aregenerallyreferredtoasnarrowbandor12.5kHzradios.Byusing12.5kHzchannel
spacinginsteadof25kHz,the40channelsoriginallyallocatedcannowbeexpanded
to80channelstherebydoublingthechannelcapacityandrelievingcongestioninthe
UHFCB/PRSband.

haveprohibitedthetransmissionofspeechonthesechannels.ConsequentlytheTX680
hasatransmit-inhibitappliedtochannels22and23.
Intheeventthatadditionaltelemetry/telecommandchannelsareapprovedbytheACMA,
thesechannelsshallbeaddedtothosecurrentlylistedwherevoicetransmissionis
inhibited.Currentlytransmissionsonchannels61,62and63arealsoinhibitedandthese
channelsarereservedforfutureallocation.

distorted–simplyadjustyourradio

Whenanolderwidebandradioreceivesa
signalfromanewnarrowbandradio,the
speechmaysoundquiet-simplyadjust
yourradiovolumeforbestperformance.
Dependingonhowcloseyourreceiving
radioistoanothertransmittingradio,
therecanbeinterferencefromthe
transmittingradioifitisusingachannel
adjacenttothechannelyouarelistening
to.Simplytrygoingupordownafew
channelsfromthecurrentlyselected
channel.
Theabovesituationsarenotafaultof
theradiobutasymptomofoperating
widebandandnarrowbandradiosin
thesamebandwidth.Thispossible
interferencewilldecreaseovertimeasthe
populationofwidebandradiosagesand
decreases.

WhereaChannel5repeaterisavailable,

Channel35shouldalsonotbeused
foranythingotherthanemergency
transmissions.
Original40channelwidebandRadioswillcontinuetooperateontheoriginal40
channels,howevertheywillnotbeabletoconverseonthenewerchannels41–80.The
newernarrowbandradioswillbeabletoconversewithallolder40channelwideband
radiosonallchannels1to40aswellasthenewerchannelsallocatedfrom41to80.
Themixingofnarrowbandandwidebandradiosinthesamespectrumcancause
somepossibleoperatingissuesofinterferenceandvaryinglevelsofreceivedvolume.

POWERING THE RADIO
YourTX680ispoweredbya7.4Volt
1000mAhLi-Ionbatterypack.Whenthe
batterypackisnew,itshouldbefully
chargedbeforebeingusedforthefirst
time.Ifleftunused,yourTX680’sbattery
packwilldischargeitselfwithinafew
months.IfyouhavenotusedyourTX680
forsometime,youwillneedtorecharge
thebatterypackbeforeuse.

Fitting the Battery Pack
Tofitthebatterypack:
1. Locatethebottomofthebatterypack
intothetwoslotsinthebaseofthe
radioframe.
2. Pressthetopofthebatterypackinto
placeagainsttheradiountilit‘clicks’.
To Remove the Battery Pack
1. Slidethebatteryretainingclip
downwardwhilepullingthetopofthe
batteryawayfromtheradio.
2. Liftthebatterypackupwardtoclear
theslotsatthebottomoftheradio.
Charging the Battery Pack
YourTX680issuppliedwithanAC
adaptorandaSemi-quickcharger.The
chargerwillchargeafullydischarged
1000mAhbatterypacktofullcapacityin
around3-4hours.

RedLEDwilllighttoindicatethe

Battery Low Alert
Whenthebatteryiconblinksonthe
display,thebatterylevelislowandthe
batterypackshouldberecharged.Ifthe
batteryisnotcharged,anaudiotone

batteryisalmostdischarged.

