1.6 Important Compatibilit Notes
The GROM-HDR1 will work with compatible e isting GROM interface units USB2p (batch #844 and up),
USB3, MST3p, MST4, IPD4, BT3, IPD3. It will NOT work with other GROM units that are not listed. The
GROM-HDR1 will occupy the EXT2/AUX port of the GROM unit. If you currently have a AUX or iPod
cable connected you will need to disconnect that accessory in order to connect the GROM-HDR1.
Chapter 2 – General Installation
2.1 Installation location:
To install the GROM-HDR1 you will need access to the compatible GROM unit to install the MiniDin
integration cable. The HDR1 module should be in an easy to access location. The antenna should be
mounted on the dash or on the front windshield but should not obstruct the drivers view in anyway.
2.2 Tools needed:
In many cases, there are no special tools required in order to remove the stereo out. For some stereos,
it is better to use car stereo removal tools. Please consult your local car audio shop or your vehicle’s
dealership for instructions or assistance if necessary.
If you are unsure how to install the interface properly, we recommend contacting your local car stereo
shop for the assistance.
2.3 Preparation and adapter installation
1. Turn off car engine and remove key from ignition
3

2. Connect supplied MiniDin cable to EXT2/AUX port of GROM module, then connect other end to
HDR1 module
3. Run antenna to desired location then connect antenna and 2pin power connector to the HDR1
module
4. Once the interface is connected to the radio, you will need to test the operation of the interface
before re-assembling the dash.
5. Turn your car stereo on and switch it over to the CD Changer or SAT mode using the Disk /
Mode / CD / XM (depending on the stereo type). On USB based units you will need to switch to
the “radio” mode of the GROM unit. Please see mode changing in your GROM units o eration
manual.
6. Cycle through the HD radio stations and ensure that the adapter is working properly, if the
vehicle is in a garage or other location that may interfere with reception you may want to move
the vehicle to a better location.
7. Once the operation of the interface is confirmed, you may continue with the installation. If you
e perience difficulties with the installation, please see our troubleshooting section.
8. Find a place where you can place the GROM-HDR1 adapter. In many cars, there is enough
room in the dash to place GROM.
Note: Make sure you mount the GROM-HDR1 adapter in the place with enough room so that,
when you re-mount the car stereo, you do not break the adapter.
Re-mount your car stereo, making sure its clips or screws are secure.
2.5 Antenna mounting
The antenna can either be mounted on the dash or on the inner side of the windshield of the
vehicle but should NOT obstruct the drivers view in any way. The antenna will come with velcro
mounting option for easy installation, make sure to clean the surface before mounting the
antenna. After you have found your location, carefully route the antenna cabling to the GROM-
HDR1 adapter. Connect the antenna and the 2 pin power connector securely into the GROM-
HDR1 unit.
Some examples of installation location options:
