shouldbe located
asisshownbelow(variesaccording tooperating system).If itisnot, consultyourWin-
dowsdocumentation forinstructionson installing HyperTerminal.
Toenablecommunicationswiththe Switch,the serialcablemustbe connected between
the Switchand the computer.
Makesureboththe Switchand the computerarepowered down.Next, plug one end ofthe
serialcableintothe consoleportoftheGN-GT8Sand the otherend ofthe serialcableinto
the COM1porton the back panelofyourcomputer.
Afterthe poweristurned on,pleaseselectAll Programsfromthe Startmenu.Fromhere
nowchooseAccessories,followed byCommunications.Inthe Communicationssub-
menu nowselectHyperTerminal.
Nowstartyourcomputerand turnonthe powerofthe GN-GT8S.

Inthe bottomdrop downboxlabeled Connectusing:,click the arrowand choosethe
COMportthattheGN-GT8Swillbe connected to.Inthe examplebelow,COM1isthe port

Onceyouhavepowered on the swtich,itwillbootup and enterthe initialsystemscreenas
shown.Pleasepress “Ctrl-S”key,youwillhaveaccess tothe systemconfigurationprogram.

The Configuration Programincludesthe PortStatus,PortConfig,MirrorConfig,VLAN
Config,TrunkConfig,Misc Config.
When youenterthe SmartSwitch’s systemconfigurationprogramwithaconsoleterminal
emulatorsoftware(e.g.HyperTerminal),the defaultPortConfiguration screen seen above
willappear.Withthe systemconfiguration programyou candefine systemparameters,
manage and controlthe switchand allports,ormonitornetworkconditions.
nPortStatusIndicatethe speed and linkstatusofeachport.
nPortConfiguration Define the speed,flowcontroland priorityfunction.
nMirrorPortConfiguration Monitortrafficatthe port.
nVLANConfiguration Define the VLANgroup ofthe switch.
nTrunkConfiguration Define the trunking groups.
nMISCConfiguration Define the aging time.

PortStatus
The PortStatuspage isdisplayed afterselecting <1>number.Fromthispage,you can
check the currentstatusofeachport.
The Speed/Dpxshowyouthe speed (10,100 or1000Mbps)and half/fullduplexmode of
the port. The LinkStatusshowyou whetherthe networkisconnected ornot.