Conserving Battery Power

yourequiremaximumbatterylife(e.g.a
remotesitewherethereisnoconvenient

Standby Mode
TheTX680willautomaticallyenterthe
‘Standby’modewhenitisinactive(i.e.
nottransmittingorreceivingsignals.
WhileinStandbymodeitwillstillcheck
forincomingsignalsbutitwilldraw
considerablylesspowerfromthebattery
pack.Assoonasasignalisheardorthe
keysarepressedtheTX680will‘wakeup’
again.ThisStandbymodeisautomatic
andbyitselfcanextendthebatterylifeby
manyhours.
Using CTCSS
Ifyouareexpectingtoreceivesignalson
abusychannel,youcanprogramthat
channelforCTCSSoperationandgetthe
otherpersontocallyouusingthesame
CTCSStone.Yourradiowillthenremainin
Standbyandignoreallothersignalsuntil
yourselectedCTCSStoneisreceived.
Scanning
TheTX680drawsmorepowerfromthe
batterypackwhenscanningthanwhen
monitoringasinglechannel.Thisis
becauseitmust‘wakeup’moreoftento
monitoreachchannelforactivity.You
cansqueezethatextrabitoflifefromthe
batterypackbyavoidinganyunnecessary
scanning.Inaddition,scanningincreases
thechanceoffindingasignalthereby
keepingthereceiver‘awake’andthe
squelchopenmoreoften.
Low Transmit Power Settings
Thetransmitterhasbothhighandlow
powersettings.Ifyouareonlyoperating
overshortdistances,areinareasonably
highlocationorareclosetoalocal
repeater,tryusingtheLowtransmitter
powersetting.Thisreducesthetransmitter
powerfrom3wattsto1watteffectively
doublingthetalktimeavailable.

GENERAL OPERATION
POWER ON/OFF
RotatetheVolumecontrolclockwisepast

ADJUSTING THE VOLUME
Withtheunitpoweredon,rotatethe
Volumecontrolclockwisetoincreasethe
volumeandcounter-clockwisetodecrease
thevolume.
DISPLAY LIGHTING
TheLCDbacklightingactivates
automaticallywheneverakeyispressed
andturnsoffautomaticallyafterabout5
seconds.
RECEIVING SIGNALS
WhiletheTX680isnotreceivingsignals,
itwillremainintheStandbymodeto
conservebatterypower.Whenasignalis
received,theLEDindicatorontheupper
edgeoftheradiowilllightGreenandthe
iconwillappearonthedisplay.Adjust
the volumecontrolforacomfortable
listeninglevel.
Iftheincomingsignalisencodedwitha
CTCSS tone that matches the one set in
yourradio,theLEDindicatorwilllight
Orangeandyouwillbeabletohearthe
signalinthespeaker.
IftheLEDindicatorlightsGreenand
the iconappearsbutyoucannothear
thesignal,itislikelythatyourradiohas
CTCSSenabledandtheincomingsignalis
notusingyourselectedCTCSStone(see
ModeSettingsformoredetailsonCTCSS
settings).
Ifnofurthersignalsarereceived,theunit
willreturntostandbymode.
TRANSMITTING
Totransmit,pressandholdthePush-To-
Talk (PTT)switch.Theotherradioyou
aretalkingtomustbesettothesame
channel(andCTCSScodeifapplicable).
HoldtheTX680approximately5to8cms
fromyourfacewiththeantennavertical
andspeakintothebuilt-inmicrophone.
WhilethePTTswitchispressed,theLED
indicatorontheupperedgeoftheradio
willlightREDandthe iconwillappear
ontheLCD.
Whenyouhavefinishedspeaking,release
the PTTswitchtoreceiveincomingsignals
(itisnotpossibletotransmitandreceive
atthesametime).Ifnofurthersignalsare
received,theunitwillreverttostandby
mode.
TIP: ThePTTswitchcanalsobeusedto
totransmitaCallAlarmmelody.When
theCallAlarmmelodyisenabled(see
ModesettingsformoredetailsontheCall
Alarmsettings),pressingthePTTswitch
twicequicklywillcallanotherpartyon
thesamechannelandplaytheCallAlarm
melodyintheirradio’sspeaker.Whenthis
happens,the iconwillappearandthe
LEDindicatorwilllightREDforabout5
seconds.Thecallalarmcanonlybesent

SELECTING CHANNELS

SQL KEY
The SQLkeyisadualfunctionkeythat
controlsboththeSquelchandCTCSS
Squelch
Toopenthesquelch,brieflypressthe
SQLkey.Thiswillallowyoutocheck
thecurrentchannelforactivitybefore
transmitting,particularlyifyouhave
CTCSSenabled.Whenthesquelchis
open,theLEDindicatorontheupper
edgeoftheradiowilllightGreen,the
iconwillappearonthedisplayand
youwillhearstaticorhissifthechannel
isclear.Donottransmitifyouhearany
conversations.BrieflypresstheSQLkey
againtoclosethesquelch.
CTCSS
PressandholdtheSQLkeytoactivate
ordeactivateCTCSS.Whenactivated,
the‘CTC’iconwillappearonthedisplay,
alongwiththeselectedCTCSScode.
NOTE: To activateordeactivateCTCSS,
thecurrentchannelmusthaveaCTCSS

