Griffin Technology TRAILER GT-5X8 User manual

OWNERS MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing a Grin Trailer! Our hope is you experience many years of productivity
with your trailer and this owner’s manual is a guide to understanding the operation and care
of it. Because the trailer has specically designed uses and safety precautions, this manual
is intended to exclusively cover those topics. The tow vehicle, tongue hitch, and various other
components included as part of the trailer will have separate manuals providing their operational
and safety use instructions. It is recommended that you fully review this and all other manuals
prior to operating the trailer.
WHAT IS & ISN’T COVERED IN THIS MANUAL
This manual will cover many of the most common areas regarding the trailer you purchased.
However, it does not include all the variations possible for each trailer we produce. As such,
you may need to do further research beyond this manual to fully understand specic use of
your trailer. Further, operation of a towable trailer has common safety protocols, regardless of
the manufacturer, in accordance to the law. In general, driving a tow vehicle with a trailer may
introduce different conditions than driving without a trailer attached. We recommend you fully
understand the variables introduced like braking distance increase, vehicle sway while traveling,
turning radiuses, etc. that will affect your and others safety as well as potentially damage the
trailer if driving with less condence due to the trailer being attached. Accordingly, this manual
will not demonstrate or stipulate all possible use cases or safety protocols. Please consult
NHTSA and DMV guidelines for legal and safety requirements for towing trailers.
The following sections cover various features and components of each of our trailers. If you do
not nd the information you are seeking in this manual, please reach out to us online at www.
GrinTrailer.com or by calling 574.295.3166 and we will provide you assistance. Please have
your serial number and dealer where you purchased the trailer available as information in order
to get assistance.
NOTICE:
DUE TO COVID 19 AND SUPPLY CHAIN DIFFICULTIES REQUIRING US TO SOURCE ALTERNATIVE
SUPPLIERS AND PARTS AT TIMES, SOME MODELS MAY FEATURE OR INCLUDE EQUAL OR BETTER
QUALITY ELEMENTS THAT MAY NOT BE FULLY COVERED IN THIS DOCUMENT.

COMPONENTS
HOSES
The hoses are rubber, which are slightly exible and will withstand 3500 pounds of pressure with
the ttings supplied. Attempting to adjust or replace a hose during operation of the hydraulic
mechanism may result in damage to other components.
PUMP
The pump is the pressure unit for your new trailer and is set with the correct pressure
during manufacture before delivery to an authorized dealer. The pump comes with a 2-year
manufacturer’s warranty provided by the OEM. Maintenance includes monitoring uid levels
among other aspects. (See FLUID section)
SAFETY ROD
Like the raised hood of a vehicle, the trailer contains a safety rod that is to be positioned in place
if the bed is raised in the up position. This will help prevent serious injury to the operator or
damage to the trailer should the hydraulic pressure unexpectedly decrease. It is a precautionary
item but not guaranteed as total protection against potential bed collapse should an unlikely
emergency occur.
BATTERY
The standard battery is a deep cycle marine battery which is suitable for operating the standard
power needed to operate the lift. While the tow vehicle provides a minor charge to the battery,
it is recommended to use a trickle charger when not using the trailer to keep the battery in full
charge mode. The battery is the trailer’s primary source of power to operate the hydraulic lift and
if not properly charged could result in the bed stopping in a raised position should the battery be
drained of a charge. In such situations, you can use an alternate charging solution like jumper
cables, trickle charger, or replace the battery in order to resume operation of the hydraulic lift.
WARNING
Altering any of the original components without
consent and guidance from Grin Trailers may
cause harm and will void your warranty.
WARNING
Do not break the seal on the pressure set valve
or make changes. The hydraulic uid is under
2500lbs. of pressure and can cause bodily
injury.
3

AXLES
The axles of the trailer are rated for a maximum weight allowance and will require maintenance
to ensure proper and safe operation. Ensuring adequate grease is present as well as monitoring
and changing brake pads may be required. Refer to the OEM axle supplier book on how to perform
these checks, or directly contact them for maintenance concerns.
TIRES
The trailer comes standard with 15” or 16” radial tires from the factory. Like any vehicle tire, they
will wear out over time and may be replaced with an identical size and minimum rating as shown
on the side of the tire itself. In case a tire needs changed, use a chock with the other wheel(s)
before lifting with any type of jack. After changing the tire, be sure to torque the wheel lugs back
to factory specication as advised by the axle manufacturer to ensure it will not come off during
trailer use.
FLUID
The supplied pump uses Dexron Mercon 3.
RAMPS
(N/A on GT-5X8 or GT-610 D/O)
The ramps provided (left and right side) are rated to allow a maximum of 5000lbs. per set
during use regardless of the trailer GVWR. The intended use of the ramps and specic design
of the trailer is to handle the weight at the rear gate section only. The trailer maximum capacity
overall should not be exceeded as a result of using the ramps. The attachment of the ramps are
specically designed for the rear of the trailer and should not be used in any other way. There is
a safety cotter-pin to secure the ramps during transit. The ramps are made of heavy steel and
therefore are potentially signicant in weight for some. Be sure to use safety when handling the
ramps to avoid personal injury.
RAMS
While the rams are sealed, it is recommended to periodically clean them to remove dirt and
grime including wiping the seals at the top of the hydraulic cylinders. This can be achieved while
the bed is in a raised position. (See safety rod section for proper bed maintenance)
GREASE
The trailer has different points needing to be greased periodically to prevent binding. A synthetic
multi-purpose or Lithium grease is recommended.
• Top and bottom of rams 4 each
• Gate pivot points 4 each
4

