CAUTION
IN ORDER TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE RF CONNECTORS,SECURE THE CABLES TO A PERMANENT,STATIC
OBJECT SUCH AS A TABLE OR PIPE,AT A DISTANCE OF 25-60 CM (10-25 IN.) FROM THE CPE,
PRIOR TO
CONNECTION.
Connecting RF Cables
Connect the two RF cables (from the LNB and ODU) to the RF-IN and RF-OUT connectors, respectively, as shown
below, using a recommended torque of 13 lb*ft/in (1.5 N/m).
Connecting LAN Cable
Use only CAT-5 type cables (approved by Gilat) to connect to the LAN ports.
Use only the LAN LEDs indications to make sure that the LAN ports are operational.
Connecting Grounding Cable
Connect the grounding cable (GND) from the CPE to the approved site.
Connecting Power Cable
Warning
TO REDUCE THE RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, DISCONNECT ALL POWER CORDS BEFORE
SERVICING THE UNIT.
The Capricorn PLUS CPE is powered with a 48VDC external power source. The CPE power connection
uses the optionally supplied Gilat power cables (CB000912) that include a 7A fuse on the “+” wire. An
accessible two pole circuit breaker (Rated 10A) must be provided in the building for the DC power feed
source In case of dual power supplies connect both inputs to the relevant power sources.

Optimizing TX Path
To optimize the TX path:
1. Power on the Capricorn PLUS modem.
2. Access the modem webpage. The modem installation page is displayed.
3. Click the configuration icon at the top right corner ( ) to open the configuration menu, and then select BUC
Calibration. The Modulated Test Signal window is displayed.
4. Fill in the Technician password and click OK. The Modulated Test Signal parameters are displayed.
5. Set the parameters in the Modulated Test Signal window as follows:
Parameter Value
Frequency (one of the following, whichever
is most applicable to the BUC and the
expected frequency range of operation)
1,450,000kHz (for BUCs operating up to 1450MHz)
1,500,000kHz (for BUCs operating up to 1700MHz)
2,000,000kHz to 2,400,000kHz, the highest applicable
Attenuation 30dB
Symbol Rate 256Ksps
Duration 60 second
6. Click Activate.
The specified frequencies represent the worst case scenario (requiring the modem to use lower
attenuator values for driving the BUC to maximum output power).
7. Measure the BUC output power, and then, from the webpage, click Deactivate to cease transmission of the test
signal.
Ideally, the BUC should be powered at least 5-10 minutes prior to taking the first measurement. If
the BUC is powered by the modem, it is recommended to activate the signal for 600 seconds (instead
of 60) and perform the first measurement towards the end of that period.
If the BUC ratings are known (expected Saturation Output Power), and if the measured BUC output
power is 3dB or lower than the BUC ratings, you can expedite this procedure by performing the
following:
Calculate the difference between the BUC ratings less 3dB and the measured output power (e.g. for
BUC ratings of 40dBm and measured output power of 30dBm, the calculated difference is (40 -
3) - 30 = 7dB)
Reactivate the test signal (same frequency and symbol rate) with an attenuation value that is 30dB
less the calculated difference (e.g., 30 - 7 = 23dB)
Repeat steps 5-6 before moving forward to the next steps.
8. Reactivate the test signal (same frequency and symbol rate) with an attenuation value that is 1dB lower than in the
previous step. Measure the BUC output power and then deactivate the test signal.

9. Repeat steps 7 until the output power is less than 0.3dB and higher than the output power in the previous
measurement (i.e., the last test signal transmitted drove the BUC to near saturation). Record the attenuation value
used for transmitting the last test signal.
10. If the attenuation value used for transmitting the last test signal is 11dB or lower, click Close.
11. If the attenuation value used for transmitting the last test signal is higher than 11dB, install the 10dB attenuator
(P/N RF300927 - ATT, L-BAND,10dB, N-TYPE F, 50V, 3A,10MHZ passing) provided with the Capricorn
PLUS modem at the TX Out port of the modem and connect the RF cable (P/N CB052230 - Cable RF Type / RF
Type RG6 LF20cm) to the other port of the attenuator.
If the attenuator has an F-Type male connector, connect the attenuator directly to the modem. If the
attenuator has two F-Type female connectors, use the short cable provided with the modem to
connect the attenuator to the modem.
CAUTION
IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO POWER OFF THE MODEM WHEN THE RF CABLE IS DISCONNECTED,UNTIL
THE INSTALLATION OF THE ATTENUATOR AND THE RECONNECTION OF THE RF CABLE ARE COMPLETED.
CAUTION
IF THE MEASUREMENT IS PERFORMED WHEN THE BUC AMBIENT TEMPERATURE IS LOWER THAN 10°C,
INSTALL THE ATTENUATOR ONLY IF THE ATTENUATOR VALUE USED FOR TRANSMITTING THE LAST TEST
SIGNAL IS HIGHER THAN 12DB(INSTEAD OF 11DB). T
HIS IS COMPENSATE FOR THE TYPICAL HIGHER BUC
GAIN AT LOWER TEMPERATURES.
