GENERAL–INTENDEDUSE
TheRopeTensionMeterRTM‐Disaninstrumentspeciallydesignedformeasuringthetensionin
differentkindofropes.Themeasurementsaremadeaccurateandswiftlysomewhereonthe
tensionedrope,withoutanyextrapreparations(off‐loadinge.t.c.).Themeasurementscanbedone
onropeswithdifferentdiametersanddifferentdesigns.Theropescanbemadeofsteel,metalor
plasticmaterial,andusedasGuy‐wires,suspensionwires,supportwiresforcautionarysystemse.t.c..
TheRTM‐Disabletocontainupto10differentcalibrations,i.e.measurementscanbedoneon10
differentropes,”RopeNo:s”,withoutbeingforcedtouseconversiontables.Onthedisplayyouget
therighttensionfortheseropes.WiththeRope‐Listattachedtotheinstrument,youcanselectthe
correct”RopeNo”(calibration).Inordertostronglyincreasetheaccuracyofthereadings,eachrope
iscalibratedatfourpoints.Theseare:0%,30%,60%and100%of”CalCap”.

resistant.

General
MeasurementsusingtheRTM‐Dcanbemadeintwodifferentways:
1. TheropetobemeasuredisloadedtotheforceX.TheRTM‐Disinstalledandthetension
valueisreadonthedisplay.
2. TheRTM‐Disinstalledontheropewhenitisslack.ThentheropeisloadedtotheforceX.
Afterthatthetensionvalueisreadonthedisplay.
Experiencehasgiventhatabettermeasurementresultisobtainedwhenusingmethod1above.
AllRTM‐D’s(”RopeNo:s.”)arenormallycalibratedformeasuringaccordingtomethod1,i.e.
measuringonanalreadytensionedrope.
Varioustypesofropes
OnthesignatthehandleoftheRTM‐D,themaxropedimension(diameter)isengraved,decided
fromtherangeoftheouterropesupports.Thelimitforusableminropedimensionismore
approximate.YoucanfindsomeguidanceunderSpecifications.
Formultistrand(flexible)ropesyounormallyobtaingoodaccuracy,evenifthediameterand/orthe
numberofstrandsdifferfromthecalibrationrope.Whenitcomestomeasurementsonrigidropes
withfewstrands,theaccuracywillbelessifthediameterand/ortheconstructionoftheropediffer.
Itisespeciallyobviousforthickstiffropes.Yougetthebestaccuracywhenmeasuringonarope
identicaltothecalibrationrope.
Measuringonatensionedrope(check)
Theinstrumentisnormallycalibratedformeasuringonanalreadytensionedropeaccordingto
method1above.Firstyouselectcorrect”RopeNo”,dependingonwhichropeyouaregoingtomake
measurementson.TheRTM‐Dthenshouldbemounted/tightenedtothetensedrope.The
measurementresultonthedisplayshowsthetensionforceintherope.Itisoftensuitableto
performafewmoremeasurementsatdifferentspotsontherope.
Slackropetoaspecifiedtension
Select”RopeNo”.InstalltheRTM‐Dontheslackrope.LoadtheropeuntiltheRTM‐Dshowsapprox.
90%ofthedesiredendvalue.LoosentheRTM‐Dandtheninstallitagain.TheRTM‐Dwillnow
indicateahighervalue,probablyratherclosetothedesiredendvalue.Ifnecessary,makean
adjustmentofthetensionwiththeRTM‐Dinstalled.LoosentheRTM‐Dandcheckagain.TheRTM‐D
shouldalwaysbecompletelyloosenedbetweenmeasurements.

PresstheON/OFFbuttontostarttheinstrument.Thestartupisindicatedonthedisplaybyshowing
selected”RopeNo”(earlierusedrope)forabout2seconds,e.g.
TheunitisturnedoffbypressingandholdingtheON/OFFbuttonforabout1second.Theunitwill
alsobeautomaticallyturnedoff,ifanyofthebuttonshavenotbeenactivatedwithina
programmabletime.Thetimecanbesetbetween1and60minutesandthisisdescribedinpage12.
Wheninstalledonthecompletelyslackrope,theRTM‐Dshouldindicatezeroonthedisplay,
otherwiseyouhavetozerotheinstrument.Whenyousettozero,holdtheRTM‐Dwiththe
tighteningdevicehangingverticallyorputtheRTM‐Dinthispositiononaslackrope.
TheinstrumentiszeroedbypressingandholdingtheENTER/ZEROforabout2seconds.Thedisplay
willIndicate

slowly.Iftheoverloadisduetothatthe”MaxCap”(theloadcell)oftheRTM‐Dhasbeenexceeded,
thereadingisflashingrapidly.Itcanbedifficulttoimmediatelyunderstandwhatkindofoverload
thatisdue,butitisimportanttoreducetheloadassoonasthedisplayflashes.

shouldbetighttothecentresupport4withoutbeingdeformed.
AfterUse
Dirtinthethreadsofthetighteningscrew(2)mustberemoved.Lubricateifnecessary.
Cleantheinstrumentandcheckthebatterycondition.Keep/carrytheinstrumentinthe
transportationcaseprovided.

TomaintaintheaccuracyoftheRTM,werecommendtosendittoGigasenseforrecalibrationona
regularbasis.Howoftenitneedstoberecalibrateddependsonhowoftenitisused.Ingeneral,we
recommendtosenditforrecalibrationeverysecondyear.However,ifRTMisusedfrequentlyas
severaltimesaday,werecommendtosenditforrecalibrationeveryyear.
RTM‐Disdesignedtobemaintenancefree.Incaseofcleaningtheequipment,thisshouldbedone,
bygentlywipingitoffwithadryordampcloth.