• Spread gate 2 each
• Pivot plates for the bed to raise 2 each
COUPLER
Whether the tongue coupler or a gooseneck, the trailer is equipped with industry standard
connectors for the hitch of the tow vehicle. Refer to the vehicle manufacturer owner manual and
hitch (coupler) manual for proper connecting instructions and safety protocols. The tongue jack
should be used to raise and lower the hitch only. It is not intended to bear the weight of the tow
vehicle for performing any other operation than what is intended.
BODY
The overall body of the trailer is covered in a powder coated black paint (standard color) and
provides a barrier of protection against elements. However, the areas where welding beads are
present and the inside of structural tube steel may be vulnerable to rust. Periodic maintenance
applying an aftermarket water displacer coating can minimize negative effects of moisture on
the steel.
LOAD LIMITS
The trailer has a label on the front which details the weight load restrictions for the particular
model. These are the legally allowed ratings to be followed while using the trailer. The tow vehicle
used to haul the trailer should be rated to handle the GVWR and possible payload in order to
safely use this trailer. Refer to your vehicle manufacturing manual to understand the maximum
recommended tow weight, tongue weight, and size of trailer allowed.

GUSSETS & STAKE HOLDERS
5

Some models come standard with 2” X 12” gussets which may be used to increase the sidewall
height with a corresponding wood plank slid into them. There are also prelocated stake holders
for a 2” X 4” wood stake to be inserted for various height extension needs.
WIRING
The trailer is equipped with a seven-way factory harness set for the allowed amperage load.
Troubleshooting wiring issues is recommended to be done with the assistance of a local Grin
Trailers dealer or with guidance from our customer service department.
HYDRAULIC LIFT OPERATION
Before operating the hydraulic lift, it is recommended to be fully condent of how different
materials may move or shift inside the dump area of the trailer. Gravity will allow the materials
to slide but having too heavy of a front area may prevent the lift from rising at all. The button
operation of raising and lowering the dump bed is found in a hand-held device inside the key-
locked component console/cabinet at the front of the trailer. To safely operate the up and down
motion of the lift, do not hold the button longer than necessary once the upper and lower limit
has been reached. Some hydraulic lift dump trailers use a gravity forced lowering method, but
this trailer uses power in both directions (up & down).
THE COMBINATION BARN DOOR / SPREADER GATE
(standard on some models)
The dual-design barn door / spreader gate is engineered to spread materials using a slightly
raised bed but not to bear the weight of the load. Wet or compact materials may suddenly shift
and damage the gate. The chains on either side allow for desirable opening sizes for releasing
materials. Raise the bed in 5-degree increments to observe how the materials will shift versus
an arbitrary angle which could unexpectedly shift the materials and cause damage to the gate.
Use the retention pins in the same position on each side to avoid damage to the gate. Replace
the chains in the storage position before traveling to avoid potential damage to other vehicles as
a result of loose materials dropping from the gate area.
SAFETY
Always chain doors to current position of use
Pinch Points – be aware of where hands, ngers, and
feet are at all times

OVERALL TRAILER USE RECOMMENDATIONS
• Because the trailer is new, it is recommended that all wheel lugs, trailer brakes,
and general transit functions and components be reviewed not later than the
rst 200 miles of use.
• Only transport the trailer with the bed in the lowered position.
• During winter climates, check wires for clinging ice or snow which may erode or
damage casing.
• Use a breakaway cable on the tow vehicle in case of emergency-braking for the
trailer.
• Never cross battery cables to avoid explosions.
• Secure equipment to D-rings (available on some models)
• Properly secure the ball latch and pin in place prior to moving.
• Chock the wheels of the trailer before disconnecting from the tow vehicle to avoid
injury or property damage. Also use the chocks while loading and unloading the
trailer to ensure safety while preventing movement on the recommended level
surface (ground).
• Spread hauled materials evenly throughout the bed to avoid damaging the lift
system or cause uneven weight distribution on the axles which may result in
unexpected driving performance while towing the trailer.
• Regularly clean the trailer to remove potential debris and materials which could
cause damage to the nish or erode steel or components.
• Ensure the trailer LED lighting is functional prior to traveling.
• The billet formed fenders on most models are not intended to be load bearing.
They may bend if used as a step.
• The 7-point pigtail receptacle is located near the tongue area.
• Periodically check tire pressure to ensure all are within the stated psi to avoid
travel handling issues.
• Use rear stabilizer jacks (option on some models) when loading and unloading