DUPLEX/MONITOR KEY
The Duplex/Monitorkeyisadual
functionkeythatcontrolsboththeDuplex
andMonitorfunctions.
DUP Key
PressthisbuttontoselectDuplexmode
onchannels1–8and41–48.Duplex
canbeenabledordisabledseparatelyon
individualchannels.
DuplexoperationallowstheTX680to
transmitonadifferentfrequencytothat
whichitreceives.Thisallowsoperation
throughrepeaterstationsinyourarea.
Repeatersautomaticallyre-transmityour
signaloveramuchwiderarea,providing
greatlyincreasedrange.TheDuplexmode
onlyworksonchannels1–8and41–
48.WithDuplexselected,yourTX680
actuallytransmits30channelshigherthan
it receives.
To Activate the Duplex Mode
Selectaduplexchannel(1–8or41
–48).BrieflypresstheDUPbuttonto
toggleduplexonoroffonthatchannel.
WhenDuplexmodeisenabledonthe
selectedchannel,‘DUP’appearsonthe

isnowstoredintheScanMemory.
3. Repeattostorefurtherchannelsinto
theScanMemory.
4. ToremoveachannelfromtheScan
Group,pressandholdtheSCANkey
again.‘M’willdisappearfromthe
display.
To Scan the Selected Channels
BrieflypresstheSCANkey.‘SCAN’willbe
displayedandtheradiowillshowrapidly
changingchannelnumbersasitscans
throughthechannels.Whilescanning,
brieflypressthe or keystoselectthe
scan direction.
Toexitthescanmode,brieflypressthe
SCANkeyagain.TheTX680willreturn
tonormaloperationand‘SCAN’will
disappearfromthedisplay.
NOTE: Mustbeatleast2channelsin
ScanMemoryotherwisetheradiowill
not scan.
Scanning Features
• Ifasignalisreceived,thescanis
paused,allowingyoutotransmitand
receiveonthatchannel.Theradiowill
automaticallyresumescanningafew
secondsafterthelastreceptionor
transmission.
• PressthePTTswitchwhiletheunitis
scanningtojumptothehomechannel
(thehomechannelisthechannelthe
Radiowasonatthetimescanningwas
activated).Youcanthentransmit
andreceiveonthatchannel.Theradio
willautomaticallyresumescanninga
fewsecondsafterthelastreception
or transmission.
• Whentheunithasstoppedonabusy
channel,pressthe or keysto
‘Skip’overthebusychanneland
continuescanning.
TIP:
Thescanmodewillreducetheoverall
batterylifebecausetheStandby(battery
saver)featureisoverridden.Youshould
avoidscanningifthebatteryisrunning
lowandyouneedtoconservepower.
KEY-LOCK FUNCTION
The Key-Lockfunctiondisablesthekeys
topreventaccidentalkeypressesfrom
changingthepreferredsettingsofthe
radio.Whenthekeysarelocked,the
Iconisdisplayedandallkeypressesare
ignoredexceptforthePTTandKey-Lock
functions.
ToactivatetheKey-Lock,pressandhold
the DUPbuttonforabout2seconds.The
iconwillappearonthedisplay.
TocanceltheKey-Lock,pressandhold
the DUPbuttonagain.The iconwill
disappearfromthedisplay.

TheContinuousToneCodedSquelch
System(CTCSS)isasquelchquieting
systemthatallowsgroupsofusers
tosharethesamechannelwithout
disturbingeachother.Ituses1of38low
frequencytonestoopenandclosethe
squelchontheradio.TheCTCSScodes
donotpreventothersfromhearingyour
transmission.Theysimplyprovideyouwith
aquieterchannelbypreventingyoufrom
hearingtransmissionsthatarenotusing
thesamecodeasyouandaretherefore
notdirectedatyou.
