During the installation of this product, it is recommended to position the motorbike in such a way
that is cannot cause any injury or damage by falling down or moving forward or backward; it is
recommended to use the rear stand or, if necessary, the wheel lock. Make sure that the injection
system is always turned off and that the electrical equipment is not being powered during the
installation of this product (and, as well as, during all assembly phases indicated in this manual).
When adding or removing electrical cables or wiring to/from the motorcycle’s equipment, always
be sure to remove the negative battery terminal before the positive battery terminal. During
reassembly phases, connect the negative terminal last in order to avoid short circuiting the
electrical equipment.
3.0 Installation recommandation
DO NOT RUSH! When installing the GRIPone control unit, make sure that the unit is protected
from excessive vibrations and surrounding elements and that it is clamped firmly. When you use
the adhesive parts (for setting up the control unit or cables), make sure that the mounting surfaces
are clean and free of dust or grease by cleaning them with degreasing solution. When positioning
the wiring, make sure that the wires cannot be pinched or crushed which may cause subsequent
malfunctions, clamp them as necessary. For safe and professional assembly, it is recommended
that you solder the connections when possible and use thermo-tightening bands to isolate the
various conductors. Place the hot part of the welder on the ends of the wires before putting them
in contact with each other. Do not hesitate to contact the vendor/supplier for assistance if you
encounter any difficulties with the installation of this device. WARNING! The GRIPone control
www.gripone.com
unit must be placed where the operating temperature does not exceed 65°C and should be
installed where it will be protected from vibrations and surrounding elements. Locate a flat
surface on which to secure the control unit. Do not secure the unit until the installation of all
other components has been completed and the wiring has been secured.
ATTENTION !
The ECU must placed far from high temperature zone (not more than 65°). The ECU must not be
exposed to vibrations. Locate a flat surface on which to secure the unit. Do not secure the unit
until it is finished installing all other components and wiring.
The use of a traction control system does not prevent the fall caused by improper
use of the throttle of vehicle. For this reason it is advisable to test the functioning
of the system GRIPONE P3 through repeated trials and through small steps. Only
after you had the right confidence and you understood clearly where and how the
device operates on the engine and chassis, try changing the settings.
4.0. Introduction to GRIPONE P3
GRIPONE P3 represents a big innovation in the field of traction control systems for motorcycles.
GRIPONE P3 is the first and only system "stand-alone" that include a central processing unit and
an IMU (Inertial Motion Unit). The IMU, thanks to three accelerometers is able to understand the
tilt of the motorcycle, if this is accelerating or braking, the radius of curvature that the vehicle is
making and more. The control unit processes all information and defines a level of "safe" slip
beyond which intervenes limiting the power.
GRIPONE P3 is a programmable control system. The kit is supplied with a management software
necessary to program the ECU. Each map sent to the control unit contains all the information
necessary for the operation. For information about using the programming software and maps,
refer to the manual GRIPONE P3 Software.
5.0 Electric connection
The electrical installation of the system GRIPONE P3 is done by connecting the GRIPONE ECU to
the main harness of the bike, by connecting the two speed sensors and by connecting the IMU.
5.1 Connection by the plug & play harness
The GRIPONE P3 can be connected to one or two coils or one or two injectors (for the correct
connection refer to the website www.gripone.com where you can also download the base map
specifically for each motorcycle model). For each model of bike a specified connection must be
executed.
The connection is made using original connectors so it is not required any changes to the original
wiring. The installation is possible on all vehicles with transistorized inductive discharge ignition
or on bikes with electronic fuel injection. The GRIPONE P3 can not be installed on ignitions CDI.
By connecting the GRIPONE P3 to the coils of a vehicle with CDI ignition, you'll cause the
breakage.
www.gripone.com
The plug & play cable has connectors compatible with those present on the original motorcycle.
To install simply unplug the original connectors and interpose the connectors of GRIPONE
harness.
The shape of the connectors may vary
according to the bike. The connector A is
of the female type. The connector is of
type B male.
The shape of the connectors may vary according to the bike
Connection to the ignition coils.
1. Take off the fuel tank and the aribox;
2. Disconnect the coil connector of the outer cylinder left (or front if the engine is V-twin);
3. Connect the connector of harness plug&play (output M1) to the coil just disconnected.
4. Plug the connector of harness plug&play (output M1) to the original connector just
disconnected from the coil;
5. Connect the black wire of plug&play harness to the negative pole of battery or (to the frame);
6. In the case where the installation requires the connection to two cylinders (or two coils), repeat
from step 3 by connecting the output M2 (instead of the output M1) to the coil of the cylinder
immediately to the left;
7. Connect the red wire from the plug & play cable to pin +12 volt (“under the key”);
8. Reassemble the airbox and the tank;
9. Secure the ECU in a location not too hot and immune to vibration;
Connection to the injectors.
1. Take off the fuel tank and the aribox;
2. Disconnect the connector of bottom injector left of the outer cylinder (or front cylinder if the
engine is a twin);
3. Plug the A connector of harness plug&play (output M1) to the injector just disconnected;
4. Plug the B connector of harness plug&play (output M1) to the original connector just
disconnected from the injector.
5. In the case in which there is a second injector on the same cylinder (injector higher), repeat
from step 3 by connecting the output M2 to the upper injector;
6. Connect the black wire of plug&play harness to the negative pole of battery or (to the frame);
7. Connect the red wire from the plug & play cable to pin +12 volt (“under the key”);
8. Reassemble the airbox and the tank;
9. Secure the ECU in a location not too hot and immune to vibration.
5.3 Connecting the unit to the TPS (Throttle position sensor)
With GRIPONE P3 is possible to detect the position of the throttle via the TPS (throttle position
sensor) and to change in real time the sensitive of traction control system. As an option you can
buy a cable and connect it to the output marked "IM". This cable is not supplied with connector
plug&play so it require the connection by modifying the original wiring of bike. We recommend
www.gripone.com
the installation of the wire to the TPS for experienced users only, on motorcycles that are not
equipped with dedicated analog output (such as that used by the data acquisition system).
The TPS wire has two poles:
Red = signal of TPS
Blue = ground
The TPS signal is used by the control unit via a number of parameters that are described in the
software manual GRIPONE WINSOFT.
6.0 Main switch
Inside the kit there are a mounting bracket and a toggle switch through which you can disable or
enable the control system. The toggle switch must be fixed on the bracket in a specific way (see
figure below). There is a small hole on the bracket for the tab of washer. The tab must fixed into
the small hole from the back side.
7.0 Installation of sensors
To calculate the speed of the motorcycle, GRIPONE P3 uses two proximity sensors. The sensors
must be arranged so that they detect the passage of the screws of the brake disc front and rear.
In the kit is provided a system of universal brackets for mounting sensors. The front bracket must
be placed using the screws of the fork leg that tighten the axle nut. The rear brackets must be
fixed under the rear axle nut.
www.gripone.com
Once set the sensors to check that between the screw head and the sensor there is a distance
equal to (approximately) 2mm. If the distance is too big, the sensor can not detect the screw. If
the distance is too small, you risk damaging the sensor.
Important
When connecting the sensors to the control unit, it is important not to confuse the sensor front
and rear. Connect the front sensor to the mark "FS". Connect the rear sensor to the mark "RS".
If the fixing screws of the brake disc are hollow head (as allen screws), replace them with flat head
screws. If you can not replace the screws, place the sensor to detect only the outer edge of the
screw.
Each screw detected by the sensor must be equidistant from the other. The screws may be of iron
or steel. If these conditions are not met the sensors may not work properly.
After completing the installation of the sensors, turn on the controller and turn the wheels. As the
wheel turns in the sensors verify that the led to the passage of each screw.
8.0Accessories
–
IMU
The IMU is an optional accessory to GRIPONE P3 and should be
connected close to the mark IM. The positioning of the IMU on the
bike is very important. If it is not done in the correct manner, the
control unit may not work. The IMU must be positioned (possibly) in
the front of the bike and the most possible to the center (not to the
right or left). On the IMU you can see two arrows pointing to the Z
axis and the axis Y. The Y arrow must point in the direction of motion
of the bike (as horizontal as possible). The Z arrow should be pointing
the ground (as upright as possible).
